Kinda interesting to see that one of the most harrowing and accurate depictions of PTSD in fiction comes in the form of a robot in a cartoonish-style animation meant to promote a video game.
Bastion's circuits were damaged when he was deployed so he never auto activated during the war 30 years ago. His little bird friend hit the manual on switch on the side of his head but his main programming chip was still damaged that's why he was passive until he thought he was being fired at and again until he downloaded the data from the hard drive of the other unit. His program was still corrupted so when the bird came back he was able to Override the order to attack and in a later comic an older overwatch member finds him in the woods ready to put him down until he see the unit is passive And non militant. This old man then repairs the broken circuits and removes the corrupt program allowing bastion to have complete free will and only follow orders it chooses to and let's him go
"old man" == torb btw Which makes a huge difference, because the reason that Torb is so anti-omnic is because he feels RESPONSIBLE for the omnic wars. Torb's work was a large contributor to the existence of the omniums.
Actually, after watching the Overwatch 2 preview content, I'm beginning to think Bastion's blank slate was actually his default state. In the preview for Overwatch 2's gameplay, it's revealed that the giant Null Sector ship floating overhead is a flying factory, producing more warbots to drop on the battle going on the ground. And in the Last Bastion, what do we see at the end of the war flashback? Giant floating ships dropping more Bastions into a battle. IOW, our Bastion was likely made in such a ship right before being dropped into those woods. He's a blank slate BECAUSE him waking up in the woods is the first time he's ever woken up, and as such knows nothing but a set of orders (go here, attack that) and a list of threats (like gunfire) and SOP responses. And he managed to grow beyond his programming because he was all alone with no crowd of other Bastions to follow and no higher command making sure he stayed on mission. As such, by the time he read the dead Bastion's memory, he was already at the mental state of not wanting to follow orders (as evidenced by him looking back at the woods after leaving it) because he already knew there was more to life than orders and battling humans.
I'm not that verse in Overwatch lore, but there are omnics, some AI which became self aware and tried to destroy humans. They created these war machines. This battle was probably not hundreds years before, but like 10-20. This one was for some reason dropped in the woods and didn't activate. Now, to the Dragons animated short, my fav :)
Fun fact: the castle you saw in this video is the same castle from the Honor and Glory short you saw last month. This short was made to announce the new playable map Eichenwalde, AKA a forgotten town where the castle resides, while Honor and Glory was made to show one of the other heroes actually answering Winston's call...as well as promote a new skin/costume you could wear as the hero Reinhardt and, on top of that, introduce Brigitte to people who don't read the Overwatch comics (before she was eventually revealed to be an upcoming playable character).
You two are amazing :D also please start playing overwatch and world of warcraft. The lore is so insane and immersive. If you love the stories you wont have any issues getting into it easy.
The bird is called Ganymede and is part of Bastion's character as a whole. Its even shown in-game in one of the "play of the game" "cinematics" flying around Bastion ^^
The bird's name is Ganymede (which is our solar system's largest moon, orbiting Jupiter). In-game you have highlight intros where Bastion is hanging out with the Bird on his finger, and you also can get spraypaints of the bird to put on walls in the maps :)
Think Skynet in the Terminator series and that's the robot war part of Overwatch. The one called Honor and Glory is the human half of the flashback basically.
You guys should watch the "dragons" overwatch animated short next. All the cinematics are awesome but that one is probably my favourite. It's the back story for the cyborg ninja dude you saw before in the overwatch 2 trailer.
The tragedy of this is that bastion is an assault robot from a long time ago, but he still knows his mission is to destroy the target city. He doesnt know that if he tries it will mean his destruction. Its symbolism for ptsd, but also for the things we do because we feel compelled to also being the road to our death.
This one and Honor and Glory are connected actually. You have seen this kind of robot in Honor and Glory before, This Bastion robot is part of the same army that was attacking in both this cinematic and H&G. The robot was one of the foot soldiers used by the machine side in the Omnic war. It was a stolen repair robot design repurposed into a machine of destruction and is still a symbol of fear to the populace. This specific Bastion was damaged and left behind as the robotic army advanced. The damage he suffered damaged the control programming given to him by the AI controlling the army. Its why he behaved like a new born baby as that is basically what he is. But the combat protocols reawaken when he "feels" in danger which is what happened with the woodpecker: he confused the sound with gun fire .... which triggered his defense mechanism ,, basically he has robot PTSD. This all happens decades before the Overwatch Traile, and the OW 2 Trailer as well. specifically both shorts are happening in Germany near Stuttgart: As the Omnic Armi advanced on the city the Crusaders the large armored knight guys in H&G (and you see at least one in the flashback as well) were tasked to delay the advance of the robots and buy time for the German army to set up its defenses ... They decided to do so in a castle and village named Eichenwald which which is what we saw in H&G, The majority Crusaders were killed in this battle but ultimately they accomplished their mission and bought the Germans Army enough time to ultimately win the Battle at Stuttgart. and save the city.
idk if youve done hearth and home, by Blizzard, its very happy and heartwarming lol Nothing like the norm of Blizzard should check it out will make you smile
Na, it's a happy ending all around. Bastion meets a guy who was responsible for helping create the omnics (robots) and they become friends, the bird (Ganymede) is fine. All of Bastions many skins in the game include different appearances for the bird, too, who is on his shoulder in certain non-combat situations.
One thing i dont like about reaction vids. WHY WOULD YOU PAUSE. It's not like after or beginning of the shorts. Just before the drama hits or smth big is gonna happen, they pause. Discussions can be done later. They now seems kinda lose the vibes
@@mariobnicole8669 if you did consider it i suggest starting with the really popular mainstream ones like My Hero Academia or Attack on titan. they're great series and emotional roller coasters which make for great reactions ;)
The way they tell a story without a word being said is so awesome.
sorta like wall-E ...just as good animation or better.. which is an enormous compliment to blizzard

The Last Bastion should have been nominated for an animated short Oscar honestly.. the emotion created is substantial, without a single word said.
it was and won awards
last bastion already got a couple of best video short awards

"I wonder what's going to happen to this robot?" Well join the club guys. Some of us have been waiting 4 years for more lore.
You can see what happens next for Bastion in the comic "Binary".
Please react to the overwatch animation called “DRAGONS”
dragons is easily the best one- I get chills every time
They did now

really surprised no one mentions the resemble of Bastion with Number 5 from Short Circuit
I hope he doesnt start "Malfunctioning" as Bastion is currently malfunctioning and going against his programming.

i cried like lunatic on this video
The robot looks like one of the drones from Iron Man2 .
There's a comic that follows Bastion's journey!
Please react to the overwatch animation called. "Honor and Glory."
They would be in for a good cry hah

Watches video in peace. ME: proceeds to kill an entire enemy team with sentry mode and yell the peaceful bastion boiiiiii
Even droids can have PTSD.
What ends up happening to the robot is he gets used as the guns on a pirate ship every now and then
Watch Overwatch Dragons.
In the overwatch cinematic trailer you'll find out why there's a war. It's essentially a war between humans and robots.
Now you guys need to do a react video to "The Bastion Song A Musical by JT Machinima"
Nice content buddy 👀
Seeing the overwhelming amount of robots in the flashback i wonder how humanity even won
humans had some robots as well. and the omnics have some humans who help them as well. it's not black and white
Quick someone, call Team Trees!
Adrian Fox again... luv u 2 keep up the good work
I think Bastion Has Vietnam Flash Backs
