The fact this cinematic portrays so much emotion without 1 word of dialogue is amazing, and Bastion has no emotion in his face but you still know what he's feeling from his body gestures.
Portrayal of PTSD using a robot who was in the war, the bird is called Ganymede for those who don’t know. It sticks by Bastion everywhere from here. The war itself is probably best left to the story to explain, just being fair around spoilers.
I don't mean to sound like a downer but the the robot doesn't have PTSD. He was a machine built for one purpose. He didn't participate in the fight. Something happened en route and he reactivated when this video started. He was there long enough that moss and grass began growing. He knew he needed to go into the city but didn't know for what reason, presumably because of corrupted software. The woodpecker triggered his defenses as Bastion still is a combat machine. When Bastion scanned that omnic's memories he "saw" the fight and his original programming kicked in. Ganymede appearing created a conflict in his programming but in the end he chose not to pursue his original target. Doesn't sound as cute or heartwarming but the story isn't that deep
Highest props to everyone and all depts who worked on these animations. The visuals, music, story-telling etc. They nailed it all very well. My favourite part is when Bastion goes red in the field, you see the looming shadow creep with it towards that city, and then the shot when it's in the centre of the frame between the forest and the city. The symbolism of having choice, override its orders and desire for revenge, or continue to attack the city and most likely be destroyed.
I love how if you look closely when bastions eyes turn red (or he goes evil boi mode) his movements are more robotic. like he's lost touch with his human side and is just following programming.
It’s amazing how they portrayed PTSD with a robot. And showed his inherent goodness fighting and struggling with his programming and ptsd. Then all the symbolism. With the bird, not only representing free will and freedom but also his good side and reminding him to live in the present. And when that bird comes back putting him literally in the middle of the screen in the middle of the forest and the city, torn between 2 options, the conflict in his mind etc. This was just after he thought he killed the bird, killed off his good part so to speak, and afraid to hurt something else in the forest. Before finally showing him walking away from the city and picking the forest, choosing freedom and goodness. The beauty when the bird tells him, “hey it’s alright” with that little twig. What an amazing way to humanize a robot…
kinda late but i've always thought the little twig represents rebuilding or new begginings, even after destroying everything you've build (like Ganymede's nest when Bastion goes PTSD mode). Ganymede basically told bastion that it's okay to start over and let go off trauma (programming)
We will react to all of them and in chronological order. Which we don’t usually do but for this one we found a video that has them all set up that way so it makes it easier
I missed this reaction, awesome that you saw the beauty of Bastion who apparently frustrated Overwatch players, ha ha. And whether a video is ten years old or came out in the last month, it's very nice to see you both reacting to them and sharing your thoughts. Seeing you both having fun casually watching classic trailers, whether they excited people or eventually disappointed them, is always fun to see. Keep up the great work!
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Bastion was frustrating for many to play against in the early days as his stationary minigun mode was devastating even at long range and there was very little you could do against it. Because of this, Bastion got hit by the nerf hammer HARD! Still strong as a defensive hero, but not quite as oppressive as before.
I honestly wish they would make more movies with this kind of character in it. Moviemakers tend to go for the if you can't see the face you can't relate to them etc, and they want an actors performance facially on show but i find sometimes less is more. I can project what i think the character is going through and i like that. Although too much trying to compensate with noises and head movements is also a bad thing, it can be overdone.
Truly this was an impressive short. Reminds us so much of Wall-E and how the first 30 minutes of that movie was just a robot falling in love without any human characters 😊☺️
gets me every time. Possible the best cinematic blizard have ever produced. And thats saying something, whatever else is wrong with the company, the quality of the cinematics is top notch.
Fact: At the end of the movie shown the part "In memory of Yvain Gnabro" who is the Blizzard's animator who died that year when it's released. ( 2016 )
Thanks for starting this series! They are all amazing cinematics and I'm sure you both will absolutely love them. Hoping for more soon! Overwatch is indeed a video game and just to let you know that the cinematics aren't exactly related to each other as they are all just short independent mini stories showcasing the different characters in the game. With that said, you can just use the playlist's order to watch them all. Anyway, looking forward to more Blizzard or "Blizzard Entertainment" cinematic reactions in the future such as the World of Warcraft cinematics.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Awesome! Also I realized that you will be using the one video that was put up that has all the cinematics in chronological order - which is a great idea instead of watching them separately. However, that particular video is actually missing one cinematic which is completely unrelated to the rest of the cinematics/story, although definitely being worth the watch. It's titled "Junkertown: The Plan". So can I suggest to add that to your Overwatch watchthrough and can be the last one you watch.
PTSD is essentially a maladaptation of the capacity to recognize danger. It's well known in people, but it can occur in animals, too. So, if robots developed the capacity for adaptive learning, it would be just as possible for them to develop PTSD.
Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer FPS game. Each cinematic focuses on one or more of the Overwatch heroes (playable legendary figures who have their own unique gameplay styles). Dragons and The Last Bastion are my personal favorites :)

PTSD sucks.
