The dad is a grade A Prick (especially the night he forced leo to throw away his food) and the fact he got out of this scot free while Butterflyana took all the blame makes me so mad every time.

I feel like writers don't have any idea of what real ED is, so they read, watch some movies and replicate everything in their own movie, and is on and on. I never saw a movie where i can identify myself with. Thank you btw, i'm agree with everything you say about this cringe movie.

11:15 thank you for mentioning this. I hate how disgusting and obnoxious they make people who binge or have buli*ia look when eating or hiding food in movies. It's so dehumanizing and we're not messy like that at all.

No, back up, we can be. The problem is taking it as a stereotype, which is what happens all the time. But we can be messy.
TW MENTION OF ED-DRIVEN ACTIONS LIKE FOOD HOARDING.
      .
      .
      .
      .
      .
I knew "friends" at a forum that stored food in their rooms, like hoarded in tupper tubs and it would mold over and they couldn't throw it away because it was their "safe foods". I had tons and tons of ketchup and sugar packets and half eaten cookie packs at one point and they were squirreled away in the mess of my bedroom.

Even as an a person with an active ed when this was released and a member of the proana community, I hated this movie when it came out. It represented like no one because people without an ed don't understand how they work. The brother is legit the only character I think would be a person in real life with an ed. Its so frustrating on so many levels

And as I have/am been a member on a forum it is nothing like the implications this movie tells us how it is. Sure, you may find tips and tricks on them but no one is going to give you straight up how to be “anorexic or bulimic”, especially nowadays.

i was in an ed support forum when this came out and i remember they stickied a thread for all the rubberneckers who came by because of this movie. It said all about how what was in that movie was actually a super small subset of the community, most people visited the forums to be able to make community with people who understand, etc. Problem is, the proliferation of media like this forced a lot of support groups off the mainstream internet and into smaller or more underground sites, and actually making it easier to hide behaviors like this. It’s really disappointing because I had a lot of friends from those sites. When someone wanted to recover, we were all behind them. When someone had a relapse, we consoled and talked them down. There were methods of harm reduction available and always help if you needed it. They still exist today in some form but in all honesty I think todays internet, if anything, makes recovery even harder.

i'm SO glad to see someone criticizing this movie finally. they made it seem like anorexia, a mental disorder, turns you into a horrible person and an absolute monster within like 5 days. it genuinely made me wonder if the creators have ever interacted with a mentally ill person in their lives because of how insanely ridiculous they made hannah act. it also randomly turned very horror-like towards the end?? i was more focused on how freaking scary it was rather than the overall "anti eating disorder" message

I identify a lot with this movie. It followed my own experiences with EDNOS pretty well and its making me consider some of the behaviors I still do today. It took her a month to become fully ill and who knows how long to recover. For me it was also a month, and it’s been a decade today since I became sick.
One part of the movie that especially stood out to me was the voice in her head/imagination that chanted at her and degraded her. I know that voice very well. It’s plunged me into fits of starvation and self mutilation and has almost flung me off of bridges. It is terrifying, much like the horror effects towards the end of the movie, sometimes it’s encouraging like in the middle when she met her GW, but it always wants to destroy you. It is like possession, and the pro-Ana of old was like an old church dedicated to worshipping it. You would not have wanted to meet me in those days, I acted a lot like the main character did. Maybe not as bad.. Now I’ve got 14k plus of dental work that needs to be done- really all of my teeth need to be replaced and my heart is often under serious strain just from existing.
Just because your experience with an ED doesn’t match this doesn’t make this less valid. It’s almost like looking in a mirror for me. The point of a movie isn’t to show perfect characters and perfect people either, and with that in mind I think they did a damn good job. Life is messy, eating disorders are even messier.

I remember watching this with my parents when I was 14 and had an ED because I actually thought it portrayed my internal situation haha. Like the freakouts, I wouldn't do that, but that's what my brain would be screaming. I also felt like Hannah was portrayed as trapped in a toxic environment with a toxic family, toxic peers etc. and that's what triggered her ED, while the site just enabled it. The therapist scene went over my head lol cause I'm not American and didn't know about the whole health care situation. Looking back at the movie now... yikes

None of these movies seem to accurately showcase difficult it is for some people to be around food and furthermore be seen to be chewing. Few of them show how challenging it is to actually go into a restaurant and order a meal. The act of being seen chewing is problematic for so many people.
In "For The Love of Nancy," the main character actually had an Eating Disorder in real life and it might seem like something insignificant, but I admire her for being able to be filmed chewing.
I also think that people with Eating Disorders are often portrayed as wanting and craving attention. Some people do not want to be noticed like that.

Hey everyone! I know most people watching this probably have some sort of ED, so I'm here to share my experience. I was severely bulimic (purging 1-2 times daily) for about 2 years. I've only recently managed to kick the habit, and I've been clean for about a month! What helped me is joining a gym, and focusing on building strength rather than loosing weight. Also increasing my caloric intake to 1400-1500 instead of trying to stick to 800. It's super easy and I eat whatever I want and NEVER feel the urge to binge again. Please take care of yourselves!

"This barbaric portrayal of hiding food and letting it rot is extermily unlikely." That's what happened to me.... I'd be too embarressed/scared of the possibility of being caught throwing it away so I'd wait until my parents went to work to throw it out but a lot of the time I was too depressed to get out of bed in time and yeah you know what it would fucking rot in my room and I could smell it and it was awful. A lot of people I've talked to online have had the same thing happen to them so tbh I think you're almost completetly wrong about that.

I've wanted someone to talk about this movie for so long. It would have been a better movie if they had focused on the brother. He had been struggling longer than Hannah and at no point did he have a screaming banshee breakdown. When the mom freaks out about the computer screensaver, I would of thought it was something about free speech. It was a picture of a woman with ducktape over her mouth and the word control written on it.

I love this film and watch it many times a year. I like the way it captures the nightmarish vibe that comes with ana. It included that fact that men can have eds. It reflects the trouble with morality at comes with BPD, it was technical correct even to the point of binging in a car, which is taught in class as one of the most common places to binge. She even quotes the ana creed! As for the boyfriend, it highlights the draw and attraction some women with eds feel for men that are likely narcissistic. Only people with OCD as a comorbid are neat and tidy. The film highlights the family environment and the obsessional behaviour and the underground culture. It is important to remember that everyone is an individual. That is the first thing we were taught in Psychology and when working in a mental health support service.

21:00 i do have to disagree with what you said here. after re-watching the movie and scene, Hannah eventually says during the encounter that "i came here wanting to fight a demon, but now i see you're just as obsessed as i am". it definitely doesn't place the blame on "butterfly ana" in my opinion, though it did show hannah wanting to in the beginning. she ends this scene by saying 'get better soon', after hearing frustrating 'pro ana' rhetoric, and realizing she cannot help "butterfly ana" -- nobody can. she is likely too far gone. there isnt a single *person* to blame for what happened. the people behind these sites are suffering as well. its not some big evil scheme, its just a toxic hub for people to suffer together. tl;dr is i disagree with what you said about this scene and what the movie was attempting to do, as it clearly does not place the blame on "butterfly ana" in the end and honestly makes you feel bad for her.
I also recall Hannah's friend in the beginning scene introducing the site mentioning that it was her cousin's friend who started the site who was butterfly ana -- so she clearly did have a connection to this girl through her cousin, so i find it less "impossible" within this story for them to know where she lives. of course it is not realistic when applied to real life, but within this movie, they did at least leave a little crumb of context in the beginning to make it plausible.
Honestly, after rewatching this movie from a more objective/artistic filmmaking lense--and through acknowledging it is a lifetime movie so it will be cheesy at times-- i think there were a lot of artistic choices/attempts and it was not as bad as this review makes it out to be. Though the timeline was WAY off to properly portray the development of a severe eating disorder. Its not the best, but its definitely not the worst. Within the context of it being a lifetime movie (thats a medium in itself tbh. a medium of cheesy melodrama) it still did some artistic things, and i agree that the actors were not bad in it. If it were awful, I wouldnt have been able to sit through it a second time in my life.
i appreciated the attempt at portraying a ravenous binge, as i know that if this were on a more realistic timeline, I know of people who have eaten out of the trash. They did not understand, however, what this really looks like. I also thought the imagery with the food hidden in the closet was an interesting idea. it is not entirely unrealistic, but is unrealistic given the timeline they had for hannah's disorder. An example of such food hoarding is the scene in Girl, Interrupted with the rotting rotisserie chicken carcasses underneath the girl's bed in the ward. There was also a shot where Hannah walks up to her room, but they have it mirrored so it is like she is walking downwards as her silhouette. tl;dr some good ideas of shots and imagery, they fell short on some level, though.
I will say though, what is it with the most recent anorexia-related movies/media that includes a creepy boy "love interest" and assault scene? In to the bone there was that r*pey boy.... here we have a guy who is proud to be preying on minors... weird, odd. not every movie needs a romance/relationship plotline. if ur tryna do smth relating to a serious topic, honestly, id discourage going that route. "if i had a nickel for every time a movie about eating disorders included a creepy guy side plot, id have two nickels. its not a lot, but its weird that it happened twice."

You totally miss the point of the movie, it’s not suppose to look clean and fresh like people with ed like to address, but show the disturbing side of the disorder, is really a DISORDER!!! also, hannah disorder could be different from an article about anorexia because things are different depending on the person, no one experiencing the same problem/disorder in the same way! You make a lot of videos about eating disorders in some woman’s in K-pop but seems not knowing the diferences between them, it’s NEVER the same. Starving in Suburbia cakes on times when tumblr and the internet was truly obsessed with Victoria secrets angels and no one was assuming the plastics surgeries and the restrict diets they had, a lot of things from the movie is a “dramatic” way to show maybe how the things used to work back in those days. I hate to use this analogy, but saying that pro-ana "turns you anorexic" is as stupid as saying that child porn "turns people into pedophiles". You can't be "made anorexic" anymore than you can be "made schizophrenic" or "made to have breast cancer".

This Analogys dont make a lot of Sense. You are born as a Pedophile and with being Schizophrenic. And Breast Cancer is litarelly well Cancer. Anorexia is a Mental Disorder you gain through Life you arent born with it and it can be treated , Pedophilia isnt a Sickness and it cant be treated

I don't think that's what they are trying to say. Pro-Ana forums can heavily influence a young mind. Yes, there can be preexisting triggers that could "cause" an eating disorder, but another factor that happens in some cases is that they see the Pro Ana content that is giving tips to "better yourself" or become "beautiful" and think that will solve things. Not every case is like this, but it's also important to remember that not everyone has the same experience with eating disorders.
