The only way to get Generation Necktie to break out and be suggested more by youtube is to comment, like, and share -- that way the rest of the world can also see what truly honest filmmaking looks like :) I know the cast and crew personally, but if I didn't know them, I'd still be able to see and appreciate the deep meaning hidden in what seems on the surface to be just a comedy. It's a shame all most people get to see is the tired pablum put out by Hollywood instead of honest and real film like this one.
this is really such a bueatiful film. Im a 22 year old and it really touches how it feels to be young in a suburban culture, wanting to change the world but not doing much to change it. So many things. This is such an honest, funny, deadpan movie... Thank you so much for sharing it. If I was in charge of a film festival i would deffinetly accept it: this is the kind of movies that should be done: honest, real, that talk about our times. Thanks again
If only all the film fests I go to had features like this one. I love indie film, but tired of sitting through preachy stuff or sappy things we can predict from the get go. This is unpredictable and fresh. Grateful they uploaded for free to youtube, but this belongs in the indie festival circuit!!!
I’ve been all Of these characters in my early 20s I even set out to the west from the sticks of the south ,this is after I stood outside and was fed up with the life I was living,I packed my bags at 3am and walked to the greyhound and did not look back and bet it ALL on a 170 bus ticket and $90 in my pocket ,and no clear idea on what I wanted ,but I just went ,got great at nightclub security and made it my main profession,it made me many connections and i lived in a 200$ a week hostel ,in south central. made so many friends from all walks of life ,had many wild nights Fast forward,I’m sitting with the love of my life and two cats watching the trees ,that life is behind me and I’m thankful for the memories but we must grow up but remember not to ever “grow up” ✊🏿
I just finished the film and I gotta say...this is one of the most fantastic indie films I've seen. The story is something we can all relate to. The dreams eventually meet harsh reality. Life moves on. We get old. We regret...A LOT. This film inspires me and motivates me to just do what I'm waiting on other people for. Chicago isn't the best place for filmmaking or musicians but I just gotta get out there and do it. Godbless you all in life and death. I wish for everyone's passions to become their careers. Good luck in life everyone...
I hope you know how well done this movie is. As I was watching, I really felt like I knew the characters and all they were going through. And the fact that it was told through the lens of amateur filmmakers who are also experiencing the journey with the characters, made it feel even more raw and comforting in a sense. I wish I could say more, but I don’t know if I have the words😭 All I can say is that you NEED to submit this to a film festival ASAP!!!
I know for fact this will be remarked as a foundation of your long career in film years from now. This will be a film I watch decades from now with rose tinted memories of my early 20’s reminded that it was real life, and the hard memories just fade with time. Such a vulnerable depiction of real day to day life. What kind of camera equipment was used for this?? Even for not being super dynamic with aperture and depth of field, it’s incredibly well planned and placed camerawork. The cinematography definitely brings a lot of valuable emotion to the table, and triggers thought constantly. I’m incredibly moved by this movie! Amazing job!
Thank you for the kind words, glad you liked it! You have no idea how much it means to us to hear. We used a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K with assorted Rokinon cine lenses and a few zoom lenses. All that good camera motion is from the DP, Jake Gonzales. He's a badass cinematographer.
This turned out far better than I was anticipating, and I’d already believed it’d be good. The acting was excellent and the filming my god. Some of these shots have lingered with me for days. Emotionally moving film. My wife and I laughed and cried. I’ve been telling basically anyone who’ll listen to come give it a watch. Great job Dane. You really delivered here. And shoutout to my man Ben. I’ve watched him on stage for years and I’m incredibly proud to see him finally on the big screen.
simply great, the acting is a little rough on occasions but it does not detract at all from those emotional moments. The filmography is fantastic, kept surprising myself that i didn't pay 20 bucks to go see this in theaters. Kudos to everyone who participated in the making of this, i hope all of you have success in life!
The dream sequence was phenomenal. So surreal and accurate to dreams Felt extremely uneasy, especially with that "could YOU eat a horse?!" line Adds so many angles to the character Love this movie
This is art. I've been watching short films for a while and I can say this is one of the bestost heartfelt pieces I've ever seen. Made me cry a little bit at a few places where it hit pretty close to home. Growing up in a small Midwest town it feels all too familiar. Hope to see more from you!
Honestly psyched to see the positive reception the film has got so far. Loved it on my first watch a couple years ago. Excited to rewatch it. Keep crushing it Dane and friends whatever y’all are up to now. This is Ian MacFadyen btw (my UA-cam profile is weird. I was trying something lmao)
This found me at 4 am on a random Tuesday, i wasn’t really sure what to expect in the first 5 minutes. But this rocks. It might take a little time still for me to understand everything and all the details it packs, but this project is amazing. There’s a perfect balance between funny and melancholy that mixes so well through scenes. The characters are all really lovable especially toward the end, even outside of the main 3 and their lil’ guy Dust. But what shocked me most here is the small amount of views and the outstanding quality… the shots are so beautiful. The soundtrack is also something I find that perfectly compliments the project, none of the songs sounding out of place or as if they come in at the wrong time. I truly hope this project gets the flowers it deserves. Thank everyone who worked on this, you all did an incredible job truly
@ No problem! And there wouldn’t have been anyway that I would have sat through it all at 4 am if it wasn’t worth watching. So thank you all again for making such a great project, I seriously hope this finds success
You nailed it, the back-and-forth dance between funny and melancholy is my favorite part of this. That juxtaposition always keeps me in the game when it comes to film, books, etc. I love how Dane did that here.
I watched this incredible little film few days ago and already came back to watch again!!! Have suggested it to a few friends and they enjoyed it as well. Don't be fooled by the comedy early on , it's funny, but really gets good -- and gets visually beautifu;l -- in the second half. The dream sequence is almost like David Lynch (RIP) had a hand in it. Sorry to give a cliche, but the ending was like the "feel good movie of the year" for me! Such a hopeful outlook about the cycles of life. It's just a great example of what really talented people can do on a shoestring. Just imagine what these guys could accomplish if they had a real budget!!! As an indie film buff, gotta say, this is some of the better content I've seen in years, I wish we had more young people making meaningful and quirky films like this one.
Thank you so much for watching and recommending it to your friends! Word of mouth is the main way we're hoping to get the film out there. Really glad you enjoyed it :)
This looks really great and the fact that it's not blowing up is just beyond me. I mean you've got a modern day Napoleon dynamite in the makings, a fun take on the mockumentary style coupled with the surreal David Lynch feel sometimes. I'm an aspiring film-maker myself, and for me to just stumble on this film made with such love and care is crazy. I mean it gives me hope that someday I could pull a stunt like this.
@@danebachman Hey!! I mean that dream sequence was just fantastic, that shot of Patrick with the dreamy Van Gogh painting in the background. Even the way he holds on to the door as he opens it, like some sort of slimy Scooby Doo creature, just chef's kiss!

Honestly everything about this I truly felt touched by! In its own it’s definitely a masterpiece. The shots were great and the actual soul feel of this was impeccable. You captured something truly incredible bravo!
I rarely watch movies let alone videos this long on UA-cam. But this was literally amazing, I resonated with all the characters so deeply on different levels. I love the contrast between the characters in the beginning and in the end, this completely raw way of filming and these extremely intimate moments. I fw this shit..... I’m happy I found this.
@ yay hehe. well I’m not sure if this counts as "production" exactly but I’m really curious about what inspired this movie. for me personally, while watching this, it felt really real, like I knew all of the characters personally and a lot of the experiences and struggles portrayed are things that resonate with me a lot. It's almost freaky tbh... that kind of leads me to the next question. How do you all know each other and did you know each other before filming this? If you did, how did filming this change the dynamics between all of you? It would also be interesting to know how long it took to produce this. The sound track was also really great btw!! I really hope none of these questions are weird, I honestly am still very curious... I never heard of you or any of this beforehand so it was sort of surprising when it showed up on my UA-cam. This movie really speaks to a certain part of me that I cant quite place and I think what you did here was really unique and new :)
@@forgivemelucien I'm happy you related to it! The movie's main content is largely inspired by the actual experiences and struggles of me and a lot of people I've met. Each character is definitely an amalgamation of different elements of my own experience, especially at the time it was written. My perception was predicated on the suburban ennui of those I loved and I wanted to make a movie exploring that; I was also going through some tough domestic issues and I think this film was my way of coping (or understanding, I guess?). I was also super into guerrilla filmmaking at the time, so the mockumentary format seemed natural. Wanted to make a movie that was simultaneously about the difficulties of making a movie because that's kinda all we did back then! The whole crew knew each other before filming. We're all best friends and have known each other for a decade now. As for the cast, some of them went to school with us and others I was lucky enough to find and hire through casting calls. I think everyone had a difficult time making it due to the low budget; some of those shoots were totally grueling haha. But we all learned so much from making our first feature and I think everyone found something in the story to relate to on a personal level. It was pretty cathartic. It took four months to write, approximately a year to shoot (we had to halt production for six months due to Covid) and then SOMEHOW it's taken about three years to finalize the edit. The original cut was 2 and a half hours so there was a lot of cutting down, color grades and post sound stuff to be done. I hope this answer isn't too long haha! Thanks again for watching and for your feedback. I know the entire cast and crew is just ecstatic that people are enjoying it. :)
Very moved (and entertained) by this film. Any adult - young or old - can likely relate to the reality of the rat race and the various family and interpersonal dynamics.
This is the start of a few different careers, I think. This gives me Clerks vibes in a way, but it its like if you took that and mutated it with DNA from a bunch of other stuff (SLC Punk, Spinal Tap, Lords of Dogtown, various famous mocumentary/documentary style UA-cam videos, David Lynch, Napoleon Dynamite, the list goes on). This is great work.
This was a phenominal watch! Wonderfully composed story featuring amazing characters. I love the balancing of a raw independent mockumentary-esque style with polished coming of age feelings.
I love the message and the comfort feeling the film brings, it feels like sth my friends and I could cook up in a few weekends. Also the message that sometimes we need to leave our teenage fantasies behind and grow up was beautiful, idk that's how I interpreted it 💗
This was beautiful. The thing I love the most is how relatable it is on a deeper level. I recognized the house at the end immediately when I saw it and it brought up so many memories for me. There were so many moments in this that I wanted to be there. To laugh with your characters. To cry for your characters. So many funny moments. So many sad moments. So many deep moments. You really have a lot going on in this film. It's quite impressive. Miss you.
Hey Kasey! It really means a lot that you got something out of this film, thanks so much for watching. I know what you mean about the house at the end-- when we were filming there it was strangely emotional for me. Miss you too; hopefully we'll see each other soon.
This is the best movie I've watched so far this year. I'm fairly confident that this statement will stay true all the way until 1/1/26 unless Dane & co. Release another movie this year.
Dane, thank you so much for making this. I can't add too much insightful commentary beyond what's already been said in these comments, but as a young, independent filmmaker myself, it warms my heart more than I can ever articulate to see other creators telling awesome stories at a level that oozes DIY craftsmanship and, more importantly, a sense of true sincerity. The communal element of collaboration just radiates from every frame here and it inspires me so much to continue doing what I'm doing. Wishing you all the best in your filmmaking journey and I can't wait to see what you do next.
Thank you so much for the kind words. It's always great to know there's other indie filmmakers out there in the struggle. Thanks for watching and good luck making movies!
Great film. Funny, quirky, and even older guy like me can still relate to what these guys go through since we all went through something similar. The ending was satisfying, and the dream sequence was my favorite part. Great indie flick!
Im glad I'm not the only old...er... person here. Its funny I've heard my friends say that whole cigarette shtick a 100 times, yet it's so perfect. Keep on fighting the good fight bro.
this is the definition of gang - the documentary style makes it feel like it’s real life - many laughs lmao “I’m tripping fucking balls 🤣” - love it bro keep going on your grind I would gladly be in the next film - one love 🤞🏽🫀🎥

1:32:20 is the same thing my parents said to me when they found out i was shooting up. And i snarled and growled at them and said you're the biggest reason i like heroin. I hate myself everyday for saying those things. Times moved on. Im still a junkie but i love my mom and dad. And were getting close to the end. And i want to tell them thanks for helping me build snowmen and feeding me. Thanks for always being there and putting me first. Thanks dad for carrying me up to my bed when i was 10 after you just got home from a 15 hour day. Thanks mom for teaching me how to treat animals with love and compassion. My dad is away on business and i wish he could retire and enjoy himself but maybe he enjoys his job. Idk man.
Thanks for sharing your story. Life is hard; remembering those tiny moments from childhood makes it a little bit sweeter. Glad you got something out of this film.
Within 10 minutes of me randomly watching this, i realized that people will talk about this move for decades to come. It's a coming of age story, but it's soooo good.
None of the scenes were specifically inspired by Six Feet Under, but that's by far my favorite TV show ever, so I'm sure some of its ethos/aesthetic slipped into this film! Glad you you were reminded of it. I wish more people would talk about Six Feet Under; it's so masterful.
A friend gave me the jacket, I think it was one of her relatives' actual old army jacket (I could totally be remembering this wrong though). We bought a bunch of vaguely anarchistic patches from a local record store and ironed them on for the movie. Unfortunately H&M doesn't (yet?) carry the Patrick Murphy OG.
I hope you'll be happy to know that 30 minutes into this video I paused, read the description, set up my old Roku TV in my attic, got Mcdonalds, brought up a chair, and watched it in the dark. Changed my entire life.

Hi Aunt Ellen! Thanks for the kind words, I’m glad you enjoyed it :)))
the most perfect use of an american football song ever
agreed. twinkly emo veteran here, and i usually get annoyed how people meme out AF but it fits really well here
This is the start of a few different careers, I think.
Thank you so much. Super excited that those influences are coming through; I love SLC Punk, Clerks, David Lynch, etc. Glad you enjoyed!
This was a phenominal watch! Wonderfully composed story featuring amazing characters. I love the balancing of a raw independent mockumentary-esque style with polished coming of age feelings.
Thanks for watching! :)
This is very cool! I love the cinematography style. :) 25:03 in particular is a gorgeous, almost Wes Anderson-esque shot.
Glad you enjoyed! Love Wes Anderson!
I love the message and the comfort feeling the film brings, it feels like sth my friends and I could cook up in a few weekends. Also the message that sometimes we need to leave our teenage fantasies behind and grow up was beautiful, idk that's how I interpreted it 💗
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I wish it had only taken a few weekends haha
I love this. Keep making movies please.
Will do!
yes, keep making movies ❤
Best thing I have seen in a long time
Glad you liked it!
the color grading is so nice
better than most stuff i’ve seen, amazing story telling and great concept
This is the best movie I've watched so far this year. I'm fairly confident that this statement will stay true all the way until 1/1/26 unless Dane & co. Release another movie this year.
really enjoyed watching this, glad this popped up on my feed. keep going guys, y’all did great!
Thank you!! Glad you found it!
This is an extreme version of a ‘Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous’. I love it.
Great film. Funny, quirky, and even older guy like me can still relate to what these guys go through since we all went through something similar. The ending was satisfying, and the dream sequence was my favorite part. Great indie flick!
Hell yeah Jim
Im glad I'm not the only old...er... person here. Its funny I've heard my friends say that whole cigarette shtick a 100 times, yet it's so perfect. Keep on fighting the good fight bro.
Holy crap! I feel like 1 lucky freakin guy to have this gem of an experience pop up on my feed.
That makes me really happy :) glad you enjoyed!
judged this too hard when it first started.

“How many cheese burgers would it take to crush a car”
That scene will stick with me for the rest of my life. Life gets heavy. It's good to have something like that to lighten the load.
looks amazing, watching on a 4:3 monitor

Thank you!! Glad you liked it :)
u got me tearing up and shit
:(
Absolutely amazing. Impressive stuff through and through
Just Phenomenal...that's all I have to say
If only all the people in Hollywood had this guy, modern day cinema has to take more ideas into account the woke shit needs to stop, this guy gets it, it’s like the good movies in the early 2000s got put on pause and now only indie films r good and nothing goes to the theatre, get Dane to Hollywood!
Thank you!!
“I think I was supposed to die yesterday” just killed me off🤣
1:32:20 is the same thing my parents said to me when they found out i was shooting up.
Glad you got something out of this film.
currently stuck in opiate addiction shit sux.
Sweeet movie
thanks man and succes
love from Rotterdam nl
Masterpiece
Wow, thank you!
Within 10 minutes of me randomly watching this, i realized that people will talk about this move for decades to come. It's a coming of age story, but it's soooo good.
@@happywandera Thank you!! So glad you enjoyed it.
love watching this
This looks great
Love this, gonna show this to the homies and they’ll think this is dope. What’re you using to record and capture?
Hell yeah! We used a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K to shoot it.

Was a particular scene inspired by Six Feet Under, by any chance?
None of the scenes were specifically inspired by Six Feet Under, but that's by far my favorite TV show ever, so I'm sure some of its ethos/aesthetic slipped into this film! Glad you you were reminded of it. I wish more people would talk about Six Feet Under; it's so masterful.
Who’s photos are there at 1:05:00
Where's Patrick's green jacket from? I lack media literacy and want to consume product
@@danebachman makes it even more authentic, movie rocks
@@thecoooool Thanks!!!
American Movie but modern. Not bad…
Would’ve been more effective if the fourth wall wasn’t broken. Then again I’m a hater. Props for making an almost 2hr movie with little to no budget
Saw American Movie after having finished this; I love that film. Found the similarities pretty funny. Thanks for watching!
1:21 they stoled the AMERICAN FLAG 🤣
i was here
