Mostly wet for me. The top layers and crown of my hair tends to dry fast, and I get frizz sometimes when it’s not damp enough. I like smoothing or raking/combing the product through the hair (depending on wash day or refresh). If I have Refresh spray, then I don’t need to wet my hair as much, though.
Todays my wash day! I can’t wait to use these tips. You have definitely changed my hair game. I’ve been a subscriber for about 2 years now. You helped me style my thin hair so much better!
You have the best videos and helpful tips. I almost always learn something new to try. I will now try scrunching to remove excess water after the shower and also lightly wrap in the hair repair towel. I use the hair repair towel, but have used it pretty snugly. Thank you Gena!
Gena Marie, Your demonstrations and tips are so helpful. I know I will be going back and watching this video again. Thanks for giving such practical methods and best practices for damp styling.
I always use my hair repair towel, and damp hair as well. Not fond of hair protection but I like build one. I am a CS gal but I bought a Ouidad climate control cream and gel. I skip the leave-in when I deep conditioner. Love your hack always works for me
Great video! I like your suggestion to add gel + water to frizzy areas after microplopping, I have the same problem you describe with areas of my hair getting frizzy after microplopping and just adding gel without water hasn't always helped for me. Will definitely try this next time. I have done the type of finger coiling you describe at the end of diffusing as well as root clips and also find it helps. Thanks for the great suggestions!
Absolutely LOVE this curlsmith miracle shield and the volumizing lotion! My curls have volume and fullness but it’s not frizzy at all just volume! Love it thank you so much. Also big fan of your technique I just started using it recently and I’m getting better at it with more practice. Simply life changing for me so I can’t thank you enough! I’ve spent decades fighting my hair and doing it alllll wrong. 🙌🏼💪🏼👊🏼
I’ve got to try this! I love the gel and use it too! No alcohol in it! My hair cannot stand any alcohol of any kind! 🤦🏼♀️ I get wet frizz sometimes so I think these techniques might help!
I’m so lucky in this department, I wet my fingers, run them down each curl and it’s refreshed. Yet I still haven’t figured out wash day hair, I’m putting too much or too little product so I put more and then once I refresh it my hair looks great 🤣😂🤦🏻♀️
Thanks for the video! I like to damp style since my roots take so long to dry. I use both the volumizing lotion and ACC gel. I'm curious when you decide to use a leave-in vs. a curl cream?
Thank you for this *really* useful video Gena. I wanted to ask for some advice: I'm about to start a new job with longer hours so I think i will need to wash and style and dry (or refresh) at night. I've tried this before, following guidance from your videos but it always looks 'bent' in the morning. Maybe it's not completely dry or my silk bonnet (cheap pretend silk type) is not good. What do you think makes the most difference to getting the hair to stay nice over night? PS your routine and styling tips work really well for me tho my hair is thicker than yours (it's a similar length).
My favorite gel which is light, watery and lovely is Biolage Gelee Styler. Do you know if that's considered a good one? It's the only one I'll use but I would LOVE alternatives that are similar. It's everything.. ive been using it for years along with loreal lock it weather control humidity resistant hair spray.. I have never found one that works as well and I've tried all the high end ones out there. I always go back to this. I was curious on your opinions on these two products if you have tried them.
@Gena Marie Please do try it and let me know what you think ♡. Its a thin smooth formula different than anything. I had ever used before and I was hooked. I will definitely try the one you mentioned.
Yes because the first time you use a towel to absorb water at the roots, the you add just a little back in on the lengths of your hair so it's not stringy. My roots are still damp/towel dried.
What about frizz that pops up after diffusing? My hair looks right as i follow steps like this, but when i sotc, i get lots of hairs that fly away or separate from clumps... They look kind of dry... IDK how to resolve. My gel is strong.
I am new here and tried some of the curl smith products, but I'm having a couple of issues maybe you can advise. First I tried the curl smith souffle and it instantly made my hair stiff, like wet frozen hair! Why?! What in the world would cause that? And also I am not ready to give up the wash everyday yet, and since I've been using these products my hair is dryer than normal. (I have med-high porosity, low-med density) help!
Gina Do you know when to put on heat protectant. It might sound like an obvious question but Im trying to eradicate breakages and I can't figure out if i should put it on first muddle or last when layering stylers Jonanthabb
@@GenaMarie you put the heat protectant on after you put in your leave-in conditioner in this video, it was not the first product you applied....this gets confusing to some of us when you don't consider a leave-in conditioner as a styling product. If it's not put on the hair during the cleansing process in the shower, then it's part of styling.
My apologies, I forgot that I had used it after leave-in, which is actually what the instructions say. I do consider the leave-in a styler. My mistake. There’s 1-2 weeks between when I film videos and by the time I post them so it can be tough to remember.
Just a comment about the confusion of all curly hair utube channels. I've watched another curly "pro" and she stated washing hair in the sink upside down like you do only creates more breakage and frizz? ??!!???
I agree with that lol. I tend to avoid washing upside down at all costs because I’m prone to breakage and tangles. Others might not have an issue with it. But I have to rinse out my deep conditioner a lot of times over the tub because I don’t want to get back in the shower after it’s been sitting. The only other times I will wash upside down is when I need to record something specific so you can see better.
Do you prefer to style damp or wet?
Read the blog post for a list of steps and products: genamarie.co/2023/04/how-to-damp-style-without-wet-frizz/

I love the specifics you gave here!
Leave-in conditioners are a necessity!!! I use either Jamaican black castor oil leave-in or Nexxus Humectress.
What Castor Oil conditioner do you use? I’ve seen Shea Moisture and As I Am, is it one of those? :)
I’ve got to try this! I love the gel and use it too! No alcohol in it! My hair cannot stand any alcohol of any kind! 🤦🏼♀️ I get wet frizz sometimes so I think these techniques might help!
Sooo pretty 😊 I am still in the learning/training phase. Very helpful❤🎉
This was an awesome video, so helpful thank you!!! Also I love you're not hiding your grey hairs, it looks so lush 😍 love from the UK x
Great video with good information. Thanks, Gena. 👏
thanks Gena! I met your videos two weeks ago, and they are very useful.
Thank you! Great video! Do you use cool or heat to diffuse? Thank you. 🥰👍🙏🫂♥️

Hello, I have a question love.😅 , Should you do a hot oil treatment for the scalp/hair on low density and high porosity hair?
Thanks for the video! I like to damp style since my roots take so long to dry. I use both the volumizing lotion and ACC gel. I'm curious when you decide to use a leave-in vs. a curl cream?
I use a leave in conditioner when I want stronger hold out of my gel and don’t need as much moisture that day because creams are richer.
Love your videos ❤

Glad to see you use a heat protection.

I should try it! I haven’t used it, so I’m not sure what compares. The Ouidad is my favorite because of it’s thin, smooth formula
@Gena Marie Please do try it and let me know what you think ♡. Its a thin smooth formula different than anything. I had ever used before and I was hooked. I will definitely try the one you mentioned.
@@theresas2520 I order almost everything off of Sally Beauty ♡ I will try it
2:49 You are absolutely gor-geous
You are amazing
Thanks for all your knowledge.
What do you have mixed in the water bottle?
It’s just plain water. ❤️
@@GenaMarie thank you! My eyes didn't see it was the bottle 🤓
How are your 2nd-4th day hair?
So take water out and put back in?
Yes because the first time you use a towel to absorb water at the roots, the you add just a little back in on the lengths of your hair so it's not stringy. My roots are still damp/towel dried.

I love many of Curlsmith’s products but the soufflé did the same to my hair. Had to rewash. I think there’s glycerin higher in the list
My hair is very similar to yours. If I were to brush the leave in I would never have curls, why
Does curl cream increase dry time?
It definitely can. The more moisture and heavier your products are it will take longer to dry
Can you dampen your hair everyday? I’ve heard that it can cause damage. Please help lol
It's best to avoid it as much as possible. When refreshing is needed, use as little water as possible
Thank you so much! I was diagnosed with telogen effluvium about a month ago so im trying to be as careful as I can be with my hair.
Gina Do you know when to put on heat protectant. It might sound like an obvious question but Im trying to eradicate breakages and I can't figure out if i should put it on first muddle or last when layering stylers Jonanthabb

Always apply the heat protection first love.

My hair gets so frizzy in the shower and so much webbs I hate it, that’s why I just straighten it
Im sorry but the thumbnail images look nearly the same to me..
She got that wet rizz 😏
