Mystery Dungeon games aren't JRPGs, they're rogue-lites. Just like Etrian Odyssey is a blobber, not a JRPG. JRPGs are like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy mainline games. Blobbers are like FTL's Dungen Master, Wizardry, Etrian Odyssey, SSI's Eye of the Beholder, and so on where it's first person and party based. They go back to Wizardry which was developed by Sir Tech in the early 1980s. Oddly enough, Wizardry was a huge hit in Japan and a Japanese software company now owns the rights to Wizardry since Canada based Sir Tech went belly up.
Mystery Dungeons are basically a consolized rogue-like, but we'll call them rogue-lites because the die hard rogue-like fans have more strict definitions on the subject. A rogue-lite is a game which shares some of the defining features established by Rogue, which was developed in 1980. Randomized environments, turn based moviement, hack and slash gameplay, permadeath, and a few other things are key features of a rogue-like. Rogue-lites are anything Mystery Dungeon, Diablo, Torchlight, SSI's Dungeon Hack, Ancient Domain of Mystery, and so on.
U brought me to school, thanks for the info!
