Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called "the Doctor", an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations and helps people in need.
The show is a significant part of British popular culture,[2][3] and elsewhere it has gained a cult following. It has influenced generations of British television professionals, many of whom grew up watching the series.[4] The programme originally ran from 1963 to 1989. There was an unsuccessful attempt to revive regular production in 1996 with a backdoor pilot, in the form of a television film titled Doctor Who. The programme was relaunched in 2005, and since then has been produced in-house by BBC Wales in Cardiff. Doctor Who has also spawned numerous spin-offs, including comic books, films, novels, audio dramas, and the television series Torchwood (2006-2011), The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007-2011), K-9 (2009-2010), and Class (2016), and has been the subject of many parodies and references in popular culture.
Beginning with William Hartnell, thirteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor, and in 2017 Jodie Whittaker became the first woman to play the role. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally. Each actor's portrayal is unique, but all represent stages in the life of the same character, and together, they form a single lifetime with a single narrative. My favourite design would have to be a tie between the Earthshock suit and the Cybus design.
I like how the classic era cybermen evolved from what looked like people with socks on their head to robots in leather jackets to robots in crinkly tin foil
Than modern who went and slowly evolved from tank-like robots to Iron Man but low budget
Personally thats why I prefer the cybus looking one's. Its kind of an in between the 2.
clanky and not ultra high tech looking but also modern with a good bad guy eerie presence. Plus the raised faceplate is just iconic and easily one of the best imo. I don't really like the ones after though that looked straight up like iron man bc they are almost too robotic and not enough biological horror.
Just a little triviall for you the actor who played alfred in gotham his dad was the 3rd Doctor
Yep, Sean Pertwee portrays Alfred in Gotham, and his father was the one and only Jon Pertwee! :)
My favourite has always gotta be the Cybus ones... iconic, redesigns afterwards have fallen short (like with the Daleks - maybe not to the same globally accepted level).
Love the original/Mondasian ones for being the classic and just... terrifying.
Completely agree my favourite design too so scary to imagine them as a kid being made as their chopped up in age of steel they feel truly mechanical with no humanity left.
My faves are definitely Invasion, World Enough and Time and Ascension.
Some really interesting picks here, my favourites are definitely The Invasion Cybermen (I love every aspect: zips and all) but hearing your thoughts on the designs has definitely opened my eyes to some things I had never really thought about before so thank you!

tomb, invasion and cybus are probably my top 3. they all have a great mix of machine and man which give off a uncanny feel to them.
Here's a theory: The original teardrop and mouthdrop was used to mount the silver rings around the mouths and eyes of the Cybermen in Moonbase and Tomb. But in Wheel, they didn't have those, but they used the same head mould, leaving the mounting holes visible.
I’ve always been partial to the squarer headed ones. In general, I like the designs which keep some visual indicators of humanity, the ones that look more like technology placed on a person than just Iron Man-esque suits of armor.

It’s so cool seeing that we both have the same No. 1 choice. I’m surprised to see you choose a Classic 60s Cybermen but obviously I share the same opinion. That design is so creepy from smaller tight helmets, to the large circular eyes, the letter box mouth and just that voice! Seriously, the end of Part 3 of Tomb of the Cybermen is creepy and memorable and it’s all because of THAT voice.
I remember when I was a kid I had a VHS about the Cybermen and the cover scared the crap out of me and I hid it so I didn’t have to see that cover. Even the back images sacred as there was this one from Moonbase with the SAME DESIGN of it reaching towards one of crew which also sacred me.

For revenge of the Cybermen they intended to use the invasion costumes but most of them were ruined from years of storage. So they created new ones & redesigned them for the story.

The Cybus models look the most like what I'd imagine a murder machine to look like.
My favourite is Moonbase/tomb of the cybermen design but my second favourite design is the original Mondasian cybermen because they are really creepy and eerie and look as if they have been thrown together roughly

Sidestepping into comics to comment on the Nightmare in Silver design, there is another story from back in the DWM 8th Doctor comic run that tried to do the idea of highly advanced Cybermen from the future and I would argue did it a lot better. The Flood has a design that probably looks the furthest from human of any design but unlike the NiS design they still look creepy with a tall and spindly look to them. The Cybermen from that story also feel more human in other ways, such as the ability to understand and manipulate emotions to a much higher degree than virtually any of their predecessors, except without feeling like they experience those emotions themselves.
I love the design of the Cybermen from Ascension of the Cybermen, but I wish they used a chest unit closer to the one seen in the Cybus design rather than the somewhat Iron Man looking one from the NiS design. Still a massive improvement over the tacky plastic look of the NiS ones, but a few small changes could really make them stand out as a contender for the best New Who or even possibly best overall design for the Cybermen. (as a unique variant, the CyberMasters look absolutely amazing in my opinion, though I really hope they eventually resolve the issue of the Time Lords being converted since it definitely feels like they're shooting themselves in the foot by limiting the use of Time Lord villains... Big Finish has done some amazing stuff with Time Lord villains while New Who avoided them even when Gallifrey was back for a bit..)
I love the Nightmare in Silver ones and I don't apologise for it.
Though I don't like how they had superspeed apparently for a single scene.

My favorite cyber voice is the Tenth Planet and again in World Enough and Time.
It is chilling with the almost human sounding but the tone and inflections are off.
It makes you remember there are people underneath there.

I have to correct your usage of the "Uncanny valley" phrase. It refers to the feeling we get from seeing a robot that is too similar to a human, like Sophia the robot en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophia_(robot). It does not mean creepy in general.
I have to correct your correction, uncanny valley is the unsettling point in between scary and familiar. Where something looks familiar.. but not quite, this is what generates creepiness

10: Product of their time, but Yeah... While I was born after the Troughton Era (Tom Baker - 4th Doctor for the WIN!), I grew up on Classic Who and reruns of Troughtons Era... These Cybermen never scared me at all... Yet the overused (Even back then) Daleks always had me hiding behind the sofa!!!
9: Now the Silver Nemesis - THEY SCARED ME... But even I have to admit, they do look a bit lame nowadays... and yeah, The Bodysuit is the let down!
8: Ooooooo! Now I recognise the design but these are episodes I MISSED!!! Still, They look more metallic than Silver Nemesis...
7: Yeah.... Controversial isn't the word... LOL! They were in my view really beginning to get a good feel for the Cybermen at this point - But even with Nostalgia, There are weaknesses ... The Helmet and Chest Plates have become iconic... As did their weapons... But its the Body Suits again that let it down! Even with a low budget I think they could have made them look a bit more solid!
6: Invasion Cybermen... Again, I never saw these episodes... :( Given the time I like that design!
5: WOW! The OG Cybermen! Yeah... They did look REALLY SILLY... But they are so Iconic too that they bought them back for NU WHO! So I cannot fault you here!
4: Again, Go to agree... They actually looked METALLIC too... (Except ... Oh! Was it these ones??? Not sure now... When some Extras had to pose with them and you saw the costume bend!!! WHOOPS! Think that was another episode!)

1: Now these I did not come across until the 1990's... And Yeah, Again I agree with you... They are kind of the Bridge between the 10th Planet and The Mondasions from the NU-Who Era... It works well... Of course not seeing these episodes until the 90's means that they didn't have that fear factor for me... But I know that 1983 Me watching a rerun would have SHIT ME PANTS!!! These guys WERE SCARY BACK IN THE DAY!

My 2 favourite are 2 the earthshock cybermen and 1 the cyberwar cybermen from chibnalls era it mixes so many designs and has a earthshock cyberman feel to me so of course it will be my favourite

They could’ve added pop culture in the victory poses, could you imagine the floss or the Saiyan Pose to be a chosen Victory Pose. This could’ve spiked up a major trending in the sonic series.
The Wheel in Space Cybermen are my least favourite because of their voice. I literally can't understand what they're saying most of the time. It's like the opposite of the 70s-80s ones, which are too far the other way.

also fun fact for the voices of the "tomb of the cybermen" cybermen was created by using a real device used to allow smokers who damaged their voice boxes so terribly to speak again kinda growns it to earth in a way cause its real human technology there and not some fancy modulators used to edit Nick Brigg's voice in the new series as that false voice box was a practicle thing

I love Nightmare In Silver/Cyberiad Cybermen. Cut from the armour looking more like a huge piece of plastic, rather than proper metal, I love that design.
