This review was originally posted in April 2010, and was the last review I recorded before setting out to film Kickassia (hence the comment at the end, telling viewers not to panic). Earlier this week, a Content ID claim meant that the previous upload of this review was blocked worldwide, and my dispute was denied, thus I was forced to edit further. This is a re-edited (and upscaled to HD) version that now runs 4m 1s shorter than the original, with the following changes:
- Additional cuts to tighten up the pacing and shorten the film clips, which amounts for a further 2m 30s of cuts, as I was a bit too lenient in my 2018 edit.
- New edits to improve the audio, removing the tape/camera noise throughout, and equalised levels.
- Fixed the aspect ratio of the film clips throughout, as the previous versions were stretched due to a faulty anamorphic flag.
- Upscaled to 720p.
- Snips a few jokes I feel didn't work, as per the previous re-edit.
- Replaced the end credit music and snipped out references to my ex-affiliate.
Some of the comments on an unofficial version have wondered why I didn't mention the "Balrog gives Chun-Li's mum brain cancer"; I don't think that's ever stated by the film, and may be a conflation of Chun-Li's mum being punched and her next scene in the present of her dying that I think most people have assumed as fact, and if it was meant to be the implication it went over my head. This was the second half of a double bill of reviews covering video game adaptations from director Andrzej Bartkowiak, the first being Doom. Hopefully this version sticks around.

I love how in one scene, Chun-Li as a child was portrayed by a Asian child actress, but as an adult...looks nothing like the child one bit.

Here's a bit of knowledge about this movie you may not know: Maya is the civilian name for C. Viper, one of the characters introduced in Street Fighter IV, which was new at the time of release of this movie.
They were really counting on making a sequel to this, weren't they?
And her being Crimson Viper is...insane? She's one of the LEAST stylized characters in the franchise, and the movie STILL doesn't even get CLOSE. It's a redhead with a purple tie and sunglasses. Slotting that in to the Nolan aesthetic (as this movie is, admittedly bizarrely, trying to do) shouldn't be rocket science.
You know who would have been a "fun" choice for Balrog? Get in Mike Tyson as that's who the character is based on. In Japan the character is called M. Bison (they switched the names around outside Japan for legal reasons I think) Street Fighter II the Animated Movie is far better and far closer to the source material than any other adaptation.

This is easily the Dragon Ball Evolution of martial arts movies and video game adaptations. Neal McDonough (aka Lieutenant Hawk from Star Trek First Contact) was severely miscast as M. Bison, the action is dull and the story is bad. I mean the 1994 Van Damme movie, while not a good film, was fun and entertaining with Raul Julia having a fun performance as M. Bison. If you want to watch a good Street Fighter film watch Street Fighter 2 The Animated Movie.
I love Street Fighter II The Animated Movie, and I also quite enjoyed Street Fighter II V. Both are MILES better than this craptastic movie. Seriously, as a big Street Fighter nerd it makes me so mad as to how they screwed it up. I just like to pretend it doesn't exist.

Even in Street Fighter 2 V they gave him a canon name and significance to the plot. Dorai is a cool character in that series.
My mom used to call these kind of movies super kung fu movies. They have a lot in common with the Blaxploitation movies of the 1970s.

re: the "chun-li gets less asian" comment, a lot of people assume she's white, but kristen kreuk is half-chinese. but you were right in that literally none of the actresses who played little chun-li look like her. but this review came out forever ago so i get it.
cant blame them, they get a bunch of little asian girls to play lil chun then hire Kruek who looks whiter than rice so really she does look less asian as she gets older. the fact that people "forget" she is half chinese is that she looks 0% chinese with no distinguishing chinese features. even if this review came out yesterday the point still stands.

For those who don't follow video game news, Crapcom are very self-destructive in the realm of movies (or business decisions in general). In addition to this blunder, they fired George Romero from a mostly faithful Resident Evil adaptation in favor of Paul W.S. Anderson's wife-insert fanfictions, and then allowed him to do it AGAIN with Monster Hunter. And the Dead Rising movie.... wait, I just remembered that it exists.....
I haven't heard female narration sound this bored since Samus in Metroid Other M.

Fun fact the characters used to write Chinese 1000 years ago are actually still the characters used to write Chinese, there have been more characters added but if you dug something up in a field in China basically any literate Chinese person could at least get the gist of it
And before someone tries to tell me that there isn't a language held Chinese at a Cantonese or Mandarin I would remind them that both of those languages use the same written language
The writer for this movie would go on to do the screenplay for the Jungle Book remake, by the way, although I honestly think Jon Favreau also wrote most of it.

Funny how the director managed to make two enjoyable Jet Li movies and yet can't even make a decent Street Fighter.
I think they should have cast Dolph Lundgren as Guile instead of Van Dame in the first Street Fighter movie, Lundgren would have been a better choice to not only play as William F Guile but for any American Bad Ass in most any film you put him in.
A guy I worked with once started talking about the first Street fighter movie. He said "I loved Sylvester Stallone as M Bison!" Haha. But then... imagine that with Dolph!!!

i love when they include glbt characters and they're either comic relief gay guys/crossdressers, eye-candy-for-hetero-men lesbians, or villains that die horrible violent deaths. because yeah, there's NOT enough movies where gay people get beaten to death, and all those based on real life people/events that really happened aren't nearly satisf--- i mean, graphic, enough.
Horrible acting, accents that come and go or don't exist at all... changing ethnicities of characters... horrible dialogue that you know was intended to be profound. Don’t buy or rent

Someone like Jamie Chung or Fan Bingbing would have been a far better fit as Chun Li
It doesn’t help that not only M.Bison look nothing like he’s supposed to, but he doesn’t even get to use his Psycho Power. Yes he kinda looks like he has Super Strength but he had other supernatural abilities in the games.
Also if they did make a sequel, maybe they could’ve used Akuma, given how he’s another villain in the series who didn’t die here.
It's weird that they marketed this as a prequel to the other movie despite the fact that LITERALLY NOTHING backs that up. Unless Bison lost a bad accent for an inexplicable one! I think when they said that it was a 'prequel to Street Fighter,' they meant the game, but...that ALSO doesn't add up...
And something about someone in 2010 throwing up his hands and sighing "WHAT A WORLD WE LIVE IN!" just makes me start to laugh and laugh and laugh. And laugh and laugh. And laugh.
Say what? If they were gonna do that. They should've shown a decent amount of proof that the post time skip stuff was set during the events of the Alpha games.

So, the movie is about the Legend that is Chun-Li, except that she has Nash and Gen helping her and Gen does most of the fighting. It seems the filmmakers were afraid their mostly male audience wouldn't be comfortable watching a girl kick ass on her own, so we need her to be helped by men the whole way. Girl power!
Not to mention that they made a character named Maya fabricated for this movie who's only known for...wearing a shirt that show off her wet nipples. JEEZ.

This movie is Existentially bad. Everything sucks. Every mise en scene looks like a cheap back lot.
Arrrggh, not this guy again. I refuse to remember his name, just call him Damien Darkh from Arrow. But man, he is such a terrible actor and hams up his roles tremendously. He always plays over the top villains, but makes for a very underwhelming Bison.

The characters in STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI don't have the same costumes from the games, but at least it has consistent fight scenes (which are pretty decent), so it's still an improvement over the 1994 movie. Kristin Kreuk and Robin Shou's performances are good, but Chris Klein's is terrible. The cinematography is very good, but the ending is bland. The story is supposed to be about Chun-Li's personal journey, but it doesn't feel that way because she shares screen time with too many characters.
