This review was originally posted in March 2010, and has been re-cut for this re-posting, losing 1m 58s of footage. This is largely from some fairly long film clips, but there's also a bit where I got the virus wrong that's been erased here. This is the first episode of my second season, which followed from the cliffhanger in The Jazz Singer review, where I was "fired" from Channel Awesome (which was a joke upon the fact that I was so unpopular at the time), hence the opening sequence. I've also had to obviously replace the Limp Bizkit cover of the Mission Impossible theme with the version from the SNES game. Hope you enjoy!
I did have it at one point, and I think I had it earmarked at one stage, but I think I got rid of it because it was covered by MikeJ and later Calluna, and I don't usually like to do things covered by other reviewers unless I can put a different stamp on it. I was actually looking for it the other day in my box of review candidates, but it doesn't seem to be there any more.
I've noticed that Doug has re-reviewed many of the films you have reviewed (e.g. Ghost Rider, Pluto Nash, Christmas With The Kranks, Alien vs. Predator, The Haunted Mansion, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, etc.) I'm just hoping he'll give A Good Day to Go Fuck Yourselves the thrashing it deserves next.
I miss the times when CA was a thing. You won't get that amateur enthsiast film maker charme ever again. It's sad all that shit happened in the back, but still, I'm glad I still get to enjoy all these videos.
Too bad CA didn't suffer any consequences despite a very real cover-up because people like Linkara got involved and turned it into a sham by adding his petty nonsense and personal grievances to it, making it all look like a farce
The face masks look ridiculously fake when they pull them off... I mean you cannot believe these would work like a real human face when looking at those scenes. I half expected them to keep pulling masks off until it is revealed Ethan was Old Man Wickers and he would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those meddling kids and that darn dog!
While I agree that this is the weakest Mission Impossible movie, I still enjoyed it as a guilty pleasure. I dunno, maybe I just have a thing for John Woo movies.
I love this movie. Oh, Mathew is not wrong in anything he said about it, I just love it anyway. :) Remember how the Nostalgia Critic said of Commando, "It's ungodly stupid, but I love every minute of it"? That's my relationship to this movie. This is my personal favorite So Bad It's Good movie. It's really a shame that there's a multitude of reasons, not the least of which being Cruise's ego, that would keep this film off of MST3k. :-D
Brian Webber he did a review of it recently (about time) and yeah it was actually pretty funny. I love his cameo here in film brains review. I’ve always kinda enjoyed cameos and crossovers (when done well) in reviews though like when film Brain was in ghost rider 2 in nostalgia critics video. Although I think film brain was the only good part of that review nostalgia critic gets a little TOO into his Nicholas cage impressions
I'm gonna be honest here, I genuinely though that Film Brain was a part of the poster before realising that it was just added in as a thumbnail image... That being said having Film Brain IN Mission Impossible II would've made it a far better movie than what it was.
This movie doesn't just give homage to Notorious with the racetrack bit. There are whole scenes and major plot points copied wholesale. In fact, there are films which are ostensibly remakes of other films that have less in common with the original. It's one of the stranger aspects of this movie.
Robert Towne [who was Tom Cruise's regular script doctor at the time] pitched a Notorious remake/reworking to Brian De Palma when working on the first MI film. Despite famously being a Hitchcock fan, De Palma wasn't happy with Towne's work on MI and said no. And De Palma wasn't a fan of how it turned out as the backbone of MI2 calling it a mess.
2 questions my friend. 1. Despite the poor quality of the film, did you think Roxburgh's performance as Stamp was a good part of the film? And if so, do you think he should have been involved more? 2. Do you think the fight between Hunt and Stamp should have been longer?
I tried watching this movie during my franchise re-watch before Dead Reckoning Part One, but I got all of 70 minutes in before I got too bored to keep going. Scott is a uncharismatic bore, and the whole thing felt like a bad imitation of a Pierce Brosnan 007 film mixed with a flashy Hong Kong action film that has no action scenes for more than half the runtime. The constant mask fake outs were annoying, too. I can’t believe Dougray Scott was actually originally cast as Wolverine. He hasn’t a screen presence or a lick of talent here that Hugh Jackman has in spades.
The only Mission: Impossible movie I dislike - and I don't only dislike it; I HATE it. It shouldn't be part of the canon. Was Woo inspired by the beginning of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier for the beginning of this film? I don't know which is more overbearing - Woo's pretentious use of slow-mo or Zimmer's beat-it-into-your-skull rock soundtrack.
Don't blame the director - blame the writers. The OTT action compensates for a lackluster and uninspired and generic story. If it didn't have the overdramatic action then it'd be left with even less. I would however say that the doves feel overly shoehorned; and yeah this is definitely the worst in the franchise.
Let's be honest, there was ONE other good thing that came out of this movie: Wes Borland's guitar work on the theme song. (But just his guitar; the less said about the lead *ahem* "vocalist" of that group the better)
It was due to the delays in this film holding up Dugray Scott that we got High Jackman as Wolverine; and even in the lesser X- films Jackman was great IN them, thus we must consider this the best Mission: Impossible film!
This could not be less like the original Mission: Impossible TV show. Mission: Impossible episodes were always basically elaborate cons, where the IMF team used deception and manipulation to set someone up to take a fall. There was very little violence, and almost no gunplay or explosions. At the end, the victim was generally taken down by his own people. Granted, this was because it was a TV show with a limited budget and had to operate under the restrictions imposed by network TV, but you know what? Sometimes, that's actually a GOOD thing, as it prevents the show from turning into a bloated, self-indulgent vanity project like this.
In my opinion, the first one is still the best of the series. Yes, the plot is confusing, and it will take multiple viewings to full understand, but the plot is really secondary to the audience experience of the character experience.
I could fill a whole review ALONE with all the things they got wrong about Spain. Seriously, this movie is infamous here because of all the mistakes they made about Spain.
Got to give credit to Mission Impossible as a franchise for being around for almost 30 years and if the only one people dislike the most is the second movie and the rest range from solid enough action movie to great action movies that really push the limits of what you can do with filmmaking, than that’s got to mean something
I am guessing you uploaded this now 'cause of the Mummy also having Cruise? I am curious about your Projector on that TV-movie quality thing... I saw it yesterday and still regret not having watched Wonder Woman again instead.
I just watched 4th & 5th films and it doesn't seem like a egotrip to me. In the fourth movie he doesn't kill anybody and even has a though time fighting Michael Nyqvist. Also, rest of the team are big part of the film's climax.
Great beat down. It is a terrible movie. That said, I don’t mind the mountainclimbing scene, Cruise does look amazing. Just loop that for 2 hours and leave out the rest.
Well, i love the movie. I got into it in 2000 and i still get into it. Its not the best Mission Impossible, i know that. But its definitely not Speed 2 for crying out loud. So many people have been so shortsighted and unfair in their criticism of this movie. I think MI2 is ghe coolest Mission Impossible. I think MI3 is the weakest. I mean, did you hear that song during the end credits??
i admit this movie is a guilty pleasure of mine. But you're right Tom is seriously mugging the camera. Nothing is practical.... But it does look really cool. I guess they replaced good storytelling and plot for testroserone spluging on a screen
Broken Arrow aside from Pulp Fiction was BY FAR the best Travolta performance. Never found him talented (acting) but he does a pretty good bad guy whether it be Pulp Fiction, Broken Arrow, and Face Off
Wait you know , nostalgia critic ?! Wow you are equally good if not better , why the low sub and view count ? I've known nostalgia critic for years now never heard of you till recently

Hey Film Brain, have you seen/thought about doing a BMB for The Mummy 3?
I did have it at one point, and I think I had it earmarked at one stage, but I think I got rid of it because it was covered by MikeJ and later Calluna, and I don't usually like to do things covered by other reviewers unless I can put a different stamp on it. Mike J did a shameful sequel on it? Cool.
Fixed.
The NC cameo has an whole new meaning after the whole Channel Awesome debacle.
shadowspider9 yeah pretty much all videos of former Channel Awesome producers are a bit awkward now
@@RhyperiorRanger Namely the ones with Doug Walker in them

I feel the same way about Mission: Impossible II, although the love story and drama are really poor.
Brian Webber I am just glad this movie did not kill the franchise. This is the only bad M.I. film. The rest as good films.

Is this the sequel to Mission Impossible or Face Off, with all the removable faces.

At least Cruise did the mountain climbing and stunts for real rather than be doubled like Shatner...

Of course 'the middle of Sydney' is beach-adjacent scrubland, as all places in Australia are.
This could not be less like the original Mission: Impossible TV show. That's...every Mission Impossible movie, even if this is, absolutely, the most shameless in that regard.
Hot take: the only good Mission Impossible movie was the first one.
Just quietly....Ethan doesn't turn his back to the gun fight. It's called a 'swat turn'. And it looks sick when done in real life. :)
10:16 I kinda did believe he was alive but in my defense, I stopped caring long before and just accepted the idiocy.
I hate how often Badass Protagonists have to degrade a woman to prove how cool they are.
That doesn't make them badasses or cool. Just disgusting chauvinists.
That's just how most men are with their female partners.
The plot of the first one was too convoluted? Wasn't the intrigue the whole idea?
In my opinion, the first one is still the best of the series. Yes, the plot is confusing, and it will take multiple viewings to full understand, but the plot is really secondary to the audience experience of the character experience.
You should start doing Bad Movie Beatdowns again, loved these back then...
I could fill a whole review ALONE with all the things they got wrong about Spain.
Seriously, this movie is infamous here because of all the mistakes they made about Spain.
Ah, now I am curious. Could you provide me with a list, please.
Got to give credit to Mission Impossible as a franchise for being around for almost 30 years and if the only one people dislike the most is the second movie and the rest range from solid enough action movie to great action movies that really push the limits of what you can do with filmmaking, than that’s got to mean something
Lol Mathew your reviews are amazing! This is so entertaining.
9:04, Not learning his lesson from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen or Van Helsing
I generally Loved Mission Impossible 2 The Most Because it’s not really Mission Impossible But I did Like Ghost Protocol
Anybody else catch the bottle of lotion on Nostalgia critics dresser in the background? What y'all think, ashy elbows orrrrrrrrr.....?
I am guessing you uploaded this now 'cause of the Mummy also having Cruise? I am curious about your Projector on that TV-movie quality thing... I saw it yesterday and still regret not having watched Wonder Woman again instead.
,,Who left the fridge open??’’
This review was the whole reason Nostalgia Critic reviewed this movie recently.
I'm assuming the new one might have also had something to do with it.
At least the rest of the Mission Impossible movies are good. At least this terrible movie was not so bad it killed the franchise.
It's not Die Hard 5 or Terminator Genysis, but it was not good at all and was thankfully ignored for the good of this franchise.
It made half a billion dollars. There was no chance it could kill the franchise.
It was a massive hit but Cruise knew it was a hit in spite of itself as MI3 is very much 'course correction'
They use that mask effect a lot in this. It’s stupid but the end is fun.
I want to come back to this in a few years when we have chips in our arms. Not entirely bullocks, film brain.
Aren't all of the MI films just Cruise and his ego really?
thats the impossible mission, to jam the entirety of cruises ego into one film, and they kept trying repeatedly to do so.
I just watched 4th & 5th films and it doesn't seem like a egotrip to me. In the fourth movie he doesn't kill anybody and even has a though time fighting Michael Nyqvist. Also, rest of the team are big part of the film's climax.
The more recent MI movies are less so and put more of the whole team in the focus.
Could you imagine 2 missed their bikes
At least the franchise became good again with the third one and it stayed the same for the next several movies
Eh I like John Woo schlock
I just can't watch Tom Cruise and his ego. Since I'm not really into action/heist movies this hasn't been a problem..
Great beat down. It is a terrible movie. That said, I don’t mind the mountainclimbing scene, Cruise does look amazing. Just loop that for 2 hours and leave out the rest.
Good call, I hate this movie, an absolute blight on an otherwise great franchise.
A lot is practical [the climbing scene at the start, the knife near the eye] but it's easy to think otherwise given how over stylised it is.
Broken Arrow aside from Pulp Fiction was BY FAR the best Travolta performance. Never found him talented (acting) but he does a pretty good bad guy whether it be Pulp Fiction, Broken Arrow, and Face Off
Or maybe, they could of just got him on the helicopter and explained it to him then.
It's a dumb movie, but a fun dumb movie.
I partially agree. It's a dumb, dull movie.
This was a good movie. But the plot was weak !
Please do Transformers the last night
There was an alternate version of Hard Target geared more towards mature audiences called Hard on Target.
Wait you know , nostalgia critic ?! Wow you are equally good if not better , why the low sub and view count ? I've known nostalgia critic for years now never heard of you till recently
What is jumping out a building like a girl..?
This movie was ok actually my favorite mission impossible film
Every time I hear 'Ethan Hunt' I hear 'Berkeley Hunt'.
Australian stereotype? Isn't he supposed to be South African?
Nope, he's Australian, as is the actor playing him.
Listen harder😅
You clearly failed your mission, because they still made sequels.
First one to like!
