It's been like 8 years since I've been in Lake Lure, but there was a sign, specifically discussing the log scene and the log now being long gone, near the Rocky Broad Riverwalk and the Riverwatch, but I believe I was left with the impression that it was up Pool Creek/Wolf Creek, not over Broad River. Hope that helps!
We lived in Roanoke Virginia in the 90s until 2001. We visited Mountain Lake many times. We used to swim out to the wooden raft and sat in the sand. We hiked around and there were boats to take out on the lake. It made us so sad when we revisited and the lake was dry. We saw weddings on the Gazebo as we sat in the Lodge. We stayed in the Lodge and it was very nice. The lake is healing itself and it will be back. I am so happy we have pictures and memories of this beautiful place. Thank you for your video Magic Geekdom!
You are one lucky girl! It is my favorite movie. Always wanted to visit that place. I am 67 and live in Maine and enjoyed your video and see the excitement on your face. I have the DVD and still watch it. It looks breath taking. Thank you for the video. Stay safe and healthy.
Thank you so much for posting this. I loved it. Just yesterday, there was an article in our local news paper & TV news about the Mountain Lake resort reopening and highlighting Dirty Dancing. I looked up the location, Pembrok, Va, about 225 mi from my home on the Va coast. Spent today re-upping on the PC about the movie and cast, and just finished watching it again. In the end credits I saw NC as a filming location that was news to me so back to Google and right to you. You posted exactly what I was looking for. What scenes came from where. Very fast to find on Google too. (Get lots of practice) BTW, I am 75.5 and of course own the movie, lol. Thanks again. This video made a wonderful end to my day of Dirty Dancing study and movie. Nice work and God bless. Larry
Thank you SO MUCH for this video, from Poland! At 1988-89 (I am not sure the exact date) when Dirty Dancing came to Poland it was so popular that all young people start learn dancing (including me). I learnt mambo, cha-cha etc then. When I first saw Dirty Dancing I was around 18 years old and loved this movie very much. I still watch it with very nice memories. Thank you!
Found your video here just after watching Dirty Dancing for xxxxxx time and realizing that the location is mentioned at the end of the movie! 😳😍 I loved to see your video and to feel your joy to visit these places! It gave me goosebumps to see those places in real. ❤️ I am shocked about the lake! 😱 Thank you for sharing this experience with us! 🙏 In loving memory of Patrick Swayze! ❤️
I loved this! I just stayed in Lake Lure last weekend and of course we had to watch Dirty Dancing...1 of my favorites too! Now I want to go to "Kellerman's".
That was so beautiful and nostalgic! I always get this weird sensation of sadness and joy when I think of the dirty dancing filming locations. Especially at the Mountain Lake Lodge! Dirty Dancing is one of my most favorite movies of all time. I'm a little depressed though that the beauty of the lake is gone 😢 I'm glad I found your video. I hope that one day I can visit the Mountain Lake Lodge, and also take my sister down there with me.
Thank you for watching it! The water was even lower before. So, hopefully it's on it's way back to filling back up. Hope you can make it there someday. It's really pretty there!
I feel the same way; sadness and joy. But for no reason. I don’t know any of these people and yet the movie and these walk through snake me feel that way. Super crazy.
We were there today (6/17/21) and I'm sorry to say the lake is bone dry again, but it will be back in a couple of years. It's a regularly occurring phenomenon. It's how the lake cleans itself.
I love this video!! I remember the Lake Lure locations before they became subdivisions. My father in law had a cabin on Boys Camp Rd. We currently have a cabin close by and I enjoy kayaking into the Firefly cove inlet to see the stairs. Dirty Dancing was one of my favorite movies!❤️
Dirty Dancing is one of my favorite movies.I have lived in Virginia since 1976 and had no idea that the movie was filmed in my home state.i always assumed it was in the Poconos in NY.I will definitely be visiting the location soon. Can't wait. Thanks for the tour!❤
I just wanted to thank you for this amazing video!! I'm a huge fan of the movie and It felt like I was visiting the locations as they are today!! Such a shame the lake is dredge but it gave me the chills when you are so close to the lift location!!! I'll probably would go myself into the wild to search the cinder block where the platform for Patrick was!!! You are very lucky to see all those places from the movie, I wish I could visit them someday but thank you again for making us feel like if we were there!!!
Just thought I'd share some info on the Lake Lure locations. The house at 9:36 is not where the gymnasium was located. This is actually where the staff dance hall (where Baby first sees dirty dancing) and the dance studio were. The rock wall shown at 9:56 can be seen in the scene where Mrs. Schumacher drops her purse in the movie. The gymnasium was a little further down the road; closer to the lake (more on that later). The staff cabins were located where the houses and grassy area is on the right side of the screen between 10:05-10:19. Johnny's cabin was across the street on the hill to the left. Also, that road you're driving down is the road Johnny drove down after he was fired from Kellerman's and told Baby goodbye. Contrary to popular belief, the stairs at 10:41 are not 'Baby's Stairs' (so you didn't really miss out on anything). There were actually two sets of stairs, and the stairs at 10:41 led to the old gymnasium where all the ballroom dancing scenes (including the finale and Shelldrake) were filmed. The actual stairs where Baby carried the watermelon and danced, are back closer to where the staff dance hall/studio was located. They are in much worse shape than the 'gym stairs'. The bridge with white railing has been gone for many years, however the creek that ran under the bridge is still there. If you're facing the house at 9:36, ‘Baby's stairs’ are to the left of it (You can't really see them from the road). I'm not sure why everyone from the boat tour guides, to the visitor's center claims that the 'gym stairs' are 'Baby's stairs'. Maybe they just don't know any different. Or maybe they do know, but since the 'gym stairs’ are easier to see from the water, and look close enough to the actual stairs, they say these are the ones from the movie. Now, as far as the log scene goes, that's a tricky one. However, several sources say it was filmed at a farm in nearby Tryon, NC. The practice lift in the field (before the lake lift) was also filmed at this location. The lake lift scene was filmed in VA. As you mentioned in your comment to Tammie above, Linda Gottlieb talked about this in the documentary (and in several other places). If you take a look at the tree line in the background of the lake lift shot, it matches perfectly with the Mountain Lake tree line. The “beach” scenes were filmed in VA as well (as you mentioned in the video). Not sure how the rumor of the lake lift being filmed in Lake Lure got started, but it probably all started with one person, then just grew over the years.
I saw a picture of those “other stairs” and I was wondering why they were saying that was them when they looked nothing like them. I guess now I know. I also read that the water lift scene was at Lake Lure. I guess I’d better go back and change my comments. I’m one of those people with the wrong info I guess, sorry 😊
Love seeing the happiness in you while visiting these sights! My hubby and I did the same thing when we visited Portland with all the Twilight sights! (The scene at the Nancy Russell lookout was no joke to find lol) It was SO fun and he was such a trooper! Thank you so much for editing in the original scenes for those of us that haven't seen the movie in a number of years. Oddly it's been on my mind lately as one I need to see again. Great video!
The movie came out in 1987, it seems weird to hear that the staff cabins were demolished in "the 80's" and that one location burned down in the 80's. I wonder if most people stayed in rooms in the large lodge as opposed to small individual cabins like Baby's cabin. My idea of getting away from it all isn't to go to a crowded place like this with a bunch of planned activities and people I have to learn to interact with
I have been a couple times. First time was in mid 90s and we got to enjoy a paddle boat ride on the lake. Second time I visited was 6 years ago so sad it’s gone.
Oh my gosh! You are AWESOME! I stumbled on your tour of Dirty Dancing filming locations while I was researching a possible East Coast road trip. I'm watching DB Cooper next! Yesss! You made my day!
Your reactions are just what mine would have been! I aim to visit with my wife (its always been a dream of mine as we live in England and Dirty Dancing is one of my most favourite films). Thanks for the video!
I saw Dirty Dancing at the local multiplex with my first bigtime girlfriend in 1987. I was 15; she was 16 and looked like she could’ve been Jennifer Grey’s sister. There’s something almost spellbinding about the film. It’s up on Amazon Prime and I watched it for probably my tenth time in 25 years, just two days ago on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Anyhow there’s a secret barometer about this quiet epic from 1987: TONS of regular guys will eventually admit that the film is special to them for the same reason. Teenage love lost. Youth remembered. It might take a few beers and a little razzing but the film means something to more than just moms & daughters. I just turned a very youthful 50 last month and it’s just-odd-that all of us snowboarding, rave-going, Janes Addiction & Nirvana listening Gen Xers are fifty or a tad older. And Dirty Dancing speaks to the pre-Vietnam 60’s and the pre-internet 80’s. Lastly it seems like we grew up faster in 1987. At 15 and 16 respectively my “Jennifer girlfriend” (named Ali) and I zipped all over the SF Bay Area like we were 25. We had Depeche Mode. We had Guns n’ roses. We had U2. And believe it or not many, many VW’s and Hyundais had a cassette of the Dirty Dancing soundtrack in one of those Case Logic zippered bags. (sigh) Great video. Thanks for putting your heart into it. I guess for millions of us we …had the time of our lives 😉
I live under the mountain I wish people could see what I seen growing up in Giles county. Spent a lot of time on mountain lake . The lake was full not now . I remember when they was making the movie had friends working at the hotel. It was something to see back then.
Hello je suis Christophe de France je vous remercie par la vidéo que vous avez fait pour dancing dancing je suis très très fan des acteurs très fan du film et je vous remercie à vous deux et merci encore beaucoup beaucoup merci
This is so awesome! I love Dirty Dancing so much but never thought to look up if the “real Kellermans” exists anywhere! Love how much you got to see. So sad to hear about the lake and the gym and the stairs. But so cool that you can stay in Baby’s cabin and that you can go in the restaurant and the gazebo! Thanks for taking us there! ❤️
I loved the video! It makes me want to watch Dirty Dancing again lol! How awesome to have been able to visit all the spots?! Now I need to go to the inn so I can sleep in the same room at Patrick Swayze! I giggled towards the end when you were trying to talk about Baby asking for money and all the noise happening lol! Great video! -Jessica
Love this! Dirty Dancing is one of my fave movies so I've really enjoyed seeing these locations. Visiting 'Kellermans' is on my bucket list but who knows if that will ever happen, especially in the current climate. Thank you for taking me on a tour! Alison, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.
Hey!!!! This was such a great one!! Lots of fun info! Is a gorgeous time of the year to be up in the mountains. This was such a Cinderella movie for me when I was young. “Sigh”. I’m gonna share this with my bestie. We enjoy little road trip adventures like this. Love you guys mucho mucho!!
I was actually at Lake Lure today. I will tell you that the stairs you showed in your video are not the stairs from the scenes. My friend actually owns the lot the stairs that were used are located. The house next to his lot still has the foundation of the dance hall that burned down. My friend is going to refurbish the stairs and even add the rails back.
Thanks for the filming location. Patrick Swayze visited India to make a movie. He has blue eyes. One of his first movie's was riding on the board on waves. My favorite too.Salisbury park. Maharashtra.
You did a great job 👍 You are lucky to have been able to visit those film locations. There are pictures of “fans” on those stairs, so they may have trespassed or were there before the signs... too bad you couldn’t go there. I think I saw something say a boat tour will take you right by those famous stairs. So where is the white bridge she danced on & carried the watermelon? 🍉 I thought they might have spliced the dock footage from the hotel in Virginia and added the staircase scene to the end of that, but I guess they would have pointed that out to you. Thanks, I just finished watching the movie, I forgot how much I loved it 😍
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this vlog!!! One of my favorite movies also. I'm so jealous! I actually got emotional watching it. Lol. ❤ Patrick Swayze ❤. Thank you for showing us! 😊😊
Thanks, Danielle! We had a lot of fun checking it out, especially Cara. She definitely got a little emotional while we were at the lodge. Hope you're doing well!
"The last of the Mohicans" parts of the movie were filmed at Lake Lure/Chimney Rock and near there! Most where filmed about 40 miles east of Lake Lure in Burke County, Avery County "Linville Falls Blue Ridge Parkway", Lake James near Morganton NC is where the Fort was and lot's of battles were fought.
I watched your video and I enjoyed seeing the old clips from the film when the lake was there. Just inform you however the lake came up to the bottom of the steps on the gazebo sometimes it would go up to the second step if it was a a spring and summer with a lot of rain. If you ever went around to the other side of the lake where The boat House is you'll notice there's a ramp going into The boathouse the ramp actually went across water so if you'll notice those rocks at the far end of the lake where there is some water you can see how deep it actually was. I hope one day the lake comes back it's a shame that young people like yourself will never see it. Also the log scene that you were asking about was filmed at the Cascades national Park it's still in Pembroke but about 10 mi away from the mountain lake Lodge, where they were practicing in the field for the lift scene was on the old golf course at mountain lake as well.
Great video, I have some original photos of the boys camp from Lake Lure. The building where the last dance scene was filmed, and when Johnny first danced with Baby...
Fabulous video thank you for sharing 😁hoping to get out there when the world is a little less fragile I’m from the uk 🇬🇧 strange question but I love your hair colour what shade it is it’s fab
Thanks so much for sharing your experience. My Christmas present from my hubby is a trip to go to Mountain Lake Lodge this July and I can't wait to see all these Dirty Dancing sights! Not planning to go to Lake Lure, but maybe another time. Can't wait to go to Kellerman's!
The Magic Geekdom about the stairs ....... several years after the movie was made , they developed that land around stairs and built several houses ....... I remember in early 90's we used to drive to that spot and it was just as it was in the movie , the little wooden bridge at bottom of stairs was still there ! and the big building at top of hill was still there , it had already burnt though
@@TheMagicGeekdom it is, unless you live on mountain lake road, it is very rough in the winter to even get up there, it is a few mile drive up and down hills and curves, but it is so high up it usually stays snow caped for a while, it is pretty
This was cool Iam a big fan also, wish I could get up and go to see these spots but I know I would never be able to..... It’s amazing to see the lake how it was before and after today knowing it’s empty really sad to see that but have say it’s very cool to see these spots today 2020..... Wish I was near these spots but really far from me in LA California, thanks for the video appreciated.....👍
Hey there, I live about 45 minutes from Mountain Lake. I was really surprised that you didn’t film the actual cinderblocks Johnny stood on for the lift scene, they are there. Maybe you didn’t know that? But I enjoyed your video, glad you got to visit!!
Loved your video!!!! It was also one of my favorite movies as a kid. So sorry about not getting to dance on Baby's stairs!! I would have been disappointed too!! Great video tho!!!!
I went to Lake Lure NC with my family and it was awesome. The cool fact about it is that we drove by the gymnasium where the final scene of Dirty Dancing was filmed. I did uploaded a video of my adventure. Great area for families!
If you like this video, check out this playlist of other filming locations and interesting places: ua-cam.com/video/BzOn2Pls5ZY/v-deo.html
The log scene is in Virginia on your way to NC
And one of the houses is in my home town of falls mills Va
This movie back in 1987
It's been like 8 years since I've been in Lake Lure, but there was a sign, specifically discussing the log scene and the log now being long gone, near the Rocky Broad Riverwalk and the Riverwatch, but I believe I was left with the impression that it was up Pool Creek/Wolf Creek, not over Broad River. Awesome, a Good movie in one of the greatest Decades, in a better America....Long gone :(

This was so awesome, great video. I loved Dirty Dancing. That's really cool that the visitor center has a location map, I like when places do that.
Glad you enjoyed it, Marie! It was really cool that they embrace the Dirty Dancing fans. Hope you guys are doing well!
I loved this! I just stayed in Lake Lure last weekend and of course we had to watch Dirty Dancing...1 of my favorites too! Now I want to go to "Kellerman's".
It’s awesome!
Great job including both locations for this video. It’s also nice to see the lake making a come back. Very cool!
Thanks! Yes, I hope the lake continues to return. I'm sure the lodge would be more popular if they had a full lake again. Thanks for watching!

Just thought I'd share some info on the Lake Lure locations.

Great video!! Such beautiful locations for vacationing... I loved that movie too growing up in the 80s. Thank you for sharing!

Omg! The day the rock was dedicated to Patrick Swayze is my birthday ☺️!
Oh, wow! That's cool!
Thank you for uploading this!
It’d be amazing if they reconstructed the cabins & auditorium in N. Carolina.
That would be so cool! I wish! I think it's houses now though :(
You've just given me a GREAT vacation surprise! One of my wife's favorite movies.
I have been, make sure to rent a golf cart when reserving room $50 a day, well worth it.
This was so much fun, Cara! Great job!
Yay! Thank you, Karen!

Great video! So beautiful to look back from specific scenes 💖
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching it!
It's sad to see the lake has almost dried out! Thanks for the video. I had no idea this was open to the public.
Thank you for the tour and all the research you did.
Hi. I'm italian and I love Dirty Dancing. I love watching movie locations. Thank you for this video, great job.
I live under the mountain I wish people could see what I seen growing up in Giles county. Spent a lot of time on mountain lake . The lake was full not now . I remember when they was making the movie had friends working at the hotel. It was something to see back then.
Thank You!!!!I love the video!!!
Thank you for watching it!
This is fabulous thank you for sharing this 😃

Hi friend. Thank you for taking us along. We are in Lake Lure on vacation and are excited to see these spots.
Oh nice! It's a lovely area. I hope you had a nice time!
Thankyou for showing this video it’s great
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for watching and enjoying it! Cara was really happy to get to see it. It's really a beautiful place!
great film, also my favorite 11
Agree!
-Jessica
Thanks, Jessica! They were some fun and really pretty places. We miss you guys!
@@TheMagicGeekdom we miss yall too! Hopefully we can plan a meet up soon!
Wow this is so awesome 🤩 I love the movie dirty dancing
Thanks for watching!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks so much, Rebecca! It was a pretty fun one and not too far from you too. We love you too! Thanks for being so awesome towards us! 💙
I love this clip, great nostalgia. Thanks for the effort....BTW The dried up lake bummed me.
Glad you enjoyed it
It's a natural cycle...
Wonderful Video...thank you very much❤
Dirty dancing dancing is best grown up movie ever my favorite part the end
I'm so excited that I got introduced to your channel!! Absolutely amazing
Welcome aboard! Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the filming location. Patrick Swayze visited India to make a movie. He has blue eyes. One of his first movie's was riding on the board on waves. My favorite too.Salisbury park. Maharashtra.
Thank you for watching the video!
The path leads to an clearing at the top of the mountain… it has a great view going in the opposite direction.
Oh really? We should have gone up there. That sounds really cool.
Thanks, I just finished watching the movie, I forgot how much I loved it 😍
Thank you for watching it! Hopefully, we can make it back and Cara can see the stairs even if it's from a boat.
Nostalgy I love that movie 🎥
Such a classic!
Really enjoyed this! Just Subscribed!
@@TheMagicGeekdom 😊❤
@@danielleguastella6125dirty dancing is one of my favourite movies
"The last of the Mohicans" parts of the movie were filmed at Lake Lure/Chimney Rock and near there! Most where filmed about 40 miles east of Lake Lure in Burke County, Avery County "Linville Falls Blue Ridge Parkway", Lake James near Morganton NC is where the Fort was and lot's of battles were fought.
Mountain lake lodge has "Dirty Dancing"weekends. It is awesome.
Love this vlog, dirty dancing is my favourite film 😊
Thanks! We love it too!
Thank you for the extra info.
You missed the cinder blocks in the lake that Patrick had to stand on to do the lift scene, they are still there ☺️
Yeah we forgot to look for them! 🙁
Great vid 👍🏻😁
thank you!
Log scene was in Columbus, NC over a creek off of Hidden Valley Lane. That is in Polk County near the NC/SC border.
Thank you!
@tigergal5603 is this the legite location? I’ve read so many different ones.
We hope that you can make it there sometime soon. I believe Cara's hair is Lime Crime Chocolate Cherry. 😁
Great video greetings from Berlin Germany
I love your video, especially the emotion you show. From Spain, Madrid😘😘
Thank you so much!! So glad that you enjoyed it!
Did fantastic job the fliming good guidelines
I really enjoyed watching this(80's baby here)....Thankyou. New subscriber
How was it?
The Magic Geekdom about the stairs ....... several years after the movie was made , they developed that land around stairs and built several houses ....... I remember in early 90's we used to drive to that spot and it was just as it was in the movie , the little wooden bridge at bottom of stairs was still there ! and the big building at top of hill was still there , it had already burnt though
Thanks for the info! Good to know.
awesome, this place is like a mile from where i live, it is awesome in the winter
We'd love to see it in the winter. I'll bet it's lovely!
@@TheMagicGeekdom it is, unless you live on mountain lake road, it is very rough in the winter to even get up there, it is a few mile drive up and down hills and curves, but it is so high up it usually stays snow caped for a while, it is pretty
Cant wait to visit myself
This was cool Iam a big fan also, wish I could get up and go to see these spots but I know I would never be able to..... It’s amazing to see the lake how it was before and after today knowing it’s empty really sad to see that but have say it’s very cool to see these spots today 2020..... Wish I was near these spots but really far from me in LA California, thanks for the video appreciated.....👍
Thank you for watching and for your nice comment. We hope one day you can check them out! Hopefully the lake will continue to fill up.😃
*Awesome video!* ❤
Thank you!!
Hey there, I live about 45 minutes from Mountain Lake. I was really surprised that you didn’t film the actual cinderblocks Johnny stood on for the lift scene, they are there. Maybe you didn’t know that? But I enjoyed your video, glad you got to visit!!
Thanks for the tips!
Great job on filming and putting together the video I truly enjoyed it and I subscribed to your channel.
Thank you, Mike! So glad you enjoyed it.
@@TheMagicGeekdom You are very welcome 🙂
The wood picket fence where the sign hung is totally different than the original. Well done video.
Yeah, I thought that when editing, but the sign at the lodge said it's the same. lol
Loved your video!!!! It was also one of my favorite movies as a kid. So sorry about not getting to dance on Baby's stairs!! I would have been disappointed too!! Great video tho!!!!
Thank you so much!! We appreciate you watching it!
The stairs are right behind my aunt and uncles house!!! Their house is @10:13!!! hahaha this is so cool!
Really?! That's so cool!
Good job staying safe!
Thanks! We're trying to be safe, but get out a little bit more. Thanks for watching it!
Awesome I love this movie a great movie to watch 👍
I agree! It's one that I can easily watch again and again. 😀
Same here i watch this all time😁
Super gemacht! Grüße aus Deutschland! 😊
I went to Lake Lure NC with my family and it was awesome. The cool fact about it is that we drove by the gymnasium where the final scene of Dirty Dancing was filmed. I did uploaded a video of my adventure. Great area for families!
So cool!
Glad to see the water returning but to say the lake is back is a bit of a stretch
Fair enough.
