I was so tired of the carpet on the stairs, I ripped my carpet up myself!
Then I thought to myself... OH MY GOSH!!! What have I done?
I then called some local handymen to see how much would it cost to
refinish my stairs. The lowest cost was $1100. Oh Dear?
Then I ran across your post. Thank you!! You were so detailed.
    You my dear are AWESOME!!!
I really didn't have the money to pay someone to do the job.
Thanks to your post I'm now doing it myself. I was so lucky. My 15 year old
home was build with some terrific looking stairs. I've done the sanding and
    woodfill. I am so excited!
    Thank you!

Which is exactly why I decided to do mine myself... it was more like $8,000 for me, because the spindles were attached to the stair treads.
Good luck... I would love to see your results! You could send me a pic to: HectaFavorites@gmail.com

This exactly what we have in our home. The spindles attached to the top of each step. Very expensive to have done by a floor company. We are lucky that we have overlapping carpet covering regular sheet rock to the connected walls instead of open area needing a insert.

He went away for a weekend once, and when he came back I had totally changed the kitchen cupboards, added moldings, and painted them a new color! He said:"Do you think that looks good?" I said "Yes, I do." He said... "I do too." (His question could have been taken either way, that he did, or he didn't!) lol

You truly turn the most simple things into works of art, but these stairs..... that is just incredible. I've often told my husband I wish we were neighbors so I could just follow you around and pick up some of your ideas, creativity and "guts" ( for lack of a better word ) I hope your kids picked up on all your ideas. This was a great video. I made the mistake by painting our stairs a dark brown and put carpet steps on them. After 7 yrs I want to make them look like yours but am worried I will have to sand the stairs. I'm going to try scrapping first. I love how you mixed the colors. I'm definitely trying this. TFS great job by the way, they look beautiful.

BsAlteredDesigns You may have to sand the steps some, but wood filler is your friend!! lol It's like make-up, covers a lot of flaws! (I considered painting the steps in that new popular ebony color... BUT... I don't want to be dusting every day, which is what that would entail!! And stairs seem to be dust collectors. (And I would rather be crafting than doing house work!)

Hectanooga1 - Crochet, Knitting, Jewelry, Crafts, Cooking You are something else! Will you post a video of it? Or perhaps a before and after photos. :-) I hope he takes you out to a fancy restaurant for all that work. Hugs from my family to yours..

Chelin Fusco You know what? I rarely eat at restaurants... I don't trust the ingredients that might be in the food.... I looked at the board to replace it... but it has huge thick bolt like screws in it... don't think I would be able to manage to remove them.. so I guess I will have to wait for him..... dag-nab it!!

Amazing! I have a similar carpet on my stairs and I guess I'm going to do the same

Wow!! Great job especially doing it all by yourself! I'm actually doing what you did right now to my new home. Tore out the carpet to find medium rough steps underneath; not as bad as yours looked. Still sanding them down and removing the paint. Sooooo tedious... Thanks for the video!!

+chipperknick010 Hi Chipperknick! Yes, it is tedious... but soooo worth it.
My husband was pleased... he knows me, so I can't expect excitement from him, when he goes away, he never knows what he might come home to. But my friends were very excited to see the transformation! I often stand in my hallway to admire them, I so love the fresh look!
