    Interestingly for me, I am dealing with the exact same layout. In my case a raised bungalow. Good points throughout. Your video moves along at a great pace. A lot of UA-camrs could learn from your effective editing. I might not agree with all your steps but this was informative and well done. Thanks for sharing.

    I seriously was just watching this to see how to prep the steps themselves, and before I knew it I had watched the whole thing! Very helpful and moves at a great pace. I could easily grasp what you were telling us to do and will most certainly be using this when I'm ready to actually do it (I just got all the carpet off today and need to get some more stuff together before I can seal it and all that good stuff). Thank you for this great video!

    I enjoyed the thoroughness of this process and well done video. I would definitely suggest using a poly/stain product such as Minwax that comes in different shades for oak and satin, gloss, and semigloss. Any of the Lowes, Home depot , or Walmart will have their brand of combination water or oil based combination poly/stain product.

  • @timpickinpaugh3720

    All bases completely covered. I’ve done a couple staircases and many hours of research on techniques and they are all covered here. Stop here and follow this vid and you’re good.
    One thing I needed was after using dampness to bring out the grain, before staining use a water based pre stain wood conditioner. This will make sure your wood looks consistent and not blotchy. It’s cheap and you will regret not using it if one of your stairs absorbs inconsistently. Learn from my mistake!
    Thank you for this vid.

    I have this facing me soon. A plan of action I have (because it's our main stairs, and there's no option other than to use them) is to stain and varnish every second tread, so we can at least go to bed and not be trapped upstairs and when the first lot are done, move on to finishing the alternating stairs.

    As a professional French polisher, I can tell you this is one of the better how do videos, this guy does at least have the knowledge to back up what he’s talking about and he was pretty much spot on with his procedures, although I would do any paint stripping before I started sanding. Having said that my advice is on old pine stair treads would be use carpet! They are just such a pain to do, this guy has made it look easy, it’s not.

    • @aoifemariegrant1774
      @aoifemariegrant1774 Місяць тому

      We are in the process of doing ours, it took a full nine hours taking out all the little tacs (not including the tons of staples) that's had been holding down all the old carpet! There was hundreds of them, each one had to be very slowly drilled around so we could loosen them enough to pull them out with pliers! Then all the old gloss that was spilt (not us) has to be paint stripped then sanded off, next step, wood filling hundreds of tiny little holes!!

    8:20 the only thing I have to say is you don't want to put a fan on polyurethane until you let it dry for a couple hours, and especially if there's pet hairs around, that High Velocity fan can pull dust like nobody's business and it will get stuck into your finish if you don't let it harden up a bit first. there's plenty more drying to be done so the fans are important especially for walked on surfaces. Awesome results 👍 good job

I now have light and dark patches as well as staple marks still. Did your belt sander go deep enough to get most or all of the marks? Did you use wood filler on those marks or on the flaws in the wood. Im working with pine.

    Good video. I would recommend not letting caulk dry against tape. Not as crucial in a dry location like this. But you risk damaging the perfect seal you have created at that taped edge, when you pull the tape up on dried caulk.
