I work as a Payroll Clerk/HR for my town of 4000 people and I administer hundreds of payroll and benefits every week, and I am the lone Payroll personnel for my township. I work alongside the Chief Administrator, Town Clerk, and Treasurer with developing HR and payroll management systems. Working in my field is alot of paperwork and documentation. Time management and organizational skills is a top priority. Many people that come in the field think it's all about writing up a check every week or so but it's not about that. Human Resources is one of the toughest job there is you have to be on point with everything and able to meet deadlines. And everything is a long process.

I have the opportunity to become a Client Experience Specialist for a payroll software company. They hire people with and without experience. I do not have experience. I feel like I would need to gain more knowledge in the software itself, because the software does majority of the math for you. Do you need to have a heavy background in math if you are using a payroll software to process payroll?

@@valenkennedy3879 I worked as Accounts Receivable part time for my dad's company for 5-6 years after high school and that's where I got the experience I needed for my current job. I also helped with AP/Payroll throughout my tender at my father's company. Out of 30 applicants I was hired by my township with my experience and knowledge in the field. No education or mathematics is needed but experience is highly preferred I would say. And as for the software, I was trained by the management how to utilize different accounting and payroll softwares at both my father's company and the township, and so I would say you'll be trained how to use the software.

Great video Carmen, I love this video format!! I'm mainly covering recruitment during my internship but I was just given some heavy payroll tasks for a few weeks. I thought I would be relieved to hand it over to someone else, but surprisingly I kind of miss it!! Recruitment somehow feels more tedious and draining to me these days.

Thank you! And I’ve had those moments before! It can be very draining to focus solely on recruiting, especially in this current job market. I normally stay away from straight recruiting roles for that reason, I prefer to have a variety of responsibilities. But at least now you know you actually enjoy payroll! Recruiting + payroll is great experience for a HR manager role in the future. Hang in there :)

I work as a payroll specialist for one of the global companies. She is 10000% correct, but with global companies, you must know how to be adaptable, how to people manage (clients will get upset, try to evade, try to covince you, and escalate you to the fullest), how to problem solve, and most importantly, how to have that balance of sitting on an email to an client that requires a response immediately and doesnt.. also..TAXES.. each state is different. Also to note Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 is a commonwealth and has its own set if rules along with Northern Mariana 🇲🇵, Guam 🇬🇺, American Samoa 🇦🇸 as well on certain things. Also because of some strange treaty Micronesia 🇫🇲 has a whole thing were they can become clients. It IS a high level of stress... people NEED to be paid.. but you need to put yourself in their shoes and it CAN be fixed. Another thing she doesn't mention.. Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, and a few other states have these things called "Localities" where taxes are collected whether lived in (I live here), worked in (I work here), or both (I live and work here). It's challenging, but it can be rewarding. Some of your favorite brands are clients mine more than likely and they are happy.

@@yvettemartinez6757 No, it was entry level. I didn't even have office experience! I had warehouse experience for the most part. I'm still at the same company. It's a small company (I do in-house payroll for a construction company). I've heard payroll companies like Paychex hire without experience. I haven't switched over to those type of companies though because I'm afraid it'll be too much like a call center (you have to deal with clients). I like my job because I don't have to interact with customers. Even employees don't call me very often.

In accounting there are no rooms for mistakes you sign a contract that makes you obligated to zero mistakes and if you are to make those simple mistakes no matter how hard or how simple the case may be you are responsible for money there are no mistakes and there can't be any mistakes you are responsible for the financial lives of many people the whom work and you are responsible to getting sure that their paychecks and their benefits are distributed on time and without fail and when that doesn't happen you're fired you are terminated from your job immediately because you went through training you have a degree you signed a contract there are no mistakes

Interesting. What country is that about? I live and work in the UK now and there are SO MANY mistakes with people's salaries here. I understand what you say about responsibility and this is how it should be indeed, but in reality I feel like there are no any consequences towards ppl who make mistakes with our salaries. And they usually don't care that you need your money right now, they just tell you they'll fix it next month lol

I'm interested to know as well. I have a psych BA and have almost 1 year experience in payroll.
You can get into HR as an assistant and probably work your way up to an HR manager. That's a very popular career choice for many psych grads.
My HR manager has a Master's in HR. So it might help to get a Master's in HR while working as an HR assistant.
