So i watched all 3 of your strategy videos and they helped me soooooo much thank you! I feel like i'm still doing things wrong though and I was wondering if you could do me a huge favor. If i sent you some recorded gameplay of mahjong against ai could you maybe explain some of the things im doing wrong? I wouldn't mind if you made a video of it and I understand if you dont have the time. Thanks

Using poker terms for the English translation can be a bit more helpful. Trips (chasing edge wait) , gut shot (edge wait) inside gut (middle wait) double gut shot (double middle wait) Outside gut shot (2 sided) A gut shot in poker is defined by the attempt of chasing any hand and the number of outs that it pertains. Usually applied to chasing straights An out is defined by the number of cards in the deck that could get you a winning hand. 3457 is chasing a gutshot with 4 outs The 11 waits is just counting outs.
i dislike your examples..in most of your examples the point values of the hands are extremely low..some of them have riichi as their only yaku. if youre winning 1000 point hands...one dude who can build hands properly and hits a mangan can wipe out your 8-12 wins in 1 go.
It depends on things like if you're playing with red 5s and if you're prioritizing getting 1st vs avoiding last, etc, but in general I think it's best to know the best way to proceed to any winning hand, and once you know that it's easier to figure out the best way to proceed to a specific higher value hand, and easier to determine if it's worth going for. Basically making a higher value hand requires most of the same skills of just making a hand. Also, one trap that people fall into is pursuing yaku too much, so I would prefer teaching how to make a hand first. If you get riichi, you have to chance for ippatsu or uradora or tsumo and you get high value hands just like that
true, im currently 4kan (i think thats what its called? in tenhou) and I always end up playing into 12000-18000 point hands...while I can only manage to build 2000-8000 point hands most of the time..if I get any higher..its not intentional..I was looking into how to intentionally increase the value of your hand and the most efficient ways to go about doing that...or whens the best time to open your hand.. as of now with starter hands I either go for a tanyao or terminal hand by default..depending of which route gets me to tenpai faster. If I can build other yaku in the process..great..but most of the time that isnt the case...especially when you discard a tile, only to draw a matching tile on your next turn (for example..discard a dragon..only to pull that same dragon again.) ...based on your examples..tanyaos would be the most efficient hands to play with the most amount of helpful tiles..but its not a very high scoring yaku.
Ranks go from new player, 9kyuu to 1kyuu, 1dan to 10dan, then tenhou rank, so it's either 4kyuu or 4dan. Pinfu is really common to aim for. People aim for some combination of riichi, pinfu, tanyao, dora a lot, but of course getting those requires some luck. There are some things you can do to aim for higher value hands but a lot of it is still luck for getting something good. Also there are different styles of playing that can work out, like aim for fast hands more, or aim for big value hands more, call more, etc.
Thats pretty cool, when do you feel a hand is ok to fold? and how do you go about folding when multiple players have riichi'd I play in other people hands more often than I think I should even if I fold what should be safe tiles. I even played into a hand when a guy was waiting on a North wind in the west seat and someone had discarded a north in the previous turn...things like that puts you on tilt. Lol. And I checked it and its 4kyuu.

The problem I have is that I either build a winning hand with no yaku, or aim for a yaku based on my opening hand, and never get there. This is one of the best tutorials I have found. Much better than fumbling around with the tiles. Using examples was a great idea.
