I'm 28, and I felt every bit of this shit to my core, dude. I used to love spending time on forums, it was my main form of social interaction (shut up) and I made a lot of friends on them. Now, most of those friends are gone, and the forums are all dead. I literally can't *find* a forum, anymore. It fucking sucks!
@@asadd2 Which sucks because no one on Discord will read a sentence more than 10 words long. You could basically post a whole book on a forum and people would respond with lengthy replies. This allowed for some really interesting discussions about everything from game mechanics to lore. Now, it's mostly just people posting something vapid and replies saying "this," "mood," "bruh," or "wrong." The internet promised to advance communication, but it destroyed it.
When you realize not too long ago people were made fun of for filming vertically, only for it to become the norm. It really feels like the universe is fucking with us sometimes. fml

Literally why I clicked on the video after the most recent Tonkatsu Sinclair one. I just had to go see how the video ended up there from starting with TikTok.
This is how to rant. Not with some wild spin on some logic train or calling specific people out or ideology, but just a solid rant with some good humor as frosting.

Yeah, one advice I can give you is never, ever in your life change that. Long reason shows below. A toxic "smartass" started it with me, so I entered reddit. Still trying to connect to things on it, but it is a decent pooper activity. Some youtubers, twitch streamers use twitter and it seemed useful, and it still is for some news. I got curious for instagram, then managed to soft-lock my 3 e-mails after "registering" because their system is "'+!%/ (login:no account on e-mail/register:already an account???), but my phone number worked, and so as I entered, it's nothing, just some people putting up their pretty pictures. I found Quora, no idea how, but that's truly a gem, clever people talking about useful, science stuff. Even the comments are amazing, all of them go into details of the post and why or how it could be better or specialized in some cases. Then vtubers came in the big C time, and with that I felt an urge to not be antisocial anymore and try to be a bit more normal. So, now I'm trying to fulfill the hole created by all the other platforms (except quora, I love it) and giving you an advice you're in control of taking. Why am I doing this? Why are you seeking an answer to that?
Why'd you have to remind me of pre 2010 era fansites? Man, back then I was on so many wonderful small fansites for Star Wars, Dragonball, Silent Hill, etc. and now every last one of them are gone forever!
it all started with GeoCities communities. That was when we should have seen this outcome. Gone were the days of individually hosted fan sites. Instead everything turned into cookie cutter boards, until we are here, wiki this, wiki that, facebook/twitter for all else.

Hell, man, I'm 40 next month. From the fingers-crossed mid-life crisis to remembering the good old days of the weird, niche, make-your-eyes-bleed color schemes websites of yesteryear, this hits so many notes. And the worst part about the monoculture of the internet is, well... where the fuck else are you going to go? Me, it's UA-cam, Facebook (yeah, I know, I've established I'm old, fuck off), Wikipedia, and maybe one or two other websites that cater to my interests. Sure, it's nice to have fiber internet now, but all it means is that I can go as fast as I want to the equivalent of the corner grocery store instead of the slow drive to the hobby shops and restaurants I used to go to... if that analogy makes any sense. Anyway, welcome to getting old. At least we're all in this fiber-optic train to hell together, right?
I am not even over 30 and I am starting to feel like this. The Internet was such a magical place before... Y'all remember the Amnesia mods? The golden age of Newgrounds? All the legendary things you should never look at, but you did anyway? Like Two girls one cup? Lemon party? It was basicly a secret rite of being an experienced internet mole. I was never on MySpace, so I can't really tell how it was... but remmber the early stages of Facebook where it didn't steal your private information? Yeah, me too. Remember those times that people on the internet didn't do things for money, and just did it for fun? The animations, all the videos when UA-cam was still young! Ah, such beautiful times... Now that bastards found out how to monopolize the internet besides just making ads, the Internet is now nothing more than a boneless skin puppet, dancing on many strings but no one sees the puppeteer... I miss Rage Comics....I miss the days when taking someone on the internet seriously was as stupid as trying to kill a god with a comically large spoon... I miss the days when Numa numa and fuckign Crazy Frog was not considered a "classic" but just catchy new songs or a catchy new song that came out a year ago... I shouldn't feel like this... but I do. Not all the things about the current internet are bad, but the times passed and the memories of them is like a knife that stabs deeper every year.
UA-cam and Discord. That's the full extent of my "social media" usage. Anything else is a cesspool I'll go out of my way to stay faaar away from. And who in their right mind seriously thinks filming vertically is ever a good idea!? So many websites are formatted for viewing on phones now, with about 30% of the left and right sides of the screen being blank space.
There are days when I look at my friends and family, doing their social media thing, and I think to myself "Should I be doing that too? Is that what people do now? Is it too late for me to get in on this?" And then I go take a look, and remember exactly why I have yet to join them.
Hey, I'm 10 years younger and I'm with you. Fucking Cellphone cancer. The worst for me is that I don't even use my cellphone for anything, so I'm completely left in the dust by my own generation due to me being too busy cringing at them.
I’m 24, but I might as well have been born in the 60s, I’m very old fashioned! Not long after I got an Instagram account, I thought I’d try out TikTok … I lasted 5 minutes on TikTok before deciding I couldn’t work out what was going on and deleted the app! I esd slso the last person in my year at school to get a phone, not even an iPhone at first, because I was dead against owning an iPhone. I agree the internet has gone downhill in recent years. I use Facebook, but hardly post anything on my own page, I post mainly in communities and groups. However, there are hoards of people on Facebook I see who post absolute rubbish, and I think, why do you feel we need to know this?! Also, why do those life quotes that have pictures of the Minions on them exist?!
I still follow the old rules when it comes to my identity, there are no photos of myself on the internet, I have google searched myself from time to time.
7:01 The sites I use on a daily are UA-cam, Twitter, 2 different manga sites, a novel reading site, Google, and a hentai site... on occasion I'd pop on by Twitch, Reddit, or the Steam site. And yet, I spend more hours a day online, on average, than the number of sites I use. This man speaks the truth.
i didn't go on the internet much before being in my 20s so i always get this weird second hand nostalgia when people talk about the good ol' days, anyway this video has really good energy
"Remember when you didn't put any personal information out on the Internet?" YEAH! I still don't do that. I put out just enough information that seemed reasonable only for a small circle of friends, we all met online, and even then, when I did and was a little cryptic about it, one of my friends looked up my address and sent a Google Street View image of my house! I don't even remember giving them my entire name! You can't even trust people with broad terms like the state you live in! Once you give an inch, they take a mile! I'm still in contact with these friends, and the one that sent me my own information is now working in human resources, so you know, that's comforting... At least they're in a completely different state that doesn't border mine. Or so I assume, they could be lying... 😧
Did this happen on Discord? That service is filled with freaks. You don't have to give them a name. You just have to screw up and post something like a photo with geolocation in the exif data (discord does NOT wipe it) and they can do that. Even without exif data if there's a street sign or unique building they can find you on google street view if they have a few hours to kill, especially if they know your city.
How the hell did I forget that it used to be the golden rule was ‘never put your personal information on the internet’?! Granted I avoid social media like the plague by default but still
now you building hype for your youtube videos. you're becoming such a master at showbiz! while I disagree with your thesis, I think a lot of its points will be valid from a specific perspective. I believe if we were the age of the average cell phone internet user today, we'd think just the opposite. I think smart phones made the internet accessable in much the same way the nintendo wii has made games accessable. In the end the audience for both have grown to include people we wouldn't usually associate with such things, but in the end that's more healthy for a product than the niche gatekept monopoly the nerd types would have on such things, as that'd eventually die out as more and more people are discouraged from liking the same things by people who insist you must already be an expert with such things. also I love the zoomer memes. love your stuff bro.
Holy crap, I miss the good old days when the Internet was run by _people,_ not cynical corporations. This video is basically my exact feelings on the matter. Maybe we should just start a new Internet somewhere... just over there. Yeah, there, where no-one's currently looking. And put a big sign outside the front that says "NO KEYBOARD? NO ENTRY. THAT INCLUDES YOU, MR ALGORITHM. DON'T THINK I DON'T SEE YOU THERE."
I'm from even further back. I used to post on the local BBS sites at 300 baud on my commodore 64. I used to have a geocities website in the late 90's. I chatted on IRC and posted on newsgroups. I hate everything about the modern internet and I hate that I'm so addicted to it.
Thank you! I never get why/how people can post their faces all over the place. I had one picture of myself on Facebook and some creep found me on Skype 0-0
Damn, you're totally right! Never realized, that tik tok format is so stupid, just flip your phone, but you can't because it's default. Yeah, you are totally right about internet, I think it all became less anonymous with things like facebook, it all came downhill from there
I love this one comment by Agent Phil Coulson in season 1 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Great show on Netflix, about to be taken down this year, highly recommend) where he remarks how much easier his job has gotten since everyone started putting all their information on the internet. I forgot how much fun the internet used to be.
Personally, I miss the qwerty keyboards on smartphones. It made texting so much easier. I've used a Blackberry since 2009, but it'd sure be nice to have a modern android phone with the option of a qwerty keyboard. Hell, why not just have a modern equivalent of the Blackberry Torch - you got a big touch screen, you slide it up, and underneath is the keyboard.
I already watched this video a few days ago, but I just wanted to come back and say how much I love everything you've been putting out. So glad you're still around.
It was your review of High Guardian Spice that brought me to you. It was your first so many videos that made me a subscriber. It was this video that made me hit the bell.

While part of me is glad they can’t be tracked on the Wayback machine or whatever because I was probably a complete cringey mess back then I do miss the funny communities we had. It really felt like a family unit.
Here's me with my love of big phones because I sorta use them like a tablet because I don't actually need to use my phone as a phone any more. Also not happy with photobucket. All the forums with step by step model builds I used to use and contribute to a lot have basically all died because "Paywall or we'll block everything you posted a decade ago lol."
Yooo, you are so cultured. Man, I got so happy when you mentioned Strongbad emails. Could never remember what my favourite episode was, I just remember that he was in a montage doing mean stuff to every character, and one of them was gifting Marizpan (the earth worm lady?) a buzzsaw. XD And G.Michaels? You're a legend.

There's an uprise in videos about a pre corporate run internet and I'm all for it
The fact I agree with much of this gives me an instant midlife crisis at 24.
God, I miss the days of talking with friends, finding cool little niche sites, and spreading them around.
@@TheDapperDragon Exacly.
For what it's worth, I'm still ignoring twitter in hopes it will go away.
Is it too late for me to get in on this?"
And then I go take a look, and remember exactly why I have yet to join them.
You verbalized something that I couldn't mentally parse but absolutely felt. I'm 32 and I felt all of this...
Thank you. You are an absolute treat, and the Internet needs more people like you in it. People who speak the truth that no one wants to hear.
Hey, I'm 10 years younger and I'm with you.
Fucking Cellphone cancer.
The worst for me is that I don't even use my cellphone for anything, so I'm completely left in the dust by my own generation due to me being too busy cringing at them.
Same.
Never bothered with tiktok. Thought it was a clock app or something.
"Remember when you didn't put any personal information out on the Internet?"
YEAH!
Granted I avoid social media like the plague by default but still
came here from the mlp videos. I'm SO GLAD i just learned for sure that its your crazy personality I love. Apparently MLP was just the delivery system
You need to make these rants a serious. They're hilarious and dead on.
God I miss the old internet before 2010ish
That rant about personal info at the end is why my facebook is set to private.
now you building hype for your youtube videos. you're becoming such a master at showbiz!
while I disagree with your thesis, I think a lot of its points will be valid from a specific perspective.
"No keyboard/No entry" is a good one.
We'll make our own internet, with blackjack and hookers, and keyboards, and landscape cameras
I'm from even further back. I used to post on the local BBS sites at 300 baud on my commodore 64. I used to have a geocities website in the late 90's. I chatted on IRC and posted on newsgroups. I hate everything about the modern internet and I hate that I'm so addicted to it.
The sad day when you find out your the Boomer.
In 10 years when you have like a million subs. Remember I was here when you were under 5k.
Thank you! I never get why/how people can post their faces all over the place. I had one picture of myself on Facebook and some creep found me on Skype 0-0
Underrated channel. You deserve waaay more subs.
Thank you. Hopefully that will happen eventually.
"Phone posting degenerates." Yes.
That rant. Wow. I feel that.
PREACH IT MY MAN!!! TELL IT LIKE IT IS! FUCK 99.9% of social media!
Once more, with FEEEEEEEEEEEELing XD
Man, I remember all the random forums and art sites I was on back in the day.
I like how you found a subtle way to promote your own Twitter on the very video bashing all forms of social media.
Might be his best video on the channel! I agree 100%! That's why I barely use anything but UA-cam and Amino.
oh god i forgot you were all in on the alice game. had me dying
Maybe because we all watch too much television and we seek many ways to find that good old Hollywood feel. Maybe we should return to the monke.
Man, I miss my old Nokia 2210. It feels like phones are getting more and more degenerate since then.
Yooo, you are so cultured.
Man, I got so happy when you mentioned Strongbad emails.
Could never remember what my favourite episode was, I just remember that he was in a montage doing mean stuff to every character, and one of them was gifting Marizpan (the earth worm lady?) a
buzzsaw. XD
And G.Michaels? You're a legend.
This almost perfectly sums up my attitude about the internet these days
5:40 saddest realisation of growing older : so do your favorite pornstars
10:40 reminds of a post I saw a long time comparing ORwell's dystopia where info is restricted to another author i sadly can't remember who wnet the opposite direction by saying there would be too much information so you can't find anything of worth that as opposed to the hour of hate from 1984 you would get empty joyful feelings time.... Fuck i'm the one weirding the apocalypse now...
Basic internet etiquette indeed. It's fecking baffling that people are using selfies as *profile pictures* on more anonymous platforms like Discord...
Really enjoyed "that other channel" but this is even better...first it felt like a combo of Foamy the Squirrel and Husk from Hazbin Hotel, but nah. Its original and unapologetic but cool to see and lisening to.
Keep it up!!
And thanks for this video. I needed the laughs.
Good show man! Loved the simple yet entertaining animations of your avatar head, seems like you had fun making the expressions on it.
And you would think that's about tictoc but actually it's about internet in general. Liked that twist
Wait wait wait tho why have I never thought of the fact that Tik Tok has slowly indoctrinated us into being ok with filming Portait mode when 5 years ago people would literally YELL at you for doing so!
