I would love to see more videos on trimming bangs, adding waves, straightening the hair, thinning, and trimming the sides or back of wigs, etc. I would have enjoyed your "flop" too (on adding beach waves that you mentioned in another video) I can learn from those too ;) I tried shampooing a synthetic wig with a little fabric softener and didn't see much of a difference. I would like to see a video on how you wash your wigs and what products you use. Thanks so much for the steaming a wig video! Another note.. I agree with a few other people who commented. I appreciated that you didn't fast forward this video. It was also helpful to hear why you would return a wig. THANKS AGAIN!!
Thanks so much for these helpful suggestions, Simone! I will add these ideas to my list for possible future videos. Just FYI, I plan to film a video where I will be trimming bangs on a wig and possibly thinning it in the near future. Hope you have a great weekend!😀❤
HUGE Thank You! I have three wigs that I paid a lot of money for and never worn. I could never figure out why the didn’t look like what the model was wearing, this is a game changer
I wear a bob and I needed this video for the exact reason you made it: to address the orientation of the fibers at the front of the face. I am glad I now have a solution to re-directing them away. Hoping I do as well as you! Thanks!
So informative. I wish I had seen this video before as it would have saved me a lot of time and energy fighting with fibers that wanted to fall forward. Thanks so very much. I’m so glad I found you!🥰
I'm so glad you did too, welcome!!😀❤ I love hearing that my video is helpful and will try to add more tutorials to my video selection. Have a great weekend!
I'm so happy! Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial. I am new to wigs and not spending a lot on my wigs right now. I think I will be getting a steamer to help flatten the permatease and remove some flips in the front. This is a game changer, for sure.
Yay!! I'm so glad to hear that you found my video helpful!😀 I hope you love the results! Thank you so much! The most helpful video I've seen on steaming a wig. I like to cut bangs in mine, but they stick out crazy, lol. I'll have to try this!
Just what I needed to watch! I've struggled with, and done some damage to, several pieces trying to get rid of those tusks. Now I see what I was doing wrong and feel confident I can likely salvage some of them. Also the permatease correction was excellent. I never thought that could be so easy. Thank you for taking the time to instruct us. Your work is appreciated!
I had a curl that bumped out on my Paula Young wig. I fixed it using a large round brush and a hair dryer. I didn't even have to wet it first. I used to use the large round brush and a hair dryer on wet hair when I wanted the Farrah Fawcett look in the 70s.
I'm glad to hear that this method worked well for you! I have not tried it myself and, as a result, can't personally recommend it. I'm concerned about the amount of heat and the type of brush that would be used - both could cause damage to synthetic fibers. Thanks for sharing!💖
@@micheleswigreviews Didn't seem to do any damage on mine. I was very careful using the dryer on high heat just long enough to use the round brush to pull the curl straighter. Not real straight. I see Beth, on Beth's Best Hair often using a heated brush dryer on bangs.
I just received my very first topper, and the bangs are crazy. Your video has helped me to decide to keep it and try to fix it, because I like pretty much everything else about it. Thank you so much!

Some hair out but I saw no real diff and she mentioned steaming on my other topper w/permanent tease but didn’t do it. Disappointed as I used them before and the owner although so encouraging for hair loss just terrible at customizing. She hacked a $700 Jon Renault REAL hair topper! so I thought since only place around try someone diff. Very young. Anyway, you gave me confidence to give it a try. Hope the steamer you used is listed!
Good luck! I used the "isteam Steamer for Clothes" from Amazon. The steamer is great for flattening a Permatease bump. If the Permatease is all over the top and visible on the surface, I would use the Zig Zag parting method shown in this video - ua-cam.com/video/l-GjnVy4Qds/v-deo.html 😀❤
That was a great tutorial about steaming wigs to alter the shape. I'm sure other wig wearers know the disappointment of ordering the same style of wig you've loved & thee new one is not a flattering shape or silhouette. I'm hoping to bravely try what you have taught us. 😮😊

Do you ever use the plastic hot air brushes? Do you find steam is just easier? I’ve seen more and more reviews and guides using dry heat. What are ur thoughts on both?
That's such a great question! I do use a plastic hot air brush on synthetic fibers. I think both the steamer and the plastic hot air brush are great tools for styling wigs. I prefer using the steamer to change the part and style the fibers away from the face because the steam is very hot and can really change the style without stretching or damaging the fibers. I like to use the hot air brush for relaxing curls and flips. I'm much more careful with the hot air brush (either using it on low heat or on high heat while keeping the brush moving, not keeping it in any one place for too long) because you are simultaneously heating and pulling on the fibers. If you're interested, here is a link to a video where I use the hot air brush. ua-cam.com/video/-noABApJwjc/v-deo.html Hope this helps!❤
Your video was so informative. I’m needing to buy a synthetic wig and I’m looking for a shag style or soft waves to the wig. Looking for hand tied. Low density is a must. I’m older and I don’t want a bouffant hair style. Can you put a soft wave to your wig? Do you have a video to show that? Thank you so much.😊
I'm so glad to hear that you found my video helpful!😊 I don't have a video for how to add waves to a traditional (non heat friendly) synthetic wig - the only heat I recommend using to add waves to these fibers is steam because the fibers can melt. I do have a couple of videos for how to curl a heat friendly synthetic wig. Here are the links to those videos - ua-cam.com/video/qZd-gzIu7bw/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/dJQhscJngcI/v-deo.html. In general, Ellen Wille has been known for their low density styles and they have quite a few partially hand tied options. Also, the Jon Renau Lite Collection is light density and the cap is 100% hand tied. Another brand that offers lighter density styles is Belle Tress. Their Lux Collection is mostly hand tied. I recommend watching reviews for the styles you are interested in and looking at the weight in the specs. Hope this helps!💖
Thanks so much, Judy!😀Good luck steaming your Sky - I hope you like the results. Just FYI, if there is a lot of Permatease visible on the surface, then I don't recommend steaming the top to flatten it. Also, I think flipped ends (a/k/a "tusks") can be a pretty look - it's just a question of personal preference. According to Harper's Bazaar this hair trend is back!👍💖
I appreciate your videos. I would love to see you trimming a topper. I am a long time wig wearer but not very skilled styling and cutting However, I prefer the toppers because of the comfort. Please help if possible. Thanks
Hi! Thanks so much!😀I have a wig trimming video that I will link here - ua-cam.com/video/Ir84Ci_2k90/v-deo.html I don't have a topper trimming video. Hope this helps!💖
Hi michelle! I will try this steamer on my wigs that are too wiggy on the sides and top. Do you plan on making a video to thin out bulky wigs on human hair? Synthetic ? Thank you for this video😊
You're very welcome, Marie!🥰 I have not reviewed any human hair wigs. I do have a video on my channel for how I like to thin a synthetic wig. Here's a link to that video - ua-cam.com/video/l-GjnVy4Qds/v-deo.html. Hope this helps!💖
What are you wearing during the video? It looks so very natural pulled back, not bulky at all. Sorry if already asked & answered in comments. I skimmed & didn't see it. Thanks!
I'm wearing Zara Lite by Jon Renau in FS6/30/27, Toffee Truffle. She's perfect for a ponytail because of the low density and ear-to-ear lace front. Here is a link to my review for her ua-cam.com/video/2oOT7Oiv9xo/v-deo.html. Thanks for your question! I will add this info. to the description box.❤️
I thought it was your natural hair !and loved how you had parted it while making it look full in the Crown area* I’m new to your channel and so appreciate what you have reviewed And your tips….thanks
Thanks again for this video on steaming. I just recently purchased a steamer and will be following your directions. I have a question regarding trimming the synthetic hair. Does it dull your scissors? I have very good sharp hair scissors that I use for cutting human hair so I don’t particularly want to use them if that is the case. Should I purchase a pair of scissors for using only on synthetic hair?
You are so welcome! That is a good question about the scissors. I have read that the synthetic fibers may wear down the blades faster than natural hair. I use the same scissors for both my hair and my synthetic wigs and have not had a problem. However, if you spent a lot of $ on your good scissors, it might be a good idea to have a separate pair of scissors for the synthetic wigs. Hope that helps... good luck!😀❤
Learned lots from you, use steamer is a great ideal to work on the wig, I already order my from Amazon, thank you Where can buy the wig with scalp like the one you had?
Hi Sharlene! You are so welcome - I'm happy to hear that my video was useful!😀 I purchased this wig (Cameron by Jon Renau in 6F27, Caramel Ribbon) from wigs.com.❤
You may have just saved a very expensive synthetic wig with a crazy top layer of shorter curls on a long, straight, shoulder-length bob. Someone did not assemble this correctly! I am going to try this steaming technique.
Great tutorial! I’m ready to work on some of my wigs. Can this be done to heat friendly wigs, as well? I may have missed a comment regarding them. Thank you!
Thank you! Great video. I’m a new wig wearer and the wig I purchased has a lot of flips at the bottom which I don’t care for. I will try the steam method but do you recommend a certain level of heat for the steamer? Mine has several heat levels so I am wondering which would be safest? The lowest, medium heat or highest?
You're very welcome!😊 My steamer only has one setting. I recommend working with the lowest setting and testing the underside of your wig to be sure that the heat level is safe for the fibers. Hope you love the results!👍💖
Hello Michelle, i have a problem with my hair pieces(synthetic) , some stylists insist on putting a bend in the top and front and i have staight hair...so im always fighting that bend...my latsest guy ordered my piece straight and wahla!! perfect .....now im going to get a cut in on a new piece (different company} but it has a bend ...no cut in at all yet ...what do i tell them? cut first then steam or steam staight then cut ..opinion? ps this is a mans synthetic system...lately i feel like i cant win. my great guy who ordered my pieces couldnt get the right color or grays ....so i went to a place where the color matched but when i showed the woman how i like my hair on the longer size ...she cut it way too short, and did her whole idea we tried adding more hair and i just hate this system....i need your opinion on the straightning...im going back nect week and getting a woman who knew it was cut too short///PLEASE RESPOND ...THANKS JIM!!!!
Hi Jim! I'm sorry you're having so much trouble getting hair pieces that you like. To answer your question, I would definitely style/steam the piece the way you want to wear it first (in your case that would be straight) and then get it cut. That way it's easy for you and the hairdresser to see if the length is right. Hope this helps & good luck!❤
I’m gonna try this! I bought JR Aria and I’m having a hard time getting the part I want to stick and one side is flopping in my face a lot. How often do you need to do this?
Hi Annie, I normally only steam my wigs once, when I first get them. When you change the style on a synthetic wig with steam, the new style will stay in place even after washing. Of course, you can always steam your wig again, if necessary. Be sure to direct the steam at the fibers, not the delicate lace front or monofilament and keep the steamer moving. Good luck, I hope you love the results!👍💖
@@micheleswigreviews Your welcome. I will be looking forward to any future videos & review some of your past ones as well. Your personality shows through - you're warm & personable. Thank you.
That is a great question! I'm not 100% certain of the answer but I think it would be a good idea to wash the wig to remove the hairspray first. If you steam your wig with hairspray on it that might cause the fibers to be pulled on more than usual which can damage them. Hope this helps!😀❤
I'm sorry, it looks like the particular steamer I'm using is no longer available on Amazon. Here's a link to a Jon Renau wig steamer - www.wigs.com/products/wig-steamer-accessories-jon-renau. If you use the code MICHELE25, you can save 25%. (I receive a commission.) Here's a link to the HairUWear wig steamer - www.amazon.com/Hair-u-wear-HAIRUWEAR - www.amazon.com/Hair-u-wear-HAIRUWEAR-Steamer/dp/B08BCRSX4N/ref=sr_1_5?crid=3AW45OH4V6C1W&keywords=wig+steamer&qid=1691686672&sprefix=wig+steamer%2Caps%2C114&sr=8-5. I don't have experience with these, but basically, almost any hand held clothes steamer should work. You can always test the steamer on the underside of your wig first.👍💖
Hi Lesley! I use the "isteam Steamer for Clothes" from Amazon. It's a handheld clothes steamer. I purchased it in 2019. Their current handheld steamer looks different and I have not tried it. HairUWear (Raquel Welch is one of their brands) and Jon Renau each have wig steamers on the market. You can purchase them from www.shirleyswigshoppe.com. I'm a reviewer for Shirley's Wig Shoppe. Hope this helps!💖
Definitely!👍 Just keep in mind that once you remove/relax the curls on a synthetic style, it's a bit tricky to recreate them. Hope you love the results!💖
@@EmmieBeck68 That is a great question! I'm not 100% certain of the answer but I think it would be a good idea to wash the wig to remove the hairspray first. If you steam your wig with hairspray on it that might cause the fibers to be pulled on more than usual which can damage them. Hope this helps!😀❤
I see you and I choose the same kind of browns- a golden brown with golden blonde highlights (NOT ASH!). I'm struggling finding this color in the Esthetica line. Any ideas? I just ordered Caramel Kiss but so far i've returned about 3 others that list the description as what I want but when it arrives its NOTHING like the description. The color I'm after is similar to Jennifer Anniston"s hair color in Friends...GOLDEN BROWN
Have you tried Estetica's R6/28F Chestnut Brown with Red Frost? I think this is pretty similar to Jon Renau's 6F27. You could always get Estetica's color ring to see the colors before you commit to buying a wig. Hope this helps!❤
@@micheleswigreviews I prefer not to have anything with red in it. And Chestnut brown isn't the brown I'm looking for. It's too dark for me. i'll keep trying. Like I said I have one being mailed to me called Caramel Kiss. i'll see how it goes. Thanks for your input.
My steamer is only one temperature (it simply has an on and off switch). If you are concerned about the steamer being safe for your synthetic wig, I know Jon Renau makes a steamer for wigs that many wig wearers like to use (I have not tried it). Here's a link to it on the Wigs By Patti's Pearls website - www.wigsbypattispearls.com/jon-renau-steamer.html. (I'm a guest reviewer for them.) I also suggest testing it in an inconspicuous area of the wig first. Hope this helps!💖
My 1st wig is a Cameron, so I've watched this many times! But no matter what I do, nothing stays put. The hair on the right side of the part won't stay back and out of my face, and I've steamed that area (in layers) like 10 times already. You made it look so easy! Any tips/ideas? I'm a total newbie. p.s. My new steamer doesn't leave water droplets on the wig; maybe it's too wimpy?
I'm so sorry to hear that the steaming has not been working for you! You might try a different steamer. I suggest testing the new steamer on the underside of the wig first to make sure that it's safe for the fibers. FYI - Jon Renau and HairUWear each have steamers that are marketed specifically for steaming wigs (I have not tried either of these). You can buy them on Amazon. Also, two products (formulated for synthetic fibers) that I have used and can recommend are the TressTech Wig Wax spray and the BeautiMark Shaping Creme. You can buy these products on Amazon as well. Hope this helps!💖
Thanks for your reply! I tried my old clothes steamer and that had more kick to it than the new steamer I'd bought. Definitely more effective. I still need to keep working on it, but the front hair is much less floppy now!
Is it safe to steam a wig that has product in it? (Hairspray, conditioner, etc.) I'd think not, but I've never heard/read any mention of it. Just curious...
Good question! I haven't ever done that, so I can't say with certainty whether it would be safe or not. I would recommend washing your wig first if it has product in it. Conditioner should be fine, since many wig wearers use steam to refresh/defrizz their older synthetic and heat friendly synthetic styles.👍
Drew is a beautiful style!👍I'm sorry to hear that you are having a hard time getting her to look the way you want. The term "Permatease" is a combination of the words permanent and teasing. Basically, some fibers are crimped at the base of the wig. Permatease is generally used to add volume, lift, and body to a style. It can also be helpful for concealing wefts. If a wig has a full mono top and/or is fully hand-tied, you will have less Permatease in the style, if any. Hope this helps!💖
Hi Cathy! I have never used steam from an air humidifier to style my wigs. However, I don't think it's the water that changes the style, I think it's the wet heat of the steam. You could always give it a try...💖
I would love to see more videos on trimming bangs, adding waves, straightening the hair, thinning, and trimming the sides or back of wigs, etc. I would have enjoyed your "flop" too (on adding beach waves that you mentioned in another video) I can learn from those too ;)

Could you please do a video on cutting the back of the hair. Thank you. Can you please tell me the color of your Cameron? Pretty.
Absolutely - I plan on doing a video soon about cutting the back of a short wig and a long wig. This Cameron is 6F27 Caramel Ribbon. Thanks!😀❤
That’s very helpful! Thanks so much🌸
You are very welcome, I'm so glad you found it helpful!😊💖

Thank you. ❤

I can't wait to try steaming the top of my Sky. She is SO tall!! Great video. (I happen to like "tusks", though...lol)
According to Harper's Bazaar this hair trend is back!👍💖
I like that wig?!!!!!
Thanks!😀❤

@@LPoppy2023 Welcome Lisa - I'm so glad you're here!😀 It's wonderful to hear that you find my reviews and tips to be helpful! Thanks for watching!❤
What kind of steamer are you using? Mine has died and I need to replace it. Thanks for all of your wonderful information. Xo
This was so helpful! Thank you !!!! You look great! What is the color of that wig?
Thanks and you are so welcome!😀❤ The color is 6F27, Caramel Ribbon.
@@micheleswigreviews Beautiful!!
Learned lots from you, use steamer is a great ideal to work on the wig, I already order my from Amazon, thank you
Where can buy the wig with scalp like the one you had?
Hi Sharlene! You are so welcome - I'm happy to hear that my video was useful!😀 I purchased this wig (Cameron by Jon Renau in 6F27, Caramel Ribbon) from wigs.com.❤
You may have just saved a very expensive synthetic wig with a crazy top layer of shorter curls on a long, straight, shoulder-length bob. Someone did not assemble this correctly! I am going to try this steaming technique.
Oh good, I'm so glad to hear that you found my video helpful!😊 Good luck, I hope you love the results!💖
Great video ! What color are you wearing and did you shorten this Cameron wig ?
Thanks!😊 This is Cameron by Jon Renau in 6F27, Caramel Ribbon. I did trim one side a bit after I relaxed the flips.💖
Please what is the company name and color...love it...thankyou❤
The wig I'm styling in this video is called Cameron by Jon Renau in 6F27, Caramel Ribbon. Hope this helps!💖
Great tutorial! I’m ready to work on some of my wigs. Can this be done to heat friendly wigs, as well? I may have missed a comment regarding them. Thank you!
Thanks, I'm so glad you found it helpful!😊 Yes, I use this same method on my heat friendly synthetic wigs as well!👍💖
Good to know! Thanks for responding! 💕
@@margop7345 You're very welcome! Happy steaming!👍
Thank you, I actually ordered the one on Amazon you linked in your video just to be safe!!! 😊
Merci!!!
De rien!💖
@@micheleswigreviews thank you Michele!!!
Awesome!
Thanks for watching!😊💖
I’m gonna try this! I bought JR Aria and I’m having a hard time getting the part I want to stick and one side is flopping in my face a lot. How often do you need to do this?
Hi Annie, I normally only steam my wigs once, when I first get them. When you change the style on a synthetic wig with steam, the new style will stay in place even after washing. Of course, you can always steam your wig again, if necessary. Be sure to direct the steam at the fibers, not the delicate lace front or monofilament and keep the steamer moving. Good luck, I hope you love the results!👍💖
This was informative and important info & instructions for me! Thank you 😊

Can you steam if there is dried hairspray on the wig or must the wig be clean first?
That is a great question! I'm not 100% certain of the answer but I think it would be a good idea to wash the wig to remove the hairspray first. If you steam your wig with hairspray on it that might cause the fibers to be pulled on more than usual which can damage them. Hope this helps!😀❤
Do you have a link to the steamer you recommend? Thanks
You can always test the steamer on the underside of your wig first.👍💖
@@micheleswigreviews thanks!
Is the steamer an item that is specifically for wigs or is it a clothing steamer? Brand/model please.
Hi Michele, do you think I could straighten my Soft & Subtle wig with steam? It's a bit curlier than I'd like. Thanks so much!
Definitely!👍 Just keep in mind that once you remove/relax the curls on a synthetic style, it's a bit tricky to recreate them. Hope you love the results!💖
@@micheleswigreviews Thanks so much! I might not actually do it - but it's good to know!
@@gigihadeed2491 You're very welcome!😊
Should I wash my wig first before steaming ?
That is not necessary. I wash my wigs as little as possible to prolong the lifespan of the fibers. Good luck!😀❤
What if there is dried hairspray on the wig?
@@Grace-fp5ts Good luck!😀
Take a look at R8/26H!
Is there a certain temperature that you use on the steamer or is it only one temp?
My steamer is only one temperature (it simply has an on and off switch). If you are concerned about the steamer being safe for your synthetic wig, I know Jon Renau makes a steamer for wigs that many wig wearers like to use (I have not tried it). Here's a link to it on the Wigs By Patti's Pearls website - www.wigsbypattispearls.com/jon-renau-steamer.html. (I'm a guest reviewer for them.) I also suggest testing it in an inconspicuous area of the wig first. Hope this helps!💖
Is that the hairuwear steamer please?
I'm using the "isteam Steamer for Clothes" from Amazon.💖
@@neatdesign You're very welcome! Yay, I'm so glad to hear that your old clothes steamer is working for your wig!!👏
Bought my first wig (jon renau drew in caramel ribbon) and am having a wonky time getting it to look the way I’d like. But what is permatease??
Drew is a beautiful style!👍I'm sorry to hear that you are having a hard time getting her to look the way you want. The term "Permatease" is a combination of the words permanent and teasing. Basically, some fibers are crimped at the base of the wig. Permatease is generally used to add volume, lift, and body to a style. It can also be helpful for concealing wefts. If a wig has a full mono top and/or is fully hand-tied, you will have less Permatease in the style, if any. Hope this helps!💖
Can you please confirm that steam CAN be used on non heat resistant synthetic wigs?
Confirmed - steam can be used on traditional (non heat friendly) synthetic wigs. Be sure to use the method as shown in this video.👍💖
Is it okay to use a cool steam from an air humidifier to style them?
Hi Cathy! I have never used steam from an air humidifier to style my wigs. However, I don't think it's the water that changes the style, I think it's the wet heat of the steam. You could always give it a try...💖
Thank you so much for your fast reply!
