I thanked you yesterday for helping my no start condition after I replaced the DME relay, and today I'm here to thank you for explaining how these switches should be programmed. This solved my problem and combined you likely saved me hundreds of dollars at the mechanic.
Thank you so much for this explanation. I had spent a couple of years living with no control of the passengers side window and had assumed it was a wiring issue in the door. After watching this video I was up and running in 10 min. Can't thank you enough!!!
Looks like Edrodas is now my top UA-cam channel. Just bought an 83 944 and the windows don't work, door stops are broken, one headlight is out, fuel gauge doesn't work...motor, clutch are strong though and body is solid.
3 thumbs up, I had an intermittent driver's window. Just took apart and cleaned the contacts on all 3 switches. Working perfectly now. Thanks for showing how they come apart. I did have to rebend one of the springy copper strips to get a good contact.
This video was great. I was trying to figure out the window switches in my early 85 944 yesterday. Passenger window would only work by pushing both switches simultaneously. 17 years with a 944 and didn't know there was a "correct" orientation to the contacts inside. Everything works now. Thanks !
Thanks, edredas! Another good video. I will be buying a 944 that needs work sometime soon. I have watched all your technical videos - I really appreciate the way you go into details and explain everything. Keep up the good work!
Hello! Thanks for this video! I am restoring my 968 with exactly the same problem. I think that your video is key to the solution. Thanks for all your videos. I think all your subscribers can tell that you are putting a lot of work your videos bringing them to the level they are. Best wishes from Taiwan. (928, 968 & 996)
I hope it works! If it does, let me know and I'll make a video using that 1986 944 so the later car guys can see how to fix their window issues, as well! Thanks!
Dude this video saved me. I would have been lost trying to figure this out. I was able to rearrange the driver side left switch and got the passenger to work. I then tried fixing the driver side window switch and it had flat plates not curly pieces inside so I believe that is an aftermarket that was wrong? Thank you so much!
Previous owner of my 924S went further... instead of fixing the switch configuration so the driver's switch will operate the passenger window, they just cut and spliced the wires so the passenger window would work. Just not the driver's side switch being able to operate the passenger window. I guess they were ok with leaning over to press the passenger window switch.
Many many thanks for this very helpfull video it solved my problem in 10 min after hours of disasembling and reasembling the wrong switch. Thanks again, Paul. France.
Nice video. I've always had issues with these switches. Now it's crystal clear how to fix them (and not buy anymore replacement switches most likely). Thanks!
Thank you, I have that problem, and I think I made it worse, because I was touching the passenger switch and now none of them work! Tomorrow I will do what you say, I hope it works for me!
Thank You For this info my mechanic put a bigger fuze in and the windows worked for a while and then stopped. I probably need to clean them and pay attention when re assembling them.
My 1985 V2 electric windows where working perfectly, but this morning go figure my wife’s first ride, the passenger switch only works going down now, but the driver side switch is able to drive up/down the passenger window. Weird. Again the passenger door switch only now allows down. Could it be that when she slammed the door shut for the first time something happened. This is such an educational channel.
Could be corrosion in the switch. May have been making good contact until it was used then made a bad connection. I see something like this quite a bit. Sometimes just opening them up carefully and cleaning them will help.
This video rocks you are the man my girls side of our 944 window didnt work but slowly on my side I think my cousin who thinks he knows it all and that had this car before me he broke stuff and couldnt figure the proper way to fix things he must of also touched that because it was totally going the same way haha thank you
Thanks for the great video on how to do this. Now I can figure out how to get the right one working again on my 83 944 , you are the best on You Tube 😎 😎 😎
Great videos. I have a 84 944. My switch does the same thing example #2. I got a parts car (Early 85) and pulled the motor to rebuild it my self, so I have a torn down 2.5 that I will do from the bearings up and use the later model oil cooler housing and PRV valve. Long story short, because of the videos I can tackle the main seal on the current 2.5 in the car and fix a lot of other things. PS I don't mind working on the ground.
Awesome, I'm glad these videos helped! I don't mind the dirt either, while being in the shop on a creeper is nice, I get just as dirty either way! Thanks!
Thank you for your help! I’ve got my passenger side window working but have determined that one switch doesn’t work. All contacts clean and correct. The bad switch was blowing a 25amp fuse but now cleaned and put back together it doesnt blow the fuse anymore but still dorsnt work. New switch?
If that one switch doesn't work when you plug it into the drivers window socket then it should be replaced. I personally haven't had much luck buying new switches since they are designed differently than the originals. So I often replace them with original ones from a breaker or junkyard and clean them up to get them working.
German engineering! Gotta love it!! Why they didn't run power to each switch separately and an additional two wires from the drivers side door... I already have one of your shirts and I have to comment on that, very nice quality shirt! Keep up the good work!!
Good question! Because if the driver decided to put the window up when the passenger wanted it down, it would blow the fuse. Wiring it like this means that the driver switch overrides the passenger switch! I hope the helps!
Also, thanks for ordering a shirt! I'm going to try and come up with some new designs soon! I'm also very happy with the quality of these shirts for the price! Thanks, again!
edredas Your welcome! For anyone thinking of buying one of the shirts, just do it. They are very comfortable and very nice looking shirts, you'll be glad you did.
Great info. If all switches are working but one window goes up and down faster than the other, how do you fix it? Remove door panel and lube the gears and guides? Thx!!
Yup! Also be sure to check the power at the plug to make sure you have battery voltage there. That could indicate that the motor isn't getting enough power through the switches. Once that is done you can grease everything up and don't forget to remove the motor and grease the shaft. Good luck!
Another great video. What I think would be a great video and might get quite a few views would be a buyers guide. I really enjoy your videos and have learned quite a bit by watching them. I will soon be buying my first 944 and know about timing belts and such but what would really be helpful is what to look out for when purchasing one. For example are there things specific to the 944/924s to pay more attention to. Just a suggestion. I can't find anything like this on UA-cam. In any event please keep posting these and thanks.
I'll see what I can do! The belts and the clutch are perhaps the two common issues that would cost the most money to fix. I'm sure I could do a video on what to look for. A lot of these cars have been neglected, resprayed, stripped down or repaired by ham fisted teenage mechanics. So you'll want to to buy the best best example you can afford. That said, what makes you want to buy a 944? While I'm sure I could make one dimensional video of common issues, I would like to know what makes someone want to buy a 30 year old car with a huge lumpy inline-four cylinder?
edredas I remember when these were still in production when I was a kid and I always loved the way they looked. I have been looking for a fun vintage sports car for about a year and went through a couple of options, Triumph TR6, Porsche 914 for example but always come back to the 944. I'm not in need of a lot speed but I would like handling which from what I have read is the car's strong point. It just seems to tick all the right boxes for me. They also seem to be gathering more interest these days so I think there may be more people like me out there.
Sounds good! Nice to have some insight, I know how I got into them, but that won't be everyone's story. I'm sure most people would prefer the cars with the oval dash, since it looks more modern. Not to mention, the last early car that I drove was really had some really bad road noise and I think it was due to the steel control arms. I'll see if I can't drive an early and late car back and take a sound measurement. Regardless, cars have come a long way and the harshness of the engine and road noise even on the later cars wouldn't be acceptable on a tractor today, but they are fun and unbreakable cars when put together right!
Bought a 1985 (early with 924 dash) 944 today. 147,000 km (less than 100k miles, I'm in Canada). Fuchs wheels, perfect interior with no rips and service records. Thanks again for these videos, they help convince me to buy. Please keep them coming.
Thank you! I will inherit my father-in-law’s 1983 944 which has a passenger window that won’t work. Do I buy one switch and replace the drivers side passenger switch or should I buy two (one for passenger door and one for drivers side passenger switch? 👍
If neither switch is working then I would verify that its getting power before buying new switches. That said, it could be that both switches are assembled incorrectly and you could fix them in a couple of minutes. Good luck!
thanks, yet again, for your videos... .my problem is with the pass. window and drivers side button. ... It works... but only if you press the button on the side . If you press the button straight on, it doesn't work... only if you press it in the corner. I am assuming it is not the same issue you are talking about but perhaps bad contacts. Sound correct? if so, thanks for the instructions on how to put it back together after cleaning.
Yup, sounds like there could be some corrosion inside on the contact which is very common. You might be able to open it up and scrape it off, but this isn't always the case. Sometimes the switches are just worn out and need to be replaced. I hope that helps!
I will be drawing the winner of the Tee-shirt tonight on my facebook page: facebook.com/edredas-192753884577/ Here's a link if you would like to purchase one of these shirts: www.zazzle.com/edredas_garage_t_shirt-235868296266944084
Does the car start and run? The power comes straight from the ignition switch into the fuse box at plug E. It then goes through the fuses and the relays for the power windows and sunroof. For neither of these to work it sounds like you have some corrosion on plug E. However, the coil also receives power from the same plug that the windows and sunroof does, so if the car runs its likely something past plug E, perhaps another plug at the fuse box has corrosion which is causing an issue. I hope that helps!
I haven't looked at the wiring diagram for the later cars but I would assume that the wiring is similar. That said, its fairly common for people to pull the early switches apart due to their design, and I would think this is a little less common on later cars since I'm not sure they come apart as easily. I hope that helps!
The drivers side window will work with any switch, even if it's assembled incorrectly. The passenger side switches have to pass power through them in order to operate the windows. So you can stick a bad switch in the drivers side and it won't tell you anything because the window will work perfectly fine.
I have an 86 944 and the windows will roll down without the key in.. is that normal? My battery drains after a week of not driving it and I was wondering if it's the problem..
Could be the issue since the windows should only work with the key in the on position.. Sounds like someone wired something up wrong and perhaps something on that circuit is draining the battery. I once saw someone do something similar on another car where the wipers weren't working so they straight wired them. They not only worked all the time but it caused the blower motor to run all the time until it drained the battery. Good luck!
Hi. I have what might be a similar problem in my 1988 944 turbo. But it's regarding the power central locking system. The switch on the center console operates both door locks. The lock on the passenger's side door operates both door locks. But the lock on the driver's side door does not do anything for the passenger's side door lock. When i turn the key in the driver's side door lock, there is no electrical switch activity at all. It just manually locks or unlocks only the driver's side door. I assume the problem is in the driver's side lock somewhere since that side has been used to lock and unlock the door for 30 years. Any ideas what the problem might be? Thanks. Matt in Clinton Township, NJ.
Sounds like you might be on track. I have that same exact issue on one of my own cars. I've never actually had the time to look into it but I believe that the drivers side lock is worn out. I hope that helps!
Hi, remove the black plastic cover then you'll see a bracket. Remove the bolts and the nuts holding it on. Then remove then nut to on the shaft of the motor and it should come out. To remove the wiper transmission will require removing the wipers and the nuts underneath. I hope that helps!
Could you make a video showing the location of the relay for the passenger window? I've already done all 3 switches and it still won't work. But if I put direct power to the motor itself it goes up and down. So it's got to be the relay. And also do you know where the cooling fan relay is for the radiator? Thanks in advance
The power window relay supplies power to both windows, so if the drivers side window is working then the relay is working properly. Hopefully, someone hasn't bodged your wiring to it. I'll see what I can do as far as making a video on the window relay location, but for now you can can find it behind the center console where the HVAC controls are. As for the cooling fan relay, it is the very first relay on the left side upper bank of the fuse box. I hope that helps!
edredas that does help tremendously! The wires have been messed with though it's very apparent. I had thought about trying to run them to toggle switches I have mounted in the center console area, But I want to keep that factory look.
Problem is they been working fine for 6 year and never been removed. Ill check the assembly if correct then its a bad switch. "UPDATE" I used contact cleaner and it fix the problem! Those funky looking Springs we're on in the right order too
Most of the time with the later cars replacing the switch itself will fix the issue. To test it before buying one you can try swapping in your driver side window switch to see if that solves the problem. Good luck!
They are on the same fuse which is number 8 on the upper bank. If the fuse isn't blown it could also be the relay which is in the area behind the radio.
Also, on my 86 924S the driver side switch and passenger side switch work, but the driver side switch which controls the passenger side doesn't work, do you have any suggestions?
@@ballvice7861 it's behind the radio in that area. Hard to describe since it's just a lone relay on the harness not affixed to anything usually. I hope that helps!
So in a scenario where the passenger side won’t roll down at all, neither switch operates it, what would be your first thought on the problem? Thanks Kevin
I believe that if both switches are assembled incorrectly you can end up with this issue. It might be a long shot, but checking them would be easier than pulling the door panel and checking the voltage at the plug or testing the regulator. I hope that helps!
My nails and hands are clean 90% of the time, but touching even little things like switches makes them dirty. I mean work on cars not try to look pretty. Thanks!
I thanked you yesterday for helping my no start condition after I replaced the DME relay, and today I'm here to thank you for explaining how these switches should be programmed. This solved my problem and combined you likely saved me hundreds of dollars at the mechanic.

Yes, some aftermarket ones made by URO have a different setup.

My driver, passenger and even sunroof switches don’t do anything. Any ideas?
Does the car start and run? The power comes straight from the ignition switch into the fuse box at plug E. It then goes through the fuses and the relays for the power windows and sunroof. For neither of these to work it sounds like you have some corrosion on plug E. However, the coil also receives power from the same plug that the windows and sunroof does, so if the car runs its likely something past plug E, perhaps another plug at the fuse box has corrosion which is causing an issue. that is great information does that also stay true to the later years i have an 88 944. the switches look different than the ones on you 924.
I haven't looked at the wiring diagram for the later cars but I would assume that the wiring is similar. Off brand switch : 25 USD Porsche brand switch: 78 USD wow lol GREAT video!
You’re the best man!
You are a genius
Remember that the drivers side switch only controls 1 window
So that is a good way of testing all three
Cleanlness is important
The drivers side window will work with any switch, even if it's assembled incorrectly. The passenger side switches have to pass power through them in order to operate the windows. So you can stick a bad switch in the drivers side and it won't tell you anything because the window will work perfectly fine.
ill have to try this on my '83........ right after the timing belt and full engine reseal is done😁
Good luck!

Well said
how are you popping those switches out?
You can use a plastic trim tool to gently pull them out.
Thanks for the quick reply. I will tear into it in the next two weeks and let you know what i find.
No problem! Thanks!
edredas It was the driver's side door lock micro switch. All better now. Matt
How do you remove a 924s wiper motor and drive mechanism from under the windshield base.
Hi, remove the black plastic cover then you'll see a bracket. Remove the bolts and the nuts holding it on. Then remove then nut to on the shaft of the motor and it should come out. To remove the wiper transmission will require removing the wipers and the nuts underneath. I hope that helps!
Thank you
Could you make a video showing the location of the relay for the passenger window?
Those funky looking Springs we're on in the right order too
Anyone have ideas on what to do if the switch isn't working on the passenger side on an 88?
Most of the time with the later cars replacing the switch itself will fix the issue. To test it before buying one you can try swapping in your driver side window switch to see if that solves the problem. Good luck!
Both of my driver side and passenger side switches were working but then they both stopped working at the same time. What could this be?
They are on the same fuse which is number 8 on the upper bank. If the fuse isn't blown it could also be the relay which is in the area behind the radio.
@@edredas sorry I forgot to reply, you were correct, changed the fuse and it's working just fine!
Also, on my 86 924S the driver side switch and passenger side switch work, but the driver side switch which controls the passenger side doesn't work, do you have any suggestions?
@@adamcroft5943 if the passenger side switch is working but the drivers side doesn’t then the issue is with the passenger side switch
@@edredas okay, I'll trouble shoot and get back to you! You're advice is always appreciate :)
So none of mine are working. Bad switches or something else?
There is a single fuse and relay for both windows. Could be either of those.
Where is the relay? Trying to locate it. Easy to source a replacement?
@@ballvice7861 it's behind the radio in that area. Hard to describe since it's just a lone relay on the harness not affixed to anything usually. I hope that helps!
So in a scenario where the passenger side won’t roll down at all, neither switch operates it, what would be your first thought on the problem? Thanks
Kevin
I believe that if both switches are assembled incorrectly you can end up with this issue. It might be a long shot, but checking them would be easier than pulling the door panel and checking the voltage at the plug or testing the regulator. I hope that helps!
edredas thanks!
Great video, and information. Dude, might want to think about cutting and cleaning your fingernails.
My nails and hands are clean 90% of the time, but touching even little things like switches makes them dirty. I mean work on cars not try to look pretty. Thanks!
You fucking legend
those fingernails
Oh my word. I have been leaning over to open the passenger window for 13 years... no more!
Awesome! I hope you got it fixed!
