Porsche 944 / 951 Odometer Gear Replacement

  • This week I'm replacing the odometer gear in this 1986 Porsche 944 turbo. There seems to be a lot of confusion as to why these break but if you look at the thumbnail to this video you'll see that the top half of this gear fell off from just taking the speedometer out. Needless to say that there was nothing going to prevent the teeth shearing off when its softer than wax and has fused itself to the post it should spin on.
    While replacing them isn't the easiest job, it isn't too complicated...

    Thanks, this project was intimidating me, taking apart a bunch of fragile 37 year old plastic parts. But it was not as bad as I was expecting. I took the opportunity to test and clean the dash bulbs, they had a some dust and grime on them, and are brighter now. Would be a good opportunity to replace any burned out bulbs that you might have.

    From what I understand Porsche made that gear out of softer plastic to eliminate noise in the dash during operation .When the gear was new reset during operation was not a problem but as the gear degrades with time hitting the reset during vehicle movement could begin its destruction.Thanks for your video!

    Hey there love the videos, so i have a 86 944T that has been in my garage for years. I haven't started it in about two years maybe 3. Could you give me a run down of what I should replace before starting and driving. I'm talking about belts hoses and tensioners. I know I also need to go through the brakes as the pedal feels stiffer than usual..

    great video - thank you! is there any reason you wouldn't put a spot of grease on the posts before reinstalling the gears?

    • @edredas
      @edredas  3 роки тому +6

      Lithium grease can dry up over time and break the gears. Petroleum based grease and especially moly grease can weaken the gears. That said, plastic gears typically don’t need any lubricant, especially these since they move very slow. If you do want to lubricate then you’ll want a silicone grease but it isn’t necessary. I hope that helps!

    Hey Edredas, As a proud owner of a 1987 944 N/A I’m subscribed to your channel and NEVER miss a video, I KNOW I’ve asked you before, But CAN you take us THROUGH the steps on maintaining and servicing our CV axles??? I’m SURE that YOU are aware that the OFF THE SHELF replacements available at the chain stores are REALLY NOT up to the quality of the OEM joints unless they were destroyed... I’d LOVE to see YOUR approach to this vital service and often neglected maintenance until it’s no longer serviceable.....🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

    You don't need to remove the steering wheel. I would if I had an aftermarket one like in the vid, but if you have an airbag-equipped wheel, the cluster comes out just fine without removing it.

    Hey Brent, I have two '86 944 Turbos. I have already done the odometer gear on one of them thanks to your video. I am getting ready to do the odo gear on the other one too, now that I have the gear in-hand.
    I have a question for you since you know your way around these cars so well: My red 944 has cruise and my white one does not. If I wanted to move all of the cruise control parts from the red one to the white one, do you know if I would find all of the wiring for cc to exist on the white one (even though it did not have cc originally)? If so, is it just a matter of swapping the servo box (under the hood), the computer box (under the dash), and the controls from the steering column from one car to the other?
    Thanks!!!

    • @edredas
      @edredas  2 роки тому +2
