Great Job!! I am continuing to prepare to drop my engine from the car. I had to remove the Speedometer cable to clear the driver-side hub from the car. Your video saved me a ton of heartache trying to figure out how to get the speedometer cable removed from the hub.
You are my hero! I used this video to fix my speedometer and its cable and it worked!! On mine however nothing “popped right out”, I actually had to cut the cable to get the speedometer out and then use force to unscrew as it was still wax sealed from the factory...moreover, the speedometer stuck really tight in the cluster. Another remark: On my Euro Model there were many more ... cables and some sort of BOSCH thing in the way which is not on the car in this video ... so I kinda had to go around it and the procedure from going from inside to the engine bay was more tricky. So folks, it’s “alright” if it’s a little tougher on your 944 than it is in this video - still super accurate and very well described! Unfortunately I was lazy and didn’t check the light bulbs of the speedometer before putting it back together and they both must have broke 🤦🏼♂️ So I’ll repeat this procedure tomorrow, but should be much easier now that I’m an expert 😜
Okay, so your video kinda inspired me and kinda put me to shame for being lazy - so I went right ahead after commenting and changed those bulbs. ALL working now. Again a huge thank you from Germany!
Hmm, interesting. I have an early euro car here at the shop so I'm wondering what that 'Bosch' thing might be and if its on this car as well! Glad you got it sorted out though!
@@edredas part of the alarm or immobilizer (not the biggest part, that was under the driver seat) was back there to the right of the instruments on mine (US, though) big black plastic box that says "the UNEO box" by Techne Electronics LTD manufactured by Nutek Corp. Taiwan - with a big white 8-pin connector plug. It has an FCC sticker plus a RF code number on there so I guess it has the receiver for the remote for the alarm. As I never had the remote, I might be wrong, cause I never could test it.
My speedometer is not working but thanks to this video I can certainly see what is going on! My other issue is that my Tachometer is not working. How can I fix it?
Does the tach work if you tap on it? I've had to replace a few that just quit working before, so I would check the wiring and try swapping it out with a known good tach. There are a few parts breakers that you can get one cheap from, or maybe someone can let you borrow one! I hope that helps!
It can be done but I don't recommend it. It's extremely difficult to access the bulbs without getting everything out of the way and also very easy to break the hall sender on the back of the speedometer if you're not careful.
Great Video Thanks Could you have put a piece of string by the wheel and connected it then pulled that through and then use the string to pull it back Also that hub cove comes of easily
My speedo cable snapped close to thw wheel. Previous to this the speedometer was working normal with no needle bounce. Once I had the new cable installed, the speedometer works, but now the needle is bouncing ????
More than likely you received a Gemo cable. Those are hit or miss. We used to only install the Porsche cables which were three times as much but better quality. However they are no longer made. With that being said, make sure the cable isn’t bent in any harsh angles and that the two ends of the cables are greased. If that doesn’t improve the issue then the cable you received was defective or damaged during installation. I hope that helps!
Hey, man. My car's speedometer has similar bouncing to it, but it's kinda worse than how you showed in the video. I was doing this project and already bought a new cable until I noticed that the e-clip is completely missing from the wheel. With the e-clip missing, the cable is obviously able to freely move. Should I just get a new e-clip or is the cable most likely bad as well?
Speedo cable bit longer on the UK cars....lol, Haynes book says smear grease on end of speedo cable, so what's this RTV that you mention ,and use? Nice clear video, shows me how easy to change my broken stalk on my indicators now, so thanks mate!
Perhaps the earlier cars didn't have RTV sealant on the hub from the factory, so the Haynes manual might be saying to seal it up with grease. I have seen cars without it but assumed it was removed by the PO. That said, the grease method won't last long as long, so I guess that's why Porsche started using RTV, which I would recomend even if your car didn't have it originally! I hope that helps!
I love the Porsche emblem on the steering wheel. Is that aftermarket? Do you have a part number? Does the Speedo have two or three bulbs? Some of mine are burned out and now I know how get to them to replace. Thanks!
Yep, the badge isn't stock... or at least it isn't normally found on the steering wheel. Someone just stuck a hood badge on there. The badges are available new to glue onto your steering wheel for about $140. That said, the speedo on the early cars has three bulbs. There is a fourth hole on the back but it is often covered with a piece of black tape from the factory and there is no socket for it. I hope that helps!
So I think my speedometer needs a "tip". i bought a repair kit that has tip and a staking tool, and it just say to "hammer it on there". Do you have any idea about this? Thanks!
1985.5 and later cars don't have a cable. Instead they have a speed sender on the transmission that sends pulses to the speedometer. Its worth replacing the sender first to see if that fixes it since they are cheap second hand. However, I've found in most cases that the speedometer itself is the issue. I hope that helps!
It could either be the wiring or the guage itself. To check if its the wiring, see if there is a pulse signal going to the green wire at the gauge. If the signal is present then try swapping out the gauge. I hope that helps!
I have an 84 944, the speedo bounces for the first 20 mph but then stop bouncing after but it's off by 5 mph. So if it says I'm doing 60, I'm actually doing 65. Is that the cable or the gauge?
There's a couple of reasons the reason it bounces. One is that the grease where it connects to the gauge has dried out or when someone replaced it they didn't apply any. As for the speed being off, check your tires. The stock size is 215/55R15 and if you have a 50 series tire on there it will throw the speedometer off. I hope that helps!
@@edredas Just got home from vacation and I apparently have 215/60 R 15s on there. Have to replace all the tires anyway so now I can get the correct tires. But I heard Pirelli doesn't make those anymore, that true?
I'm having this perpetual argument about breaking trip-meters. I can push mine whenever and it has never broken, still many people stick to the (unproven) urban legend that it WILL BREAK if you push the reset button while driving. What are your thoughts on the matter, you've probably seen more than most. I know 35 year+ old Porsche plastic is brittle, but do you really see more broken trip-odometers on 924/944 than on any other Audi/Volkswagen or any car from that time for that matter ?
Yes, I see a lot of broken odometer gears. We actually just replaced two of them this week. This is a common issue on a lot of older cars, not just the 944. The problem is due to the gear deteriorating overtime, and has nothing to do with whether it is pushed when while motion. When these gears deteriorate they crumble into pieces that are more fragile than an eggshell. That said, I have been pushing mine while driving after every fill up for the past 20 years. I've never broken or stripped one in any of my cars and they're original. Thanks!
@@edredas THANK YOU ! That was almost word by word what I think I've found out about it. The fact that mine (from '83) is still good, and I never push it while standing still, made me call out a few commenters repeating bs they've read elsewhere. But many still don't believe it. Look at these guys, they call it a quirk unique to the 944(24) and we had a long argument about it. ua-cam.com/video/g6Qs60pC3K0/v-deo.html&lc=UgyhG3NmtTa_Owoiq5B4AaABAg.8vl6QRAsBiv99oypuHqYId edit: forget the link - the guy in the video is not my kind of guy and the comment it's a bit hard to find down on the page anyways, where some numbnut ask: Do they have a lot of strange quirks and features ? He's obviously on the wrong channel which someone are quick to point out, but then of course comes the die hard "fact" that if you press the reset while driving the trip-meter dies.. (like flat earth, if you repeat something enough times, no matter how absurd, that's all it takes to start a fucking religion)

Thanks for the info!! Love your channel!! I own a 83 944 Metallic Sienna Red. Do you know any good painters? It could use an overspray. And a few other things!!!!
Thanks! Where are you located? If you are willing to do the body work yourself then any body shop should be able to paint your car and do a good job. With the silver car I had to pretty much pull it apart, and honestly I usually go a lot further. I will often pull the doors and the glass but the owner didn't want that. Paying a shop to do all that and any body work could cost anywhere from $5k+. If you do the body work yourself and take it apart then you could probably get a nice paint job for about $1k. I personally would not trust a cheap paint shop to do any body work. They will just mask things off with tap then spray right over chips and leave huge scratches in the paint from improper prep. I hope that gives you some insight, and helps!
edredas I'm in Milwaukee WI. Thanks for the reply. It is hard to find reasonable painters nowadays. You seem very thorough that's why I like your channel! ! Thanks Sean

I might have just made the job look easy, but it is pretty involved. That said, the early 944 and 924S are a little easier to work on than most German cars but it still isn't a Chevy. Lots of people don't realize that working on these cars takes 5 times longer to repair.
Working with e-clips in dirt, you're a brave soul!
