    Sorry I’m advance, I’m not a truck driver, just a fan of the content, but what is a “glider” I here you and Tim refer to it often, but doesn’t seem to be a specific make or model

    • @danielseelye6005
      @danielseelye6005 Рік тому +24

      A glider is a newer tractor without a drivetrain (engine & transmission). Like a glider is a plane without an engine.
      According to DoT rules, tractors with engines _newer_ than 1999 have to meet modern emissions standards and are usually also pushed to use electronic logs. Steve is in the clear because "Orwell" is from 1984 and his 3406B Caterpillar engine is original to the tractor, thus he is exempt from those regulations. He can use paper logs (as "Orwell" is fully mechanical and doesn't have any engine management computers to connect an E-log to) and he only has to adhere to emissions and safety standards as they were back in 1984 (thus only having a lap belt instead of a three point belt like your car and modern tractors.)
      Because the rules are tied to the _engine's_ manufacturing date and not to the tractor itself, guys like Tim Gentry would get newer tractors with more modern amenities and put in older engines from pre-1999 so they could have the best of both worlds. However, the Powers That Be have now closed that loophole beginning this year and thus it's no longer viable to get around newer regulations. Steve's still in the clear because, as I said, his rig is complete and from 1984 so it doesn't apply to him. However, there is a push for trucks like "Orwell" to be phased out and make it so all commerical tractors have to meet current year standards and if it passes, "Orwell's" days hauling freight would be over.
      Hope this helps

      @fsctrucking  Рік тому +15

      If you have a Glider built prior to the limits put on them, you're still good. However one is very expensive now. Even used. They are the most valuable truck.
      Example of a glider wad my friends 2016 Peterbilt 389 built with a 1993 model year 60 Series Detroit. Was built that way new at Fitzgerald.

    • @danielseelye6005
      @danielseelye6005 Рік тому +3

      @@fsctrucking So if a glider built before this year lost an engine (say Tim's green Coronado with the warrantied Detroit) would this mean it was completely done for and need to have a newer engine installed, thus being held to current regs or could he put another pre-99 engine in and keep it in the exemption?

    • @fsctrucking
      @fsctrucking  Рік тому +10

      @Daniel Seelye The Coronado Tim has was built factory as a Glider. Thus it will always be a Glider.
      So originally when they started making Gliders, you ordered one. It was delivered to you as a brand new truck, with no engine. You had to put the engine in. But you had to turn in the old "donor" truck's VIN number. This way that older truck could never be used again. Every Glider has a dead old truck behind it. This way you had a new truck meeting the regs of the donor year. Not the new chassis year.
      After ELDs and DEF hit. Companies like Fitzgerald did all that for you. And they sold thousands of rigs. The government didn't like a big company getting around Govt. Thus gliders are very limited in number. And I believe PACCAR won't sell them at all.

    I retired in 2004 from OTR trucking, but I remember when there were no "cell" phones or GPS in trucks, and most drivers ran 2 log books, I still miss those trucks and sometimes I want to go back to OTR trucking but then after watching trucking videos and all the cowboy drivers out there I think I'll just be content with watching trucking videos such as this one. Thanks for the memories, be safe and keep 'er between the lines.

    i got out of trucking in 2016 i keep thinking how i miss the freedom and nobody watching over my shoulder, I don't know if because of you tube and social media and news but watching what goes on the roads today i think i will just stay away. I started in 2001 and that to me was the good days when i first started just like the generation before said 60's or 70's were the best years. I will say people that drive truck are under appreciated

      I was already 14 years in when you started, and yes, 2001 was still the good years. We were still under the 10 hour driving law of 1937, and hardly anyone was using paperless or computer logs.
      Now my smartphone is my logbook.
      It's really not as bad as I thought it would be, but I'm home everyday, so I can't speak for the OTR drivers.

      One of the things I remember were the breakaway fuel nozzles. Watched a driver one time pull off the fuel island with the fuel nozzles in both tanks. The pumps had clicked off and he just jumped in the drivers seat and put it in gear. Went 15 feet and realized his mistake.
      The pump handles still in the tanks, hoses on the ground. Fortunately the driver on the next island cut the pump before any massive amounts of fuel spilled.

    55 in Ohio brings back memories. Back when the limit was 55 for everyone, Ohio was notorious for stopping anyone over 55. At the time I was driving an F model Mack with a 15 speed tri-plex trans. I was stopped for speeding and had to park the truck and go with the trooper to the judge in town and pay my fine. This, of course, was before the internet. Another time I was stopped again but times had changed. The trooper carried a credit card machine so I could pay my fine right there on the spot. You know the machine. The one the card goes in and it makes a carbon copy for you. Boy, how times have changed since then. Great vids, Steve!

      John Glenn when he was a US Senator, was stopped by a Brooklyn Park local (I think). He tried to get the law changed, so a local jurisdiction had to have an on ramp and off ramp(2 exits).
      Ohio changed the law in one important way, if a local jurisdiction is getting more then 25% of a law enforcements department from traffic enforcement, the overage goes to the state of Ohio. Missouri did the same a few years later. It did wonders for speed trap towns.

    • @truthseeker2321
      @truthseeker2321 Рік тому +1

      @Ian Narita Indiana was the first to do this, because every town in Indiana was a notorious speed trap. All tickets written by the state police, go to the respective county they were written in, and county and town cops couldn't run traffic on the interstate or U.S. highways against commercial traffic, unless they seen them doing something stupid, and even then, they would simply hold them until DOT got there.

    Steve I want to thank you for the videos. They bring a lot of good memories. Me, I was closing in on 2 million miles, accident free. Got ill and could not drive anymore.
    I used to pull a reefer, as a company driver for a large company. The company had some hard times. In the time I was there two of the founders died. Then they took the company private, but the person who financed ended up in serious trouble with his company. His share of the company ended up being the largest asset he had and the company was up in the air for a while. The company survived, their new owners merged them with another holding and is doing much better.
    Me, I'm finished as a driver and prematurely retired. All I can do is watch from the sidelines.
    Hang in there you never know what life will deal you.
    All the best and Thank You again

    Great point you made about how it should NOT be legal for law enforcement activities / inspections etc. in a truck stop or rest area where truckers are off duty unless as you also mentioned it's some kind of criminal investigation. No one should be able to bother a trucker who's resting in his rig. It's your rolling home, your castle and you should NOT have to engage anyone that you don't want to.

    I love that old cabover Pete! I go back to 1974 when I drove a Freightliner cabover with a 4 x 4 transmission. With the doghouse so close to the seat there was not much room for those two sticks, but they had them set up with a very short throw. Then I drove lots of them with 13 speeds. My last cabover Freightliner had a 15 Speed up on the dog house. Petes had that too. It had a nice short sports car stick with a short throw. Loved that truck! These days I drive a Columbia double bunk with a Cat and a 13 speed. Been running long haul for 48 years, and I also have some videos of some of my trucks running in the States back to Canada. I only run one camera. I think you got about 3 or 4 cameras going there. Don't leave those GoPros out in the rain! Keep on trucking!

      It really sucked because number one, I was only 35 miles from home, and two, I had just gotten in that brand new truck the day before. It just couldn't have happened with the old 1987 cabover Freightliner I had just gotten out of.

I've had some taken out before on the gas side that even after watching the video I still couldn't believe what I saw. Had one where a guy took out three in one shot, drugs are bad kids. Had another in an ice storm took out fire hydrant, fuel price sign, two dispensers and some other misc stuff on the site. It happens all the time and every time we ask how. Just like when someone is on fire why do they ALWAYS pull into a gas station and up to a dispenser it is just beyond me.

    The crash at the fuel pump is a result of the industry being dumbed down. Companies are so desperate for drivers that they don't want to train them anymore. Put an auto shift in, and hit "D" and send 'em out to crash. Lots of these new drivers should not be driving big trucks. Real truckers know how to shift a real transmission, and since they took the time to learn that, they are much better drivers.
