Jaws the Revenge Clips - DVD vs BBC cut

  • Found an old, poorly recorded VHS of the (mildly) infamous BBC showing of JTR back in the late 90s / early 00s so have put the best bits side by side with the DVD. The 4:3 screening removed the widescreen matte bars so you could see large parts of the shark's machinery. Made an already enjoyably awful film, even more enjoyable.

    Why do I get the impression that the only person who gave a rap in making this movie was Michael Small, the guy who did the music for this one? Because that, and Michael Caine's 'Oh Shit!' are the only two good things in it!!

      The DVD is the theatrical version. You’d never see the tracks or mechanics on the big screen because of the black bars on the top and bottom. The TV versions remove the bars and crops the frame to fill the screen, thus you’re able to see the tracks and things making the shark move.

    This is more common than you think! A lot of films made around the 1980s and 1990s are released under so-called widescreen format....which means they actually crop off the top and bottom of the frame.

    • @PiperSparkles
      @PiperSparkles 4 роки тому +2

      Filming in Super 35 made it easier in the days of VHS to convert the film into full screen without losing vital info on the sides, as filmmakers got tired of seeing their scope widescreen films getting hacked into full screen for TV with the sides lopped off. What was shown on the top and bottom was often dead space and was never intended to be seen in theaters. Widescreen doesn't automatically mean getting the most picture information, but it is what you are intended to see. The video clearly demonstrates that more picture isn't always better.

      The goofiness just needs to be ramped up for it to be remade. Instead of Ellen being able to sense the shark, she should be able to talk to it as it discovers its fins can be used for flight and for dialing the phone to make threatening calls to the Brodys. The shark also needs to be slower and wobble more in the water. Then Michael Cain's Hogie can discover his inability to get wet after swimming allows him to electrify the water with his cavalier attitude. Then bring back the ghosts of the first three Great Whites by the Force so they can annoy Ellen by swimming in front of her face in the air while she tries to steer the boat. Seriously, this remake writes itself.

  • @Johnny6666
    @Johnny6666 8 років тому +11

    The same could probably apply to all the 'Jaws' movies. When lacking the correct aspect ratio, there's typically all manner of unintended things that can be seen by the viewer in the frame. Typically, correct ratio will eliminate boom microphones, etc. that are often captured in the image overall during shooting (with the assumption that they will be 'cropped' out later), but here it's Bruce's mechanics.
    Indeed, the formerly oddball compositional choices of some of the shark shots (i.e. 0:59 and 1:03) are now easy to understand!

    • @PatrickBurow
      @PatrickBurow 6 років тому +1

      The thing is Jaws had a lower budget so they had to work with less. They used cables and lines that they hid in the water or had divers to control the shark with above water shots. It was all in framing and shot composition, not editing or the aspect ratio because even the original BBC 4:3 aspect ratio of Jaws didn’t have any of this. Let alone Jaws the revenge having all of these issues with awful cinematography showing the parts of the Animatronic, awful editing and overall piss poor effort, the script and story is absurd and offensive to the once proud franchise

    I remember seeing a cut of JTR on BBC One on a Saturday night in the summer of 1995. It was on at around 6.30pm and was cut to hell. Practically all of the banana boat attack was excised (no shots of the woman in the shark's mouth at all) and most blood and "scary bits" trimmed down to almost nothing. The film ended up being, no joke, about 1 hour 15 mins long.

      30th Nov 1991 would have been the time when I recorded it off TV, and it was edited/butchered as it wasn't on particularly late at night. It was also the Jake dies version, which confused the hell out of me, as a 8 year old I could have sworn when I saw it on rental in 1989 that Jake lived (but I put that down to bad kid memory). The shots of the shark sinking into the deep with the girl were removed, and I didn't see those until I bought the 25th anniv VHS (which would have been 2000), which also handily proved my memory hadn't been playing tricks after all.
      I'm still convinced there was extra scenes/shots in the JAWS 3 I saw on TV in roughly 1991 than there is on the DVDs.

    • @bombstalker

      From what I understand, the original intended widescreen frame is captured on a piece of 35mm film which is more square in shape - they mask the parts above and below the widescreen image. But they only ever intended the widescreen parts to be seen. When it came to converting for 4:3 Television use, instead of doing traditional pan-and-scanning across the widescreen image, occasionally, and stupidly, they sometimes instead chose to unmask the parts above and below that were never intended to be seen. Used to happen quite a lot so TV versions would often feature boom mics / camera tracks... mechanical shark innards, which were never originally intended to be seen.

    I can't believe the people responsible didn't notice or care how the open matte revealed all the shark's mechanisms. No one seemed to give a fuck. Compare this with Spielberg and Joe Alves shooting insert shots on their own time and dollar just to make _Jaws_ a better movie. They lavished all their time and energy on it, even the small details.

Again, i can't wrap my head around why someone who make the decision to show a version of the film that is essentially not edited completely

      Watching Jaws 3 in 3D does make the movie a bit better. Not by much, but viewing the movie the way it was originally made, with better quality now on the blu ray, it is a tiny bit better. What’s funny about how bad Jaws The Revenge is, is that JTR scraps everything from Jaws 3 as if it never happened. That’s why Universal renamed this one to Jaws The Revenge, so people wouldn’t see it as Jaws 4. Universal calls this the definitive third entry in the Jaws trilogy.

    • @alasdairgardiner2313

      I personally find that Jaws, Jaws 2 and Jaws: The Revenge have at least some connection to each other, because of returning original cast members and the fact that Amity Island features in all three of them. Jaws 3D is the that makes no sense to me, because of that lack of connection.

The Shark is NOT Working !! it looks high and stoned ! and thentries to eat the boat with too much hot sauce , had a heart attack and died ! but its a better ending than the- "Cut n paste " job from The 1st one ! not the mention the Ridicous plot line ! Which was as bad as the camera work showing the CRANE ! ABOUT 3TIMES ! no wonder that director never worked again ! Michael Small did a great job to embelish the John Williams Theme . Made it even more scary i thought. One thing i never understood about this movie . Apparntly, they Found the Original Diagrams from the 1st movie on how to build the Shark , so how come the 1st one looked real and this one looked like a mechanailly led plastic maiko with, quite an obvious Crane keel ! ??

    I remember seeing a certain cut of this movie once that had extended scenes in it. There was an extended scene at the begining where Sean is driving up to the location to get on his police boat. There was more driving scenes of that. Plus, when the shark reveals itself to Michael for the first time and chomps on the boat hes on. After the shark goes back under water, there was an under water scene showing the shark leaving. Also there were more shocks that Michael gave the shark and that ending scene was extended also. There might be a few more extended shots that I can't remember. But I have yet to find that cut on youtube anywhere. I know I saw it.
