So I worked my butt of raising money for the smash 3ds. Before I bought it though, I emailed nintendo asking if a new handheld was coming out any soon. They said they weren't planning on it. So I used my hard earned money and bought my smash 3ds XL. 3 days later, they announce the new 3ds.........FRICKING THANKS NINTENDO.
i just got my first job, worked my ass off and bought a 3DS XL Zelda Edition with the hard earned cash I got from my first wage days before the New 3DSs were announced. No way in hell I'm getting this now. :'/

I got mine in late June, so for me the 3DS has lots of games I haven't played. So unless they make a new Metroid that requires a new one, it'll be hard it be temp me because the current back-log is great and I never had a DS or 3DS til this past June.

Sam Adams The DS lasted 8 years and periodically has fringe games released. It's only been 3/4 years since the 3DS' release. They'll stop supporting it once it becomes a liability to support and no longer economically viable. Nobody knows when this will happen.
The thing that astonishes me the most, is the beginning of the video its sooooo cool, and congrats to whoever does the work to do that, the sound effects are amazing as well

The upgrades to the New 3DS are interesting, but I cant help but wonder. How many times can they keep releasing handhelds and keep having your fan base pick it up? Each new wave of DSs are leaving a small group behind. Do this enough times and you wont have a market left.
Every change a company makes will always have pros and cons, and dont forget the newg group of people that buys it. You are just looking at the negative aspects.

Im mostly thinking of the mom's out there who are going to see the name "New 3DS" and think, "Is this really something new?" New adopters of handhelds are a small margin of total sales, so I am eager to analyze the numbers a year from now and see how this turns out for them.

The charging port is where the cartrigde slot used to be. Also, the inclusion of the ZR and ZL buttons likely forced Nintendo to change the placement of the cartridge slot.
I don't think it was useless. There have been times that I was playing a game and I was clicking the back buttons fast and ended up removing the cartridge :(. Lol I have a 3ds. Btw so I'm happy for the upgrade. I wish we had more color options though.
I find Nintendo be be scams at times. I mean...why not just make the new games at a framerate compatible with the old XL? And why so many new consoles? They've already discontinued wifi over the Wii (first) I'm tired of them disconinuing software, and forcing us into new products...Not all of us are made of money and can buy a fancy Wii U or New 3DS XL. I'm sorry, but why not allow us to trade in our old XL's for new ones? That would seem fair. Or just update the ones we have somehow. If you've had all 3 of the 3DS versions, you'd have probably spent a fortune by now. -.- We XL users had better be getting something out of this >.> like how you could get ambassador games with the first 3DS. Nintendo isn't the only company that does this. Thats how they make more money, releasing new products that people want to buy, thats how anyone makes money. Technology gets outdated fast, they as a company are almost forced to update because if they don't another company with a shiny new device will come out and take all their customers! Its not really unexpectantly they've been doing it for almost 20 years. Re-releasign new versions of the same handhelds..... I have an XL but i don't feel 'cheated out' or feel entitled to anything from nintendo. It was a choice to purchase my XL. They did not force it upon me or rip me off as it's been out for over TWO years now. The reason the original 3ds owners got the ambassador program was because they slashed the the price almost one hundred dollars cheaper only 6 months after they bought it! So they should get something! This new 3ds is not a brand new system, its just a possible upgrade. Its your decision to purchase it, or wait for the next iteration. Because they are never going to stop updating their handhelds.
Actually if you trade your 3ds at gamestop and say it is for the preorder for the new 3ds they will give you $100 store credit so basically it would be only $100
i think upgrading to a very slightly better system is a huge waste of money. if you're just now planning to get a nintendo handheld, wait for the new 3ds. if you already have a 3ds and aren't an oil baron, stick with it and spend your money more wisely.
***** i agree, i use my 3DS every single day, All these extra features make such a difference to me, especially the new 3d ( i love playing my games in 3d). Its just going to be a lot smoother to use which i think is worth the upgrade for someone who uses it all the time. if you have a 3ds and only play on it occasionally then i probably wouldn't upgrade, but if you've yet to get one, or are a heavy user, think its worth the upgrade.

Honestly you really don't need to upgrade. All the newest pokemon games play fine on the older models, and there are like 2 released games by nintendo exclusive to the newer model. I own the small new 3ds and honestly I'd be perfectly content with one of the older models, but I guess the newer ones do look a little better in my opinion.
Defiantly upgrading. Got an annoying scratch on my touch screen that came from playing ACNL, was looking at XL's due to the bigger size, can import from Australia due to PAL being AU and EU and all my games will work.
The SP101 is pretty good Got mine in a pawn shop with some games for 20€ I like the New3DS more It has internet (with flash) It has a glasses free 3D display You can download games from the Eshop And it's not a pain in the ass to find games
Yes I have used it until now 2016 and I'm buying a new 3ds xl not to replace it but so I can play never games. The GBA SP is the best for GBA games = love and my old donkey kong country and pokemon red and yellow won't say no to be played again :D

Better control and feel, easier to play games with the C-stick, slightly better button placement (although not too important) some power improvments, (not that important either) slightly longer battery, and there's exclusive games FOR the new nintendo 3ds, such as xenoblade chronicles 3D.
2:04 Bullshit. There's plenty of room of they kept the start and select button in the same place and would be completely symmetrical with the left side.
Maybe the faster processor will correct lag in 3D. Like for instance, 3ds pokemon battles. They get super laggy if that switch isn't off. Not to mention they actually disable it for double/swarm battles.

You should probably not, yet. The eye tracking 3d goes to hell if I put my glasses on, and even without them it still loses focus just enough to be annoying. It's an improvement but still can be a distraction to the point you end up turning it off. The UI speedup isn't worthy on its own, because for the most part you'll be playing a game or video and not meandering around the interface. It's welcome but not upgrade-worthy. When the new games make a standard of the nub and faster processor it will be worth getting. Just buy a plug. Nintendo are cool with selling a game system that isn't even functional out of the box. Edit#2: The 3d seems to have really stabilized. I don't know what was going on, but without glasses it's holding pretty well. I'm going to partially retract my opinion and state that if you like the 3ds that much and the 3d effect, I'd call the quality of life upgrade worth it.
I could see glasses affecting the infrared scanner tracking your eyes, but without them it has worked for me even on a bus as I was shaken around. Also if you're a monster hunter fan, the graphical update and new controls make this a decent purchase.
Ashleigh McCusker I have like 6 pair of glasses (hey, 39dollarglasses-dot-com is most of them) and I think you're on to something. Either the frames or maybe lense coating/glare seems to factor in. The tracking seems to not get equally affected by different pairs.
So, instead of waiting another 2 or 3 years to improve it to the point where it's worth buying, they've released it with basically a few new buttons which everyone's going to have to buy if they want new games. Guess that's their tactic for making up for low Wii U sales. Bullshit.

Also 3D youtube videos for those that are in 3D. -C-Stick. -Z1 and Z2 shoulder buttons. -Faster CPU. -Faster downloads. -Actually usable internet browser. -Actually usable miiverse. -MicroSD cards. - too much more.
Chris V 90+% of 3ds owners never use the browser, never upgrade the included sd card, never use the 3d function in a location they cant be still or outdoors, never purchase overpriced amiibos unless they also own a WiiU. CPU and buttons are all this offers, and unless you play MH or XC, its pointless atleast for the next couple years.
I have a NEW 3DS XL and a 3DS XL. I got the new one because my analog stick was giving out on my old 3DS XL, but I must say the New 3DS packs quite a punch, I just bought Xenoblade today, and it's no joke, it truly does use the hardware. Games load much faster, and so does the store, and many other things. If you currently own a 3DS it's not really a 'huge leap', but it certainly wouldn't hurt to upgrade if you can. The NEW 3DS can play regular Nintendo DS/DS I games (just like the regular 3DS). So you're getting quite a bit, just think, when new games start to be optimized for this system, you'll be able to play any DS-3DS/New 3DS games.
I think I will stick with my regular 3DS XL for now, none of the new games announced really appeal to me. Also there are some features of the "New" 3DS I'm not too keen on, like the placement of the stylus (having it at the side is so much more convenient), the fact the stylus is now shorter, the SD card being even more fiddly to take out, and a lack of improvement to screen resolution (would be nice to at least have anti-aliasing). I think I'll wait a few years for whatever comes _after_ the "New" 3DS.
Can anyone tell me more about the entire upgrade from the original 3ds to the new 3ds? Cause I read that you have to do this system transfer as well, does this include things such as save files as well?
Help me... So I have a N3DS XL for about a year I think, aaand I kinda like the new 3D tracking feature, the volume in the upper screen. But... I have to make these choices: A - Stay with the console; B - Sell it for 200€ and then buy a New N3DS XL for the exact same price. My dad says that the price for the normal XL has decreased, so he isn't going to put it up for sale. Probably.
Mrvideosandgames the updated processor and ram means that better looking less pixelated and more complex games can be made specifically for the new system

So I'm having a hard time choosing between the New 3DS XL and the PS Vita Slim.. I love the Mario, Zelda and Pokemon games that have been a huge hit on the Nintendo Consoles. But I also like shooter games like Borderlands, Call of duty, GTA.. So I guess my question is. Will the PS Vita perform like a PS4? Or will I be disappointed in the performance and feel of the analog stick? Wil I be happy with the new 3DS XL? Or will the games be a little more cartoonish? Thanks for your help!
I guess Nintendo made improvements where it counts, the extra shoulder buttons is a good idea but does this mean the older 3DS XL will be discontinued, since it doesn't have the added ram support? I've also read that this version has an amibo reader on the back. I hope this doesn't become a mandatory thing in all their games. :(
I don't think it's worth the upgrade unless your current 3DS system is damaged. My old 3DS had the cover for the Circle Pad torn off (because of Smash) and I couldn't push to the right very well. I could only push it about halfway to the right. And after the 3 years I've been using it, the battery only lasts for a mere 10 minutes after being fully charged AND I had the brightness at its lowest. I COULD replace the battery but I always wanted to upgrade to the regular 3DS XL but now that the New 3DS XL is out, I was able to get one and I am enjoying it immensely.

I feel like almost everyone who talks about the New 3DS neglects to mention the new wireless media transfer feature, especially regarding the tucked-away SD card. With wireless transfer you'll practically NEVER have to remove the card.
Yes, but you've always been able to do that. That's not what I'm talking about. The New 3DS has a new feature for wirelessly backing up your save data and media to a PC in some form or another.

Yep. The way I understand it, basically the only reason you'll ever have to remove the SD card is to copy data to a new card altogether. I certainly can't think of anything else.

I really really want to get the Nintendo 3ds XL NES edition (the one that has the NES controller on the surface) but there is also the New 3DS XL, which costs almost the same and it's basically an upgraded 3DS XL. Ugh, the problem I have is that I just got a normal XL in October for Smash, just because my older one's shoulder buttons had broken. I'm not sure if it's worth making another upgrade so soon.
I have almost no choice but to get it. 1. I need that C-Stick for Smash Bros. Now that i've played the console version again, I need a second stick for smash attacks. 2. I have a normal sized 3ds and want a bigger console. 3. I have a few games that are circle pad pro compatible and would love to take advantage of them.
I am definitely buying a new 3DS XL! Despite the flaws in the system like the unholy back panel for the mini sd card and other people at school telling me they rather keep the regular one and not waste $200, it's worth the sacrifices! That is why I am exited for it coming out on Friday.
I recently traded my new 3ds xl for a new 3ds. I find the xl version is very uncomfortable to hold and the bigger screen with the same resolution very bad. Also i dont like the glossy feel on it. Now im happy with the smaller version with matte finish.
+Totalytaco If you enjoy handheld games, then yes. If I may give you a recommendation, Xenoblade Chronicles 3d is a great game for the New 3ds XL. It will give you hours upon hours of gameplay.

I will buy the new XL, primarily because the shoulder buttons on my old 3DS are broken. I don't consider it an "upgrade" though, as I have no intention to sell my old one.
I'm buying the new 3DS XL when it comes out. Why? Because I don't have a 3DS yet and if I'm going to buy one, I want the best. Bravely Default was pretty much the title to make me decide to buy one. Between my Vita and the new 3DS, I should have a pretty good selection of JRPGs when on the go. I'm certainly not hurting for good games on my Vita though so I can wait until the new 3DS comes out, no problem.
I do NOT like where the game cartridge goes on the New 3DS. It's so out of place and I feel like it's much easier to accidentally eject it. In fact, just an hour ago I was playing a game and it randomly came up saying the cartridge was ejected, except, it wasn't ejected, at all. Whereas with the regular 3DS the cartridge is in the back and can't be touched at all when playing. Also, the stylus is inconvenient and the power button just makes it easier for accidentally turning it off. I got mine for the better 3D, but I was unaware of the layout. I also got a New3DS because my regular 3DS was starting to crack on the upper right hand side where it closes and shuts and opens. It finally broke off the other day. I got the New3DS almost 5 months ago just as a back up investment. I'm glad I made that investment, but not exactly happy with the layout of the console. However, my regular 3DS does still work and play games, but it can't shut now and I can't lay down and play it. It basically has to be put on a flat surface to play it on, which I'm usually never playing on a flat surface because it hurts my back. So yeah. Ohhwell. But that's my experience with them.
There's no point in upgrading if you own a 3DS XL as the upgrades are minor. However if you still have the original 3DS I would say upgrade to either the original 3DS XL or get a new 3DS/XL
I dislike the glossy finish and the new placement of the stylus. The XL had it on the side which is perfect. I DO like the face tracking 3D effect, the fact that start and select aren't so awkward anymore like they are on the XL. I've seriously hit the power button before thinking it was the start button.
I don't mind the circle pro (since just a few games uses it) the only attractive thing is the better 3ds effect (face traking) but I feel like they just made a gimmick of an upgrade ! and I read somewhere they will be coming with an other handheld console (or working on it), man ! money don't grow on trees !
of course they are working on the next handheld, hell they probably already finished that idea and are working on the next next one! That's how these companies work, they give you a slightly broken product, then re-release it with minor tweaks to fix some of the broken stuff, then release an even better version with close to nothing wrong with it and then they release a brand new thing. And it works. People throw their money at them. I give it two more years and then they're probably going to have another upgrade.
I will upgrade but I'm gonna wait till more exclusive games for the system are revealed. I've still got Xenoblade for the wii. That c stock will be so handy for Monster Hunter 4 though.

They should have increased the size of the new c-stick and kept the start and select where they were. Also, it is good if it is hard to press power, because you don't want to accidentally press it.
With my current 3ds most of my games have come from the e shop and are saved on a larger sd card that i installed. if I upgrade to the new 3ds and install my current sd card into that system will I loose all progress in my games?

The charging port is where the cartrigde slot used to be. Also, the inclusion of the ZR and ZL buttons likely forced Nintendo to change the placement of the cartridge slot.

I have an XL but i don't feel 'cheated out' or feel entitled to anything from nintendo. It was a choice to purchase my XL. They did not force it upon me or rip me off as it's been out for over TWO years now.
The reason the original 3ds owners got the ambassador program was because they slashed the the price almost one hundred dollars cheaper only 6 months after they bought it! So they should get something!
This new 3ds is not a brand new system, its just a possible upgrade. Its your decision to purchase it, or wait for the next iteration. Because they are never going to stop updating their handhelds.

Its just going to be a lot smoother to use which i think is worth the upgrade for someone who uses it all the time. if you have a 3ds and only play on it occasionally then i probably wouldn't upgrade, but if you've yet to get one, or are a heavy user, think its worth the upgrade.
Or just sell your 3ds xl for a to low price because noone wants it and buy the new one.

Honestly you really don't need to upgrade. All the newest pokemon games play fine on the older models, and there are like 2 released games by nintendo exclusive to the newer model. I own the small new 3ds and honestly I'd be perfectly content with one of the older models, but I guess the newer ones do look a little better in my opinion.

Defiantly upgrading. Got an annoying scratch on my touch screen that came from playing ACNL, was looking at XL's due to the bigger size, can import from Australia due to PAL being AU and EU and all my games will work.

Maybe the faster processor will correct lag in 3D. Like for instance, 3ds pokemon battles. They get super laggy if that switch isn't off. Not to mention they actually disable it for double/swarm battles.

The eye tracking 3d goes to hell if I put my glasses on, and even without them it still loses focus just enough to be annoying. It's an improvement but still can be a distraction to the point you end up turning it off.
The UI speedup isn't worthy on its own, because for the most part you'll be playing a game or video and not meandering around the interface. It's welcome but not upgrade-worthy.
When the new games make a standard of the nub and faster processor it will be worth getting. Just buy a plug. Nintendo are cool with selling a game system that isn't even functional out of the box.
Edit#2: The 3d seems to have really stabilized. I don't know what was going on, but without glasses it's holding pretty well. I'm going to partially retract my opinion and state that if you like the 3ds that much and the 3d effect, I'd call the quality of life upgrade worth it.
I could see glasses affecting the infrared scanner tracking your eyes, but without them it has worked for me even on a bus as I was shaken around. Also if you're a monster hunter fan, the graphical update and new controls make this a decent purchase.
Works fine for me, make sure you don't use it to far or to close to your face......

Ashleigh McCusker I have like 6 pair of glasses (hey, 39dollarglasses-dot-com is most of them) and I think you're on to something. Either the frames or maybe lense coating/glare seems to factor in. The tracking seems to not get equally affected by different pairs.

Chris V 90+% of 3ds owners never use the browser, never upgrade the included sd card, never use the 3d function in a location they cant be still or outdoors, never purchase overpriced amiibos unless they also own a WiiU.
CPU and buttons are all this offers, and unless you play MH or XC, its pointless atleast for the next couple years.
I have a NEW 3DS XL and a 3DS XL. I got the new one because my analog stick was giving out on my old 3DS XL, but I must say the New 3DS packs quite a punch, I just bought Xenoblade today, and it's no joke, it truly does use the hardware. Games load much faster, and so does the store, and many other things. If you currently own a 3DS it's not really a 'huge leap', but it certainly wouldn't hurt to upgrade if you can. The NEW 3DS can play regular Nintendo DS/DS I games (just like the regular 3DS). So you're getting quite a bit, just think, when new games start to be optimized for this system, you'll be able to play any DS-3DS/New 3DS games.
Seems like a massive waste of money just to shave off a few seconds of loading time.

I think I will stick with my regular 3DS XL for now, none of the new games announced really appeal to me. Also there are some features of the "New" 3DS I'm not too keen on, like the placement of the stylus (having it at the side is so much more convenient), the fact the stylus is now shorter, the SD card being even more fiddly to take out, and a lack of improvement to screen resolution (would be nice to at least have anti-aliasing). I think I'll wait a few years for whatever comes _after_ the "New" 3DS.

So I have a N3DS XL for about a year I think, aaand I kinda like the new 3D tracking feature, the volume in the upper screen. But... I have to make these choices:
A - Stay with the console;
B - Sell it for 200€ and then buy a New N3DS XL for the exact same price.
My dad says that the price for the normal XL has decreased, so he isn't going to put it up for sale.

So I'm having a hard time choosing between the New 3DS XL and the PS Vita Slim.. I love the Mario, Zelda and Pokemon games that have been a huge hit on the Nintendo Consoles.
But I also like shooter games like Borderlands, Call of duty, GTA..
So I guess my question is. Will the PS Vita perform like a PS4? Or will I be disappointed in the performance and feel of the analog stick?

I guess Nintendo made improvements where it counts, the extra shoulder buttons is a good idea but does this mean the older 3DS XL will be discontinued, since it doesn't have the added ram support? I've also read that this version has an amibo reader on the back. I hope this doesn't become a mandatory thing in all their games. :(
I don't think it's worth the upgrade unless your current 3DS system is damaged. My old 3DS had the cover for the Circle Pad torn off (because of Smash) and I couldn't push to the right very well. I could only push it about halfway to the right. And after the 3 years I've been using it, the battery only lasts for a mere 10 minutes after being fully charged AND I had the brightness at its lowest. I COULD replace the battery but I always wanted to upgrade to the regular 3DS XL but now that the New 3DS XL is out, I was able to get one and I am enjoying it immensely.

I feel like almost everyone who talks about the New 3DS neglects to mention the new wireless media transfer feature, especially regarding the tucked-away SD card. With wireless transfer you'll practically NEVER have to remove the card.

Yes, but you've always been able to do that. That's not what I'm talking about. The New 3DS has a new feature for wirelessly backing up your save data and media to a PC in some form or another.

Yep. The way I understand it, basically the only reason you'll ever have to remove the SD card is to copy data to a new card altogether. I certainly can't think of anything else.

Ugh, the problem I have is that I just got a normal XL in October for Smash, just because my older one's shoulder buttons had broken. I'm not sure if it's worth making another upgrade so soon.
I have almost no choice but to get it.
1. I need that C-Stick for Smash Bros. Now that i've played the console version again, I need a second stick for smash attacks.
2. I have a normal sized 3ds and want a bigger console.
3. I have a few games that are circle pad pro compatible and would love to take advantage of them.

I am definitely buying a new 3DS XL! Despite the flaws in the system like the unholy back panel for the mini sd card and other people at school telling me they rather keep the regular one and not waste $200, it's worth the sacrifices! That is why I am exited for it coming out on Friday.
I recently traded my new 3ds xl for a new 3ds. I find the xl version is very uncomfortable to hold and the bigger screen with the same resolution very bad. Also i dont like the glossy feel on it. Now im happy with the smaller version with matte finish.

I'm buying the new 3DS XL when it comes out. Why? Because I don't have a 3DS yet and if I'm going to buy one, I want the best. Bravely Default was pretty much the title to make me decide to buy one.
Between my Vita and the new 3DS, I should have a pretty good selection of JRPGs when on the go. I'm certainly not hurting for good games on my Vita though so I can wait until the new 3DS comes out, no problem.

I do NOT like where the game cartridge goes on the New 3DS. It's so out of place and I feel like it's much easier to accidentally eject it. In fact, just an hour ago I was playing a game and it randomly came up saying the cartridge was ejected, except, it wasn't ejected, at all. Whereas with the regular 3DS the cartridge is in the back and can't be touched at all when playing. Also, the stylus is inconvenient and the power button just makes it easier for accidentally turning it off. I got mine for the better 3D, but I was unaware of the layout. I also got a New3DS because my regular 3DS was starting to crack on the upper right hand side where it closes and shuts and opens. It finally broke off the other day. I got the New3DS almost 5 months ago just as a back up investment. I'm glad I made that investment, but not exactly happy with the layout of the console. However, my regular 3DS does still work and play games, but it can't shut now and I can't lay down and play it. It basically has to be put on a flat surface to play it on, which I'm usually never playing on a flat surface because it hurts my back. So yeah. Ohhwell. But that's my experience with them.

There's no point in upgrading if you own a 3DS XL as the upgrades are minor. However if you still have the original 3DS I would say upgrade to either the original 3DS XL or get a new 3DS/XL

I don't mind the circle pro (since just a few games uses it) the only attractive thing is the better 3ds effect (face traking) but I feel like they just made a gimmick of an upgrade ! and I read somewhere they will be coming with an other handheld console (or working on it), man ! money don't grow on trees !
of course they are working on the next handheld, hell they probably already finished that idea and are working on the next next one! That's how these companies work, they give you a slightly broken product, then re-release it with minor tweaks to fix some of the broken stuff, then release an even better version with close to nothing wrong with it and then they release a brand new thing. And it works. People throw their money at them. I give it two more years and then they're probably going to have another upgrade.
