Aqara Presence Sensor FP2, a new era of presence detection
Вставка

- This is the brand new Aqara Presence sensor FP2. I am excited to test it and let you know what it can do in combination with Home Assistant! The room can be divided into various zones so you can trigger different automations for each configured zone. So you can trigger automations if someone enters a zone, if someone is present in a zone for some time, if someone leaves a zone, if someone falls, etcetera. I think the fact that you can define zones opens a whole new world of automations for us.

Let me know what you think about this Aqara FP2 Multi-Zone Presence Sensor! I think it's awesome that it works so well in Home Assistant. What do you think?
Great sensor but still flawed, firware updates fixed the ghosting quite a bit but myself and others have issues where it looses track of people. So there can be 2 people in a room 1 leaves and it thinks you both left as it looses track of the other.
If I lie down on my sofa it can after a while think ive left so its not quite there right now but its a lot better than the FP1 I have never been able to get that thing to work well. The Fp2 I will definitely consider buying more.
You had me hooked in, until you said it's not Zigbee! I've been reducing the number of WiFi units I have due to congestion. Despite having a business grade router etc.
Great video, love the FP2, its a quantum leap from the FP1 which I think they pushed out prematurely to respond to the market and then did it right with the FP2.
still facing ghosting issue..... mine was working better before the last FW update... since then the old issues came back!!!! i have been using it for 3 months now!! very bad to have such an expensive device with this behavier
@@baaam684 Indeed!
Thank you again for helping me get my Aqara up and running :) You have been a requirement to get my smart home up and running!! Appreciate you
Thanks Ed. Just got one for my further descent into the rabbit hole! Lewis is also making firmware improvements to his presence sensor too.
One item to clarify, the fall detection feature is only available when you mount the sensor on the ceiling. This is not common for most other automatons and also powering it in the ceiling is challenging!!
Very thorough instructional! Just what I was looking for. I especially love the structure of your automation...learned some things I hadn't intended to!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you found the instructional thorough and that it provided you with some unexpected insights.
I have had one for a few months now and this is brilliant in my kitchen and under cupboard lights in different areas as well as separate dining area that can now be lit independantly.
I struggled for hours to get HA to show up the FP2 until I read this in your video. Timeline 5:01 the bottom paragraph. Thankyou you saved me many more hours of frustration in trying to get the FP2 to be detected in HA..
And don't remove device from Android app.
thanks for the tutorial and i tested the Aqara fp2 for the first time and so far it is good.
Thank for the great video, others have shown this FP2. I like that you show how to program with it.
Thanks! 🙏🏻
Thank You. i purchased mine couple days ago. just in time for your tutorial :)
I hope you enjoy it just as much as I do.
It's amazing. I use it in my home, i can create automation each zone. Very accurate, n it was work in home assistant via homekit control.❤
it has a falls positive issue, what's great about it, he thinks my ac is w pereon wnd and keep everything on
I was a litte sceptical (as mentioned in blogs), It's not Zigbee, the high price, you have to set it up with WIFI and app of aqara, connecting with Home Kit, firmware issues...ect.. But I bought it and managed to get it to function right, and it works great! This is really a game changer in home automation. Actually, you use this device a lot when you are at home and you have a big room (living + kitchen together).
--> Still the down sides need to be improved.
Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised as well!
Quite expensive tbh, and the only use cases i can really see are switching lights on and off, which is more a gimmick than super useful.
I'd love to find an actual use to justify this, but still. I just got a couple Tuya mmWave for £10-15 to play around. Not super accurate and without zones, but enough to satiate the geek.
Fantastic video! I learned a ton, thanks!
Wow, I must be doing something right if I managed to teach you a ton in just one video! Glad you enjoyed it and stay tuned for more mind-blowing knowledge bombs!
I was struggeling with my automation for this "walk through room, lights on, lights off". Since your video! Thanks a lot, you solved my problem, now it works!!!
That's awesome to hear! 👍🏻
This is so amazing. This is is how presence was supposed to work from the start!
I have a Tuya mmWave sensor but haven't tested it yet. Should work the same way, right? Just need to find the app to define the zones first...
Thanks for this great video!
Yes, I am enthusiastic about this one and I still use it in my living room every day. There are people that say that it's not working for them. I needed to tweak the settings for a while to get it to work perfectly.
Amazing work as always. You are very passionate about your work and it shows.
One aspect I did not understand: We do not use ANY apple devices in our household. Does this mean, that there will be no way for us to integrate this sensor?
I have never worked with homekit.
It can also be used in various ecosystems including HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Alice
@@SmartHomeJunkie but do it need homekit to use it in home assistant?
@@IoSonoAndreaZ No, you do not.
The need of an APP and using WiFi instead of zigbee or Z-Wave or 2 big NO NO's for me. I have really bad experiance with WiFi smart devices (Shelly) and to need install another APP annoys me to much. Ill stick with my Aeotec Multisensor :) Stil great video Ed and keep on going!
Hi, what issue do you have with Shelly through wifi ?
@@theattorney6072 High latency/responsive of the devices.
@@justsomeone2134 ok, thx. I have only one Shelly device (1 plus) and it is responsive. Maybe you have too Many ?
I find the idea of the sensor really neat. On the other hand, I don't like having to install an app for configuration. I find that this opens a door to data capture without my knowledge. While I am careful about the choice of my integration and sensors to guarantee a 100% local instance. does the app work even if you cut off its WAN access?
Does he have something new again! Haha great. BTW I'm working on the awtrix pixel clock. Very nice!!
It's a cool clock, isn't it? And I will release a new version of the Blueprints very soon.
Nice!!! Can't wait :D @@SmartHomeJunkie
thank you very much. A good video 🙂. FP2 is too expensive for me.
Thank you for the compliment. You can try the Everything Presence Lite instead. It's cheaper and has a lot of similar functionalities.
I ordered the Athom Human Presence Sensor@@SmartHomeJunkie
slightly confused. I have no apple device in my house. Will I be able to connect it via aqara app only? and If I want to intergrate it to home assistant i HAVE to use homekit? Basically forcing apple on us?
You only need the homekit integration in Home Assistant. I had some issues connecting it without my AppleTV, but it should be possible to connect it without apple devices.
Thanks!
Thank you for your support! 🙏🏻
Can you use the fall detection of the FP2 within Home Assistant
Dit was weer een waanzinnig goede tutorial ED @smarthomejunkie. Dank u. Scheelt weer een hoop aqara sensoren die ik op een andere plek kan gaan plaatsen.
Dank je wel!
I read it can detect posture checking. Is this already brought public or is it not released yet?
awesome and informative, thank you this helped me clean up my automation. What do you do to combat the ghosting that occurs with this sensor?
Stay do you mean with ghosting?
@@SmartHomeJunkie when you look at the aqara app and walk in a Ghost shows up as if there are two people in the room. Afte r you leave your dot leaves but the ghost stays for a while.
@@alexrobles7744 Ah, I noticed that in the beginning. I do not see this behavior anymore after updating the firmware and tinkering with the sensitivity for each area. I must say that I do not seem this ghosting behavior in the Home Assistant automations.
Good video. Aqara has good stuff but the price for this sensor is a bit much for me and the usage I'll have for it. Besides that, I also have cats and a dog so as long as there isn't an update, it's not for me. My cat already likes to sit in front of the staircase sensor some nights. That pest 🙂
I love the idea of the FP2. There have been a few milimeter wave devices around, but the zoning on the FP2 and speed seems really good.
I was going to get a few, but then I saw a video recently about RoomSense IQ, which has both PIR and mm wave detection in one, and that interests me . A bit torn which way to go now.
Hi, which way did you go ?
A very interesting device but I think it is currently too expensive to consider for multiple use in the home.
It's slightly overpriced by about $20, but considering one can control countless automations, it is worth the price.
I'm not sure what it cost at this time, but right now it's about $80 US on Amazon
@@Shadownailshot £83 /$101 in the UK just now
Does it work well if there is ceiling fan?
Friend, can you tell me please if fp2 works great with fans ? May tuya sensor has many false detections with fans😢
I've read about this on Home Assistant forum... people are having very mixed results and it's very common to have it malfunction when 1 person leaves the room.
I had this behavior before the latest firmware updates. That's why I waited with the review until these issues were solved. I do not experience this behavior at my side anymore.
How can I set the lamps that they do not turn off when no motion instead go back to the scene as was set before?
I have the FP2 set up in Aqara and in Google (been using it for almost a year). Looking to add this into home assistant, however when I open the device selector in Homkit Device, it doesnt show up. Any clue why its not appearing?
Good Video, but i can't force myself to buy a mmWave sensor for $83.00 USD when i can make one with a LD2410C and a D1 form factor ESP32 and a small project box that works with ESPHome for around $10.00 USD. I'll stick with my DIY one that does what i need it to. Sure it would be nice to have multi-zone and multi person detection but i don't need that kind of feature set. As long as it can turn off the lights when everyone leaves the room and not leave me hanging in a dark room when i don't move enough (like a PIR sensor can), I'm good with that. Plus with as many rooms as i have i couldn't afford to buy so many of the FP2's anyway.
Would putting a battery work? Has anyone tried that?
@@cgomfam The mmWave sensor has to put out a continuous mmWave all the time and that would drain a battery (even a larger one) very quickly. Most people think that it's the wifi that prevents these type of devices from working off of batteries. But there are ways to mitigate that, but the mmWave problem can't be gotten around as it has to constantly send out its wave
Can you also do directional detection, meaning: give out the direction of a movement? Of course you coul do that with lots of small zones everywhere, but that feels like a bit of a hassle...?!?
I don't think you can do this with this sensor. You can do this with the Everything Presence Lite though.
@@SmartHomeJunkie interesing and only a fracion of the price of the Aqara... how can that be? (well, if it *would* be available...)
I'll watch your video on this.
Thanks for the tipp!
And, oh: I envy you for the many great sorts of tacos & dips that you guys in the NL get at LIDL, here in germany they reduced down to only one sort of dip that I don't like 🙂
@@j.4941 Haha! 😋
Great video! Do you think it’s possible to have a single sensor in my hallway upstairs that could detect someone entering/leaving multiple rooms? Perhaps leaving/entering a single zone via multiple doorways?
Pfew, that's a good question. Maybe if you create very small zones in front of every door? Not sure if it will work, but in theory it should.
However, it would Switch on the light, but not Switch it off. Did you try that scenario ?
@@theattorney6072 No, I didn't
I don't have any Apple devices I'm only using android. So for me there is no way to disconnect the sensor from the Apple app. For people in my situation what are our options? Thank you
I have trouble understanding the room builder. Is every square 1x1 meter? If not, how can the program know how big the room is? Thanks
You can auto measure the room when setting up the edges. You have to walk around the room during setup so that it knows where the walls are.
Does this device constantly ping a server or anything? Thought I saw someone say it was always pinging Chinese sever even when using local
It took a few tries of adding / removing the device for it to finally get discovered by Home Assistant. However, when I click on Configure it gets stuck on:
> Please wait, starting configuration wizard for the integration.
One time it actually timed out with:
> Config flow could not be loaded: Unknown error
Any suggestions on how to proceed?
Thanks for your unbiassed comment on this device. Since this sensor is radar, not PIR, can you hide it behind something like a curtain and it still work?
That's a good question. I didn't try that yet , but will definately try this somewhere this week.
@@SmartHomeJunkieHi, did you try it behind a curtain or something ?
@@theattorney6072 No, I did not.
I have just sent my FP2 back. It keeps ghosting and not showing empty when no one is in there. Updates didn't fix it so gave up on it. Going to try the EP1 instead.
That’s unfortunate.
@@SmartHomeJunkie Yeh I had such high hopes for it but it just wasn't quite good enough. I love the zone feature of it but the reliability let it down. Just going to go for simple presence detection with the FP1 or EP1 as they seem to be more reliable at just that.
@@AlexBoltonKing I also have the EP1 and it works really good!
Same. I have three. All garbage. I live in a haunted house apparently.
@@SmartHomeJunkie would you recommend EP1 or FP1?

You say you need Apple Tv 4k to be connected. I don’t have an Apple TV 4k so what do I do?
Then you say the Aqara app forces the device to be added to Homekit. I do no have Homekit and Aqara didn’t force the device to be added to Homekit. Do I need to do something else?
Then you jump to removing the device from Apple Home App. I don’t have that software either, should I do something else?
I go to (HA) Add Integration and I do not see any Aqara device, just an IndoorCam Pan. I tried adding that and just get a spinning blue circle. Am I suppose to be doing something else??
Can you assist?
Roy
Looks great but I'll wait a while: Amazon Canada: $110 CDN, Aliexpress: $135 CDN. Too steep of a price for now
Yikes. At that price a regular motion sensor might be more my thing for now.
hello, my friend, I read that aqara radar generally sees ghostly people, even if there is only one person in the room, it says that up to 4 and 5 people are formed within hours. Do you have any experience with this?
I didn’t experience this anymore after some firmware updates. I think it might also be because of how you set up the sensitivity for each zone.
I just purchased this FP2 sensor and managed to set it up correctly in the Aqara app. HOWEVER, when adding it to Google Home, I can only use it as a motion sensor, in a very weird way:
When entering a zone, it triggers both device.state.MotionDetection motionDetectionEventInProgress true and false, and when exiting a zone, it triggers device.state.MotionDetection motionDetectionEventInProgress false. Is there any way I can use this sensor in Google Home as a presence sensor and not just as a broken PIR motion sensor?
(device.state.OccupancySensing is not showing up for a zone, only device.state.MotionDetection)
which aqara hub did you use?
None
my home is equipped with alexa and google devices. i got this sensor and I want to add it to home assistant but what if i dont use homekit. and apple, is there a possibility that I can add the fp2?
Yes. Home assistant can do homekit over WiFi on its own, by basically pretending to be a homekit controller
Thx. So basically you don't need Aqara hub ?
You don't need the Hub indeed.
But do you need an apple device for first connection to HA ?
@@theattorney6072 It can also be used in various ecosystems including HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Alice
What about health?
I dont't get this detail, do I need homekit? I don't have any apple device in my home and don't know anything about homekit
No, you don't. You can use the Homekit integration in Home Assistant without actually having to use Homekit.
I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong but mine will sometime stop detecting me if I sit in front of the TV and don’t move.
You might want to change the sensitivity for the zone or maybe the edges of your room are defined wrong.
I don't have any CrApple devices at all... Is that really a requirement???
No, see the other possibilities like Google Home which I mention in the video.
I don't have Apple products either. The device is detected just fine in Home Assistant using the Homekit integration. No need for Apple devices
@@Shaq2k That’s a valuable remark. Thank you!
I have the acara into Hub installed. Are you stating I should disconnect the sensor from the hub for it to be recognized and home assistant?
@@Shaq2k Is there a trick to getting the device to show up? Mine is not showing up in Home Assistant.
Can it detect through walls?
No
Опаздываете с обзорами . В сети уже миллион видео про этот девайся . И о ее огромной задержке в обнаружении человека и о цене
I waited with the review until the issues were solved which is now done. 🤷🏼
bring on pet detection!....dont want my cats setting off the alarm!
Still no pet detection for the fp2 ?
Sounds like a great device but I wished you hadn't waited until halfway through the video to mention that it needs HomeKit in order to be integrated into HA. I don't use any Apple devices and I don't want to add HomeKit to my home automation stack just for a sensor.
You don't need Homekit itself, just the Homekit integration.
5x too expensive
too expensive
Not battery powered, ok bye....
No mmWave device will be battery powered, they are constantly on and sending out the radar waves.
Indeed. Battery life would be very poor using a sensor like this.
For toilets you better use a simple door/window (magnetic) sensor. It's just about 15 euro's. Motion sensors are kinda silly for a toilet.
Well, not if you have kids in your house who leave the door open every time. 🙄
i have to leave my toilet door open for my cat 😹
