now, Ricky's tv yellow is a must!
Hell yeah
Yes!
It’s funny you say that because I’ve been seriously considering getting one.
They nailed the colors on these. Metallic red or anodized red, is my absolute favorite color.
I found it's got a decent metallic-ness to it if you're shining a bright light at it. Otherwise it looks like a pretty deep red, which honestly I think looks really cool with the black knobs and pickups.
That finish will diminish quick.
@@SHENDOHand? If you buy a Gibson you’re buying it for the way it ages..... if you want a “gibson” that doesn’t age? Go epiphone.
@@dylanzrim3635 mmmmmkay🙄
Good thorough review, thanks! Great that you started with clean tones to demo. Clean tones are the foundation of everything else. I like that the red finish seems to show the wood grain more than the blue.
Another vote for an Inverness Green Beato Signature! Red looks good but I prefer the blue so far.
Same here and tv yellow over red
I agree, however it needs to be a gloss finish for the Inverness Green. I have the Kirk Douglas SG Custom and a SG Special, both in the Inverness Green. Anything short of a gloss finish, just won't do it justice.
@@dlflash56 the new Gibson Les Paul Modern Lite has a satin Inverness Green version so it's important you've clarified.
@@jimmyjames2022 If they come out with a gloss Inverness Green, I'll probably buy one. Short of that happening, I already have two LP DC Specials in my collection, a 2003 in Faded Cherry and an all original 1959 in Gloss Cherry.
My custom one of these would have some sort of crazy headstock (V or that cobra one from that one carved top Les Paul DC), firebird pickups and maybe an adjustable wrap tail to be slightly more traditional to a Special, but not so far as the lighting bar. And Inverness green, can’t remember the last time Gibson used that color on one of these.
You play this guitar much better than LPs
Good clean and distorted tones from this puppy. I love the color too.
I’m loving the open grain!
Kim Thayil (Soundgarden) finally got a signature guitar from Guild, it’s a black and gold Polara and he’s most famous for playing those guitars, especially the white one too.
It’s about time.
@@ddbrock9675 “Oh it’s TRUE, it’s DAMN true.” -Kurt Angle
Wow cool to know thanks!
I love to see that the wood grain shows more on the red finish.
I bet the yellow one will be next year release
I really love Rick's attitude and what he has done for music in general and UA-cam. Man he hit a sweet spot that not many knew were there...god bless him. Really cool that he and Marty got their own signature models. I'll bet they are just speechless!! That is something most 'amatuer' (or even pro!) don't even dream of!
And Ric's contribution to guitar playing is what exactly?
@@PetraKann his conribution to music and learning, even an insider's perspective to the 'business' exceeds any level of skill or fame any one guitarist has ever achieved.
@@joblo2671 I think even Ric would disagree with you on that outrageous claim Mr Joblob3762
I ask again, what exactly is Ric's main contribution to guitar playing? I can list quite a few for Beck, Page, Hendrix, McLaughlin, Guy, Clapton, Vai, Santana, Benson, Dimeola, Schofield, Van Hallen, BB King, SRV, Gilmour, May, Iommi, Satriani, Knopfler, Emmanuel, Berry, Blackmore, Johnson etc....
I am all ears mate.....nothing personal against Ric - I listen to his channel regularly.
I was just flabbergasted and perplexed that Gibson decided to release a model with his name on it.
@@PetraKann idk man...ive played myself 30+ yrs and like all those guys...all im saying is when i found ricks channel...i knew this guy was actually a professional and knew what he was talking about (obviously!) ..but also that he was a serious musician and LOVES music...thats probably what grabs most people...that childlike quality he still has for listening to, discovering, and playing great music. That thing many of us seem to lose along the way somewhere...and it becomes about this or that. Im just thrilled because im sure he was just floored. Im also happy to see some recognition of these changes by Gibson and the industry. If you dont like it then dont buy one.
I mean... he is a well known producer, many of the artists you’ve mentioned he’s known since he was a child, before him his dad produced music.
His family gets VIP treatment at many music and instrument shops around the world simply based on their contributions.
As for “rick not agreeing”?
Look at deep purple... Richie Blackmore claims they achieved nothing... yet without them most of the music today wouldn’t exist.
Shoutout to Beato: Back at the end of the nineties, my entire office in Midtown used to rock out to the promo disc.
I would love to see this in an Epiphone release
When I started playing guitar it felt like few people rated P90 pickups and everything was more focused on either Humbuckers or Strat single coils (with things like Gretsch Filter-Trons and Burns Trisonics as outlier oddity pickups). I find it both cool and a little strange that that P90s are more popular again. It's as though there was a period when folks didn't trust the tones that they heard or the P90 was seen as 'old tech' that had become obsolete. This double cut sounds great.
Well said! I remember back in the late 90s seeing a beautiful Gibson SG Standard (heritage cherry finish) but it had P-90s. I remember thinking oh that would be nice to have but it has "those" pickups lol!
Agreed though P-90s are great pickups, it took me 20 odd years to get a guitar with P-90s but I finally got one and really love it.
perhaps. or nothing like your reality.
these pickups are susceptible to noise, being the hottest single coils available
50s and 60s - not much noise interference. people didnt own much electronics.
80s and 90s - forget about it, every switch mode psu and tv screen spewed out AM noise. even cars were a problem pre EFI.
fast forward to now, electronics are designed to limit alien frequencies, no analog sources remain and digital electronics are all in gigahertz territory. even led lights have improved in the last 15 years
so, if you were to say 'no one is dying of those common simple diseases anymore, I dont know what they were all worried about!' I'd say you live in a dream world.
I'd ROCK the red over the blue. Love the P90 sound here!...Great vid , Austin. Thank you for the review!
I purchased one direct from Gibson in sparkling burgundy and really like the guitar. As an aging player the weight and thin body makes is much easier to play than my LP Standard. Glad to see the guitar reviewed and torn down, I feel I got a good example with no visual defects I could find so far. I see the blue version is still selling for a premium on Reverb. Yeah, it a bit pricy for a pretty basic guitar even at $2K but a welcome addition to my collection and I enjoy the guitar and play it daily. I follow Rick's channel as I do yours. I like the fact he is donating his cut to Save the Music is a plus. Thanks for the video. I watch you channel daily to see what you have found to show off and explore its part and spec's.
I keep thinking I want one of these ... but I think I'm going to end up going with the Jim Adkins Telecaster thinline instead. These would be more tempting if they were a little cheaper (yeah, I get it, the charity angle kinda offsets the expense).
My Les Paul Standard 60's is a D shaped neck profile despite what Gibson says. You can almost see the flatness running up the back of the neck. I picked it specifically for that since it has proud shoulders which makes it feel like a 50's profile despite it only being 0.82" at the first fret and 0.92" at the 12th.
Yeah, they’re making them thinner now. My 2019 60’s Std when they first launched is a straight up C profile, .82” to .95”. My 2022 60’s is just like yours. I’ve heard the 50’s Standards also got a little thinner from the first runs too.
@@primeDecomposition My 50's Standard is 0.85" at the first and 0.97" at the twelfth and feels nearly the same. The shoulders on both are the same so I don't feel the actual back profile at all.
@@Catdad76801 Wouldn't doubt it. The one 70's LP Black Beauty I owned years back was a D regardless of Gibsons specs.
@@vladimirpoutine7522 Except for some stretchy 3-note-per-string runs, my thumb is mostly resting over the top so I greatly prefer C shape necks, not super thick necks though, as I play with the guitar slung fairly low.
I have a Les Paul dc faded from a few years back 2012 I thinkit was£449 new in the Uk they are virtually identical to the Rick Beato except it has no binding and a single ply pick guard, they can be found £700-900 easily it seems a huge increase for binding and pickguard
your chops are getting better i remember when i first started watching you, sometimes id be yelling at the computer cause you were wrong about things but man you have become so knowledgeable in the years and your chops have got alot better. congrats all the way around
This looks cool with the black plastics, I wouldn’t change that.
But a fan of tophats, so I would put black speed knobs on it
I love how the blue Beato guitar looks it’s a really sharp looking guitar. I loved that he picked a Gibson guitar with a set neck and the pick up selector switch is next to the pots not up top where les Pauls always are I hate the location of the les paul switch it’s the worst spot they ever could pick. It’s too bad they didn’t make enough of his guitars and re-sellers had to ruin it for everyone it was a decent price.
All Les Paul double cuts have the pup selector like this. Its the one thing I don't like about SGs and double cuts. I want my kill switch up top.
Nice demo, guitar sounds great. I like the blue better.
I love the Blue Mist color , the red reminds me of X-mass wrapping paper ( in a good way ! ), damn she sounds goooood ! I want to thank you Trogly ( Austin ) for inspiring me to purchase a Les Paul , I picked it up today , its an Ebony Les Paul Standard , man its beautiful ! Thanks Again !
First Les Paul? Welcome to the ultimate Paul bearer group!
@@john564holloway I am a long time Strat/Tele player and picked a used Les Paul and gotta say I love it. Love these videos and watch everyday. Crazy how these Beato guitars are selling for crazy money on Reverb,
@jimferry4751 Congrats again on your Les Paul, amigo...Even though I'm not a big, satin finish fan, I love this red Beato, way more than the blue. Never been a pehlam blue fan. Actually, I'm not surprised that these sold well. Rick has over 3 mill followers and they'll spend the money, especially knowing the money's going for a great cause. Rick's not making any money off this, either. If I had the money, I'd pay a little more for a great cause. Thanks for sharing, Jim!...Oh btw, I have 2 strats, a John5 Squire gold tele and a 2018 LP Classic Gold top with P90s! I love 'em!
If I needed new, I’d consider one (although a tv yellow single cut special is a bit less). Used, I’d grab a mid 2000s double cut faded. You can get those used for less than half what these list at…only difference is no binding on the neck.
All I want for 2024 is double cut Les Paul Juniors and Specials in the Original series!
This gtr has a wonderfull clean tone. Nice!!!
Very Nice Demo!
Thanks, cool guitar.
I'd love to have one, but I already have a Special (TV Yellow of course!), and a Special DC Tribute with that same satin finish. BTW, I took some metal polish to mine. Came out great. It now has a shine, but it's not a gloss, so it looks very aged and besides, it still has that open-pore nitro finished mahogany thing going on. The difference in sustain between the little DC Tribute and the regular Special is amazing. I suspect the top of the line goldtop with maple cap, sustains even a bit more. Heck, I love 'em all!
Stunning guitar
With the lightweight and slim taper neck I want one. Great video. Unfortunately quality control is still lacking at Gibson. When your paying Gibson bucks all of the details should be perfect.🎸👍🎸
made august 4 and reviewed september 5. you ARE the cutting edge, trogly!!
i think a nice silver metallic pickguard would look pretty slick on these.
I heard the blue ones had finish issues, stuff flaking off. That would explain a thicker finish
Damn that sounds good. You are killing me today, Trogly. GASing hard.
Trogly, would be really curious how well this stacks up to the DC Special Tribute that came out 2019/2020….. which is the better player and tone wise, which was better? Hopefully they keep it going, where’s the TV yellow?
The main thing with this model is that it's a bit thinner than normal specials.
If I remember correctly I think Rick said the body on the new one is slightly thinner than the blue one. More closer to an SG
Hi trogly, i dont know if you are into Guilds but they launched a Kim thayil ( from soundgarden ) signature model Yesterday, it's a polara s - 100 of course. I would enjoy seeing you reviewing this guitar, i think that it would make a great video.
Polara's are cool, underrated guitars. I'd like to see him do a review of one those as well 👍
I have a 2005 DC worn yellow for 750 euro. In fact the same guitar. Fantastic guitar.
Love the red one
Awesome! My preference would be the pelham blue but that red certainly looks awesome so, I'd take both, if I could afford it.
Neck P90's are the boss. My LP special neck pickup sounds glorious, and that's even with me playing.
Gorgeous
sounded great
A double cut Special is gonne be cool no matter who's name is on it! Having said that, I do like Rick's content - he comes a cross as a good guy.
An Epiphone version would be cool
I prefer this red one over the blue one!
Well if you had looked Gibson and Rick already posted a video on this guitar on the Gibson channel on youtube i watched it last night. i like this color much better than the blue for sure. blue reminds me a fender surfer guitars!!. nice guitar, priced fairly id much rather have this guitar than the tv yellow les paul special i have for sure, ill probably sell my yellow and get one of these if i can find one not over priced. 1900 is fair anymore ill pass. thanks for the video. Larry
I don't really care for Marty, but I like Rick. This guy refused to take a model for years until he donated his proceeds to charity which shows you the person he is
These guitars are killer! Worth every penny!!
I’m really feeling the tones on this! The middle position distorted is killer!
I like this color much better
I’ve been waiting two weeks for mine… only one more!
It's exactly the kind of guitar I've said Gibson should be making. (Except the finish...) A reasonably priced, fairly basic guitar aimed directly at the regular joe who plays. Nothing to throw you off. Not overpriced. Personally I prefer traditional full gloss finishes but this is fine, too.
I prefer the full gloss, too. The satin finish just doesn't seem clean after a good wipe down.
$2k for a thin satin finish LP Special is overpriced, in my book.
@@danlohrfink9272 Agreed, but usually things for a 'good cause' cost more than the average.
What is that big black line at 3:51?
If they do a third run I hope it's in a really nice rich gold. That would be nice.
Gold would be a good one!
Can you get this basic model (not necessarily Beato) with full size humbuckers? Could be the perfect guitar for me.
If rick does another one new year I think it'll be Yellow. IIRC I've seen him with a yellow DC.
If they made an epiphone of this I’d buy it in 2 seconds
So is it a 1/4 inch thinner than a regular double cut Les Paul Junior, as I thought I heard Rick say?
my Billie Joe Armstrong DC Junior is 1.72" thick so yes - but I'm pretty sure the old faded DCs were the same 1.5" too
I tried to get one when I got the email from Gibson, but I was too late.
idk what it is im just not big on double cut les pauls... i love double cutaway guitars Sgs,Strats,Kramers etc but these and same with the one i cant remember the name it starts with a M from i believe norlin era? trogly has reviewed them before lol
I like it in red, a green would be nice
Omg I didn’t see that corvette guitar. I have to find that video.
Is there a model with mini-humbucker pickups?
The Les Paul modern is so good.
Like the design, even though I am not a Gibson guitar lover.
Although what exactly is Ric's contribution to guitar playing?
What is yours?
The Red or Blue pill Neo, your choice. 😁
I love your show do more fender and other brands !!
Got cool ESP Custom Shop review in the works!
What do you mean by environmental impact from the pickup covers?
The plastic film they’d use to cover the pickups for shipping. It will be instantly discarded and end up in landfill, so between that and the environmental impact of making the plastic film to begin with - knowing the pickup covers are going to get scratched by picks right away - makes it not worth the trade off.
who up watching trogly at 2:48 am?
How does it intonate? My blue one had the bridge a full quarter inch too close to the pickups so it couldn't intonate properly. Had to ship it back to Gibson for them to reinstall the bridge. Fortunately they did so for free and you can't see any evidence of it.
I will never understand why the special double cut is not a part of standard USA production...
Piggybacking signature guitars, when will we see a John 5 signature G.E. Smith Telecaster or a Trogly Signature Buckethead Les Paul the trinity piggyback?
Isn't it actually a lp special double cut
The thing I don't like about these models is where they put the selector switch. What's up with that? I'd be hitting it all day long!
It's below the bridge, so I haven't found myself hitting it. Maybe if you were picking VERY close to the bridge it might get in the way. I find it easy (but not too easy) to change pickups with my pinky.
@@mikeomatic9905more like hitting it by accident when reaching for the volume, thats why I dont like SGs
Was there some Alan Paraons in there?
It would be sweet to have epi version
I would totally go for that...in Red ,burgundy
Or whatever the hell the color is...lol
Howdy everyone!!
I’m coming back to this after a year. I have to say I think it’s cool that The Rick Beato signatures are actually some of the most affordable options that Gibson offers for a tasteful DC. Can you find a DC Special with a thin satin finish (not the glossy versions with big pickguards yuck!) that are priced under 2K? Nope. Only if you get lucky 2nd hand or through a demo shop fluke. If there was a Black Rick Beato with that thin finish for $1900 in the Nashville Garage, it would be on my wish list for certain. I wish there was a standard DC with a not glossy finish priced like the Specials .. but surprisingly the RB signature is the closest thing price wise.
There are plenty of DC Special Tributes out there. Lots of people got them for $699. Prices are on the rise. I squeaked-in on mine at $800 with an upgraded bridge. I think they've created $1000 now, but maybe ebay or Craigslist would have one priced by someone who's not aware of the rising values.
I’d like to buy one.
satin TV Yellow 🙏
How about doing an episode on the new Guild Kim Thayil Polara for a nice change?
Yes!!
Have you tried a Heritage Guitar?
Beautiful instrument s
What is your number 1 guitar i cant find it on your channel.
The finish on the guitar reminds me of the cherry tree in the garden. Not the colour, the bark.
Green +1
the next color will be a metallic yellow. calling it now
👍
Not that I could ever be Rick Beato. However, if I were in his position and having a guitar built for me by Gibson, it would not have fit the exact specifications of a double cut LP Special. I love the pickups, but I would have wanted there to be a third one in place of the pickguard and phase cancellationpull pots. I also might have wanted a small amount of chambering. On the other hand, those are specifications that I have been daydreaming about since before the pandemic lockdown ignited.
No chambering a LP Special. They chamber the regular LPs before they glue the maple cap on. There’s no cap on a Special.
I want a sunburst one
8:05 - 🫣 OMG!
I like the blue one better.
Too bad they’re not making enough of these to keep them in the stable of regular production!
No shielding on this model?
Isn't there a fairly obvious film on top of the pickups? Just needed to remove it?
I don't think so. Mine doesn't have any film over the pickup covers. That being said, mine also weren't all scratched up either.
@@mikeomatic9905looked like it in the video but i don't own one so completely believe you.
It's a nice guitar, I would want to misplace the Rick Beato truss cover and strip off the paint and do a classic TV yellow finish with the brown grain filler and spray it with amber nitro with a light relic.
And kill the value of it. But hey, your guitar, your call.
@@stratolestele7611 I just think that red and especially the blue with the matt finish where it shows the unfilled grain doesn't look very good. I wouldn't really buy a more expensive signature version that I think looks less attractive than a classic finish.
I still don't really know who this guy is but I still really want one of these. Red is real nice but the blue is what's up.
He's a producer and does youtube vids from his studio. He gets some big name guests sometimes. Most of the time he's doing deep dives into the production and music of classic songs.
A recap is O.K. but at this point I think a nightcap would be better. 🍸
