By the time the Chinese march in to take what's left of this country, we won't have a single car still running. Even the parts being installed on the assembly line are this bad, no: worse. Honestly, we deserve this for giving away our industrial capacity and becoming so "Walmartized" we begged for this and here it is. I get that this didn't happen in China, but overall the parts problems are an epidemic and we have lowered our standards even here to the point that we are as bad as they are. We may never be able to make stuff here again if we don't reverse our culture. People just don't care about the quality of their work anymore, and as they get used to "comebacks" and "re-do's", they become callous and consider this stuff normal. They just consider these issues part of life and with that attitude and the really horrible stuff coming in offshore, if things don't change we are slowly going back to the stone age. We can't be a successful country if we don't bother to try. Everyone has to try their best every day. That's the bottom line.

The stuff you buy for your house is getting scary too and no matter where you go it's all garbage and some of it is unsafe. People will just quit and give up over it. As someone who has rebuilt more than one engine before and fixed numerous other cars I can testify to this. The timing chain cover that I bought for my vette started leaking. A brand new crankshaft seal leaking. So I other another one, still leaked. Nothing I did wrong, it wouldn't seal against the harmonic balancer. Changing the balancer didnt work either. I bought another from a different manufacturer (Pioneer) and that fixed that leak. On another engine the brand new rear main seal leaked passed the crankshaft flange. Changing that didnt fix it until I got a summit racing rear main seal and that fixed it. It's hard to find a good water pump that doesnt leak past the front seal. It's hard to repair a vehicle for a customer and guarantee your work when you cant even rely on the parts you buy no matter the maker of the part. I cant even imagine building a new engine from parts I can buy from the auto parts store. The parts would break.

I worked in Quality control for an aerospace company now retired , I would constantly reject parts for being out of spec and supervisors and management would do an override and sent the parts out to the floor . Most times the assembly personel would have to do a refit mod on the parts which wasted time or they would reject them and send them right back upstairs again where the process started all over again . If parts were to be shipped out for feild installation same thing . Most people if they found that like you did would just change the bearing affected and never say anything or do just like you and make them get it right .

I remember when I started doing tool and die back in the mid 80’s. Everything was basically new for tooling but we checked every thing we did with precision.
We had a dozen punch presses in back that we would run small jobs for certain customers. From a few dozen to a few thousand depending on the amount they needed. We used to check every part visually as it came out and then would take a part off every so often to the checked out thoroughly on the bench in a fixture to make sure it is within tolerance. We would check every 50th part to make certain that our parts were all within precise tolerances.
It was about quality and not quantity.
Nowadays it is about turning out parts before quality check.
We live in a world where over 50% of the parts manufactured is complete shit and has to be returned from the box.
Our government lets this happen because they only care about the shareholders interest because they are the ones pulling the strings behind the scenes.
    It’s a sad fact.

What the hell does the government have to do with aftermarket auto parts? It has NOTHING to do with any government agency, policy, or regulation. It has to do with INDUSTRY. When the shop floor is run by business majors, THIS is the result. Quit expecting government to solve consumer problems, that's the job of the free market. Sell crap, the consumer abandons you, your doors shut. The problem is what Tony just did "aw hell, I'll give them a chance to try again, and if they correct this idiocy, we'll all pretend it never happened". Nope, he should name names no matter what. "If you buy their crap, expect garbage because they're idiots" is the action that will end this idiocy. The QC inspector CAUGHT THE FAULT, some imbecile in management ok'd shipping the part that FAILED QC.

my first question would be, did they make a note of the oversized journals on the box, cam, packing material, or packing list? any thing any where? not only that, but who oversize's by such a small amount. you would not machine a bore over by so small of an amount. sounds like a: it's ok, close enough. got to get it shipped. no time to fix it.

You think that's bad I got one for you, I got a 73 Challenger 440, I bought from Tennesee and it ran, had it shipped to Florida by the time i got it the engine was blown, so I pulled it, rebuilt it with a 512 stroker kit from 440 Source, sent the engine out to a machine shop and had all the work done, I REUSED the cam, lifters and timing chain since they were new, I got the block back and the SAME CAM that was in it would not fit, same problem you have, went all the way in till the last journal. So i took the block back and the cam and they ground the cam journals so it fits, every thing great however i did notice i have some lifters not pumping up, I saw your video about reman lifters so I got another new set, same thing, so I ripped it all apart put in a solid flat tappet cam and still had to take the old cam and the new cam back to the machine shop so they can mic the journals on the old cam and grind the new journals to match. It only cost me $50, they had it done in a day so if you're in a time crunch you may want to look into that. Now you have heard twice.

Inspect and measure every part and clearance, period. No matter how careful and thorough, everyone misses sometime, but not that bad. I had a 351C cam ground by surely the same manufacturer, and it measured all good, until I started to actually assemble the rockers and adjust them. Something was just not acting right, as there was a big difference in the middle of the engine's valve adjustments and installed points. I removed the cam, and found it had the lobes on the two middle journals ground way different than the outer journals. I have used another company since, and have been well satisfied.

What is referred to as the Quality Control slip is probably the inspection report for that cam. Out of tolerance on the plus side but can be reworked. Maybe the cam grinder left .002 for the final grind and for whatever reason that .002 didn’t get cut. It happens. The cam goes to inspection where the discrepancy is caught and documented. So far, this is nothing too out of the ordinary in the machine shop. From this point forward, the company needs to examine their procedures and determine how a discrepant part could be shipped.
UT is exasperated with his recent run of bad luck, quite understandably. Really though in this instance, he’s only out time. No melted or seized parts. Friend of mine had a new piston that the pin bore was not perpendicular to the cylinder bore. Caught it with careful assembly techniques. Take your time and take nothing for granted.

Quality Control is a joke for almost every mechanical parts manufacturer. You can't trust any companies anymore. All of them is about production numbers, nothing else. Even when they know the parts are way out of tolerance, they still don't stop the process, and don't fix the issue. If somebody take a note on something like this, the tipical answers are:
"So what? We need the production numbers."
"Don't even try to stop production because of it!"
And the hugest embarrassement I ever heard: "Maybe they won't notice it..." (Where the "they" are the customers.)
In most companies the production managers can disregard or ignore quality control operators and managers. The whole QC system is pointless in every level of manufacturing. The bigger the company, be lower the expectations on this matter.

:) Quality would know the details for the part they inspect. They wouldn't assume it was special, they would check. That's a very basic Quality concept- check the work order. It's how every batch/lot./individual part is identified as it goes through the process.

    • @Disablednoob
      @Disablednoob 2 роки тому

@@bbb462cid I agree with that. However that is not my point, maybe whoever built the cam made it to be an oversized journal cam on purpose.
Meaning the cam was made correctly being oversized and it passed quality checks because that’s what it was supposed to be. Tony probably didn’t order it that way, but whoever put it into the system may have accidentally ordered it to be an oversized cam.(or a mistake of that sort) So therefore it would pass QC with the note saying it’s correct measurement for an oversized cam. Regardless of Tony actually wanting that. Does that make sense?

This story is nothing like that but its a lesson from unscrupulous used car dealers. I had to have a Camaro, so I found one in my price range, $3,500 (this was in the 1990's) 1982 Chevrolet Camaro Berlinetta. It was silver metal flake color that peeled off and when it did that it would rust, but this story ain't about the body! It had a 2.8 liter V-6, automatic with a electric locking torque converter. I drove it 50,000 miles the transmission went bad, the local used motor/transmission man got me one off the truck from New York, I want to say it was a 200R4, the torque converter never locked up again. But the motor started to knock, so having just put the transmission in, had to pull the motor. When I go to rebuild it, inside in various places it had three standard (stock) bore pistons, two 0.030 oversize Pistons, and one 0.500millimeter oversize piston? I never noticed any vibration but this motor, with three different sized pistons, I had no idea this was even possible. The 50,000 miles I drove the car it ran good, it was no power monger, but it was smooth and fun to drive car limited as the horsepower was.. 0.500 millimeter over?? I didn't know this was available on any motor?? I sold the body with the title for $500 and my Camaro lust was over and lesson learned. Give me a 1970 Plymouth with a 318 two barrel and honest 20mpg, you guys can have all the Camaro Money pits!!

*As a Quality Inspector* for critical safety items I am required to not only physically inspect to print, but I am required to have documentation of special processes such as heat treating as well as material certs traceble to the mill. My sample sizes are statiscally determined by failure rates of parts as well as paperwork deficiencies. Truthfully, a camshaft is not a Safety Critical component for a car. Now _recording the failure_ on the paperwork (oversize is an out of tolerance condition in this case, which means a failure in my book) means somebody took it on themselves to OK it. "Cleared by Quality Control"? That can mean a lot of things, sometimes it means not even examined by QC. There are three types of Inspectors: 1) Clear the Deck type: manufacturing LOVES this inspector. Everything ships. 2) Firefighter type: this Inspector wants to put out the fire and get only good product out. Manufacturing feels he is a "problem" as he is a speedbump, and Quality adds no Value in the Corporate lingo. A marked man. 3) Firestarter type: This Inspector thinks failing parts is the key to keeping his job. He fails almost everything. He is soon replaced by Clear the Deck. In Quality, the Golden Rule is that nobody will ever remember the times you pulled all the asses out of the fire. They will remember the one time you fuck up. That said, this camshaft is a stupid and basic issue. It's not even a mistake, it was an On Purpose. Tony is right: somebody should be in big trouble over it.

Mr. Blutarsky -- I don't know if I would say it was done on purpose. There is a lot of pressure on QC inspectors these days from upper management to get the product out. Constant infighting with management and engineers over acceptable product and changing tolerance levels has been an ongoing thing for decades now, especially in the aerospace industry. A proper AS9102 First Article Report is almost a thing of the past these days in some respects. I'm talking "proper", not one that looks like it on it's surface, which I've seen on numerous occasions. It's entirely possible that the inspector passed this product based on revised acceptability standards passed down from above or face consequences. I've seen it many times and have fought with engineers and management before over these issues (providing the revision didn't come from the client and their development engineers themselves, which would require a drawing revision change before I would touch it.....). I'm wondering if this company has a proper environmentally controlled lab with certified measuring equipment and properly trained staff to even know the difference? Or was this product "inspected" by someone on the floor designated as someone to "check" parts. Also, I wonder if their inspection department has even been properly audited by an outside independent agency? I'm retired from the aerospace industry now, but I've seen A LOT of bad changes over the span of 40+ years. (There is a good reason why I don't fly......). I know for a fact these problems persist in other industries other than aerospace, like automotive, which is the case here.

Maybe a part of this problem is that we don't call the manufacturers of junk out enough. Don't be shy Tony. You've had enough trouble with bad parts . Start naming names. Or maybe just show us the part boxes and you don't have to say a word !

in his defense, there's only so many places you can go. but the first time he complained about parts, he revealed it was Advanced Auto, and folks who worked there replied that AA doesn't pay well and so there's high turnover (if you've been to one, you concur) so that's why he got back the very same lifter he handed it to be returned (there was still oil in it). Needless to say, AA isn't the most expensive part company out there, if you catch my meaning.
sometimes you pay more to get quality. sometimes you pay more to take it in the shorts.
