  • Today we are taking a close look at the Guyatone PS-033 which is said to be a RAT type distortion for bass with an added clean blend. Tracing the actual circuit and looking at the schematic proved that to be mostly true. And with a very simple mod, this pedal can become an amazingly versatile RAT option for guitarist!
While there are many differences between this and an actual RAT that will make the purists claim that they are different pedals, at the core of its tone, the Guyatone is pretty much a RAT. (IMHO)
Furthermore, with the added clean blend, and the mod that I've implemented, this pedal has proven to be an extremely versatile pedal, and has become my favorite RAT variant.
I've set up several simple loops to show the different tones available from this pedal, and play them back to back so you can get a good idea of how the tone changes. I also do some fun experimenting to try and find tones beyond the typical RAT.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind words! I don't have any specific downloads available, but I make sure to shoot the video with the schematic full screen so you should be able to take a screen shot and save it with decent resolution.

How does the the guyatone ps-033 circuit compare to the Ibanez bs-10 ?

Thanks for watching! I don't have any experience with the BS10, and looking online I found PCB trace layouts, but couldn't find a schematic. But, from what information I could gather, the BS10 seems to be a soft clipping circuit, which would make a big difference in the drive tone. The other big difference is the ps-033 has the clean blend. Finally, the op amps are different, with the BS10 using a 5534 instead of the LM308. I'm sure there are other minor differences in the tone filters etc.

@@arito the bs-10 is soft clipping? I didn't realize a rat style circuit could be soft clipping, I almost no understanding of how these things work

@@watcherofthemundane I was also surprised when I read that it's soft clipping, but as I said, I have no experience with an actual unit, so cannot confirm it. I'm guessing the reason it's called a RAT style circuit is probably everything else in the circuit topology is very similar to a RAT.
