    You just heard the burly tones of the brand new MXR M85 Bass Distortion, a collaboration between MXR's Bass Innovations department and indie stompbox designer Ryan Ratajski of Fuzzrocious pedals, a company known for its big-bottomed dirt pedals. Fuzzrocious and MXR started with a classic distortion circuit, famous for its nasty demeanor, and re-worked it with big low end and modern bass tones in mind. Its tones are generated either from silicon clipping diodes, for an aggressive sound with enhanced compression, or LED, for an open, dynamic tone with increased gain. You can switch between them easily with the LED/SIL switch. Among the M85's distinctive features are its separate Wet and Dry controls, which eliminates the need for bass players to split their clean and dirty signals between two amps to keep the low frequencies tight and intact. The pedal's tone control only affects the distorted bass signal, working to tailor the treble frequencies for just the right amount of high end bite. As with all MXR products, the M85 Bass Distortion is made with premium components in Benicia, California, USA.

    beatiful pedal...with dry and wet knobs!
    From a subtle overdrive to crunchy, fuzzy. It is not "fizzy".
    For RATM to Metheny-like.

    Nice review. I saw the MXR advert for the pedal and liked the sound, but then all the tones on the other reviews I’ve watched have been too thin and bright. You’ve dialled in some tones that I might actually use!

    Nice, good to see some bass demo's every once in a while, especially because you're showcasing some pretty unique basses as well! The tones you displayed wouldn't be right for me, but you did keep the tone control above three o'clock for the whole demo, so that might leave me the wrong impression. I'm looking forward to the next one!

      There is an official review somewhere on here that actually turned me off of this pedal where the tone was only slightly engaged, so I'm quite glad this review was ramped up a bit! Anywho if you can find the other video it's worth checking out as it may prove this pedal can be a little more your style?

    Great sound. I'm noticing you have the tone almost all the way to the right in this demo. Wonder what it would sound like with the knob turned the other way. It's a very dark-voiced pedal.

      If you want a plug and play distortion the m85 will do a good job. If you want to experiment with tons of settings the after shock is for you. I was able to achieve absolutely killer tones with it but there is a learning curve. That being said the stock setups are great already.

    Not bad but I think I'll stick with my Catalinbread Super Charged Overdrive on bass. Other than the "Mighty Mouse" mode on a Keeley modded RAT I have yet to find a distortion or fuzz I like better on bass.
    There was a Prescription Electronics Depth Charge I used to use that belonged to a friend of mine but when I bought one of my own it sounded completely different. I took it to my tech to see if he could mod it to make it sound the same but apparently my friend's had parts in it that were difficult or impossible to find. : (

    What's the difference between the dry and wet options in terms of sound and tone?

    • @camerong6817
      @camerong6817 8 років тому +1

      The "dry" is the signal that is coming from your bass, while the "wet" is the distorted signal from the pedal. The knobs themselves don't change the tone or anything like that, just the levels of the dry and wet signals.
