- Today, we explore the world of the RAT. There are RATs, there are clones of RATs, there are variants of RATs. There's even a RAT board. We're playing Guyatone, Milkman, Ibanez, DOD, Boss, and so many more. Oh yeah, Addison has a version for bass.
Guyatone - Distortion Pro X-1
Guyatone - Overdrive Pro Z-II
Milkman - F Stop
Ibanez - Visual Super Product
T-Rex - Mudhoney
BBE - 427 Distortion
Exar - Distortion
DOD - Performer Distortion 555
Dimarzio - Very Metal
Exar - Distortion DS-02
KOD - Distortion DS-04
Line 6 - DM4
Fun fact: I live 15 km away from the T-Rex factory, and know several that used to work there. You need to find an older Dino-logo Mudhoney, or one from the Danish Collection, both made in Denmark: After we had been saying for years the newer ones, made in Asia, didn´t sound like the old ones, one of my friends brought one to them, and they discovered that several resistors in the circuit were in the wrong positions. They checked several examples, all had the same mistake: There was one guy who made them, and he was colorblind, and often stoned... Both of my Dino-logo ones have way more gain that yours, and will go from mild drive to fuzzed out stoner sludge with boost engaged, and they sound darker.
Damn Josh you’re seriously a badass guitar player even if you won’t admit it. All three of you are great musicians. Such good jams.
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
He needs some Swedish Death Metal Lessons to show off the HM2 dimed and other variants a little better, however, yes, he has his own style. And today having your own style is rare, maybe its because we are about the same age (and height!) Its all the stuff I would hear on 120 Minutes or Alternative Nation and liked even as a huge Metalhead. It has influenced my Metal playing too. I LOVE his Unicorn V2. What more could you want in a Univibe small box!?!?!?!
Seriously tho
I tell my mates in super secret band 🤫🤫🤫all the time to take note of 3 dudes on the tube making badass music for the world
The name, 'Cyst-er' is one of the greatest things I have heard in a very long time. Someone please tell Nick he's a genius.
That Not Tom Petty jam was very noice! The jams are one of the best parts of these episodes, I always look forward to them. Thanks for the great content!
It’s these kinds of interactive videos that keep musicians fully engaged ! Excellent improvisation , detailed technical exploration, and intelligent banter. You make us feel like we are a part of your team. I just ordered my first JHS pedal ( Octave Reverb) from a local music store- for reasons stated above.
Josh and Co., you have all got me quite excited about RATs! I saw the PackRat episode, and I think..... yup. I'ma buy a PackRat! Maybe 2, one for bass.
💪💪🐀💪💪
Another enjoyable video - the stuff you guys do is always entertaining and reminds me of live TV from way back when in terms of the randomness of what happens and the banter between all of you. Great stuff.
12:40 A Polish manufacturer called Blue Colander Stompboxes does an incredible Rat variant with a clean blend as well, it's called Tremond and it offers not only a clean blend but also a switch allowing to chose the type of clipping
Threre is a Spanish one as well. Comodoro Rat Bass. I have it and it is really good
Josh: "Whats yhat smell like to you?"
Me: Big Muff?
The sound of Nick's drum kit always sounds excellent to my ears.
Nick is a badass on the drums!!!
In a previous episode they talk about the kit as a clone of the drummer from spoons kit, it’s a custom one-off.
It always does, I wish they would do a video on their recording process
Yes, in a discussion about drum tones I suggested to listen to you channel, best recorded drums tone!
Tones of the gods! All three of you. Thank you all for always being inspiring!
Awesome to see Tym Guitars (from my local, Brisbane) getting a shout out. For the record, it’s pronounced “Tym” as in “Tim” since Tim Brennan is the name of the guy/institution behind the brand.
Up until COVID-related rent gouging put him out of business, he ran Tym Guitars as a guitar shop/music venue in the Fortitude Valley. You’d go there to see an *incredibly loud* local band, get inspired to start your own band, and buy one of the *extremely good* old restored Guyatone/Greco/Aria Pro clones off the wall for basically no money, and you’d be off.
Tym’s is still around, but he’s focusing on his pedal building-and his guitar building, he builds Mosrite clones that a lot of people who love Mosrites rate really highly-out of a private workshop in a dark leafy Brissie suburb somewhere. One of these days I’ll get in early enough to actually buy a Tym pedal, they drop and sell out in seconds usually.
The Cyst-er bit was savage!
Lol
I can’t get enough of Josh’s pentatonic licks. Loving the jams, nice chemistry!
John Loux, thanks so much for answering my question about my white chorus. I really appreciated you taking time to assist me. You’re a legend mate. 👍🏼
I literally laughed out loud when y’all said “he has the BAG!”
I haven't gotten far into this yet, but I'm happy that you fixed the audio sync issue. Nice job!
Just looking through the comments to see if it was just me! Haha
Thanks for putting the vod back up!! Work day salvaged
48:06 "Play something harsh". That was my favorite jam so far!
I have a Rat variant from a local builder. It has a 3 way toggle switch that changes the clipping. Middle position is a straight up clone of the original Rat. It's one of my favorite pedals.
"Very Metal" was from Vivian's jacket in the Young Ones and the knobs go up to 11 as a nod to Spinal Tap.
Woohoo for Tym pedals appearance! They’re a crazy mojo bunch of pedals and insanely hard to get a hold of. Would like to see them featured !,!
One reason the viewership might have started going up at the end was because it was just past 5pm on the east coast. That said, once you started getting into the box(es), I was committed. I wasn't leaving until I found out. Nick is right, unboxing gets you views. And the mild chaos that ensued was just the right kind of energy. Where did all the rats go? Josh (in the distance, slouching over to get in the shot, while tugging at the box between his thighs): Japan!
Nah is that eating that twin thing ugh
@@GUSCRAWF0RD lol
@JHS Pedals - Please reissue the Pack Rat tee or better yet hoodie - I'd buy it!
I didn’t realize how much the audio lag bothered me until they fixed it
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I’ve run into that Guyatone bass distortion many times and I’ve always wondered how it would sound on guitar with the clean blend, and you delivered in spades! You played it a long time! I appreciate that!
Buckethead likes to use those big Line 6 pedals. He's been using them for years to create his unique sound so that's likely why he still uses them. They give him the tone & fx he's looking for.
Isnt that what everyone does? Otherwise why use them?
I’ve seen him a few times and never gotten a good pic but yeah those big line 6 pedals he always had the purple one (modulation I think) and the green one for all the delays plus all of his other fun pedals. He definitely knew how to use them to fit his style!
@@MrMatthewlashway the purple one is the filter and synth pedal. I used to have one and really regret letting it go. Those things rule.
@@MrMatthewlashway That green one has such a beautiful sounding reverse delay. One of the best one's I've played. I wish I still had one but I somehow fried mine. I think I plugged the wrong voltage power supply in by mistake. One of the few pedals I managed to fry. Was completely my fault though.
@@jimtroeltsch5998 Open up the pedal and there's a chip in the middle of the board. Carefully, or recklessly who cares, take it out and put it back in. Works almost every time.
Hands down the best JHS live show. Crazy stories. Insane laughs. A drum solo? And tons of rats and jams…. 🤩🤩🤩
The T-Rex Mudhoney 2 is cool also. Basically 2 identical circuits so you can have them set differently, I love mine.
You never seen anyone using the 2!! I also love mine ! Also the fact that the tone knob acts as an “on” led is cool too
I love the old Ibanez, DOD and Washburn pedals from the late eighties. The DOD FX65 Stereo Chorus, FX90 Delay, Ibanez TS10 Tube Screamer Classic and DS10 Distortion Charger, GE10 Graphic EQ, and the Washburn FX:4 Flanger were my favorites. Now they are an arm and a leg for a used one.
You can build them (either from kits or from scratch) for a fraction of their price.
“…they don’t scurry when something bigger comes their way…
…they come prepared.” Don’t worry - Josh knows.
I used to have a bunch of dod pedals with those soft switches. Every once in a while the switch would break. I had an old broken vcr and decided to see if the buttons in it were similar. THEY WERE IDENTICAL! I couldn't scalp them fast enough. I managed to get all of my old broken pedals working again. Don't actually remember what happened to those things. I was like 15 and in my late 30's now. So lots of gear has come and gone.
Jhs should do a variant of the Morning glory with some kind of tweaks or a double morning glory like the double barrel or king of tone.. would be awesome to run a low gain morning glory into a red morning glory or vice versa. I mean I plan on getting another morning glory to do that myself but both on one box would be awesome
I loveeeeee double pedals !!!!
Update I am currently running two morning glory’s on my board, one of which is the throwback V1 and the other a stamped v3, meaning I don’t have have the high gain toggle but it’s still amazing tone and I also own a v4 morning glory in case I wanna swap one for it
@@stoneysdead689 you realize the king of tons is literally two blues breakers right? Many songs have been recorded and played live stacking two soft clipping or even two hard clipping OD
@@stoneysdead689 I also run two morning glory’s on my board one set higher gain and one as my always on tone and I run them together for higher gain
@@stoneysdead689 I’m not even reading all that lol no one said it was a part for part clone of the bluesbreaker pedal and no one said Clapton used the blues breaker pedal lol, are you the kot one soft clipping side and one hard clipping side then? Your point was not stacking two soft clippers. My original comment even said one said a morning glory and one side tweaked just like a kot.
Got the PackRat for Christmas - I absolutely love it; it's STUPENDOUSLY AWESOME! Been enjoying the JHS UA-cam stuff for a long time, but this was my first JHS pedal. Saving up for the Bonsai now ☺
🌲
there's a rat chilean clone from a "boutique" store called "La Forja". I've been using it for some time, and it emulates the sound of the rat in a pretty good way, but also 2 different features, a mode called "reduction", that reduces the distortion of the pedal and makes it much more controllable, and a exp pedal feature, that is sensible to the light, and lets you make weird random noises.
That sounds cool!
Josh was legit near tears at the end awww 💙💙💙
Being a single dad on a budget, I grab my pedal deals where I can. I recently passed a bunch on my beginner pedals on to my daughter, and built them a pedalboard with an isolated power supply, including my Mosky Golden Horse (I think Kit likes it because it’s a no-nonsense clone of a Klon). I have a couple of drives on my board (SD1 for boost, Bad Monkey for higher gain), a couple of fuzzes (Big Muff Op Amp, and the sleeper TC Honeypot - thoughts on this one?), but had yet to satisfactorily fill the disto slot. The DS1 is great when tuned right, and I passed the Rat-based DOD Grunge onto my daughter’s board because she loved it. But going on your love for the Rat, and not having tried one in 30 years of playing, I decided to dip my toes in Rat-water. So I found a Joyo clone (variant?) called the Splinter. See what they did there? Anyway it has the usual complement of D/F/V knobs, but has two many switches - one for a Stock/Fat option which gives a boost to lows, and one for Stock/MOSFET gain stages. It’s really an interesting take on the classic rat. My second choice was the Mosky Black Rat, but this one had more options, and seemed to have filled the distortion slot nicely. If you haven’t checked it out, as a rat lover you might dig it! And your jams.. jeez you guys are tight when you want to be. So good.
RECORD TIME SUGGESTION:
HUM’s “You’d Prefer An Astronaut”
Please check it out if you haven’t. This album takes “shoegaze” and smashes it with walls of trippy driven guitars, backed by unique, jaw dropping, drums. It a perfect use of the “shades of colors” sound, and “beautiful quiet to heavy” formula. It blows me away that after 20 something years of listening to this album,Im still hearing new sounds and textures. They are still so influential to me and countless others..
Good to see the Guyatone Bass Distortion get some love. 😁
50:37: 🎵 Pure gristle. All the time. Gristle on mind. 🎵
I was about to compliment Josh for absolutely slaying the Tom Petty part, but then I realized that it was probably the DiMarzio pedal. It's like winning a footrace on a dang bicycle... Just like so many successful bicycle thefts.
I love Nik’s string philosophy, I’m afraid I think I’m cut from the same mould as sadly my strings last longer than they should and truly have that dead tone, when I do actually change them once in a blue moon the noticeable difference in having a bright tone and clean string makes me then say to myself I will definitely start changing my strings more frequently, but then unfortunately I slip back to my old self and six months later I’m still using the same strings! Suppose I’m just an incredibly lazy guitarist.
🪦
@@jhspedals I must be a klone
Most of Nick Drake's recordings seem to have very dull strings on them and that works so well in those recordings. Like Nick said, adjust your tone to what you have on the guitar...and if you want the sou d of new strings go ahead and keep them fresh. To each their own.
you guys are killer!! I come for the pedal history and I stay for the fucking jams!
My first amp was a Peavy Classic 212 in the late 70s , 2 channels with a built in phase shifter ! A great and very loud amp wish I still had it . I do have a Peavy Studio Pro 112 and it is a GREAT pedal platform
I love your all in one pedals....please do a tone bender with all the different Marks...that would be cool!
This is my favorite “one too many edibles” kind of UA-cam content.
Y'all passing the pedal board around brings me back memories.
I had one of those Very Metal pedals with the 11 knobs on it back in the 90's. I wish I still had it.
"Let's not play in Am.
Ok we'll play in CM."
Lol great.
Nixons Foma came out my Freshmen year in HS and that CD specifically the track Sister was on constant replay! I bought the vinyl LP this last year and it is a great under the radar album!
That pedal at 52:15 does, indeed, translate to saying "mirage". The Japanese is 蜃気楼 [ しんきろう ], pronounced Shinkirō (the ki sounding like key). Just thought you'd like that to add to the completeness of your history of the pedal.
Thanks!
Shinkiro Desu? Ahhhhh, Hizumitas Ratu! Eeeeeeeeeh! Arigato goazaimasu, kon ban wa!😃
Josh is a Ivy League level professor of pedals and the rhythm section empowers that platform to the moon
I got that modded Rat (I have the box) . . . Love it. Sad to see it go-get that the dollars don't make sense, but glad I snagged one before it went away. It has a sticker saying it was done at home.
Nick and Addisons' mustaches are currently starring in the Starsky & Hutch reboot on Netflix. Cheers, boys.
Nick's String ethos is virtuous and beautiful.
just to let you guys know.... I really enjoyed this episode. more random box openings please.
Agreed the BBE 427 is an overlooked pedal, especially for the price. Got it last year in a Black Friday Sale for $40 brand new.
Love the JHS guys! I'm currently trying to put together a board after depending purely on digital multi-fx since the days of the DigiTech GSP-5.
I would love for DiMarzio to rerelease the Very Metal pedal! Sounds amazing!
I got the Little Bear R.Attack, vintage, Turbo(my fav)and Dirty. $50! Its all the Rats I need, I use more fuzz and HM2 variants and HM2W and para eq and GEQ Idiotbox Effects Han Taun Klon Klone and Plumes for my drive tones, the HM3 Hyper Metal comes and goes. If you put a Tentacle in front of the R.Attack and stick a boost or drive after it, you have an affordable Life Pedal!
Finally snagged the DiMarzio Very Metal this afternoon. Been hunting for one a while!
just got one today.
We need Pack Rat T-Shirts in the merch asap!
I wanna hear more about that line 6 distortion pedal. Maybe hear it compared to the pedals it tries emulating.
Every iteration of the Line 6 modeling stuff from the POD XT forward has had a "Classic Distortion" pedal option which is the Rat. It does the low gain real well but doesn't add as much sustain as the real pedal does at the same settings. If you just wanted to have that on its own you could get an Line6 M5 and dial up the Classic Distortion (or a dozen other effects) and put it in front of your amp. It sounds a little cleaner, more defined than the pedal. The pedal probably hits the input of the amp a bit harder and so the real pedal sounds a bit warmer and makes the amp sustain more.
You have really pulled me in with all this Rat lore!
I fit into the category of a small number of Rat enthusiasts who primarily use my rat on settings between 7 o'clock (below this is of course silence) and 10 o'clock. Mostly I have it around 8 o'clock just where the distortion seems to ramp up and have to just tap it with the side of finger until it gets to my magic spot.
I have heard people using low gain variants which I thought I would love but I always seem to prefer the standard modern Rat 2 down low. The problem is it is hard to dial in the exact setting I like where I think the Rat gives an almost tweed-like breakup to my amp.
At this moment, I have my Rat 2 in the shop putting a 25K pot into it instead of the 100K pot it comes with to control the distortion. No idea whether this will work or not.
So, I have two questions:
i) Is there a low gain Rat which doesn't change the sound of the Rat but just gives you the first third of the distortion range spread out? (Perhaps the Guyatone PS-033 Bass Distortion with the clean blend is the answer! Or the Clean Rat in the Deuce Tone?)
ii) Is there a better mod for what I am trying to achieve than the one I am currently pursuing?
Sick beats on Cys-ster Nick!
Tavo at Nocturne makes an interesting RAT clone variant called the Marquesan, which even though is not currently advertised as such IS a replacement for Tavo's Ubangi Stomp which he designed from a white label RAT for his Gretsch hollow body with Filter'Tron pickups. I hope you guys do an episode on Nocturne pedals ... they are quite special.
I’m surprised I haven’t seen the Woodcutter from Big Ear N.Y.C. mentioned by you guys when it comes to rat clones! By far the most impressive rat clone I’ve encountered.
I really enjoyed the jams this time great stuff. Sometimes it's not my taste, but that's what keeps music interesting and fun. If we all played the same way, it would be boring.
The recently discontinued Hooligan by JRockett is also a killer rat style circuit that goes from that till all out trombone fuzzzz, sick pedal that never got the love it deserved
I had that Nixons album. It had fire/flames on the CD or something, IIRC. That was one of my favorite songs when it came out 🤣
Or possibly matchstick heads that were red on the CD itself? I really need to look it up now lol
Edit: YES! I WAS RIGHT ON BOTH COUNTS! The album art for Foma has flames behind the little girl and the album has red matchstick heads on it! Wow. I haven't had the album for a couple of decades.
37:48 the BBE 427 isnt a RAT at all, it's based on the guvnor circuit with a BMP tone control
I bought the Proco Rat 2 to put in front of my Acapulco Gold Pedal . Thanks for turning me on to Joyo R Series, Behringer and Earthquaker Devices Behringer pedals , love the show , the humor is great thanks be well and safe. I'm waiting for the great American change over from guns to effects pedals, I believe your show is helping the cause along the way.
I’ve got the phaser (or phasor as they call it). from the DOD series with the squishy switch. Feels more like rubber to me, but equally silly and impractical. Plus the annoying power cable made it a pain to put on a pedalboard. Picked it up cheap and has a great phase tone that can get crazy pretty easy.
Great jams this week
dudes , and yeah the drums sound amazing .
Y'all should do quick 5 minute segments on fan pedal boards. You obviously have enough pedals to duplicate rigs so a quick rundown on why it's "bad" or "good" in pedal choice and/or signal order.
Are you making the DiMarzio Very JHS pedal? Agree, that thing is cool!
I LOVE THE DIMARZIO VARY METAL!!!!!!! PLEASE MAKE THIS JOSH!!
The random Joshua through the first song was awesome.
😊
Rat with clean blend = Juggernaut
Great episode, thanks guys!
Can I get a shortened version of the upload of this video with only sounds of the pedal effects? Please
Wow I had forgotten about that song from the Nixons. Just wow, time travel
Jams are on fire today!!!!!!
Petition to get Joshua a moog so he can join in the jams!
Did you look at the Eartbound Audio Iron Pig ?
Man I need to get a Jazzmaster. Josh's always sounds so crunchy and amazing.
Do it!
Tje dodgy foot switch Polish one needs to be re-issued and thaT WAS THE BEST JAM.
Super Fun Episode, and I Dug It! N I Laughed A Lot! 😅 Did Nick find his Backpack in Poland?
I love my Pack Rat. How do I get that cool pack rat shirt?
What Joshua’s describing is called a teratoma. I also love the song Sister by the Nixons.
I bet the music store in Winfield was Norris Music. I live in Jasper which is about 25 miles east of Winfield. Sadly Jeff Norris was killed in a motorcycle accident a few years ago. His brother Jerry now runs the business
Love the pedals, love the show! Always look forward to geeking out with you guys (and ladies doing the behind the scenes grunt work). But geez what is up with those turners Josh? New strings? Wow you'd think you were thrashing that thing like SRV during the Third Stone bash up.
Are the jams they do available somewhere to listen to?
36:30
it was Dee Brown or Shawn Kemp. Depending on year
The t p ripoff jam that nearly became a shuffle was awesome
I will click on any video with Rat content. Still planning to get a PackRat 🐀. Thanks for keeping your promise to show the pedals that you couldn’t include on the
P-🐀.
A late ‘80’s pedalboard. I never heard of such a thing at the time.
Back then I was gaffa taping my pedals to the stage and hoping for the best 😎
He said 79 didn't he? That is my birth year and distinctly heard itm
@@KelticKabukiGirl You are right. I must have misheard. I found one on eBay and it is also listed as a ‘79.
I remember back then I used 3 pedals and the thought of building a board never crossed my mind.
@@omikl yeah, he said very early ProCo, had to be late 70s
DOD, not only is it a distortion pedal but doubles as a dialysis machine.
My favorite pedal inspired by the Rat, is the electrofoods ultd Nepenthes. For my money, it's my favorite distortion sound.
Josh, Nice use of the term "kerning".
