  • We had a problem with our central vacuum system. It didn't suck! The one time you want something in your life to suck and it doesn't, lol.
    Here are the simple troubleshooting steps we took to fix it ourselves and save a few hundred bucks.

    Thanks for your suggestion, it worked for me. There was a plastic bag stuck outside the filter above the dirt collection container on the main unit in the garage. You definitely saved me a technician visit. Thanks again for the nice explanation.

      That's awesome and so glad to hear it. Love it when we can get things working again with simple steps rather than having to call someone!

      Similar story, albeit, replace the bag with a solid block of lint tho I managed to figure it out long before I found this, let alone watch it.
      Unfortunately now that I've slain that beast of a Monty Pythonian dust “bunny”, more like one of those horrifically overweight rabbits that people raise to the size of large cats, I'm running into another problem.
      When the motor gets a chance to warm up and I let the hose port's lid slam shut, the motor spins up and sounds like an air-raid siren spooling up and then down, quite loudly I might add. Loud enough to hear from the kitchen (albeit right literally steps from the garage, but still...)
      Is this healthy central vac behavior or does this mean the impeller and/or motor is/are shot?
      I might add that the machine was left unplugged and abandoned in a clogged state for well over 2 DECADES, long before I was born

    It was the trap at 1:38. Clogged completely on a house I just bought. It worked just enough for the home inspector to miss it. This is a million-dollar home. They maintained NOTHING. Finding it all out now, piece by piece. THANK YOU SO MUCH! HIGHEST RATING.

    All those tee fittings are a problem for blockages and I'm surprised you have so many. I never install them in a line, only behind a valve and use them sparingly. They have limited applications and the way I see them here, they become an issue for plugging the lines. I've been doing this for over 40 years and heavy object clean-outs are used only in commercial systems where gravel or other heavy objects are routinely encountered, usually in long vertical runs.
    I suspect that this will be an ongoing issue for this system.

      Thanks for your background and experience on this. The home was built in 1999 and I'm sure designs and approaches have evolved since! We definitely check and clear it out regularly now.

    Great information, How do you clean the screen filter inside the unit, can you remove it???

    • @lmsdiy
      @lmsdiy  Рік тому

      Funny story to that... I didn't try to remove it. I used my shop vac to vacuum that one. 😂

    It's strange to me that your vac doesn't have a filter in your catch bucket like mine does. My Nutone uses filter bags inside the metal catch bucket that you can just pull off and replace with a new clean one, without having to clean out the debris in the bucket.

      Nice... That makes much more sense! I think it's just a design (flaw) with ours. Or maybe the original home contractor messed up and forgot to do it properly?! 🤷🏻‍♂️

      With these units usually it blows some of the dust out through the vent and some of it ends up in the bucket usually whatever can make it through that screen goes out the vent and into the outside

      In all my years of installing Central Vacuum‘s you should never have to have clean outs I’ve had one in my house for the last 35 years and I’ve never had a clog so obviously the installer did not care when he installed this 😢

  • @pn102
    @pn102 2 роки тому +3

    No expert but after doing lots of research on these, I believe that T clean out should be a sweeping bend. That hard T creates a catch point and is wrong per install guidelines. And why you had a clog to begin with. Looks like you have a bad install.

    • @lmsdiy
      @lmsdiy  2 роки тому +1

      Interesting. I'm definitely no expert on these either. We aren't the first owner of the home. I think this was installed 20 years ago this way!🤷🏻‍♂️

      @@lmsdiy check out Central Vacuums Sales and Service UA-cam. He talks about these things from my searching this weekend. There are also some videos if you search for the right kind if pipe videos, vac pipe vs pvc and the bends are made for this they talk about this stuff. That there is probably a $10 DIY fix for this. Good luck. Enjoyed the video!

      I was going to say the same thing. A longer sweep would also be more efficient, so the flow would be greater as well.

    My floor brush is working fine but the carpet one have power but not sucking upbthe dirt.What could be the problem?

    • @lmsdiy
      @lmsdiy  3 місяці тому

      If everything is working well except for the carpet head, my guess would be the carpet head attachment is clogged/obstructed. Disconnect power, detach it, inspect it, clean it. Best of luck!
