I remember when Detroit's city bus was called the Department of Streets and Railways, (the DSR),now the city bus system is now called the Detroit Department of Transportation, (D-DOT).
The fishbowls were also known as the Silver‐Sides.
P.S.,
I even remember seeing the bus on the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel run between Downtown Detroit and Downtown Windsor. I used to ride the fishbowl or also known as the silver side busses.

Music to my ears also!!! I drove a 1973 gmc fish bowl for my drivability test in April 1989 with BC TRANSIT, a dream come true! These buses were a pleasure to drive except for the strong arm steering lol! Ask any operator or mechanic and you’ll get the same response! Iam still driving into my 31st year now with Coast Mountain Bus Company! Sure miss those old girls,thanks for the memories! 👍

There are a couple of videos on UA-cam of rides on New Looks and the later Classics and I know how you feel. I just close my eyes and I am commuting to Dawson College in the 1980's. Glad you enjoyed the video.
I remember seeing this bus back in the late 80's early 90's operating the Tunnel Bus line on the US side (Downtown Detroit) of the border. Great bus , great video and great memories. Thanks!

I was riding these buses in the late 80's early 90's so the engine sound is nostalgic to me as well (I didn't expect it to be). Only thing is since they were San Diego Transit buses , they were light blue.
Drove many of these at London Transit. A classic. We had 35 foot ones that had 2 speed auto transmissions. After they had been sitting all weekend when you tried to put it in gear it would grind. They would only do about 25kph up a decent hill also!!

I drove that type bus in the late 80's as a driver for Metro Bus in Buffalo,NY. Ours had single back doors.
That engine is music to my ears. I remember the fishbowl buses. I rode the ones Milwaukee County Transit System had. Great video!!
My dad crapped in one of these on his way to work in 77
Was working at a transit agency and some of our older buses needed a boost after not running for the weekend. On Monday the garage crew will be real busy compared to other days boosting the oldest buses. So not starting after a year in the field is no surprise. They would even tell us NOT to turn it off during service.

Sandra Buyllock-SPEED! (1994)-of course those in that film already were old school, going back to 1959. Flxible's near-lookalike, and, here folks, NEAR-lookalike is a UNDERSTATEMENT, almost as long,back to 1961.
GM came out with this bus first and was forced to allow their designs be used by other bus companies.

I also liked the copycat Flxible as I rode many many of them in the 70’s in NYC, but my heart is for the New Look Fishbowl any day.

That Was A Old School Retired D-DOT Bus Shipped To Canada From Detroit.
NYCTA maintenance was so bad around 1980 that I rode a fishbowl with a leaking exhaust manifold. The whole rear interior was soiled with black soot except for the seats, having been cleaned by passengers clothing. Sometimes the rear row was so hot, the seats were un-useable.
That bus reminds me of the movie "Speed".

Aldrick GMC I wish I could give you an answer. I'm sure the museum intends to restore all of it's vehicles. Unfortunately like all small museums it is easier to acquire and save items then it is to restore them. They really need more internal display space, because harsh Ontario winters are hard on vehicles whether they've been restored or not. I have more footage of their unrestored vehicles. I just have to find the time to edit!
Never mind the 'GM' or 'GMC' nameplate. This bus # 912 is Canadian built. The interior lights
are above the windows, behind the ads. US buses had the interior lighting in a center tube
on the middle of the ceiling. Didn't you notice that ? LOL !

We had buses like that in Baltimore, from 1959 until around 1986 or '87, when they were taken off the streets. I remember they had slippery, hard plastic seats. And when they got older, the air conditioning worked only sporadically or sometimes not at all.

I remember that particular model in the early 80's in Bedford Ohio before being replaced with GMC RTS 2 and Fixable's
Scott (busgreasemonkey) used to have one of these. He gave it up for a '47 Silversides due to the lack of underframe storage.

I hope there was no damage to the engine during this "cold start", being that after sitting for a year, the oil and fuel probably had condensation in it. Question: why didn't someone hook up an external compressor to get air pressure to rise, so to release brakes and to fill the suspension bellows and to save fuel ?

i recently purchased one of these, can anyone tell me if its 12 or 24v system
12V but it can have up to 4 batteries ran in parallel for amperage for starting.

What kind of tool would want to vandalise such an interesting bus.
I drove these for five years back in the Disco ‘80s. The batch purchased by the transit company was already more than five years old when I hired on, so I can’t rate them for when they were new. That “Jimmie” Detroit engine was loud and smoked like a train because it was a blown two-cycle; energy efficient it was not. You could seat about 35 and cram another 15 or 20 in the aisle. Nobody was supposed to be standing in front of the government white line close to the front door, but people had to get to work or back home, so you crammed them in if you had to. As these crates aged, so did their performance. The air conditioner system got hopelessly filthy after a few years, so I always dreaded the approach of summertime. A fan for the operator would have helped, but they weren’t stock and none were installed during the vehicle’s lifetime. Most operators brought jugs of water or some type of beverage (hopefully non-alcoholic) to combat the monotony of the infamous Deep South heat. These things eventually developed rainwater leaks over time and little could be done about it. The steering was manual and the brakes had to be adjusted every couple of weeks or so. Driving with “slack brakes” was begging the morgue for business. Several of these New Looks or “fishbowls” (as far as I know, none of us ever heard these terms) were sent off to be “reconditioned” at the end of their initial careers. Unfortunately, it was a waste of taxpayer money. A lot of my memories about these buses are some of the passengers. One dude was known as “The Phantom”. He would get on late in the evening and, waiting for a non alert operator, use the rear seats to pass his solid waste. He got me one night-big time. I am glad our Canadian friends have one of these 4523 models (that was the only technical term I ever heard for them) for their museum. Don’t believe I will be coming up to see it though.

The museum that owns it is a private company. They don't have much in the way of resources. They have a building which houses an extensive classic car collection, plus another that contains a collection of ambulances. Unfortunately they don't yet have a structure for their buses or trucks yet. I hope that this and the other videos I've done on their collection helps attendance.

It's a 6V71, which means 6 cylinders, in a V configuration with 71 cubic inches per cylinder, a 318 horsepower diesel
Myrrydyn 6V71 did not put out 318 Hp. The 8V71 did.
I stand corrected,! The 6-71 was a a supercharged in line six with 238 horsepower, and that thing could pull STUMPS, it was a high torque screamer, I drove a few and can work on ANY Detroit two stroke diesel, because I have injector height gauges and shims. so if you'll please pardon My gaffe, but again you're right the 318 was the 8V71, which we called the Screamin' Demon.. I owned four 8V92 Engines both "Green Grenades" and Silver 92s, and I can STILL make them talk! Again please pardon My mistake I forgot, I"m kinda old

It's a 6V71N Detroit Diesel engine with VS2-8 VH9 or V730 Allison Transmission I've been to Lakewood and they got four GMC Fishbowl models three from Public service transport and one from Transport of new Jersey four old looks three from Public service transport and one from Classic tours one MCI MC7 three MCI MC9 Crusader ii Coach series one original one MC9A and MC9B 96A3 GMC PD 4106 eagle model AE15 and 20 the four generation Flxible models two 870 buses one Metro B suburban and Metro D suburban and other buses from the garage

Racing the engine that hasn't run in over a year isn't going to build air any faster.
Shush ... don't tell the mechanic that. He is a professional, and doesn't need actual facts to get in the way of his bumbling objectives.
Besides, how is he supposed to stretch a 4 hr task into a 4 day excursion, with a bus-load of overtime hrs, if the "smart guy" in the audience is offering helpful hints; such as: "Dude ... put an airtank in the back of your pick up truck, and pressurize the air system externally."
This type of forward thinking could collapse the entire Canadian economy.
Actually it will build air faster at a higher RPM. I’m not a fan of doing that but it’s common sense that it will build air faster if the air compressor turns faster.

Yes, engine RPM determines the compressor speed, but ...
Nothing compares to finding the numerous air leaks, and fixing them.
It works like magic. Without all of your air escaping from a half dozen leaks, the system builds pressure just like it was designed to do.
We've all watched the neighbor next door, pulling madly at the starting rope of his lawn mower, until he is wheezing, panting, sweating, cursing, and on the verge of passing out on his overgrown lawn.
Its all that we can do, to restrain ourselves from leaning out of our kitchen window and shouting: "Why don't you just figure out why it won't start ... and fix the problem?"
Instead, we stroll over to him, with a sparkplug wrench, and say: "Let's check the sparkplug." ... and proceed to fix it for him.
There is a "method" that works for every problem. 😃

This Bus needs to be Truckloaded to Washington DC to Landover Metrobus Division so they will painted in DC Transit color orange and green and created metrobus.and put a malfunctioning smartrip box on the GMC fishbowl bus.

That would be a cool project. Just make sure it has a 3 speed transmission. Many only had 2 speeds and could not make highway speeds.
What’s The Model Year That That Bus?
The 'new look' bus was produced in Canada between 1958 and 1985. I would guess that this one was built sometime between 1970 and 1985. While at the museum I failed to take note of the year. It would have been on the builders plate in the front entrance.

I believe 1986 was the last year they made those buses for Santa Monica. And you know what else is weird new look buses made for the US had air conditioning. When you notice that bus from the movie speed the extra compartment above the back windshield at the very top of the back window? That’s air-conditioning I suppose Canadian buses didn’t need that because it doesn’t get that hot in Canada in the summertime it gets really hot in the southern United States up to about +45°C

Anthony Young these were seldom offered with 671 most were 6v71 or 8v71 in some markets in some years . You may be thinking of gm’s prior model the “old look bus” which were mostly sold with 6-71 .

Why have a museum piece sitting in the weeds?
The museum would like to have a building for their larger vehicles but it is privately owned and operated and does not have much in the way of resources. They do have a classic car collection and a vintage ambulance collection indoors.

Dansmodelworx 71 series came in 2 cylinder 4 cylinder 6 cylinder straight and in v configuration of 6-8-12-16 and even a 24 cylinder
Octranspo gm fishy's had rea seat single back doors up tp 1979. 1980 1981 1982 had the double set of backdoors.

I never understand as much money a museum makes - they can afford a few big carports to give the vehicles some shelter awaiting resto so they don't continue to degrade waiting years. A good carport is about $500-$1,000. Chickenshit money to a museum.

Aha! so finally another out-of-province bus sporting those flopper backdoor gates..they must've graced models plying snowbelts. They were indeed the safest means for passengers operating those doors themselves..except for those fucking troublemakers at whom you'd delight at harshly smarting their kneecaps as they alighted the bus right behind you!
There were also known as "Mackay Gates" I believe a few London, Ontario buses had them as well.
