My grandmother taught me to crochet/sew during summer visits when I was 7 yrs old. I must have been a very patient little girl & her a patient teacher. she made beautiful blankets for the church. Those memories with her have stayed with me all my life.
I've been crocheting 50+ years but still love watching beginner tutorials. And I remember my first couple projects, they looked like badly failed medical experiments. 😄 I almost gave up, but persevered, and now any decades later I enjoy making pretty intricate doilies. Don't ever get discouraged.
My aunt taught me how to crochet a simple stitch (single?) Many many years ago. I haven’t really kept up with it, but tonight I took out some yarn and a hook and blindly started a single stitch. So I guess my Rainbow loom days have helped in muscle memory? Lol I want to start off with basic stuff and eventually make my way up to a blanket perhaps? It’s calming for me, and will help me remind me of my aunt (she’s still alive but I haven’t seen her in a long time).
Yay, a perfect video for me. Since I started watching your videos I kinda wanted to give crochet a go, I'm an absolute beginner but I think wearing something you made with your own hands it's quite rewarding. So this will come in handy. Thank you for the inspo, Kate ❤️
Thanks for watching Teresa! 🥰 So glad you’re feeling inspired! You can do it 💪🏼 there’s nothing more rewarding than finishing a project that you can enjoy! ❤️
Maybe I needed this information before my grandmother taught me to crochet. Although I’d never heard of Clover until just a few years ago. What a difference they make. My hands don’t ache while crocheting these days.
Found yarn at the thrift shop, a set of two hooks at the local dollar store, looking forward to trying crochet as a beginner at age 53😳😂 Thanks for the great beginner tips!

This was SUCH a helpful video! I have a tip that might work for others as it did for me: I had some cheap acrylic yarn lying around from when I attempted knitting years ago. I figured it would be great for practice as you suggested, but it was REALLY hard to distinguish stitches and see what I was doing because it was so soft and fuzzy. I tried a couple of coaster-type projects and was a little frustrated. THEN I tried a multi-colored, spaced dyed yarn. TA-DA! I could easily see where my stitches were and even where I accidentally grabbed a few fibers of stitch as I was pulling through. Hope this helps another newbie!
Totally agree.... plastic hooks are horrific!!😜 My grandma taught me with UK terms & pen grip, so that's most familiar to me, but I became bilingual with US terms when I was fairly young crocheter.... thankfully, as both are super useful. 🧶 Blessings from South Australia💕🐨
I love your passion for not buying a plastic hook lol. I just ran across your video and I am so thankful when I bought a hook last week to start trying I didn't buy one of those!

Finally I've been looking for a video like this😇. ❤Thank you so much❤, i can't wait to start but idk what to make. Can you do a video where you crochet as much as you can in one day?☺
I’m in no way a beginner I just like to leave peoples videos on in the background as I do my own crochet work. Love your voice- super soothing! Absolutely got me into the crochet zone. I personally found that I worked better with plastic hooks than with metal ones after struggling with metal ones for months, I’ve never used a wood/bamboo one though. Never thought to try it because I never liked the feel of them when I used them for knitting since they’re rubbed together weird but maybe it would be different using one to crochet since it’s only a single hook rather than 2 needles. Do you have any good recommendations for a first time Bamboo hook as I kind of want to try one?
This is a very good overview video. However, all acrylic/plastic hooks are not created equal just like not all aluminum hooks are equal. The hook she had was way too pointed on the bottom of the head, that will create all types of problems. Hobby Lobby makes a set of clear/color acrylic/plastic hooks that look and behave very much like Susan Bates Hooks. I use them all the time with great results. Plus they are extremely economical and durable. Not taking anything from Clover because they make a great hook, but they cost anywhere between $8-$9+ each in the US. That's a little much to spend on a hobby you are just learning because chances are, you will need other sizes. That can add up quick. The Hobby Lobby hooks cost on average of $1.25+ each per 5 hook set.
Kate: I do recommend keeping it small just start with something small like a baby blanket or a lap blanket, make your dog a blanket- Me, already planning on making my dog a blanket for my 1st project: *I’m already one step ahead of you*
I've just bought your Millennial Jumper pattern. Got as far as making the yoke and am now stuck. I'm a beginner and bought this pattern as it was recommended for beginners but the pattern isn't obvious to beginners. Do you have any videos for how to make the Millennial Jumper please???

Hi Kate! I'm just learning to crochet and my cuz gave me a aluminium 8mm crochet hook and I got yarn that's ten ply. Do you have any advice on whether I can use the supplies I have? (I'm 12 so I'm too young to order online haha) Means a lot to me if you'll reply😊😉
Hi! You can absolutely use these supplies but you may find your stitches will be very loose. I would recommend a 5mm, 5.5mm or 6mm hook with 10 ply yarn. Goodluck! 💛
Yes that’s fine! 😊 you made find it uncomfortable after a little while so may want to look at something with a handle once you’ve mastered the basics 💕
