Absolutely fascinating!! I admit after hearing Queen Elizabeth II was buried in a lead lined coffin that I was very curious about such an old practice still being used. Now I understand the tradition.
Im a southern bread country boy who lives in Buckingham Virginia in the United States and Im going to miss the Queen. Just a Beautiful person with a Beautiful soul. Many prayers for her and her family!!!
This is undoubtedly the most in-depth analysis on this topic that I have ever seen. Your dedicated research, clear presentation, and remarkable illustrations, held me captive. Thanks from a subscriber in Florida.
Thanks so kindly for your commentary, details, and everything else! Condolences to all of the UK on HM The Queen's Passing. The World has lost its Granny.
This excellent and informative video reminded me of a limerick I heard/read, I cant recall which, when I was a t school. 'There once was a man named Fred, who awoke in his coffin of lead, "It's cosy enough" he replied with a huff, "But I wasn't aware I was dead"'.
I’m a daughter of a mortician and embalming has got to be the most disrespectful thing you can do to a dead body in my honest opinion, but you explained it well and without being too gross
As a former mortician who left the field, this was one of my biggest reasons. I completely stand behind green burial, not upselling grieving families, and taking death back home. Many funeral homes are owned by large corporations now. Death has become so industrialized, and impersonal. I’ve told everyone that I care about to refuse embalming. It’s a violent process, and is very unnecessary. It was understand for President Lincoln when he was on the train from DC to Springfield IL. But for normal person, it’s not. Proper cooling, a bit of makeup if needed, is all that’s really needed for a viewing. I’ve told my family to put me in the casket and close the lid please. ❤
Thank you @macgivermacbook. Truth at last! I'm very uncomfortable with autopsy, I do understand the need at times, but crikey it's a cruel thing. My beautiful brilliant son. I could see the line under his forehead of the skull cut. He had blood in the corner of his mouth..(why? was not an accident) went to put my hand on his chest and it sunk down. The horror, the cruelty never leaves.
Thank you for a very interesting and informative video on a topic I really hadn’t thought about before. Thank you also for giving the more macabre details in a plain and sensible manner without too much unnecessary gore.
The parish I served in as a curate had the winter quarters of a number of Showground (fairground) families. Funerals are traditionally a splendid affair, with folk coming from afar to participate. And the (oblong) casket MUST be lead lined - demanding a lot from the family members as bearers, and from the Undertakers who lower it into the grave. Thank you for your fascinating videos (& The Antiquary, which is a monthly treasure trove).
I can't imagine arranging plans for your coffin 30 years ago. Wills and funeral arrangements, life insurance policies etc are such morbid, yet essential, topics to discuss. I was 10 when the plans for her coffin was decided on.
Thanks for such a detailed and informative program. It's interesting to me to learn about how different civilizations prepare their dead for their "afterlife" as it shows a bit about their beliefs.
So happy to have discovered your channel! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this phenomenal video! I also enjoyed the one about the Royal Vault, which deservedly has so many views. 😊
Allan- I live in London and I’m very grateful for the education in Royal burial; I believe that it’s important that as a British person I know about the heritage and traditions. Without your channel I don’t think that I’d know what I know because you make it easier for me to access and you tell me facts and educate me on information that I don’t get from mainstream media. Thank you
Thank you for such a detailed video. I did wonder why it took so many pallbearers and why they seemed to struggle. Now I know because of you. Great content and great information. Thanks from Canada
That was an incredibly interesting video to watch, thankyou. In 2020 we were in Dublin (we are from Western Australia) and we took a tour beneath the church of St Michel (I think) and the coffins under there were draped in the same red velvet only where they had broken open at the corners you could see old dried legs and feet poking out a bit. There is also a terrific crypt where there is the mummified body of a nun, a crusader and one other that I don’t recall. I find this subject fascinating.
Thanks for the fascinating video. I must admit to being concerned about the condition of our Queen's body, considering it had been (seemingly) unrefrigerated for 10days. You've now put my mind at rest with the descriptions of the coffin. Best wishes from Australia 🇦🇺 ❤
Mr. Barton, thank you so very much for sharing this very pertinent information regarding the method of burial coffins for Royals. You answered all the questions I had in mind. 😊❤
Very interesting in detailed. It shows the care and respect given to those royals through the centuries but it also reminds us that nothing lasts forever.
Thankyou so much for your fantastic telling of Royal burials and what was done. I am totally new to your channel (as of today )and already find it so informative. I don’t know how I landed on this site but I’m glad I did and will continue to eagerly watch 😊
Something to touch on, is the unique British style coffin you guys use, the Lancastershire as is called in my circles. Their a single piece sided coffin that is bent around the base as opposed to fasceted coffins that are typically mitered. Its quite interesting to learn about. Also, interesting how the old practice of embalming is way different from how its done now.
Thanks for another great video. I couldn't make myself to watch the Queen's funeral; to me she had always been there and her passing hit me hard. It felt as if the last true English monarch had come to pass, leaving a vacant spot behind that nobody will be able to fill.
It may seem morbidbut many P see ople like myself ars interested in the history of things and the way in which things are done.So thank you for being so very to informative and in such a respectful manner.✌️🇭🇲
This is very interesting. I have always heard about the led lined coffins, but I did not know that it was done that way in the early days. I wonder why Diana. Princess of Wales had a led lined coffin if she was going into the ground.
I understand how the next person in line becomes King or Queen upon the death of the current one. However can you explain more about the Coronation, where the coronation happens many months later is this just a celebration? What happens if the new King or Queen should die before their coronation? Has this ever happened in the past?
I am going to make a series of videos on the coronation - which is a consecration and ordination of a sort. The coronation is intended to confirm the sovereign's reign and strengthen them for service, but it doesn't change their legal status as monarch.
11:16 President Abraham Lincolns coffin was some what similar to this, It was covered in black velvet, the studding and other furniture was of silver, and it was lined with lead. The lead lining actually helped to thwart an attempted grave robbery by a gang of counterfeiters who had planned to hold Lincoln's body for ransom in exchange for one of their engravers, however the would be grave robbers(two of whom were government informants) were idiots and did not plan for how to remove the coffin which weighed nearly a quarter-ton from the cemetery grounds.
I have mixed feelings re The Monarchy, but I am finding your posts very informative and respectful. Thank you for sharing such knowledge in such an informative way.
I found this really interesting to watch too it was informative and simply put this is the first time I have seen one of your videos and I wasn't sure what a lead lined coffin was its interesting to learn that during the Tudor and Stuart dynasty the body's were treated like those similar to ancient Egypt I didnt know they did that to royalty

The tone of voice and command of English language of the narrator is admirable!!! Seriously, intelligent talk without sounding snob.
I am impressed!

As a retired American casket manufacturer/ distributor representative, this was expertly presented that leaves little to one’s imagination!
Thank you, that is much appreciated.

It is deeply horrible, I'm all for burial that is as natural as possible.
As a former mortician who left the field, this was one of my biggest reasons. I completely stand behind green burial, not upselling grieving families, and taking death back home. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching!
I watched the entire funeral and was awestruck . It was beautiful. Thanks for the info.

Fascinating to learn the traditions and processes involved, as well as to see examples of how that work has (or hasn't) survived over time.
I can't imagine arranging plans for your coffin 30 years ago. Wills and funeral arrangements, life insurance policies etc are such morbid, yet essential, topics to discuss. I was 10 when the plans for her coffin was decided on.
I suppose it is practical, but it is a strange thing to contemplate.
Thanks for such a detailed and informative program. It's interesting to me to learn about how different civilizations prepare their dead for their "afterlife" as it shows a bit about their beliefs.
