4:02 -- Talib explains to Jeff why he considers him his DJ selector godfather. They go on to discuss Jeff being one of the first well known DJs to fully embrace Serato and how he came to use the system to avoid the pain and money spent hauling his records from gig to gig. They also get into Jeff passing around hardrives of his digitized tracks to other DJs including Talib, DJs in London getting jobs at the airport just to steal records coming off planes and Jeff only viewing Serato as a tool of convenience and not something that would make a DJ any better.
8:24 -- Jeff speaks on his annual Playlist Retreat that brings some of the most talented DJs, producers, singer/songwriters, and instrumentalists together at his home to inspire, motivate and fuel collaboration. He tells the story of how the idea was sparked through his 10 years of judging the Red Bull 3Style DJ competition and the moment he decided it would all be possible during his surprise 50th Birthday party his wife put together for him. They discuss what Jeff had in mind for the goal of these retreats and his being at a point in his career where he feels empowered to be able to only focus on the things he loves.
15:03 -- Jeff speaks on being a sponge to all the music that his brothers and sisters would play around the house, them showing him how to handle records, his realizing how the chord structures in songs could evoke different emotions and how much he was drawn to hip hop when it arrived with Jeff already having such a wealth of musical knowledge. They go on to discuss how important Gamble and Huff were to the creation of the Philadelphia sound, Jeff wanting to follow in their footsteps as well as how Jeff's A Touch of Jazz Studios came together, giving us records from artists such as Jill Scott, Bilal, Musiq Soulchild, Will Smith and others.
22:57 -- Jeff talks about handing out 150 copies of Jill Scott's demos to people in the industry and they discuss how good she is at painting vivid pictures of the Philadelphia block party and hip hop culture through her music. They go on to explore why the Philly hip hop scene put the DJs before the emcees and how much influence Yo! MTV Raps had on the culture from coast to coast. They also discuss how revolutionary the transformer scratch was, Jeff being one of the true pioneers of the technique, props given to originals like Grand Wizzard Theodore and how Jeff's mom being his first real audience helped hone his skills.
28:33 -- Jeff is asked about his and DJ Mick Boogie's Summertime mixtape series collaborations that they put out for 10 years straight starting in 2010. They go on to discuss how the idea came about of putting together these mixed genre mixes of summertime themed music and how they felt obligated to keep the series going every year with all the love they garnered from fans who would make those mixes their summer soundtracks. They also get into the importance of Pearly Lewis, Kenneth Adams, and Mark Johnson to Jeff's career path of DJing and Talib gives a shout out to his cousin Warren who inspired his own interest in hip hop.
34:30 -- Philly legend, emcee and radio host Lady B is brought up. They discuss how she was instrumental in Jeff getting his first opportunity to shine on the stage of the Music Seminar Battle For World Supremacy and how Jeff brought home the win. They also get into how beatboxing has been a huge part of Jeff's journey and the legacy of the late great Biz Markie. Jeff speaks on how Biz was one of the first rappers he befriended in the industry and how he was the ultimate crowd pleaser when he took up DJing with his unmatchable comedy and charisma doing sets. Jeff goes on to tell how much Biz's passing really hurt, speaking to him only a week before his health started rapidly declining
43:31 -- Jeff is asked about his and Will's good friend Charlie Mack who has been called "The Big Brother of Philadelphia". They discuss Charlie being their bodyguard as well as their dancer and Jeff explains why he calls Charlie his Forrest Gump. They go on to discuss the incredible year for the culture of 1988, how instrumental the records released in '88 were to the evolution of hip hop and Jeff gives his take on what was behind it all. They also explore Jeff and Will originally being chosen for the starring roles in the film 'House Party' and why they turned it down.
51:24 -- Jeff and Will's 'Brand New Funk' is brought up as they discuss how that song and their first hit album 'He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper' was all recorded in London. Jeff tells how he and Will had no clue of the success that the album would bring and details why they left Word-Up Records to jump on with Jive. They also discuss Will and Jeff's emphasis on storytelling, how songs like 'Parents Just Don't Understand' were a precursor to Will and Jeff's eventual casting in 'Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' and how Jeff was made to feel like a troublemaker when he had questions about how much money could expect to make from album sales.
59:56 -- Jeff speaks on how his childhood friends chose very different paths later in life. That being on full display when he and Will were up for a Grammy, and they had members from both the Junior Black Mafia as well as the Philly police force on the same stage with them while accepting the award. They go on to discuss Jeff and Will's third release 'And In This Corner...' and dig into the song 'I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson'. Jeff details how he and Will had both known Mike for years and why Mike being knocked out by Buster Douglas two weeks before the single came out became a problem.
1:06:04 -- Jeff and Will's song 'Live at Union Square, November 1986' is brought up and Talib notes how it changed his life. They go on to discuss the backlash DaBaby faced over his saying "everybody that got AIDS be quiet" and Will getting away with saying the same thing on record decades before. They also get into the 'Homebase' album and how it highlighted Will's transition from Fresh Prince the rapper to Will Smith the actor. Jeff tells how Will would always be saying he wanted to be the biggest movie star in the world despite many people's one-dimensional views of what artists should do with their talents.
1:12:09 -- Jeff talks about putting together an album in the late 90's featuring artists Common, Jay Dilla, Masta Ace and Eminem who was still unknown at the time. Jeff details what Will told Em about his future in the business that Em took to heart and how Sony shelved the album, but later changed their tune after Em blew up a year later. They go on to dig into Jeff's 2002 release 'The Magnificent' the featured artists on the record like Last Emperor, Pauly Yamz and Freddie Foxx as well as his 2007 release 'The Return Of The Magnificent' featuring the likes of Jean Grae, Method Man, Biz Markie, Rhymefest and many others. Jeff also tells where his and Will's signature handshake originated from.
1:18:00 -- 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' remake is brought up. Jeff gives his take on the series and details what he respects about the show more than anything. They get into how the show came into existence when Morgan Cooper made a video that went viral on UA-cam and caught the attention of Smith. They go on to discuss how unique the casting call was and how it brought together such a wide dynamic of actors. They also talk about Roots producer James Poyser getting on Will and Jeff's 'I Wanna Rock', how tight knit the Philly music community is and we get introduced to Jeff's two sons Amir and Cory attending the show as they discuss how they've been carving out their own paths in the music world.
1:27:49 -- Jeff tells how he's had a reset of his life and career after falling deathly ill to covid last year. His coming to the realization that there are more music lovers sitting at home right now than there are at the clubs and how he can be just as impactful by streaming his sets to those that just want to hear good music. Jeff talks about feeling like he's been able to tap into his creativity more than ever lately, notes several albums he's working on including one with jazz legend Bob James as well as one with Rakim. He also expresses how happy he is seeing how his peers have branched out and found success in so many facets of the industry.
So basically he came on in the wake of what his "best friend" did on national television in order to use the publicity to push future projects..🤔

West Philly house parties and block parties were 🔥 From the mid 70's to early 80's! Guys like Jeff, Cash, Miz, Lightning Rich, Handmaster Flash, Code Money, Disco Rat, Grandmaster Nell, Dino, Astro Boy, Kozmic Kev, etc.. The pioneers were legendary!

I’m really glad I found this. I grew up in Philly during the days he was talking about and my best friend was (and still is) a DJ so I remember lugging around the crates and going to the records stores every Saturday to pick up the new records. The block parties where the DJ’s battled were cool. The crazy thing is you never realized that you were a part of Hip Hop history because you were having so much fun.

jeff has always been a gracious, humble man. his honesty and frankness is a testament to his position as an unofficial ambassador for music.
he has this uncanny ability to make his fans feel like they are a part of his success. i feel like i grew up with prince and jeff and when i bump into jeff he talks to me with the familiarity of someone that he has known for years. i will always root for and support this brutha.
The way he conveys his pride about realizing where all his inspiration comes from; AND how insanely well he expresses his gratitude is an absolute joy to watch. I come back to this interview regularly, yet somehow get "inspired for the 1st time" every single time!

Im from Philly like Jeff similar in age. I meet him a few times in Delaware. Funny story we were in a supermarket at the same time and our carts ran into each other and I was shock to see who it was that i ran into. Its always great to listen to his stories and share wisdom on why he has lasted so long in the game

I put Jazzy Jeff next to Great DJ's like SCRATCH, PREMIERE, MAGIC MIKE (bass music pioneer from Orlando), or CAPRI; DJ's who work the tables like a jazz musician, not just cutting all wild and sloppy. I specifically recall hearing 'TMJJ' in the summer of '87. To this day, the Transformer scratch KNOCKS..ME..OUT!!! I thought i'd heard it all until that moment. BTW, Will Smith is a DAMN GOOD lyricist to boot.
"Who pays. Who doesn't pay." This was really validating to hear as a professional that got stiffed on design work for family. Jeff is so up front. Honest.

Got to meet Jazzy Jeff one time at Snowshoe WV. His hype man loved me. London Fog during jacket and sporting a mohawk. He made me pose in the crowd. I helped my big booty manager on stage to dance at the end of the set. While I was talking to some friends trying to get one last drink I hear a bunch of ppl saying "Wassup Moose!" It was Jazzy Jeff and his crew. RESPECT

It’s annoying how Kweli is constantly interrupting Jeff to interject how own stories and then jumping into the next question without letting Jeff finish his answer to the previous question. So many good stories we only got to hear the beginning of. Kweli always makes everything about himself instead of just letting his guests tell their own stories uninterrupted.

i love these stories of how the philly music scene used to be… Jeff said the philly music scene is tight, it was in their era its segmented now those who were at the tail end of his era who got on from all the mentorship dont mentor like jeff amir and poyser did or cultivate talent so all we have is laptop beats and no real chemistry and magic

This Is One of My FAVORITE People's Party Interviews. DJ Jazzy Jeff Is a BEAST On The 1's & 2's. My Moms & I Both Bug Out In The House Together When I Play Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince Joints. My Favorite Part Tho Is What Talib Said About Being On The Stage At Shows But Not Being PRESENT In The Moment. As An Artist Myself, I Always Talk About Energies & How Important It Is to Always Put Yourself First & Making Sure You're Good Enough Mentally to Do Shows Or Anything. It's Also Why I Don't Be Super Pressed to Perform All The Time Either. Doing What You Love to Do Is Only Fun When It IS Fun, Not Because You HAVE To Do It. It Should Be Authentic & Free.
In 1985 I thought that Jazzy was the grandest DJ of all the DJ's I heard. Since then I became a fan of many other great DJ's , but that thought never changed. Still the grandest of them all in my humble opinion. Side note: Biz Markie - Goin' Off was the very first Hip Hop album that I bought and damaged while scratching the same spot over and over again. The record is right here beside me in my crate. Shout out to the Hip Hop community. Peace..

I remember the first time I heard "Charmed Life" with J Live I stopped what I was doing and just listened to the beat. I could not believe what I was hearing how it was pretty much a straight up jazz track and it was so hip hop. NO 808 hits or anything. I was floored by that track. Still one of my favorite songs in any genre til this day.
As a Hip hop junkies I couldn’t stand Will, but Jazzy was the Man! Beautiful podcast!

I have a few comments today: 1) Jasmin, I think you're great for the show. Not sure who is writing entire essays saying otherwise. But, you add good energy and balance to the show.
2) Wintertime? Lol that's a dad joke and a half. But it would probably be an amazing song.
3) This episode really made me grateful to Talib, Jazz, and all the musicians I grew up listening to, for being great father's. Growing up, so many people my age didn't have father's around. I think that paradigm and stigma has changed, in a large part because of these roll models.
