The number of times Martin pressed the button, reversed Nelson's move, pressed it again and just carried on is quite amusing: "no, play something else".
Nuclear Chess - Martin's queen causes an explosion whenever it captures (similar to Atomic Chess, but the attacking piece doesn't explode). If this is too easy, then the explosion gets buffed to be able to affect pawns. Radioactive Decay - Your pieces leave behind radioactive decay along the squares they moved. Any piece (even Martin's) that moves to a radioactive square (not across it) is destroyed. Radioactive squares decontaminate after 2 moves by both players. If this is too easy, then the radioactive decay only affects your pieces. Zombie Chess - Martin's pawns are zombies! When capturing, they transform into the victim piece (so a Black zombie capturing a White knight would turn into a Black knight). They lose their zombie abilities after transforming. If this is too easy, then the zombies remain at their original square and instead swap the colour of the victim piece. Big Blue Button - Whenever Martin's bishops gets captured, all of your pieces on the same file and rank as the captured bishop get annihilated. If this is too easy, then play a harder bot. If this is too hard, then your king cannot be annihilated. Knight Boost - Martin gets an extra turn whenever he moves a knight. All of your knights are replaced with bishops, and your pawns cannot promote to a knight. If this is too easy, then Martin's bishops are also replaced with knights. If this is too hard, then your knights are replaced with rooks.
Some suggestions: Double Trouble - For every move you make, Martin gets 2 moves. Pairs - On odd turns you get to make any move you want. Even turns you have to use the same type of piece you used in the previous odd turn. If that isn't possible you lose. An eye for an eye - Every time Martin takes one of your pieces you have to take something back. If that isn't possible you lose. If that's too easy, every time Martin takes one of your pieces you have to take one of Martin's pawns. If that isn't possible you lose.
Of course it wouldn’t work that way with double trouble if nelsi (or anyone trying it) was in check, or does being in check mean they lose? Edit : mistype
Brings back fond memories of playing my niece at chess when she was young. I would let her flip the board whenever she got behind so that she didn't get too frustrated and I could play "for real" instead of going easy on her with deliberate mistakes.
I got a good one. Game against Martin, but after each move, Martin rolls a random square on the board and if one of your pieces is on the unfortunate square (the king is immune), that piece flips to Martin's side. Can your army handle defectors?
I feel like this challenge isn't very interesting because 90% of the time, Martin plays against himself and you don't get to do anything. Maybe if the red button was more restricted (like there needs to be a bigger advantage, or Martin can only use it every X moves) it would be more interesting.
Zombie chess: anytime Martin captures your piece, the captured piece switches colors (and the attacking piece stays in its original place, but you still go next). Or success chess: every time Martin captures a piece, he gets another turn immediately.
some suggestions: 1. chess against whatever bot you want (this applies to all of the suggestions) but pawns can't capture. 2. chess but you can't move anything to the same side of the board as the queen, and pieces that are already there at the start, you can't use them. 3. beat agent chess but with double the pawns, knights, rooks, bishops, and queens (on your side).
New challenge idea: Silent wolf: you play against Martin but you are not allowed to check him or directly attack his queen (you can capture his queen if he blunders his queen) the only time you are allowed to check him is if it's checkmate
Hey @Chess Vibes! I loved this video and it was super fun seeing Martin switch the board. I have a suggestion for another game you could play against Martin. Every time he moves a pawn, he gets 1 queen, anywhere you want to keep it. Every time you move your queen, Martin gets an extra pawn, anywhere you want to keep it. This will be a fun challenge. If Martin En passant's you, he gets a knight instead of a queen. The game is a draw if all the squares on the board are covered. If this is too hard for you, then switch the bot to Agent Chess and then make it so that when you move a pawn, you get a queen and when Agent Chess moves his queen, you get another pawn. If possible, can you make this a video? I would be really excited to watch this kind of video!
Try this against the strongest Stockfish, but you try to lose against it instead of winning. And every time you're in a losing position, the board flips.
I feel this kind of challenge is less playing good chess and more about setting up problems that nearly work while keeping a losing positions. The idea is to keep and out till its mate in 1 though it could be very hard to make it work.
"Scorched Earth" vs Martin: Castle as soon as possible on the side where you are being attacked the most. After you castle, you must immediately use the pieces you used in castling (especially if it means sacrificing or blundering them) when you attack the aforementioned advanced attacking pieces. If you want to make it more challenging, combine this ruleset with "First to Glory" rules (First 3 captures you make must be made with the king and if you can only get out of check by capturing with another piece before your king captures the required 3 initial pieces, you lose instantly).
Suggestions: Multimoves - Martin gets 2 moves each turn; or even 3 moves. Was already suggested below, I second this Double loss - Every time Martin takes your piece, you lose another piece of the same type. If Martin takes your queen, you lose all pawns.
The way to do this was definitely to give up a bunch of material first so that the board doesn’t flip. Then line up a battery to the castled king that can easily be stopped by a variety of moves. He’ll miss the block, and boom, it’s over. It also wouldn’t be as much content with the constant blundering and flipping of the board, but it’s still an interesting thought project lol
Great video, loved the concept. Maybe you should try atomic chess vs Martin or another bot. Similar to the mode on lichess but here the rules are simple When ever a piece is captured, both pieces are knocked off the board, not just the captured one. I think this would be rather fun for everyone to watch.
Video idea: Play against Martin. You are only allowed to move knights and 1 pawn at a time. You can start moving a different pawn only if the current pawn dies or promotes. If you promote the pawn, you can no longer move it unless you promote to a knight.
This would be more true to spirit against a slightly higher rated bot. The idea is it's mimicking when you play with your little sibling and you switch sides with them when they hang their pieces so they'll keep playing. Well the problem is that sibling recognizes sibling is losing, but then when they flip the board, they have forgotten why they are losing, so they don't save themselves from the tactic, and then recognizes that they are once again losing the piece, and so on, stuck in a loop of "simultaneously knowing and not knowing what's happening." A higher rated bot will still blunder, but when they switch, they will probably be strong enough to remain aware of the tactic.
Possessive Chess: When a piece captures the opponent's piece, the attacker possesses the captured piece. (example: if white bishop takes rook g7, the rook turns white, and the bishop is removed)
Chess, but before the game you choose 3 pieces (pawns can be chosen too). Your pieces can't move except chosen ones. If you haven't chosen a king, check on your king is checkmate.
Chess puzzle. White to play and win. White Pawns are: A2, B2, C2, D3, F4, G3, H3 Knights are: C3, E2 Bishops are: G2, H6 Rooks are: A1, F1 Queen on: D2 King on: G1 Black Pawns are: A7, B7, C5, E5, F7, G6, H7 Knights are: C6, F6 Bishops are: D7, H8 Rooks are: A8, E8 Queen on: A5 King on: G8
Gentleman’s Chess: Under no circumstances are you allowed to take the Queen. If she checks and you can’t block or evade, you lose. If that’s too easy, extend to the bishops as well, cause a gentleman never attacks a clergyman.
Chess but whenever Martin pushes a pawn, he will get a rook on the square where that pawn was earlier. The only time he won't get a rook is when he captures with that pawn or he does en passant
At some point I lost track which color are you playing with. For couple of moves there was Martin Martin Martin Martin. The eval bar was playing tennis.
Army recruit Chess You start with a king and 5 knights, Martin starts with a king and 3 knights. Each move Martin makes (after he makes the move) he recruits a knight to add to his army. Choose where he puts it, somewhere around his king. If Martin's king is surrounded, you win.
Suggestion: Pandemic Chess A new virus has hit the chess world, and every piece now has to maintain social distancing. Every piece has to be at least 2 squares away from the nearest piece of the same color. The first two rows don't count if the piece hasn't been moved. Once a piece is moved the rules apply to it.
Something crazy I'd love to see is every time you capture a non queen piece it's removed but then upgraded and placed somewhere on board. To decide where it's placed (if you're playing white) start at a8 and try to place it, if the square is occupied go to b8, then c8 ect. If all of the 8 file is taken then go to a7 and continue until you get an open square. How the upgrading works, captured pawns promote to bishops or knights (whichever he has less of, if it's a tie do bishop) captured knights and bishops promote to rooks, captured rooks promote to queens, captured queens are permanently removed from the board
The funny thing is, you're actually (in some sense) playing against max-power Stockfish here. You cannot generally get a mate in one without having some colossal advantage, and you can't set up a trap that lets you get that far ahead, because Stockfish will see it. The only way this can be won is if you have an even position with proper play, and Martin makes a one-move blunder that gives up mate in 1 move. Even Martin doesn't do that very often. (Or is it like his own mates in 1, where he will never miss it? In any case, you can't rely on it.) I don't think even Magnus could win this challenge very often, with the rules as they are.
I think we should make a new rule : Martin can only press the button after your move before Martin's move This way, Martin making 10+ moves consecutively will not happen
The fact that the M1 wasn’t planned and that it just came from random Martin moves made that ending a little unsatisfying 😅 I’d love to see a version where you throw a bunch of material to keep one side and then meticulously plan a M1 for Martin to blunder, with like a battery to his king that could easily be blocked if spotted lol
