An excellent instructor to let Kim go through her whole thought process without interruption or smiles or giggles. Then taking the time to show where she was right or “close”, and where she was totally off. People learn by talking through it and explaining what they think, not just listening to instruction. Then they instructor emphasizes the correct thoughts and explains the rest.

This was such a great video! The bit with Kim and the cowl flaps had me just roaring with laughter. But then we get to hear Kim's "guesswork" on reading the approach profile, and I was smiling at how silent Kris was being all the way through, and i"m going... this is pretty good, but I can hardly wait for the review! And sure enough, first things first, GREAT try given limited real knowledge. Got so much right or close. I also noticed Kim verifying pre-flight stuff like altimeters and other stuff before takeoff, reading off airspeed and calling Vr, etc. It's fantastic to see her ever increasing flight literacy! Can hardly wait for the real training to begin! (edit to add: AND CONGRATS ON 100K!!!)

It's always fun to ride along with you guys! Even these short hops are great. Because the short distance there's much more going on. You are a great example of how to stay ahead of the aircraft. No biggie if you didn't but I sure hope you recorded the Mustang flight and going to share it. I totally understand if you didn't though. As always thanks for bringing us along with you and I'll see you in the next one.

@ 18:00 . This is a common error among IFR students. The Maltese cross is only the FAF for a non precision approach. The end of the fan on jeppeson, of the lightning bolt on NOS charts is the glide slope intercept and FAF for precision approaches. They usually are in the same place on the chart but not always

Fun as always! And... Great tip for VFR pilots to load an approach. On my final solo cross-country flight as a student, I flew into KDAY, and was pretty low and far out when I aligned for the approach... and had a little trouble seeing the right runway. The controller was very kind, and simply asked, "Sir are you intending on landing on runway 6L? (I was more aligned with 6R.) I immediately recognized this as an alert, fixed it, and responded, "Thank you, SIR.", and there was no "incident". Controllers were always helpful when I was a student, and greatly appreciated, especially around big jets.

Reading charts in front of someone with the knowledge to give the correct information is invaluable.
A while ago you guys published a "VFR Over the Top" flight. I didn't know the difference between "VFR Over the Top" vs the IFR request "to VFR on top". You gave me some homework and now I have another tool in my tool box thanks to that video. Thank you!
I can usually take off VFR locally and fly to my parents who are also VFR but the in between the layer is overcast or broken (there are smaller sized mountains between us). That was one of many reasons to get my IFR endorsement bc I didn't know you could do VFR over the top. However, I am glad I have the IFR endorsement.

It’s important for pilots to understand that a Class B airspace airport generally doesn’t matter to IFR pilots, the handling is no different. It does affect the procedures for VFR pilots. The busiest airports are Class B. Speed assignments to aircraft have nothing to do with class B or C only you are more apt to receive it at the Class B airport due to approach volume. You are correct, speed adjustments can not assigned be inside of 5nm.

Nice video, Kris. You gave a great learning video about approach charts. I think Kim did a really good job figuring out the chart, even though she was wrong. I've probably seen more Jepps than Kim has, but I'm not instrument rated and it's been decades since I've flown, and there was so much about that I didn't know. I'm glad for the opportunity to learn. Thank you.
So, a Cessna Mustang, huh? How many types do you have? What are you all typed in? I hope we get to see a video of the flight back from Providence in the Mustang, I think that would be awesome.
When is Kim going to start her PPL? And yes, I do think she's going to be a great Instrument pilot, it's kind of hard not to be when you're sitting next to a good one and you absorb it in. It's good to see good examples to learn from.

I fly mostly between central and south Florida. When it’s clear and a million, I file IFR, depart VFR, and pick up in the air to avoid that situation. In your experience, is there a reason why you would not do this as a rule?

Getting a clearance from miami in the air can be tough if they are busy. But to your point, I should file from a Palm Beach airport and pick it up in the air. ;-)

Well, speak of coincidences... LOL! Pointing out your mistakes is part of her SO function as opposed to FO...

How long can you run air cooled engines on the ground without overheating?

Generally speaking it shouldn’t be an issue if you keep the idle low and the cowl flaps open.
