Cornelia: "We must put an end to drug use among Elevens-" Japanese: "Out of the goodness of your heart, right?" Cornelia: "So they can be more productive!"
It's hilarious when you remember that a 0.2% drop in primary sector production was within acceptable parameters for her to slaughter an entire ghetto. This woman is crazy XD
The word "refrain" is a contronym, also known as an auto-antonym. A contronym is a word that has two meanings that are opposite to each other. In this case, "refrain" can mean both "to stop doing something" and "to repeat something." When used as a verb, "refrain" typically means to stop oneself from doing something or to hold back from an action. On the other hand, when used as a noun, "refrain" refers to a phrase, expression, or idea that is repeated throughout a piece of writing, speech, music, or other form of communication.
The whole situation regarding the guy that sold food hits surprisingly hard and is a great way to parallel Kallen's mom, but the moment we see of how happy he was when he realized he would study abroad, knowing how it all ended up, is like a kick to the stomach.
She knows who they really are, therefore when she whipped up the entire school into a frenzy to find Lelouch's embarrassing secret, she might have exposed their true identity for all she knew. Not so trustworthy if you ask me Cx
I think Lelouch's comments about the hot dog guy are at least partially about keeping up his persona of the aloof, uninterested student who has no real stake in the fight. At the same time, he's also kind of using that to rile up Kallen on purpose. I don't think he minds that she slaps him because he doesn't actually disagree with her; he understands very well where she's coming from. As for the change from within stuff... Suzaku to me feels kind of like the kind of person who can recognize violence in its most direct sense, but doesn't recognize it on an institutional level. He will disobey orders to save a single innocent person who's in danger, but he will willingly stand by while Brittannia commits genoice because fighting back would be 'the wrong way to change things'. He has great empathy for innocents, but he doesn't recognize the role of propaganda and state power in deciding who is innocent; Brittannia's violence is justified because it's their system, so they create the rules that give them the monopoly on violence; meanwhile, people who lose their country, their homes, their loved ones, and decide to fight back, are 'terrorists' because the rules say so, and thus they aren't 'innocents' anymore, and Suzaku doesn't empathize with them very much. It's like he believes that the system is somehow a natural and good thing rather than a construct specifically designed to legitimize those in power. He holds that going against the system is going against the good of the people, but the system isn't even representative of the people; it's used to oppress them. In a way, Suzaku is a great showcase of how someone can be kind, and caring, and overall what we might call a good person, and yet on a practical level still support oppression and atrocity. He hates what the Black Knights do, but the only reason he doesn't hate what the Empire does ten times more is because they have legitimized their violence, saying 'see, we play by the rules, unlike those lawless terrorists' - even though they themselves write and rewrite the rules freely as it benefits them.
Counterpoint: Most "Elevens" can live happy peaceful lives. Even attain fulfilling jobs. It's stated and shown that much of the Eleven government is Eleven citizens. What does rebellion accomplish? Death. Innocent people will die. Is it better to live in a society that hates you or die trying to change it? Are you willing to let those you want to help die through no fault of their own?
@@saltyk9869 I do understand your point, and I'm not pretending it's ever an easy black-and-white issue; the awful thing about these kinds of structural power imbalances is that the innocent get shafted either way. You do nothing, you get oppressed, denied, bullied, harrassed, potentially murdered - but there is also a chance you and your loved ones will be able to endure and survive, even if it's a fearful, humiliating existence. Fight back, and you may find liberation, or you may just be throwing everyone's lives away. And even if only a part of your group fights back, it might have severe consequences for all of you. I couldn't blame any individual in this situation for preferring stable oppression over the risk of open conflict; it's totally understandable. At the same time I also couldn't blame anyone for not wanting to sit by while their people get oppressed or murdered, to want to fight back, no matter the risk. Both responses are totally understandable. But in either situation, the blame should be on the oppressor, not on those desperately trying to respond to or cope with that oppression. That's where the anger should be pointed. Suzaku's anger and frustration are not aimed at Britannia, but at the Black Knights. He condemns their violence for putting innocent lives at risk, but somehow he completely glosses over Britannia's much greater role in this - the fact that by and large those lives are only at risk because Britannia will respond with massacres and genocide to the slightest hint of rebellion, and can do so with impunity because they have no accountability to anyone. Any argument that Suzaku can make about why he opposes the Black Knights and doesn't want to work for them, he should be able to level ten times as much against Britannia - but he doesn't. Instead he works for them, only wanting to change them from within. Why doesn't he want to change the Black Knights from within? Why is he happy to fight them and kill them in his giant mech suit, while still believing that it is wrong for anyone to do the same against Britannia? The only reason I can come up with is that he considers the state's violence a legitimate one, and any other violence illegitimate. Which is a very common attitude for people who do not question the system they live under; people shrug at outright violence committed by a state against its citizens, because 'that's what you get for breaking the law', even if those laws are complete unjust and discriminatory. They say 'they should have fought those laws the legitimate way, through the system', even when that system makes it impossible to do so. Typically the people who say this have the luxury of not being affected by these unjust laws, so they don't have to really delve into it, but it is also possible for people to just straight up not have learned to question the system. I would love to take Suzaku to visit any survivors of any of the massacres commited by Britannia in the show, and for him to look them in the eye, and tell them that yes their innocent parents and children and siblings got brutally murdered by a regime that will never answer for any of it, but if they have a problem with that they should really just enroll within the Britannian military and try to make change that way, otherwise it's really their own fault, you know, and also if you do try to respond violently in any way to what Britannia did then I, Suzaku, will jump in my mech to kill you, because at that point I no longer consider you innocent, but a terrorist, because you're only innocent as long as you meekly watch the people around you get slaughtered, okay? Like... I get not wanting to fight. But to be aware of the atrocities of the system, and still direct your blame and anger at the people fighting back instead of at the system oppressing them, the way Suzaku does, goes much further than that. And to me, it often makes Suzaku sounds either clueless about the realities of the system, or hypocritical in this approach to morality. I still keep trying to understand his point of view, but of all the responses to injustice, siding with the oppressor and fighting against the oppressed because you genuinely think it's the morally superior choice remains a very difficult position for me to understand. No matter which way I turn it, it feels like it runs into internal inconsistencies that you'd just have to ignore in order to keep functioning.
You hit the nail on the head, this is the most upsetting part of Suzaku's ideology. He is fundamentally unable to recognize that state sanctioned violence is just as bad (if not worse) than violence performed by those outside of the law. And you're definitely right regarding Lelouche's stance on the hot dog guy as well. A lot of people compare Lelouche and Light but they are massively different characters and I'm sure that Kenny will see this as the show goes on. He is manipulative but he does actually believe in what he does as Zero, when he acts like a Britannian student he is hiding his true feelings about the colonization of Japan.
Since the Japanese lost the war only 7 years ago, I believe Kallen was part of 1 big happy family until being Japanese suddenly became a sin and the parents were either forced to separate or it was decided by the two of them so the kids could live good lives.
Code Geass has some amazing female characters. Kallen, CC, Cornelia, Euohemia etc. Lelouch is obviously the best character but all the next best characters are mostly female
@@michellewatson4214yeah I getchya but counter point. That was the point. Light was that kind of character. If it makes us uncomfortable to see somebody manipulate and use women. Then it's succeeding so I don't hold it against it. Another thing for me personally that changed my prospective is seeing media depicting manipulative female characters as smart and clever and somebody you should root for while depicting manipulative male characters as scummy terrible and evil. and once I realized that I stopped feeling uncomfortable about it because it feels dumb
The hotdog guy: What Lelouch said "If we step in he won't be able to work here again tomorrow" is true. Don't step in if you cannot take responsibility long term, those guys would return tomorrow and do worse as payback when Lelouch and Kallen aren't around to step in a 2nd time. Those guys would prevent him from making money in that area, the guys livelihood would be at risk. He wouldn't be able to find another job as easily either, most businesses are by run Britanian owners they would never hire an Eleven who has been in a situation/altercation with Britanian customers, neither would Eleven business owners. Even if 1% of the customer base would refuse to buy from your store because of an employee that would be a loss, what business would take that? especially when said employee is 'just an Eleven'. Then the phrase "he choose to be servile to the Britanians" comes in, it's the best thing for him to do, don't make waves, suck it up and he will keep his livelihood. he likely has a family to feed or support and cannot risk it. Once you choose to fight back you will have to keep fighting or lose everything.
You're right. Spoiler alert: Later in the first episode of the second season, Kallen returns Lelouch's own words when she "accidentally" spills the tray of drinks on him while they are out at a club. Kallen tells him "powerless have no choice but to bear their lot in life. Regardless if their oppresser is wrong.", to which he replies "I'd appreciate it if you didn't push your values on me." So he was lying to Kallen here. I was going to point this out at the time, but I'm glad you and others are saying it now because it's important to keep this in mind to understand Lelouch's mindset and Kallen's opinion of him. Lelouch is such a good liar that he is able to fool the viewers.
The messed up thing is it wasn't an affair. Japan was invaded 8 years ago. Kallen's older. Kallen's mom was a legit wife but when the war broke out a high ranking Britannian can't be fraternizing with the enemy. Kallen was adopted because her stepmom couldn't have kids. Mrs. Stadfeld also tried to pressure the mother into never seeing her kids again but she refused. Eventually she was allowed to stay but only as a maid.
I love this episode because it slowly builds up the Black Knights and the episode focuses on Kallen. Soon they will see why she is one of Lelouchs best assets.
I wouldn't call her an asset. She's a willing participant who is allowed to question things. Calling her an asset makes her sound like she's one of Lights women who he uses like tools and then throws away
I agree that Kallen's anger at her mom was probably partially cause she doesn't like seeing how her mother is living at that moment and I guess that anger is the reason why she didn't realize sooner that her mom is staying there for her, not her father. She wanted to hate her mom and so she thought of a reason to hate her. I feel bad for them in this rewatch hehe. I was young when I watched CG for the first time and didn't realize a lot of things. Also, their current situation reminds me of what's currently happening in my country so I feel sort of... uncomfortable in a way lol
I can easily understand Kallen assuming her mom was staying to be close to her dad. It wasn't like Kallen really could interact with her mom. She had to keep up appearances. It's easy to see how she would think, "she's clinging onto some old lover that jilted her." In fact, some of that anger may also be towards her dad, depending on the full context.
40:25 I'm sure it will be elaborated more in further episodes, but Lelouch and Suzaku was NOT grew up in the similar environment. In short - Suzaku was groomed as a leader\general who will serve and protect his nation, while Lelouch was treated as a diplomatic tool and he was forced to compete by Emperor with his siblings while being one of the weakest - around the ninth in line to succeed to the throne or something (His eldest brother is 15+ years older than him, so there is no way for him to stand out). Also i'm pretty much sure it was already explained in the show that he and his sister was send as a hostages to Japan before invasion as a sign of peaceful intentions, for reasons unknown however (old practice in middle ages, but in that case - hostages usually die, if someone break a piece treaty)...and only there they got acquainted with Suzaku, and even than it wasn't nice and pretty - there will be couple of frames where it will be shown that Suzaku actually beat Lelouch (also in episode "Stolen Mask" Lelouch actually point out that Suzaku become softer, while Suzaku rebuked that he in return become much colder instead) . So both their background kind of explain their current point of view and behavior (as they should)
I watched this show damn near when it came out. One of my all time favorites. How the hell did I just now have it pointed out that "refrain" isn't just a weird name, and the "repeating" definition is the one they were going for. God damn it.
The wrestling move that Rivalz did to Suzaku is called a Side Russian Leg Sweep. What I like the most about that small part of the scene is the fact that it's a move that he can not only easily stop, but reverse it. But he's perfectly fine just letting it happen, and that is great to show more of his personality.
also re: the discussion about Lelouch's beliefs: i think a lot of what we saw in the scene with the hot dog man, i always took that to mean that he was basically just wearing the mask of a the unbothered student. like he has to pretend that he's kinda apathetic about it all to avoid suspicion
My interpretation of his thoughts on the positives of Britannia and getting slapped is his way of ensuring kallen does not suspect him of having the same double life.
@@LeftyPlaat Yep. Hard to imagine that the guy who sees little to complain about with the current system is leading a small rebellion to destroy it. Not like she knows who he really is, either.
Nooo, I finally caught up! Haha, I had a blast rewatching Death Note and now Code Geass alongside you two, your video format is really fun. I might have to look at your other playlists to help me wait for new episodes. You had some neat theories about the meaning of Refrain, and it's not impossible they did intend a double meaning in English. But you should know that refrain is the French word for the chorus of a song, the happy part that repeats and sticks in your head. The word refrain can also be used figuratively to speak of anything you're sick of hearing, especially tired ideas or excuses someone keeps using to avoid taking action. Refrain is a word that can refer to both a comfortable place you keep going back to, but also complacency and the acceptance of the routine. It therefore makes perfect sense as the name of a drug that brings back comforting memories, but is mostly popular among elevens who've lost hope of things getting better for them.
Less talked about but refrain in music also means a line that repeats throughout a song. One that you keep coming back to. The double meaning between both definitions really says a lot about the drug
This episode is one of the best written of this anime and is sadly underrated because it doesn't focus on the rebellion (although it does throw us informational pills like the conversation between Villetta and Jeremiah and the social repercussion of the Black Knights, whose debut took place in the previous episode), but in the hard life that the colonists of Britannia lead, the Elevens in this case, through the delicate family situation of one of our main characters: Kallen, which gives us one of the most emotional episodes of the series and allows us to get personally involved with the Elevens (it's a very good thing since Lelouch's story is the common thread of Code Geass, so the social and political issues that build this universe are in the background, but in this episode the social aspect is brought to the fore). Something that, without a doubt, makes this episode special is its episodic structure (forgive the redundancy). It is perfectly an episode that anyone can watch independently and understand everything that happens. And yet, in the end, it raises the (first) dramatic question for Kallen's story arc which, oddly enough, coincides with one of the many questions Lelouch has: will Kallen be able to change the world to one in which she and her mother can live together? (The world created by Britannia prevents Lelouch and Kallen from living the life they want with his sister and her mother respectively.) In one episode, the script manages to create a fascinatingly complex relationship between Kallen and her mother. Kallen isn't just "unfair" to her mother because she's not intuitive and it's not just a mother-daughter miscommunication issue. There is resentment. In part, because it hurts Kallen that her mother has given up her parental duties and rights "so easily"; in part, because Kallen rejects the type of woman that her mother is, in the same way that Lelouch rejects the type of man that his father represents. Parents are role models for their children who they can embrace, reject, idealize, or demonize. And if we start to compare Kallen and her mother, we see that they are the antithesis of each other. Kallen is rebellious, self-sufficient, and proudly asserts herself in her Japanese identity and her freedom; meanwhile, Mrs. Kozuki is docile, passive, and resigned to the point that she has shed her Japanese citizen status to live as an Honorary Britannian. This is probably where Kallen gets some of the motivation from her to rise up to fight Britannia, since she doesn't want to kneel and bow her head to Britannia like her mother does. Kallen is very aware of that and therefore there is also pain and empathy in their relationship. Kallen's harshness subtly shows it (I think that "cruel" treatment masks a noble intention: a way to force her mother to get out of the house where she is mistreated). But that empathy towards her mother is best evidenced in the conversation that Lelouch and Kallen have, which is important to keep in mind to understand their relationship (which is just as fascinatingly complex). Believe me the choice of words is important. It is not the same to say: "[an eleven] can live a better life if he bows to the Britannians" (which is essentially what Lelouch is saying) than "an eleven must bow to the Britannians to survive". The first denotes insensitivity. The second denotes empathy. Kallen has a violent reaction against Lelouch because she sees her mother reflected in his words and Kallen knows that her mother's life is no better, even though she has become subjugated to the Britannians by working at the home of her former partner's wife. And Lelouch seems to belittle the suffering of the Elevens throughout his conversation with Kallen. Lelouch knows it and he does it with that intention because Kallen has suspected him again, due to she noticed that he falls asleep in class just like her, so he took advantage of this opportunity to free himself from suspicion again. I find it funny that in this episode Lelouch can keep up appearances with complete insouciance and even cynicism towards Kallen, but it's hard for him to do the same with Suzaku and that shows how important his best friend's opinion is to him, since it clearly hurts him not to have his support. Lelouch can be quite emotional. I could go on for more about this episode, but this comment has gone on long enough. Thanks for taking the time to read me.
I don't think we ever get it explained about Kallen and her mom's past. But a theory that I read and think makes sense is that her father was in Japan before the invasion (Kallen would have been around 10 at the time of the invasion) and met her mom. May have even been married. You can see in the photos that they were a happy family. But after the invasion and the subsequent disenfranchisement of the Japanese, he remarried the new wife.
He remarried a britannian woman who couldn't have children and then used that as an excuse to "adopt" his own children and past them off as full Britannian so that they wouldn't be discriminated against he also let their mother the one he actually loves stay as a maid so that she can be with her children we know this because the step-mum wants her gone but isn't able to get rid of her because the head of the house the father says no the step-mom knows that the Japanese maid isn't the side piece she is and that's why she hates her kallen's dad is actually kind of a giga chad but isn't able to stay in the house because he has to go to Britannia and do his Noble duties which then gives the step mom the ability to abuse the mom that's why kallen says that the step-mom is "happy that father isn't here" it's because the abuse only really happens when he isn't around of course there's still some because racism but not to the extent we see in the episode when the mother is using refrain she's probably getting kisses and cuddles from her husband and playing with her kids like the normal family they once were
@@therandomcommenter6629Is that from a radio drama or something? It makes sense, but I'm not familiar with all the Extended Universe stuff in Code Geass. And yeah, it's pretty clear that Refrain takes her back to being a happy family. She was shown moving and talking to Kallen and her brother as children. I can imagine her going back to being loved by her husband and playing with her children. Like the hot dog guy going back to his acceptance into college abroad.
This is one of my favorite episodes of the series. Something about the story of Kallen and her mom just gets me. Rewatching it and noticing how her mom is clearly acting to protect and be near her is part of it, I think. Anyway, I don't think any Britannians ally with the Black Knights. There's very little reason to. And even ones who may see the fight for justice as noble, may also not want to work with someone who killed Prince Clovis, whether they actually like him or not. And they do mention that it is easy for a Number to become an honorary citizen. Sure, still treated poorly, but a citizen. I imagine a lot of Britannians see that as more than sufficient for justice. Those who refuse to take the easy opportunity are merely idiots and only prove the Emperor's point. The poor hotdog vender gets to me in his small amount of screen time. Not only is the guy basically defenseless against some punks beating him in the middle of the park, but we see that he's apparently quite smart (got into college overseas) and yet works a menial job. He's a perfect candidate for Refrain. Of course, he would want to live in the past. When he was an aspiring student rather than a second-class citizen in his own country. Keep in mind that Lelouch may not believe everything he says to others. When talking to Kallen he was likely repeating commonly held beliefs. Some that may have a basis in reality. But not things he would entirely believe. After all, if you're trying to keep your identity hidden, you don't want to spout off as a radical to everyone you meet. Like he comments on how easy it is to attain "full citizenship". I don't think he believes that is a sufficient remedy for the people. Merely what the common Britannians think. In many ways, he is more honest as Zero.
Whenever anyone calls me self-righteous for just trying to get an actual discussion happening, while the other party is just attacking my character instead of making an argument, I respond with something along the lines of, "Well if I am that's not my intention, but I don't see it, what about what I've said or done was self-righteous?." If they can't give any evidence or respond by just doubling down I walk away because I know there's no point in talking to someone like that.
I lost it when Kallen said "The Black Knights!" in front of the class. Imagine just forgetting where you are and you said something like "All hail Lelouch!" Or "I am Zero!" And everyone just gave you strange looks and burst out laughing.
The patreon comment incorrectly referred to the drug as being based on the verb refrain, to stop oneself. However, the drug is named for the NOUN refrain, which is a repeated portion of a poem or song, or a constantly repeated comment or complaint. They are using the drug to repeat, that is, to hear again, the past they long for
Fun fact: There were plans for Kallen's brother and father. It was supposed that her father to be an important noble and her brother, Naoto, to be alive after all (the staff who worked on the series refused to confirm that he was dead, saying only that Kallen believed he was). With the confirmation of the second season, those plans were rolled for R2. However, those plans focused on Kallen's family were scrapped.
I mean it was supposed to have 50 episode but for some reason the stupid sunrise studio didn't agree with goro taniguchi Even though the series became a huge success sensation along with death note back in 2006
I always figured Refrain was more a reference to a refrain in the sense of repetition, as in the refrain of a song. Your reliving your memories after all. plus refrain is actually latin and literally means to repeat.
Yes please. It hurts me a little that Code Geass doesn't have as high views as the other shows on this channel when they are so worth it, although I get it: it's an old anime and it belongs to the mecha genre, even if that's not the most important thing. Many people are prejudiced towards oriental animation and there are fans within the anime community who avoid mecha. This anime is fantastic, despite its flaws, and deserves love. At least Kenny and Montana like it and will continue to react to it. For our part, let us feel lucky that we know this great story.
41:00 that patron statement is wrong, from what I remember Light never killed people who got convicted for drug possession, he killed people for murder, sexual assault or who opposed him, with the exception that I remember being the guy from ep5 who had sexual assault charges.
The word "Refrain" has more than one meaning. "To keep oneself from doing something" is only the verb version of the word. It's also a noun that means "a comment or statement that is often repeated" (e.g. A common refrain among teachers these days is that students are more wild than they used to be). Colloquially, a refrain is often a callback to something from the past, not just any old thing that gets repeated. I've always believed the drug was called refrain because it allows people to repeat their past over and over, as a reprieve from normal life.
Although the characters themselves can tell who is britannian and who's japanese by looking at each other's face, we can't do it as easily. Wild hair colors like pink and green are more common in britannians/europeans, while most japoneses have brown or black hair, though some japanese have colored hair too. Another hint is that white britannians are a bit more fair of complexion than the japanese, for instance if you pay attention to Lelouch and Suzaku, you'll see the different in skin tone. Though in anime they always draw the female characters with a more lighter skin than male characters, so there's also that, but if you compare a white britannian girl with a japanese girl, it's likely you'll be able to notice that the britannian girl is a bit more whiter in skin, same as britannian men and japanese men, the brits would have some consistency in having a bit more whiter skin, around as light-skinned or a little bit whiter than japanese girls. And of course, the britannians of african descent are easy to identify as they have dark skin.
The diference between Lelouch and Light is that Lulu never claim to be “Justice or a god”. Lelouch knows he is evil but a necesary evil to destroyed the bigger evil that is Britannia and his tyranical government.
I do have a response to being called self righteous. "Will is the best judge of a sentient being, the will change reality around you and enforce that will on others." "Ever bought the last pack of cookies off the shelf? Ever thought of how that affected other people? No, so don't call me self righteous, cause you are too, I just want more."
I just want to point out that the intro waiting time is absolutely horrendously loud compared to the whole video. Took me another blast of my ears to finally say something tho.
Don't worry about the view count guys😊. The last episode of code geass season 2 episode 25 (finale) will have get an insane number of views. Most people just watch the ending reactions because that's the big deal about code geass. The ending of code geass will be one of your most viewed videos trust me
bot account views gone finally thanks to youtube workers hard work i am from discord people never become lets react members they just bot accounts just one purpose for cheating cheaters make massive damage this channel 11 k regular viewers watching all show regardless thats why numbers not increase massively you just saying they wast of time entire year just for final episode for this show cheaters try again increase views using bot accounts but this time youtube keep eye of them cheating not changing too much 100 live viewers plus regular 10k watchers for all shows thats it
That's actually a clever comment. You're already wearing a mask, he would know. They're literally in the exact same position pretending to be loyal citizens while undermining the nation. This is my favourite scene a pretty girl tries to throw herself at him and he's just obsessing over his friend who happens to be a boy and does not notice her. CC really is just Lalah Sune from Gundam she says a lot of truisms but says them in such a way that makes it sound more profound than it is. Suzaku is ridiculous. Everything he says about the black knights and self righteous gratification can be said about literally anyone who thinks their right which is just about everyone including HIM. What standards are they using how do they decide what's right and wrong he asks of those fighting the power but not the power itself. The death note code geass comparison is still so wrong. More people need to watch the original Gundam series. Light uses his power to reinforce the status quo and Lelouch uses it to overthrow it.
Suzaku is talking about himself. The point is that he is a hypocrite and he knows that and keeps doubling down on this fake crusade because he can't overcome his own guilt. Which is why he harshly criticizes the black knights because what he did can't be for nothing... right?" And then he proceeds to put himself in harms way, because death is the only redeemption.
@@pimentx3253 I know I've seen the series and none of that contradicts what I've said it just elaborates on where it comes from. He still constantly expresses pro establishment beliefs. I know it comes from his traumatic past but that still comes out in the form of being a quisling and knowing it comes from his past really doesn't make him that much better. Thanks anyway
If I'm not mistaken, the only reason Kallen's father had any intimate relationship with Kalin's mother was because his Britannian wife can't bear children. I'm not sure if Kalin and Naoto were half-siblings thiough.
The self rightous gratification comment by Suzaku really makes him seem like a hypocrite. Hes the one going along with genocide and mass murder and he justifies it by saying hes gonna change things from within. There is no chance that would ever work seeing as how hes going along with it with the end goal being oh i can make them stop murdering thousands on a whim if i get higher up. Which makes the comment by Lelouch about getting caught up in red tape and bureaucracy hit even harder. Even if he got higher up all hes gonna run into is even more corruption and more resistance to what hes trying to do. Then he justifies is by saying oh well things will change but I'm gonna go along with everything thats messed up about the Britannian Empire until i get there. It's frustrating that nobody calls out how blatantly idiotic Suzaku can be
In regards to Milly (the student council president) I'm not sure if you guys have noticed it yet because it has been mentioned a couple times but not only is her father the Principal of Ashford Academy her last name is Ashford, so her full name is Milly Ashford. She's a noble and she was the one who convinced her father to let Lelouch and Nunnaly live on school grounds. She's genuinely a good person so she's not the one to watch out for. She looks out for everybody on the student council
please stop comparing LeLouch to Light😂 they’re nothing alike you’ll see what I mean as you learn more about LeLouch he is so much more well written, his backstory and real motives to what he’s doing is so tragic, and the entire time no matter how far he goes you can’t help but root for him once you find out his whole story
I believe comparing them is actually not that bad. Lelouch and Light are equally well written, but they are very different people. The similarity is the setup and a few of their ideologies, and it's interesting to see how they approach things differently as the series goes on.
Nah I wouldn't call Light that well written. He's legit a serial killer justifying his actions by hiding behind a sense of justice that's twisted. Lelouch isn't even close to that. There's layers to his character and everything he does serves a purpose. Also Light never feels bad about what he does. Lelouch does
As I've said before, the only reason Suzaku's goals make any progress is because of the presence of Zero. Without Zero, he never would have been allowed to use the Lancelot Frame, he never would have met Euphemia, and he never would have gained the trust and respect of any of his higher ups. In order to achieve his goals, he needed the catalyst that Zero provided but Zero could achieve his goals much more easily without Suzaku getting in the way.
Don't disrespect Lelouch like that. Light sucks in comparison. Lelouch has too much good humanity, unlike Light who it is a psycopath monster like Eren.
Lelouch: Kallen don't! Don't you remember the old rhyme? 5s have lives, 4s have chores, 3s have fleas, 2s have blues, and 11s don't get a rhyme because they're garbage!
This has always been my least favorite episode of Code Geass. Not because it's bad. I don't think there's such thing as a bad Code Geass episode. It's just... It makes me REALLY uncomfortable, on a personal level. I've never really experienced anything like Kallen does with her mother... But STILL. I don't know how else to explain it.
Ah yes, i had forgotten how much of a waste of animation Suzaku was during the show :'D Deluded naivety is always dangerous when in the hands of the generic "hero" type character..
I love you guys so much and I would like to share this with you. And you can take it however you would like. The condemnation is this that everyone has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. But this is the gospel which means the good news. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life. And the only way to be saved is to believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord. Believe that he died and was raised on the third day by God the father. Ask him to receive the holy Spirit. Repent from your sins (which means turn away). And be baptized in the name of the father son and the Holy Spirit. God bless you and have a good day. 🙏 John 3:16

Calling a narcotic "refrain" is very very clever. In poetry, refrain is the section that repeats, always coming back to it.
One of the very underrated aspects of this show is how they phrase things and it goes over you’re head until later.
The word "refrain" is a contronym, also known as an auto-antonym. A contronym is a word that has two meanings that are opposite to each other. In this case, "refrain" can mean both "to stop doing something" and "to repeat something."
When used as a verb, "refrain" typically means to stop oneself from doing something or to hold back from an action.
The worst part is Lelouch and Kallen didn't even buy his hot dogs in the end

@@SubzeroBlack68 They can't be used as pieces if no one knows they are alive

@@In-The-Zone But she IS scheming ^^
Her dad is also the principal of the academy which is how that all came about
I think Lelouch's comments about the hot dog guy are at least partially about keeping up his persona of the aloof, uninterested student who has no real stake in the fight.
“Discrimination against the numbers is our national policy “ A certain princess 😂.
Since the Japanese lost the war only 7 years ago, I believe Kallen was part of 1 big happy family until being Japanese suddenly became a sin and the parents were either forced to separate or it was decided by the two of them so the kids could live good lives.
Yeah, that's my read. That's how their family enjoyed the benefits they did _before_ the war. Kallen's mom wasn't the sidepiece, her stepmom was.

Once you choose to fight back you will have to keep fighting or lose everything.
i never thought the incident with hotdog guy was lelouch's actual beliefs, its just to throw off kallen from connecting him to zero
Yep. And Kallen's dad actually wanting _that_ family is why Mrs. Stadfeld can't simply kick Kallen's mom out. Naturally, she _hates_ her for that.
Let’s be real if there was a drug like that we’ll be done for who doesn’t want to go back to a time where they were truly happy
Kenny is forgetting that kallen was born before the war and Japan was still free then.
I love this episode because it slowly builds up the Black Knights and the episode focuses on Kallen. Soon they will see why she is one of Lelouchs best assets.
One of his best friends and allies as well. "Asset" doesn't really suit his character. Sounds more like Light than Lelouch when you put it like that.
I wouldn't call her an asset. She's a willing participant who is allowed to question things. Calling her an asset makes her sound like she's one of Lights women who he uses like tools and then throws away
That “Kenny” had a very similar vibe to “Holden Thomas Hardman”. 24:25
It's easy to see how she would think, "she's clinging onto some old lover that jilted her." In fact, some of that anger may also be towards her dad, depending on the full context.
the last scene of this episode still gets to me, with the two of them finally having a genuine moment together 🥺
Lelouch does an amazing job at keeping his double life hidden
My interpretation of his thoughts on the positives of Britannia and getting slapped is his way of ensuring kallen does not suspect him of having the same double life.
@@LeftyPlaat Yep. Hard to imagine that the guy who sees little to complain about with the current system is leading a small rebellion to destroy it. Not like she knows who he really is, either.

(The world created by Britannia prevents Lelouch and Kallen from living the life they want with his sister and her mother respectively.)
In one episode, the script manages to create a fascinatingly complex relationship between Kallen and her mother.
Every time he rewinds I look at her face 😂
Kenny dont you think that if CC would somehow manifest in Lulu's proximity then she couldnt for example talk with Nunaly long time before he get home?
Let's react more like Let's go!!! Thank you for another great reaction, enjoying this series very much, also 10:44 that background music still fire 🔥

Like and Comment people. I'm still in shock how episode 1 is at 87k views and 3.4k comments. we need to continue the enthusiasm we started
Agreed, Code geass is an iconic show, and the momentum should continue, but I'm enjoying seeing their reactions.
@@andreay9935 right on sis
2 more episodes to see them start questioning life😭😭
30:49 Very interesting that you would say this, in time you'll see why
All hail Lelouch!
13:25 Once Area 11 has been liberated, Britannia will fall shortly after. Now…how do I get down from here?
5:17 Hah, agent Cooper solves the case. Deserves a damn fine cup of coffee.
Montanas hair is so beautiful. Love the new look
24:24 omg 😂
It makes the question he asks somebody later on really make you see his viewpoint on his own role in the whole thing
DO NOT UNDERRESITMATE JEREMIAH "ORANGE" GOTTWALD! HE SHALL BE THE EMPEROR OF THE WHOLE WORLD! Just you wait
24:27 👌Reaction
Requesting a Lelouch gets slapped counter please 😂
24:26 *got* me 🤣🤣🤣
All hail Lulu🐶
I do have a response to being called self righteous.
"Will is the best judge of a sentient being, the will change reality around you and enforce that will on others."
"Ever bought the last pack of cookies off the shelf? Ever thought of how that affected other people? No, so don't call me self righteous, cause you are too, I just want more."
KENNY!? Y'all should at the end of the series do a smash or pass video on the philosophical quotes from this show... Idk just sounded fun... Anyway.
i love you two!
26:38 Fun fact: they’re not.
you can meet the knight of rounds in season 2
"Been there" 😂😂
I just want to point out that the intro waiting time is absolutely horrendously loud compared to the whole video. Took me another blast of my ears to finally say something tho.
Title says episode 8, while it is actually episode 9
Don't worry about the view count guys😊. The last episode of code geass season 2 episode 25 (finale) will have get an insane number of views. Most people just watch the ending reactions because that's the big deal about code geass. The ending of code geass will be one of your most viewed videos trust me
bot account views gone finally thanks to youtube workers hard work i am from discord people never become lets react members they just bot accounts just one purpose for cheating cheaters make massive damage this channel 11 k regular viewers watching all show regardless thats why numbers not increase massively you just saying they wast of time entire year just for final episode for this show cheaters try again increase views using bot accounts but this time youtube keep eye of them cheating not changing too much 100 live viewers plus regular 10k watchers for all shows thats it
We may not have to wait until that point. Episode 22 also attracts a lot of viewers because of the big event that happens there.
the new hair is great Montana 👐
24:20 LOL
CC gives government experiment vibes.
Almost time for Nina x Table-kun ❤😂😂
32:06 ...... US justice system in a nutshell
haha he called Lelouche Light
40:00 Ah yes, our favorite protagonist, Light Lamperouge 😆
The intro, is indeed, slightly different
ye
Thank god, no more cee cee, you put a C2 in the intro. Glad patreon members set you straight x.x
GURREN LAGANN!!!
Montana isn’t blonde?😮
so just know that i know people compair it to death note. But death note came out after code geass
She looks out for everybody on the student council
goooo
please stop comparing LeLouch to Light😂 they’re nothing alike you’ll see what I mean as you learn more about LeLouch he is so much more well written, his backstory and real motives to what he’s doing is so tragic, and the entire time no matter how far he goes you can’t help but root for him once you find out his whole story
I believe comparing them is actually not that bad. Lelouch and Light are equally well written, but they are very different people. The similarity is the setup and a few of their ideologies, and it's interesting to see how they approach things differently as the series goes on.
@@trackernivrig their ideology is similar but that’s ab it, and light is well written but NO WHERE NEAR the same level as LeLouch, not even close.
Should give CodeMent a try.
Don't disrespect Lelouch like that.
Light sucks in comparison.
Lelouch has too much good humanity, unlike Light who it is a psycopath monster like Eren.
suzaku ruining everything and lelouch’s non-athleticism annoyed me this whole show
Lelouch: Kallen don't! Don't you remember the old rhyme? 5s have lives, 4s have chores, 3s have fleas, 2s have blues, and 11s don't get a rhyme because they're garbage!
I love democracy
This has always been my least favorite episode of Code Geass. Not because it's bad. I don't think there's such thing as a bad Code Geass episode. It's just... It makes me REALLY uncomfortable, on a personal level. I've never really experienced anything like Kallen does with her mother... But STILL. I don't know how else to explain it.
Ah yes, i had forgotten how much of a waste of animation Suzaku was during the show :'D
Deluded naivety is always dangerous when in the hands of the generic "hero" type character..
Donald trump Barack Obama Joe Biden
🙏 John 3:16
Such a waste of time, even if anyone was susceptible to this wall of nothing, do you really think a comment section on an anime show is the place people want that or do you just love wasting space?

@@unknowndane4754 It's mind-boggling when people respond so hatefully to something that's clearly coming from a place of love. This is a complete stranger you accused of wasting space - wow! It's not a waste of time to try to help your brothers. By the way, the world does not revolve around what you want or your desires; often times what we want isn't what we need, or even ethical. The way you responded only confirms that your 'sins' have taken hold - otherwise you would have said thank you and moved on or just scroll in the first place.
Anyways, I forgot the verse exactly but Christ is specifically for those who are lost - so in a way you confirmed that OP is doing the right thing.
