We must remember Zero lost against Cornillia because his troops were not following his orders. By giving them this ultimatum he makes it clear, you have no choice but to follow and believe in my leadership in order to survive. He cannot have a repeat of the last battle. With this he will clear his objective of creating his army, his nation as opposed to just rounding up a band of terrorists.

I love how the dialogue in Code Geass is part of how they show how the world is. Just hearing the Britannian's comments about the Japanese shows their midnset on how they think of them and how they would deal with them. Also, Nina being into Euphy is being shown now. Something that seems small would become important later.

Little is said about the questionable acts that Lelouch did in this episode with his own army. Lelouch leads the Black Knights to the Narita Mountains where he knows Cornelia will be, with the intention of capturing her and interrogating her about her mother's murder (don't forget that Clovis told Lelouch before he died that she and Schneizel must have information). But instead of him telling his men the real reason they're going to Narita (that they are going to fight Britannia to capture Cornelia), Lelouch tells them they're going for a hike, which they take to be a training session. By this plot point, Zero and the Black Knights had faced terrorists, corrupt politicians, abusive soldiers, abusive corporations, and crime syndicates (according to Kallen in the last episode). That is, they hadn't faced Britannia. This was going to be their first battle, so the Black Knights found out that they were going to face Cornelia's army right there, just a few minutes after the confrontation took place. For added finishing touch, Zero leads his troops to a point where they are surrounded by Cornelia's Sutherlands. In other words, he deliberately dragged them into a blind alley, taking advantage of their ignorance. There was no reason to be dishonest with them. There was no reason to put them between a rock and a hard place. But that's how the situation came about because Lelouch mistrusts people (and likes to be in control). I can't blame Ohgi for thinking Zero is suspect for hiding things. Not just his identity and the shady way he led them into that situation, but also because he turned off his radio. There are many strange attitudes that undoubtedly attract attention.
Something that I like about Lelouch (and that makes another difference with Light Yagami) is that he is very aware of himself and his actions. From the point of view of the methods, the Black Knights are terrorists just like the rest of the rebel groups that fight against Britannia and Lelouch understands that and the importance of gaining the support of the popular sector (to get all the benefits). As Megamind would say: the difference between a villain and a supervillain (or, in this case, between a terrorist and a defender of justice) is the presentation. Hence, Zero performed his two miracles in front of a television camera. After all, if you're going to start a rebellion, your movement needs to be popular and politicians always target the most disadvantaged groups (like the Elevens) and convince them that his fight is everyone's fight. I like that in the English dub translation he says: "everyone loves heroes, and what better hero than a knight?", since it sums it all up: in that conversation he has with CC at the beginning of this episode, Lelouch is essentially admitting that he is taking advantage of the causes of justice and freedom to further his own agenda. He understands that it's dirty and bad, but he does it because he must. What can we learn from this? That Lelouch is a politician.
Here we have the introduction to Guren. Honestly, I hadn't realized that Lancelot had green eyes like Suzaku until Montana mentioned it. The same thing happens with the Guren and Kallen (both have blue eyes), although I had already noticed it. Guren and Lancelot bear a physical resemblance to Suzaku and Kallen respectively, but also reflect their particular fighting styles. Lancelot is fast, flexible and handles different weapons (swords, shield, rifles...). It's a robotic Knight who can combat with weapons and melee. Guren has close-range weapons, forcing it to get closer to the enemy to fight him. It's a close combat unit with an aggressive, direct and opportunistic attack style, which implies taking more risks (I would say that the Guren is a double-edged sword: it can deal as much damage as it can receive it). I'm sure Lelouch gave the Guren to Kallen not only because he recognizes her ability and her loyalty to him, but because he believes that an personal reason will give her a higher motivation to fight just like him (neither Lelouch nor we know the motivations of the other Black Knights, only Kallen's and we know that her reason for fighting is quite personal).

Well lelouch always have hid the details of the operation from the black knights tho it seems more cruel in this ep but the same can be said for other moments too. It is his basic nature to have full control of the board and this wasn't the first time either. The suzaku rescue mission and the establishment of black knights cam before this. Also this wasn't the last time either, Be it the saz, the order or the suicide bomb one. Not to forget the Zero episode.
Abusing the trust of others while not trusting is how he is from when he was a kid(if you have listened to the drama cds Or whatever you can see this in his childhood too). This only became worse from then because he learnt it the hard way. The recent incident being the "Attack Cornellia" where he was abandoned and suffered a L bcoz of lack of trust this establishing the black knights in which he can act like he acts while increasing the success rate by misusing their trusts. He likes to put his men in the "chose your hell" situation and forcing others to be his puppet but the likeable part about lelouch despite all this scumbaggy methods is he is aware of this and acts responsible. He always reminds me of erwin-- scummy and selfish but responsible and brave.
To summarize lelouch is naturally like that and this wasn't the first nor the last time he did something 'questinable' like this. Also that was the only way forward otherwise no one will go along with his plans even if a win is guaranteed bcoz most of their major missions in any normal circumstances would seem impossible or too cruel.

"In other words, he deliberately dragged them into a blind alley, taking advantage of their ignorance. There was no reason to be dishonest with them. There was no reason to put them between a rock and a hard place. But that's how the situation came about because Lelouch mistrusts people (and likes to be in control)."
Putting aside Lelouch's mistrust for people, I'd disagree on there being absolutely no reason to be dishonest with the Black Knights and putting them in that situation, as you said. It may not be totally apt of me to compare an anime to real life, but morale is a fickle thing in reality during times of war. One moment, soldiers can be motivated to win, the next, it can turn towards feelings of fear. This is true even for well-trained professional soldiers, to say nothing of a ragtag insurgency group.
For men and women who do not know him well, nor have experienced his "miracles" in actual battle (outside of the smaller situations, as you mentioned), their fears can potentially get the better of them and they might choose to back out before the operation. Even if they had won some manner of victories, they can still easily fall prey to base human emotions at a whim and it takes a lot to reign in people to fight under you.
Think of how difficult it is for management in a workplace to motivate their employees, balancing against their discontent in the work environment. Now, think about managing soldiers or fighters who you are telling to put their lives at risk, take the lives of other human beings, and for uncertain gains. Unfortunately, the reality is that great generals throughout history have often had to gaslight and use psychological trickery or "persuasion;" their own charisma, as it were, to get soldiers to obey their commands and do what needs to be done. It may be scummy, but it minimizes the losses on your side in the end.
When put in a situation where there is no escape and confronted with their death, people can turn into savage creatures who will do anything to survive. This psychological phenomena was recorded as far back as Sun Tzu and made use of by many commanders in the past. When you really think about it, the forces Lelouch is dealing with are mostly untrained, have little actual experience in battle, and have vague goals on restoring Japan, yet there is much uncertainty in those final objectives.
To motivate people like that to achieve victories against an overwhelming and oppressive enemy, you do have to manipulate them into fighting where, otherwise, they would flee and bail before the battle has even begun. I'm not defending his actions as just or noble by any means, they're terrible and many generals in history are terrible people. However, this is how warfare works; those who are willing to do anything to win have a much greater chance at it than those who cling to idealistic feelings of honour and integrity.

@@doritofeeshexactly. The black knight cell are not filled with military disciplined personell. Most of them are ordinary people who have took up arms to fight against Britannia. It's very hard to push them into their first ever dangerous battle without some "persuasion". If leoluch was commanding like the JLF it would be easier since they have seen battle. This was leoluch way of getting that first blood experience they needed for the future.

@@lloydter Except for you know... being able to convince the black knights to agree to a super dangerous gamble against a poweful opponent they never faced it. Lelouch is scummy, he is a machiavellian, and he will sacrifice people to achieve his goal, but the only reason why he delibarated lied to then is because he thought it was impossible to convince then to do in the first place. It doesn't make sense to suggest he thought to himself "I could easily convince then of this, but instead I will put in then in a situation where they have no choice but to go along with what I want in a super risky plan I don't even know it will work and I can also die here." It's not about empathy, or not "trusting people" it's about being able to read what those people would go far at this point in this story. Most of if them have no military traning/background, and this words alone might not've been enough to convince them.

What's something great about this anime is symbolism and meanings that are almost everywhere hidden here.
Since the beginning we know that chess are symbols for Lelouch as a King and now in this episode we get who's the queen for the Lelouch and it's of course Kallen with Guren Mark II.
Moreover with limited forces he pinpointed Cornelia Guard and her whole army is worthless in such situation. It's like a match in chess where in the beginning a good player checks the king and no pawns and other pieces can move becuase King is in danger. That's realy briliant and that's the best of this show, because almost everything here is unbelievably smart and briliant, just like in chess game between two good players.
Furthermore one of the main issues in this show is the fact that if Lelouch treats his comrades like pawns or maybe he cares about them like a true friend? This topic was clearly shown in this episode during a quarrel between Tamaki and Zero and it will be very important till the end of this aweseome series.
Whatsmore this episode clearly shows us what is the favourite Lelouch's strategy in the battle - the usage of environment on his own beneficial to turn sides of the battle. The author of this series is pure genius as this tactic will be used many times and always will be shown in completely different situation and in another scales. This also proves that this show is amazing and I can't wait to see your reaction for next episodes. :)

So without getting into a ton of techno babble or spoiler related content, effectively her gauntlet works by generating an extreme amount of radiation/heat at very short ranges. (Think basically a few feet past the dot at the center of the gauntlet). What happened with the mountain was they planted what were effectively heat based lightning rods into the earth at various points (which gave zero a variety of angles from which to cause the avalanch in case the britannians clumped up elsewhere on the mtn.) and then poured a massive amount of heat in a short time into the water reserve within the mtn. This coupled with the fact that there was no open air access made it rapidly expand and caused the mountain to basically explode in a chosen direction.
For her combat with the knightmares, it basically is overloading the mostly metal suits with a ton of heat quickly, causing everything to expand and eventually igniting the fuel source they use 'sakuradite' which causes the suit to explode from the inside out. (Why this doesn't noteably damage her suit being like 20 feet away from another one going up into a ball of fire is a bit less clear, but I assume it's just the 'rule of cool' stuff)

First of all, there is an error in the title. It is spelled "Guren" (with just an "r").
    Second...
Fun fact: Jeremiah was supposed to die while Kallen "cooked him" inside his Knightmare with the Guren's claw. But the character became so popular that Sunrise decided to save him. That would explain why Jeremiah's (interesting) background is in the supplementary material and not in the series. The abrupt change in his narrative arc is noticeable.
I also read somewhere that Jeremiah was the favorite character of Goro Taniguchi (director and one of the creators of Code Geass), but I'm not so sure about this. What I do know is that Jeremiah completed the top 5 favorite characters (from Code Geass) of the Japanese audience in a survey conducted this year. He is the most loved supporting character.

The Guren II is an unexpectedly advanced unit, similar to the Zero, which I believe has been confirmed to be the name sake of the character. Just like Cornelia underestimated Japan's nightmare abilities, the U.S. equally underestimated their ability to cross the sea by air. And just as the commander of the battle regretted Pearl Harbor almost immediately, Lelouch will also experience repercussions from this battle that he regrets.
There are more parallels as the series goes on to WWII as well. Putting my Japanese degree to good use 😂

Zero figured out about Cornelia's attack from a Brittanian informant. That was what Ohgi was talking about when they got the new knightmares. Now... who happened to mention an operation in Narita to a disgruntled media persona?
Also when Milley refers to a time when her family had the power to arrangement a meeting with a Princess she means when Lelouch's mother was alive. Being BFFs with the empress gave you quite a bit of reach in Britannian inner circles.

Wait... I'm not familiar with the most English VAs, but is Cornelia's voice the same as Riza Hawkeye in FMAB..?
She reminded me so much of 'It was a liieeee...' at some points... 😂
But then sometimes it's clearly a different tone... I'm not sure.

    • @AlicentviBritannia
      @AlicentviBritannia Рік тому

No, Riza Hawkeye is played by Colleen Clinkenbeard while Mary Elizabeth McGlynn voices Cornelia li Britannia. But Travis Willingham, who played Roy Mustang, voices Andreas Darlton, the leader of the Glaston Knights, Cornelia's elite guard.

Ok, don't know if you'll read this but two things to clear :
    - Taniguchi, Code Geass director mentioned that although not being told in the series, Nina had a traumatic event when thugs in a japanese ghetto asaulted her, and that's why she is scared of them. She is traumatized, and resents hence.
    - Numbers is the term for all second-rate subjects within a domain ruled by Brittania. The people from alliances like the EU or the Chinese Federation are called by nationality. For example, french or chinese.

I'm not sure if you've been made aware, but Nina isn't just racist. She was abused by some Japanese as a child. That's part of her phobia.
As for Millie, I'm not sure this has been made clear, her family is nobility. They actually were aligned with Lelouch's mom. And she knows he is a Prince. They've been actively hiding Lelouch and Nunally.

The Guren Mk II is a Japanese made Knightmare that was designed by an Indian woman with backing from India itself. As for how it compares to the Lancelot? Wait and see.
Sure was a lot of collateral damage this episode. All well. Not like that will be important.

I just picked up something interesting in this episode I wanna point out, though it is a slight spoiler since I'm drawing conclusions from information we've yet to see. Read with caution.
Lelouch specifically mentions the plan to go to Narita when he hears the Black Knights react negatively to the idea of letting a Britannian join their ranks. Why such a change of topic? I think Lelouch views these two events as related. He's already been considering Diethard's application, anticipating pushback from his knights. Taking into consideration his previous failure at the hands of Cornelia, he knows how important it is that his troops trust him, and trying to convince them to allow Britannians into their order right now would not help his cause. Perhaps he views the battle of Narita as the perfect opportunity to boost troop morale, to gain more Japanese allies, and to gain the trust of his own knights he desperately needs before he can talk about letting Britannians join their side.
But even more specifically, I think that scene is there to plant the idea in our minds that the Black Knights would not trust Zero if they knew he is Britannian, and it's something he'd like to address before it becomes a problem.

That...That is a form of racism. Being scared of an entire group of people is a form of prejudice.
Her backstory, while giving good reason, does not excuse her racist mentality. If a random marginalized group of people killed my entire family, and instead of blaming the individuals, I developed a fear of the entire race that they come from due to indoctrination...Then that is still considered a form of racism.

So when talking about Lelouch forcing them into the fight, I want to bring up what the Black Knight girl (Inoue) says.
    "We can't beat Britannia"
The Japense have been getting stomped by Britannia for years now, they don't think they CAN win. The terrorism is about trying to make Britannia also lose, not so they can win. That is why Lelouch lied to them, he needs to prove to them they can win because they simply can't imagine that is possible right now.
It's elaborated on as the series goes on but there's a reason in Episode 2 Kallen obeyed Lelouch because he said "you will win". Lelouch is the only one on Japan's side actually focused on winning right now and he is forcing them to also think about it.
