Who’s ready for a rear-wheel-drive supercar DRAG RACE?!
Mat’s lining up in the McLaren 600LT and he’s going head-to-head against a Ferrari 812 Superfast!
Now on the face of it, you might think this is pretty one-sided. After all, the McLaren is powered by a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 that can produce 600hp & 620Nm, while the Ferrari’s packing a 6.5-litre V12 that puts down 800hp & 720Nm!
But power output isn’t everything in this race… You see, the Ferrari’s also pretty heavy, tipping the scales at 1,800kg. And as for the McLaren? Well, it’s much lighter, weighing in at 1,356kg!
So how do you think it’ll play out - will the lightweight McLaren snatch it? Or will the Ferrari’s V12 push it to victory? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

Matt, we would like for you to display the times of 1/4 mile in every drag attempt, because some of them are really close and we would like to see what times you get on those races as well, and not only in the final drag race. Everybody's talking about adding all the drag times for each race but more interesting than that is trap speed, which shows which car truly accelerates quicker. ET is more a function of grip/drivetrain layout so it would be great to see trap speeds added...but I doubt it
The one stat you missed from the stats screen is power to weight ratio 442 BHP/ton for Mclaren and 444 BHP / ton for the Ferrari which explains the closeness of the drag race

Yup. And the McLaren is turbocharged. And the Ferrari still completely gapped it. That’s why I don’t believe it weighs 1,800kg.
Maybe it doesn’t weigh the claimed 1,630kg curb, but the roll race should’ve been a lot closer at 1,800kg. I’d estimate 1,700kg or thereabouts.

For a heavy front engine V12 RWD GT, that 812 launches so well.
FRONT FUCKING MID ENGINED WHATS WRONG WITH YOU miss correcting the drive strain is front mid engined like a mid engined car front mid is not the same as front it’s mid engined behind the front wheels so it launches better than some rear mid cars but your not a Ferrari fan if you don’t know about how every v12 is planted behind the front axle

You basicly have a 100-200 in the rolling race they just can add a dragtimer on the roll race.
And they need to be in the right gear at 50mph. 3k rpm on the McLaren means the turbos aren’t spooled

@@user-zq4et6ig8j I wanna see regular diesel cars, because they are (unlike 95% of the cars shown here) atleast realistically affordable, there more relatable, therefore more meaningful for the average viewer. Them being banned in a few years have nothing to do with me wanting to see drag races. And people keep buying them, because a diesel is still the most over-all efficient way of long-distance travel and the best mix of power, efficiency, affordability and reliability.

@@kerrinmarr9204 if by “equally powered” you mean overpowered mclarens, then yes you’re right. Virtually every single mclaren has understated HP, which is actually closer to the WHP as opposed to brake horsepower (which is what most manufacturers use to define HP). Many Mclarens have been put on the dyno and are found to have nearly 100 more hp than what Mclaren say. The perfect example is the Mclaren 765, which has around 850-875 HP. Even the 720s is probably about 780 HP, and yet it’s only very slightly faster than the 710 hp F8 tributo in a straight line. It’s good that Mclaren are “overdelivering,” however it’s a more of a marketing strategy from their standpoint in an attempt to appear as though they’re beating their equally powered competition when in reality they are a weight class above.

McLaren lie about their power. As much as I love them. The 765LT has made 770-780hp on dyno’s. That is 870bhp+ at the crank, very much 918 territory.
The F8 Tributo, 488 Pista and 720S are all claimed to have 710bhp (720PS). DragTimes dynoed the 720S, Pista and GT. Ford said the car has a drivetrain loss of 11% and it should be a similar loss for a similar kind of car, which the Pista and 720S are, being RWD mid-engined supercars with 7-speed dual clutch gearboxes. So when he applied the 11%, both the GT and Pista made close to what was claimed. But not the McLaren.
The GT horsepower was accurate. The Pista wheel horsepower was equivalent to 721bhp at the crank, which is just 11bhp more than claimed. Not significant. The 720S is claimed at the same horsepower as the Pista, yet made much more at the wheels, and resulted in 786bhp (797PS) at the crank.
That is an 800hp car, which is also much lighter. And though it is quicker, the Pista and Tributo do well to keep up with it. Makes you wonder what would actually happen if the McLaren made the same power as the two…
So McLaren lie about horsepower. But ironically and simultaneously, Ferrari lie about their weight.

Your comment also lacks context. It’s like me saying most Ferrari’s would win compared to a McLaren of a similar weight. You can’t simply take power as the be all and end all, which is what your comment does.
But given the stats in the video, the cars are pretty evenly matched in terms of power to weight ratio:
600LT = 1,356kg/600PS = 2.26kg/PS
812 Superfast = 1,800kg/800PS = 2.25kg/PS
But even then, many more factors come into play, such as torque, torque to weight, naturally aspirated vs forced induction, downforce, drag, aerodynamics, transmission, gearing, etc.

My 600lt performed well, I also have a 812SF and they are barely comparable in real world use. The 600lt, corner to corner on B roads, is the quickest thing I own by some distance.

I still really like that 600LT. I raced one through the twisties vs my 2016 GTR Blk Ed with the Alpha-7 pck and we had a blast. Awesome car.

Mat, one thing REALLY missing in this videos. Showing the speedometer. Easy fix, a Go-Pro and you can have cut that out put it somehwere on the screen.... Now that would give this Drag Race series a LIFT !!! :)

Matt definitely jumped it on the third. You cannot see it on the last slowmo, but his brake lights go out just a split second prior to the hand drop. The car doesnt budge until the hands are on the way down, but he definitely released the brake for launch before the drop.
They timed the slowmo clip carefully, starting the clip just after the brake lights go out.

This is a good (to me that's well matched cars) race because
firstly, HP per tonne is very similar (as mentioned by others already)
But also crucially despite being turbo the macca engine has the max power develop only in a peaky manner right near the top of the rev range like the NA Ferrari.
Usually (presumably for the sake of simplicity) only the max torque/max power figure is quoted but some engines have a much bigger range of torque (e.g. turbo S) so those two figures alone don't tell the whole story. Hence this is why cars seemingly matched by power or even power /tonne in drag races aren't often close to watch at all. The extreme case of this is of course electric cars which have torque at zero revs and thus the regular matchup based on power are extremely difficult to do against ICE cars.
