    God Speed, Dan Gurney.
    Genuinely nice man.
I was volunteering my time on the announcer stand at Ascot, during the 1984 Pacific Coast Sprint Car Nationals...We were getting ready for the 50-lap A-Main Event, and I looked to my left....and there he was.
I remembered saying, as he walked in front me....”OMG! Dan Gurney!”. No sooner than that with a smile on his face… He reached over and shook my hand.....
Someone that he never knew or met.
I can’t even write this without losing it.
    I can’t write anymore… I’m a mess.

Wow! Great interview. Holy smokes those Gurney Eagles were such cool looking race cars and then there was that Coyote of Foyt's. Great to see an interview with the both of them. Foyt and Gurney absolutely stomped that LeMans field.

The crazy thing about this "All-American" victory was that of all the Fords and Chaparrals that represented the U.S.A.....only Foyt and Gurney were the All-American Team. Fate.
    R.I.P. Dan Gurney

Blathering on...I saw Dan win Ford's only Can-Am race at Bridgehampton...saw A.J. win his 4th at Indy in '77. I admired a lot of race car drivers, being an old man, but these two were The Americans, through and through.

A time when all those Incredible cars & Creations, Gurney's Eagles, Foyt's Coyote's , Penske & McLaren, Pat Patrick & Granatilli, Vel's & Parnelli Jones, A J Watson Etc, Todays generation could careless about Racing period.... FWIW I sat in the Ford GT 40 these guys won Lemans with and it was ultra comfortable for someone my size (5' 10" 150 lbs). That said you weren't so much sitting in it as laying down the position was so reclined! Of course the car was parked in the Ford showroom at Watkins Glen at the time which is a somewhat different experience than traveling around the Lemans circuit at 240 mph!

I'd have to give some thought to it, but yes, I do believe that these two men are my two biggest racing heroes of all time? Somewhere, in a shoe box, in one of my closets, or maybe my attic, is a photo of A.J. Foyt, with his arm around my young wife, taking a photograph with her at Elkhart Lake, when he was still driving the Indy cars. (I think it was 1987?). Til this day, my wife tells everyone that A.J. Foyt is the greatest driver of all time. I agree with her, with Gurney being a possible exception? It's great, seeing them together, after all those years.

A close friend of mine in high school had an older brother who bought a Dan Gurney Boss 302 engine from Dan Gurney in 1971 believe. The engine was called the Gurney Eagle. He put this engine in a lightweight sand rail and blew the competition away drag racing this sand rail on sand at Sand Lake and other sand racing avenues.

Never got to see Dan Gurney race in person but followed F-1 a lot when I was a kid. Saw AJ win the California 250 at Hanford, Ca. Marchbank Speedway in Nov. 1968. Passed Bobby Unser and Mario Andretti for the victory. That race was written up in a book of the top ten greatest races of all time. They were nose to tail for the last 70 laps of that 1.4 mile tri-oval. I was blessed to have been there. The track no longer exists...just the memory.
A side note: This race was also the ONE and ONLY RACE a TURBINE POWERED VEHICLE EVER FINISHED! Joe Leonard finished 4th after walking away from the field in the first 70 laps. They had a bad pit stop and with Andy Granatelli frantically yelling at the officials waving his arms wildly they came out a half a lap behind the lead trio. Looked like USAC was gonna make sure that car didn't win to me. Nobody liked the silent 'whoosh' car anyway. I know I didn't. But good God was it fast.
R.I.P. Dan Gurney. You made all Americans just as proud as Ford did in the '60s with that win at Spa two weeks after your win at LeMans

Perhaps two of the greatest drivers of all time. They both proved that they could drive anything, and win, anywhere. The only American driver that I'd put up there with these two, would be Andretti. MARIO Andretti. Today, the closest we have would be Juan Pablo Montoya. We'll see if Alonso can win in all the other types of cars; it would certainly be interesting to see him on a dirt track!

Sure he would. Back then, anyway. Today? No chance, not with all the baloney going on in F1. Seriously, having your racing cars slow down because of mileage? Blasphemy! AJ was one of the all time best.

    • @MrGaryGG48
      @MrGaryGG48 2 роки тому +1

@@d.e.b.b5788 Dan, aside from being an excellent driver, was an excellent engineer, team owner, and a business man. All of that would have allowed him to succeed in F1 today if he put his mind to it. AJ was definitely an excellent driver and engineer but I'd question his ability to "bite his tongue" when dealing with the Political Correctness/PR/Sponsor crap that pervades F1 now.
The F1 rules when they were driving were basically, built to the specs for your class and keep the car pointed "that way!" They were just barely into seat belts at that time, let alone minimum fuel mileage. As has been said many times... it was really a different world!

The old Mulsanne....so nice of the French to have painted the trees (lining almost the whole straight) white like that. Just imagine what that looks like when you're tunnel-visioned to see that DB Panhard that's doing 120 mph less than you...probably like one of those old shutter-scopes. So the really sad part of this is that this kind of LeMans is over, gone, and will never exist again. It'll be just those Hot Wheels cars that all look the same travelling quietly around the track. Shame. I mean, is there really any connection between the races of this era and recent times? I mean, air conditioning, really? Power steering? Briggs Cunningham drove to 4th in a car with a minimal windshield and did 22 of the 24 hours himself. Luigi Chinetti won doing basically the same thing in a 2 liter Ferrari in 1949. Anybody today doing that?
