  • If there’s a fish that swims, Jay Siemens needs to catch it. In his new series, The Canadian Angle, Jay takes us along for the ride in search of walleye, bass, pike, musky, and everything in-between. New episodes every Friday at 11am MST.
In this episode Jay Siemens takes his dad out to Lake of the Woods to try to break the magical 41 inch mark for a Northern Pike. Jay goes through the steps of how to catch big toothy pike with big dead-baits under tip-ups.

There is one thing I know as a Canadian kid, parents taking you to “skip” school for fishing or hunting. Best classroom for kids if any age. Thanks Jay and Dad

I was watching an ice fishing video the other day and I was just bored to tears. Sitting in a dimly lit box pulling fish out of a tiny hole is probably entertaining in person but it sure makes for some lackluster video footage. The extra content on THIS ice fishing video kept me engaged. Really enjoyed all the MeatEater episodes I've seen with this host. Clearly an expert and passionate about his craft.

Absolutely awesome to see you out there with your dad. Like a lot of people have said enjoy every minute with him. Unfortunately I lost my dad 3 years ago to cancer and I wish I would have been able to spend more time with him fishing because he's the one that taught me everything about fishing. Great video is always love watching

So awesome to spend that many years making memories fishing with your dad. Mine started me on my passion for fishing and the outdoors, while he kept it pretty casual I eventually got obsessed and went on to guiding. It's a huge part of my life and identity. lead me to many amazing places and people. I always enjoyed it coming full circle and taking my dad out to teach him how to chase musky around. Unfortunately I lost my dad to Cancer at 60 years old but those memories keep him close to heart.

Pike is the most amazing fresh water fish out there, and is my all time favorite. Used to catch them in Lake Cummins just south of Ely, NV. They are invasive and have a zero release law in Nevada, and despite having poisoned off the entire lake several times, even leaving it a year and poisoning it again, they would restock the lake with rainbows and right away fishermen start pulling out 24-40” northerns! It’s just off the highway and the cut that runs up to Cave Lake, and my gosh are they tasty!!! And tough as nail! Had one in the cooler for over four hours, opened it up and it was watching my hand and intentionally tried to bite me, so they stay alive for a LONG time after being hauled out, eight hours I can personally testify to. Yeah, that Y Bone is a pain to deal with, but so worth it once cooked!!! Pretty much the same technique I was shown when I was taught to fillet them, though I’ve seen others… that were a lot more wasteful. Good fish, good food!

Had a guided fishing trip this year and bagged a Pike and a walleye....cleaned cooked up both that night. I was surprised how much I enjoyed the Pike, and dare I say, it actually might have been a slight bit better than the walleye! I agree, a firmer flesh, very mild flavor. Great cooking fish.

I really like the Okuma CBR-1000s for my iFish sets. The pike don’t seem to notice the difference between free spool and the bait feed setting on these reels, but when the wind’s blowing hard, it helps keep the line on the reel.
