    • @Dustshoe
      @Dustshoe 5 років тому +13

      ddoyle11 'riveting' is the word alright. This whole action, fight for survival no less, by the absolutely courageous crew whilst trying to fly their aircraft whilst severely wounded and disoriented, is, depicted here, more riveting than the cable car scene in Where Eagles Dare, that 1968 movie. I guess as I watched this, absorbed as I was, I imagined the struggle on board to be not dissimilar at all to that movie scene in terms of the desperation and the space whilst 'high up'. Who needs a Richard Burton or a Clint Eastwood? Your neighbour could be a walking hero, ready to respond tomorrow. Ugh! I hope I have not trivialised the experience of the crew here by describing it so. The fact is a great evil was imposed upon them but they overcame it; they surmounted it. And maybe the perpetrator will before his time realise the harm and cruelty that he did. That perhaps would put the cap on this event, if he did eventually.

      I watched a tv documentary on this years ago. I cried when they interviewed the pilots at the end. (Still getting tears recalling it). You could see at the time that they loved flying and the fact that that ability was taken away from them weighed heavy on the men.
      The fact that they did not end up killing Calloway goes to their characters as human beings. And the fact that Calloway had the gall to write Obama for a pardon goes to HIS character. After all the time he spent in prison he still thought he was in the right. Hate to say it, but he probably thought he had a chance because he was a fellow black.

    I was at work near the Memphis airport and saw this plane coming in. It was really low and rocking back and forth. I thought it was going to crash into one of the buildings along Brooks road. One wing would tip towards the ground and then it would roll and the other wing would tip towards the ground. I had no clue what was going on aboard the plane until I heard it later on the local news. It was unusually low to the ground and really loud and I also remember smelling jet fuel after it passed over. From the ground, I knew something wasn't right and thought it was in bad bad trouble.

FedEx was sophisticated even back then because Fred Smith would do live video interactions with employees to express concerns or make recommendations. Callaway phoned in and his sole purpose was to embarass Smith - except they were able to identify him by voice. He wanted to try & ruin FedEx because a fuel tank explosion would have killed thousands of workers at the Memphis Hub. This drove the elevators into flutter and one of the depleted uranium balance weights was ripped off. It was found months later in a field in AR. A further inspection revealed no other structural damage. After release from the investigation impound and elevator replacement, N306FE was returned to service. Overide pilot ??? Are you talking about that very early model slow speed crash on take off and into a forest at end of runway ??? If so, that is ancient history, and in that case, the jets control had a delay in them ( Software ), that caused the accident. The plane was going very slowly at almost zero altitude leaving the pilot little room for any error. I am sure Boeing had a few mishaps in their development stages. Worth bearing in mind too that the Airbus had far more advanced controls than the Boeings of that era, fly by wire etc, so this was new territory. As for Boeings being more sturdy in a crash, well, I would not like to be relying on that to survive !!! Is there any evidence of this sturdiness ?? It certainly does not affect Airbus planes that fly around the Globe daily, thousands of them. I would put them as equals, but understand Regional preferences and nationalism. I am sure most French people would prefer to ride in Airbuses, just as Americans would side with Boeings. Bearing in mind the large employment and benefits to each others economies, this is entirely understandable. Same would apply to Harley Davidsons for Americans, and Ducatis and Aprilias for Euros. I am from Ireland but lived in the US for two decades, so I can see both sides, and I actually worked for Coca cola when they set up their first concentrate plant in Ireland in 1973.!! Hell , I even got a personal call from the VP of Coca cola in Atlanta when I was visiting California in 1976 !!! No kidding and nice memories. Cheers

    Calloway had actually operated the same flight as the flight engineer the day prior with a different crew. Because the maximum crew day hrs, as allowed by the FAA, had been exceeded, that crew, including Calloway, were taken of this flight that they were scheduled to operate. This actually saved FedEx from an even larger castastrophe. Calloway apparently had already made plans for this attack as he was scheduled for a hearing that likely would have cost him his job. He was not under any type of indictment as mentioned in other comments. He had plans to attack the original crew he was schedule to operate with. Because he couldn't operate that flight as the engineer, he positioned himself as a jumpseater on the flight back to San Jose, Instead of just two pilots he would have to overtake, the Captain and the First Officer, he now had three pilots to overcome. Having a third person in the Flight Station increased the difficulty of achieving his goal. It also has been noted that the First Officer was a gym rat and was in terrific shape.
    The flight crew have been well taken care of by FedEx so they won't have to worry about another dime as long as they live.
    I'm a retired Navy and UPS pilot. I'm also an African American. Comments about African American pilots being affirmative action hires, thus less qualified, are way off base. Because of the high cost of flight training, most of us get our training in the military. To get your pilot wings in the military is no easy task. You'll be perfectly safe when you see us in the flight station.

I didn't get any official awards and that's fine by me. My award was staying alive and saving four peoples' lives. My two experiences and wins are my two highest accomplishments in life. Life wouldn't have meant much to me if things didn't break my way. I would have lost my father as a young man.
