Making a Pegboard-mounted Wire Dispenser

    For far too long I've been storing my wire for electronics projects in a box where they were hard to get to, and would easily get unwound and/or tangled. In this video I build a new wire dispenser to hang on my pegboard, with a few interesting (at least I think so) techniques and materials.
    The wires are held in place with an insert made from packaging foam, and the dispenser uses a new pegboard locking mechanism.

    Don't know what was better in/with this: the idea, the cleverness, the craftsmanship/skill, or the videography? Truly an amazing project, keen eye and steady hand and put together amazingly!

    Very clever. Now I know what the foam strips were for. You make good use of symmetry.

    Wow that is much better than any commercial product I have seen. I work with fine wire for jewelry and a variety of types of wire for mixed media art. Your project makes everything I have seen look very basic and dysfunctional. The dowel with the sponge foam insert is genius. Kudos.

    The foam inlay and spacer are pure genius. Thanks for the ideas.
    Linked in from your show with Izzy Swan. Good show.

      +grey Thanks, glad you enjoyed the show (and the wire dispenser). The foam has proven itself, it's been working well.

    I love videos where you are thinking to yourself what is that for i.e. The notch out of the back of the holder and then when you realise, you think that person has thought of everything. Great video.

      Awesome, I love the feeling of that "little reveal" as well. Glad that came across and you enjoyed it as much as I did.

    Really well done! This is exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for for my bench. Unfortunately I lack the tools to build it myself but maybe some day!

    That’s totally friggin awesome 👏 I wish I could bust one out but I know I’ll get lazy cut a bunch corners and won’t like the end result and just go throw Um back in “the wire spot”. 🤘

    Very elegant, Ben Brandt ! It took me a little while to figure out what the foam was for, but I really like how it turned out. The music did make me think of Angelo Badalamenti's score for Twin Peaks at time, though :)

      Thanks Bill Van Loo ...this is what happens when you save scrap packing foam and electrical conduit cutoffs... You stare at them long enough and ideas start to form :-)

      I had the same problem with the foam. “What the hell”? But like seeing a baseball getting bigger and bigger, I thought the same thing. Then it hit me.

    Love it! Don't have a need for a wire rack, but I think I may make a tape rack in a similar fashion. Thanks for posting!

    Nice project. One thing that I'd be tempted to do is instead of the little C-shaped blocks to put in the notch of the upper back corner, I'd use the notch to help hold a piece of dry-erase board across the back so you can label the type of wire at each location. Solid, or stranded, gauge, etc. Actually a dry-erase surface is probably too thin for that gap, if so shortened C-shaped blocks can be glued to the board in the correct places. (This would also help constrain the dry-erase board from slipping side-to-side...)

    Dude, nice work, but gawd. You sucked me in and lulled me with the techno beat. Great production. hahaha I'm in the midst of building a work shop and to the point that I'm hanging peg board and building shelves. Insulated sheet rocked hydronic heat unit led shop lighting, bomber bench. I'm going to be spending a good percentage of my live in here so it has to be nice.

    Very clever dowel cross-drill jig and wire grip. Any ideas on how to arrest the inertia on the spools? I have some larger spools that will over-feed and create a rat's nest.

    • @BenBrandt22
      @BenBrandt22  7 років тому +1

      Good question. I would think you'd need something putting pressure down on the spool like a brake. Probably a weight hung from a pivot point above and behind the spool, or a stick held down with a rubber band or spring.

    • @BenBrandt22
      @BenBrandt22  7 років тому

      Thanks. I don't know much about paracord or the typical paracord spools. This dispenser is admittedly a little over-complicated, but if you know anyone in your life with some woodworking skill you could probably get some help making something simple enough to suit your needs.
