This is spectacular. Just spent 30 minutes browsing online for pegboard shelves and it's RIDICULOUS how much they want to charge for these flimsy things! Your tutorial is short, sweet, to the point, well narrated, and super helpful! Can't wait to get building these!
What a fantastic video. Basically, you could make all tool holder using L hooks that people are making do french cleats. This is way more easy and simple.
Thanks for saving me hundreds of dollars. I was just about to buy Wall Control pegboards but your method of making shelves is way more flexible and convenient. Awesome!
Yeah!! Thank you for making this video. I watched and re-watched this video about 20 times so I could write everything down and copy your ideas! I have pegboard above all the work stations and was just about to drill some shelves into it…but then I came across your video! 😊
Great idea’s, great, well edited video re: peg board usage. I hate peg board, your idea’s and suggestions open a whole new thought process on how to better use the peg board. Biggest reason for disliking peg board is the junk hangers and hooks designed for peg board use. Thank you for going to the trouble of making and editing your vid. Really enjoyed watching. From Missouri
The basic shelving arrangements are very helpful and concisely explained. I had no idea pegboard was so versatile. I'm just getting started with hand-tool organization and woodworking so this no-nonsense video was a perfect start for me and has allowed me to begin simple and practical projects while actually accomplishing something. Many thanks!
Brilliant. My house has pegboard on every wall and tho there are a ton of hooks provided, I wondered if I could make better use of it - and here we are. Thanks for the idea
Using L-hooks to make custom pegboard accessories is brilliant. I used this technique to make a great shelf with a vertical support like you showed, then screwed more L-hooks on the front to hang tools from.
Hi Ben, I have an update. I have built my first storage shelf. Like the $8 pegboard tool organizer I bought at Home Depot, it holds screwdrivers. The plastic POS I bought at the store was trying to fall off the pegboard on day one. The shelf I built per the videos instruction is awesome. It's 22 inches long and can hold 24 screwdrivers. I used 6 L hooks, and that is overkill. I probably only needed 4. The shelf is rock solid. I'm now gonna build a shelf for holding rolls of tape. Then, more shelves and more pegboard. These are fun projects.
I watched this video last night and today I installed a peg board and built some of these shelves. Absolutely brilliant and easy way to get cheap functional shelves!
Thank you so much for the best pegboard idea ever. I have altered your basic idea somewhat by using 2x4 lumber instead of 1X4. I have made 7 modules so far. Hammer holders, screw driver holders, and wrench holders. My original idea that i built so far was using a scrap piece of 2x4 cut off at a 45degree angle mouted to a flat 2x4 with a soup can on it facing 45 deg. Up to hold utility knives and one to hold pencils. Basically I watch french cleat videos and adapt the L hook attachment method to the peg board. There is no limit to the ideas available. WHAT A GREAT IDEA THANKS SO MUCH
Ben, excellent video and very creative, you just gave me smart ideas, for my pegboard, I have so many wood pieces from an old Lumbar Co. in my backyard, many thanks from Ethiopia.
I just made my first of many of these shelves and it was very satisfying, the icing on the cake for my new pegboard that should have been in my life 20 years ago. Great vid, thank you.
Just a thought, but a really easy no measure way to line up the pegboard holes would be to use a sacrificial strip of pegboard as a guide for positioning the hardware pilot holes.
Hi Ben, thanks to you I have really organized my small shop space by making a number of these peg board shelves. They work and work well! I have subcribed to your channel and look forward to your other videos. Thanks for posting such good content!
I bought a bunch of Talon peg board hooks and while they attach quite well to the pegboard, they don't seem to work well as tool holders. I've now ordered the right angle screws you used and have made screw driver, nut driver holders to use that technique. Thanks for the idea.
This could complement French cleats nicely for smaller tools. Could hang pegboard sections on the cleats, though you'd need to space them out a bit to keep the hooks from hitting the cleats.
More efficient use of space for screw drivers over the commercial wire versions, Combination wrenches also benifit from the tighter spacing. I prefer 1 long peg hook for my rolls of tape however. Open up more possibilities for peg wall storage. Thanks for sharing.
Fine Video! I have learned now again to do so much better. Metal boards I like better but wooden ones have had to do for long enough. Now French Cleats are on the plan!
I have always hated peg board. I grab a tool, I get a hook. But I am thinking of giving it another try. Your ideas limit the individual hooks! I will definitely give them a try!! Thanks
This is EXACTLY what I am planning on doing! I am working on a project to use "Lean" principles in my single stall garage to use as an example for my workplace (going to do a video). I've looked all over the big box stores looking for pre made plastic/metal fixtures..but these are EXACTLY what I am looking for! Perfect idea! Got any storage ideas for power tools? I am racking my brain trying to decide how to hang/shelve my circular Saw, a reciprocating saw, and my orbital palm sander....couple drills......
Holy crap Ben, I started to reply to express the same thing. For the larger stuff like a circular saw, nothing beats French cleats! April's videos are some of the best out there for that subject, too.
Thanks Ben, I installed my pegboards yesterday in my wood shop and was looking for a way to put shelving on it, your shelving is going to be perfect 😃👍🏼
Ben these ideas are brilliant - I'm working on my garage build and these walkthroughs will really come in handy in the next few days. The narration throughout the whole video is great, keep it up man!
OK, this is the best pegboard/tool hanger video I've seen yet. I like the pegboard idea but the hangers are pretty much all cheap, look nasty and are too small. This is the way to do it!
Thanks for a good Idea. My first shelve will be straight across the bottom of my pegboard for my growing collection of clamps.... way better than trying hang them on hooks.
Hi Ben! This would be the perfect solution for my no-shelves coming with my storage container problem! The only thing is that I can't find that little chamfer tool that you were using. The only chamfer tools that I am finding are either electric or poor quality. Could you let me know where I could find one of those that you have?
That last shelf you made was really strong! great job! I was wondering if you could help me figure out how to hang drywall in my bedroom so I can utilize unused wall space. I have a small room and I want to use every inch of space I can. Thank you sir!
+Will Hill I've hung drywall before, it's not too difficult. I don't have any videos on it, but a quick UA-cam search on "how to hang drywall" will turn up lots of information to get you started.
+Will Hill Ah, I understand now... For pegboard, you need some space behind the board to allow room for the hooks to poke out the back, so the pegboard will need to be offset from the wall. Simplest way I've seen this done is that people will build a frame around the edges on the back using long strips of wood. This creates some space behind the pegboard and adds a little strength to the pegboard panel. These "framed pegboard" panels can then be hung from the wall. They'll need to be mounted well to hold weight, either in wall anchors, or better yet, studs. A French Cleat is an easy and strong way to do this. This guy did something like this: ua-cam.com/video/sOTOvBLk_YQ/v-deo.html
Follow-up: I recently put pegboard up in my garage workshop, and I just finished my first shelf based upon the L hook Model explained in this video. Thank you so much... This is going to be really helpful!
Is there a weight limit on how much that L hook can hold even with that support piece holding the shelf up? I want to be able to mount some power tools like my my saws etc
I don't know about a weight limit. I typically use lightweight items with my L hooks. For heavier stuff I might put the weight a few inches below the hook so it's more of a vertical force on the hook instead of a bending force. Another simple system I like to use for hanging heavier items is called "french cleat" ... You can find lots of videos on UA-cam about it.
Go for it! I recently tore out a section of pegboard in my basement that was 3 old pegboard scraps cobbled together, and replaced them with one big new panel... Much nicer :-)
FINALLY! A video for tool storage that doesn’t require every woodworking power tool ever made. THANK YOU!
He's Makita's #1 Enemy.
That's Funny...
I know, Right?!!! LOL So I don’t have to go buy a planer, router, table saw, track saw and band saw to hang up my screwdriver?
BEST DIY FOR US REGULAR (NOT CARPENTERS) PEOPLE I HAVE SEEN!

Excellent presentation! Easy, straight forward, and doesn't require many tools.

That's excellent claythorne01, glad you found it useful and thanks for the comment.
I've used your advice to build out my entire workshop. Thank you so much!
Never Comment on videos but this is fantastic! Well done in its simplicity but super functional
Simple and I already have most of what I need in my shed. Thank you.

Thanks for sharing, I will definitely be doing this later. Your shelves look way more stable than the metal hoops and hooks at the hardware store.
I am so glad you posted this! I want to build one of these peg boards for my husband, the shelves are simple yet so brilliant. Great tutorial
Thank you, hope it helps you on your project
Ben, excellent video and very creative, you just gave me smart ideas, for my pegboard, I have so many wood pieces from an old Lumbar Co. in my backyard, many thanks from Ethiopia.
You can also use a Gatorgrip to turn the L hooks. One of the few good uses for those.
Love the homemade tool for turning the L hooks!
The best solution on the internet. Thank you.

Great idea, an easy template, sort of like a story stick

I’ve been thinking about building a pegboard to go with the workbench I just built and your video just helped me out a Lot. Thanks for posting it.
Some simple yet great ideas! Thanks and have a blessed day.

Go for it! I recently tore out a section of pegboard in my basement that was 3 old pegboard scraps cobbled together, and replaced them with one big new panel... Much nicer :-)
Thanks for sharing many ways to make pegboard shelves. I want to make some for crafts & sewing, better way to organize & find
Great video! Building mine today.
