- PG(Perfect Grade) 1/72 scale Millennium Falcon by Bandai - Built and painted by Okay ok (me!) This model has been almost a year long process. To have a finished Millennium Falcon from the Star Wars original trilogy with this much attention to every detail is surreal. No toy can compare to this! I talk about my experience, give tips, tell you what I am glad i did and what i would do differently if i did it again.

Building right now, myself. I absolutely love this kit. Doing a lot of aftermarket cockpit and turret interior upgrades.Also revamping the lighting.

I’m just popping by to tell you this build is one of my favourite examples I’ve seen online and it’s one I look to when trying to balance panel colouring and streaks & weathering. I’ve been working on mine a LONG time and I’ve stripped the paint more than once after losing a lot of surface detail trying to get it right. The panel lining on yours isn’t too light or too heavy. And the streaks all radiate outward consistently (mind tend to look uneven and “wobbly”.). I don’t know how you managed to hold all this together without a lot more model-making experience under your belt. I would be more than content to stop trying to fix or modify the paintwork if I got to this point. I hope your kit stays with you and intact for many years to come! Thx for posting this.
thanks! It was no easy task, but worth it! Even though I was fairly new to modeling, i've got a lot of art/painting experience so that helped a lot. It's one of those labor of love projects that I didn't have to rush for a deadline but it becomes a permanent collection piece bc its personally too valuable to sell. Lots of 'work' hours

Really great work on this kit. I'm a past professional model maker by trade and, I can definitely spot experience and skill when I see it. And, many model makers as yourself have natural talent and balanced eyes for detail. Nice stuff!
Also, some of those little light leaks look pretty cool, actually. It's definitely not terrible. The only downside to all the Bandai kits being glue-less snap/friction fit (which is still fantastic and all) is that you will always have light leaks in the seams unless you cement the parts together and seal the gaps. It's just the nature of the styrene parts. But, it doesn't look bad at all.
Just awesome work, your weathering is spot on and not too over done like I've seen with other builds, the faded panel colors blend really well with the rest of the paint work and it's not covered in heavy panel lining washes which they didn't use on the model in the first place.
Def one of my fav builds, thank you for sharing your work.

Very well done - one of the more realistic builds I've seen. The muted colors instead of decals was a great choice. Decals are ok, but they are always too colorful and make models look toyish.

The original ILM model builders had the advantage of not being able to get anything wrong, they were absolute genius though 👍🏻😀

Hey, love your build, I just started mine yesterday and I'll be looking back over this video when it comes time to paint. A tip I would give concerning light leakage. Use kitchen foil. It stops light getting out and you can also use it to channel light out the holes it's meant to go. So you get a brighter engine etc.
thanks, yeah foil is a good idea. I rarely have the lights on, so it's not a big deal. I think the paint and weathering part is where you want to be really focused

lol yes if they came out with an ESB edition, i most definitely would consider doing it again. I'm working on the shuttle right now- will post a vid once its complete
I think you did a great job. You noticed things like shade differences between the decals and the real thing. It’s too bad you followed the advice of a modeler who was not as skilled or observant. With the correct solvents and technique, you can absolutely do the back panel with the decal. Most importantly is that decal has the proper white outlines around the panels, as a lot of Empire tech has. Simply painting and dry-brushing doesn’t include those details and ruins the design. Regardless, the overall look of your build is amazing. It looks really good!
Insane workmanship, I agree with the airbrush paint instead of decals. Your weathering looks perfect! I have built many a falcons in different scales and make via resin, plastic etc. What did you use for base colour?
the base color is valejo white grey. i just used it on the shuttle tydirium as well. i'll post a video in the next day or 2

Model chilli did the cockpit better, but your weathering is 10x better.
I avoided the decals on the cockpit. I saw two versions on YT and opted to paint the details.
it is a lot of work to build this but i have to admit that Bandai has done an excellent job to make it very easy for builder as well
you're right, aside from the tiny pieces you have to figure out how to cut loose without breaking, the process of putting it together goes really smoothly compared to other model brands.

Looks great! I’m starting this project and was wondering if you did anything special with the panel lines. The other builds I’ve seen that used Tamiya panel lines have been way too dark and made the model look comic bookish. Any tips appreciated!
I def remember on the Shuttle build, I only used grey panel liner because black was way too dark like you mentioned. It's hard to remember, but I'm guessing that I only used grey, dark brown, and the rusty orange/brown for most panel lines. And, when mixing colors, it seemed like dulling them down (faded looking colors) was the way to go to avoid it looking like a toy.

Question: Do you have any idea where you can the Bandai 1/72 PG by any chance? Not that its hard to find, but I am seeing some hit and miss on the internet. Either its sold out or it is overpriced. Is it going out of production by any chance? and if so why is that????
i got it through amazon since i had prime at the time. it was about $400 early 2018
It seems to be very much available. But they don't continually produce these, they're long out of production. Also though, there are two versions, PG Perfect and PG Standard. Standard is much cheaper.

Congratulations. Great job. What is the base color? Which paints did you use?
thx, i used white grey for the base- once you start weathering it, white grey looks 100% accurate. I used a whole bottle of white grey. 1 bottle should do the trick. I mixed colors for the panel colors and did every color in one sitting. Planned maybe an hour for each panel color. I almost put a drop of grey in to give a few panels a slight shade difference and i did a very light white grey shading over most of the panels in one direction which made it look much more realistic. The tricky one was the tan- I don't advise following the decal color.

I saw a builder use the sticker paper to mask panels with. They trashed the sticker and cut around the shape and it was like pre-made stencils..
I’m waiting on mine until I build some skills..
i used frisket film to do that on my b-wing since it didn't come with a decal or sticker for the red circles. Another method I tried on the snowspeeder was wadding up tape and dabbing fresh paint to get a scratched/weathered look.
What are some of your advice in cutting those thinly fine line delicate wires for the Bandai 1/72 PG Millennium Falcons? Your methodology? thx, but no- i don't do legos i like models because i get to paint them. I used to paint all the time but now it's all digital, so i like to do something traditional
@@OkayOkcomics I love miniatures as well especially models, if and when I become a film director I will make sure to use models as much as I can
What is the pros and cons of putting those decals on there as oppose to painting them?
if you go with decals, it's probably easier but also more limiting (can't weather them like you would paint) and in the end i think paint looks better. With the paint, you need a lot of masking tape and a sense of how to mix paint (i don't think the decal panel colors were accurate so i used the booklet as reference). I feel like both probably take them same amount of time unless you're like me and you do a 2nd thin layer of white grey to age / fade, shade the panels. I think the best choice depends on your confidence with using the airbrush. Anytime i have a choice between decals and paint, I'm probably going to choose paint unless it's little detail decals. it's mostly an ease issue, but if you're doing a perfect grade falcon, you probably enjoy a challenge if it pays off.
How did you manage to put the decals on there? If any and did you paint them instead?
i have 2 panel decals on there- 1 grey and 1 red to see what they looked like. They don't look too bad but i prefer the airbrushed look. Airbrushing allowed me to have more control of the color. All the tiny decals are on there though.
