the best version of "fly through the rings" but with the glider - think about that
World of Warcraft honestly introduced a really good version of this in Dragonflight (most recent expansion). It has really good physics, multiple difficulties, bronze, silver, and gold times to beat, multiplayer races, etc.

Rogers game sounds incredible. It’s just MGS 5 with the Just Cause wing suit and grapple but set in a snow covered New York City. Also you can go into the sewer and play poker or whatever. Best game ever.

Andy's game just makes sense. He threw all the best fantasy rpg games together so it was easy to see how they work in tandem with each other.
NieR Automata is absolutely an open world. The environment is interconnected and you are only restrained to specific areas during exclusive sequences.
I am shaking my head at Andy, arguing that it's not a real open world because of the smaller zones linked by linear paths, but then turning around and putting Baldurs Gate 3 down for side quests.

Ocarina of Time is most definitely open world. I've always considered it my first open world experience. After the intro section, you can go pretty much anywhere you want. You can tackle the dungeons in almost any order. You meet npcs around the world that give you side quests. I really don't know why it wouldn't be an open world. The black screen entering areas is just the technological limitations of the time.

My perfect game would have the combat and stealth gameplay of The Last of Us 2, the open world of Red Dead Redemption 2, the RPG elements of Fallout: New Vegas, the freedom and exploration of Tears of The Kingdom and the survival mechanics of DayZ.
You guys did not just argue that Nier is not an open world.

Id really like to see this format return for future Gamecasts, maybe even do this same one again since Andy was the only one who actually attempted to make a cohesive game.
Meanwhile Bless gets tilted that people didnt vote for web slinging in the wild west with Sekiro combat. Those three things individually are the definitive parts of some of the best video games ever made, but they just dont make sense together.
Really fun episode though, really want to see more like it.

I would’ve put the business sim from Yakuza 7 or the cabaret club management sim from Yakuza 0 as my mini game, I spent so much time in those. Dondoko island in infinite wealth is good too

Def a hard thing to quantify, open world, for sure. Is A Link To The Past open world? Hollow Knight? I think they're both more open than BG3, but have a restricted movement along an axis

Alright people hear me out. Using Andy’s template, personally I’d throw in main story of Mercernaries 2 purely because you’re hunting down an entire tree of villains that makes an interesting story, switch dragons dogma 2 into the combat section, and secret sauce (correct me if it’s open zone) but if you could put in nemesis mechanic from shadows of Mordor I think that can make for a killer medieval fantasy.
I still think his game setup is an actual game. I don’t know if it would fit anywhere but I’d love to put prototype’s traversal into one of those games cause I do love that kind of traversal but it might be a more nerfed spider man.
Im playing through Lies of P now and Andy is correct. That combat feels so good.

Oh man, inFamous 2 traversal would have been perfect for Andy's game.
When I think of an open world game, I think of a game like skyrim where most of the map is already open.
EDIT: Basically where you can go almost anywhere you want from the start of the game.
While this was a lot of fun, and I'm only partly through, I think it would have majorly benefitted from some changes.
IF you're going to say each game can only be picked once then you have to allow people to pick whichever category they want instead of going down the list. You guaranteed something like Elden Ring goes for map/location because it's going to be off the board by the time a category someone else might want it for is just later on by luck of the draw. It hinders the spirit of the idea massively.
Also it feels like we keep going back and forth between "pick a game to inspire this category" and "pick a game for this category." In the same first category, Roger goes back on spiderman because he wants interiors but to me, a world inspired by Spider-Man and new York can still 100% have interiors. Andy says specifically he wants the lands between, but inspiring a world with house gives room for better interpretation.
That's just me, but those did stand out
Would've loved to see less restrictions put on this concept and then do it in a more co-operative manner, but if people disagree they can make slightly different versions like if Andy and Blessing couldn't agree on Bloodborne vs. Sekiro combat they could have 9/10 the same choices, but then that one category was allowed to be different.

Id argue thats more of a sandbox than open world
The three tvs infront of the hosts could be used to track these selections, would make it much easier to follow along! Even with the breakdown at the end of the episode it is very hard to keep track of things to envision these games.

Death Stranding story is the worst and proof that Kojima needs an editor. Incredible sci-fi concepts and interesting world. Loved the non-combat gameplay loop. Awwwwful pacing, dialog, and exposition. Straight trash. Wild choice, Roger.
