Absolute killer group of people to get together to talk about this game!
Barrett’s personal character story I think exemplifies what makes Elden Ring so special for so many people. You come into Limgrave as a complete stranger, almost a nobody, and it is a hostile world that you set out in full of characters and places and experiences for you to interact with. You can align yourself with these outer gods if you want to, you can interact with whoever you want and see their stories unfold or ignore them completely, it is a living breathing world that will move on without you if you let it.
It’s a 10/10 with issues for sure, but it is one of the greatest games ever made. Great episode y’all, so stoked for the DLC!

One thing I want from KindaFunny:
Focus on the things you love. I've seen you doing reviews with nobody in the panel having finished the game and the review was a huge waste of the viewer's time. But when you talk about stuff you like, such as Elden Ring, well, this content is what I'm here for.
Also, try to compartmenatalize the people who are good at specific stuff. For example, Andy and Greg are great at reviews. Paris is great at in-depth analyses. Blessing is a good all-rounder. Snowbike Mike is great for bringing a positive energy to everything. So on and so forth. Use your assets accordingly.

A Parry does not need to result in an attack from the one who parries. It is simply to block an incoming attack. So if it stops an attack but the attacker continues to swing, or you parry and the person falls down, same thing. Still a parry.

I've never been this excited for an Expansion in my 30 years of gaming.
It reminds me of some of my favourite expansions like Diablo 2's Lord Of Destruction and Witcher 3's Blood and Wine.
Also, FromSoft can do whatever the fuck they want at this point. The have such a strong sense of design for many schools of action based games.
Just to think of the fact that Elden Ring was their first proper open world is insane.

Fun fact: The idea of Cyclops came from idiot humans finding the skeletons of ancient Wooly Mammoths that looked like giant one eyed monsters. Likewise, the images of griffins were created from the discovery of Triceratops skeletons, which appeared to have the heads of a bird and the bodies of a beast. Dragons, obviously, were also the imagined perceptions of the bones (and probably preserved corpses) of other dinosaurs that were found over the early centuries of human civilization. This practice continued well into the 18th century before 'proper' scientific classifications of these skeletons were made, instead of just a handful of uneducated randos looking at the things trying to imagine what they were. I mean, people STILL try to pull the same shit in modern times, and a lot of the prevalent sideshow acts of the 20th century still contained mismatched body parts of different animals cobbled together to create something unique and unusual. Even those most recent 'alien bodies' being paraded around the world as 'evidence' or said to be similarly constructed fabrications. People still buy into that shit in the year 2024, so just imagine how somebody finding a T-Rex skeleton in the year 25 must have felt.

I’m guessing that Mesmer is Marika’s son. The trademark red hair is a dead giveaway. Marika used him to purge the people suffering from omen, and also used it as a chance to exile Mesmer. Mesmer’s flame was would be considered an affront to the golden order since it seems to resemble the old energy from the Crucible which preceded the Golden Order. The best analogy to something recent would be like with Odin and Hela from the MCU. Once the conquering was done she was exiled and wiped from history. In the first trailer for shadow, we hear Mesmer reference “mother”. There are three potential people who could be responsible for demigod. Marika, Rennala, and Gloam-Eyed Queen. Rennala wouldn’t make sense, but the other two are much higher in probability

Metal. Can't wait for the dlc. Hope I can join Messmer in further destruction. Also, speculating where Marika is in the trailer, that fleshy place, is the rootbed of what will grow into the Erdtree. I think these trees are built on oceans of blood and flesh of the fallen. Miquella's Haligtree was being watered with his own blood, so stands to reason.

The rumor (with substantial evidence) is that From Soft is working with Brandan Sanderson (The Way of Kings, Mistborn, and Wheel of Time author) to craft a very magic heavy game more akin to bloodborne but with a more blue and gold motif rather than red and black. There’s some concept art out there and quotes from Sanderson talking about the collaboration. I’m very interested to see if that comes to be true.

If he gives a chance and live stream it, I'm confident you guys will get the most views possible. I am still of the minority that Elden Ring does not have a good story, it has good lore. I felt the same playing that game as I did when I finished the Destiny 1 Vanilla Campaign, and I can sum it up in one sentence:
"I don't know what the fuck just happened but I did the thing, go me."
Elden Ring's story is not given to you in a great way imo. Most of the amazing storytelling is stuff that people pull from obscure lore on item descriptions (sound familiar?). I'm still floored that people feel like Elden Ring deserved the Best Story win or even a nomination in 2022.
If I feel compelled to go watch 10s of hours of lore videos to understand the 120 hour journey I just went on, then I did not have a good story experience.
I would still give the game a 10/10, because I feel like the game's highs are so incredibly high that it doesn't matter, but it is the singular knock that I have against that game.

I think I would give Elden Ring a 9/10. I have issues with some of the boss designs in that it feels like to me that FromSoft is in a War of Escalation with their player base in terms of difficulty. Dark Souls is one of my favorite games of all time, and when I die in Dark Souls, I honestly feel like its pretty fair 90%+ of the time. In Elden Ring, there are times against certain enemies and bosses where it falls well below that 90% mark for me. I can bring up tons and tons of individual examples, but the one I will bring up is the consistent hesitations that enemies have on attacks. The animation starts, I react by rolling, and then I find myself rolling 1 or 2 more times, and then the enemy FINALLY finishes a completely unnatural and exaggerated attack animation and hits me with the attack anyway. I'd MUCH rather just have it so that my roll has less i-frames, or the boss attacks have more active frames.

    • @thegeekdeveloper
      @thegeekdeveloper 3 місяці тому

But that in my opinion is part of the fun until you learn the move sets of each boss. The hesitation is the "gotcha bitch" moment of a boss with exaggerated hesi. I get mad at it as well, but I like it.

It's wild that Tamoor gave Elden Ring a 10, while giving FF& Rebirth an 8. Similar story telling as SoulsBorne games, as in there's alot under the skin, but he was so confused by Rebirth's ending & didn't bother to do lore research like Soulslikes. I just think it's ironic is all, and I'm saying this as a SoulsBorne lover.

I think what turns me off to From's games the most--more than the despondent tone--is the feeling that these stories are not human-scaled. Everything feels so big and extra that I have no reason to care about any of it. The "environmental storytelling" reminds me of the opposite of the Louis Khan design quote: "form follows function." The environment seems like it was created in service of story rather than being a setting in which stories happen. What domain does the Elden Lord rule over? Who are their subjects, and what does a normal day look like in these worlds? What happens the day after the final boss battle?

Elden Ring is great but everyone who fauns over the game always leaves out the negatives when looking at it. Repeated bosses over and over and over, poor game balancing, awful performance at launch, poor pacing. All things the game has and it just gets a pass because its From software. I'm a huge From software fan and I like this game a lot but other great games get picked apart for things Elden Ring gets a pass on.
