  • Belt Stripes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be confusing when you first start, especially since every school seems to award and interpret them differently. In this video, we go through what belt stripes mean on BJJ belts and how they are most commonly awarded.

Just show up and put in the work and they will come. Best thing is to not worry about them.

Only real proof of getting better is actually showing up and getting better!

My school does bjj once a month(we switch back and forth from striking and grappling) when it grappling month i sometimes fall short on the attendance part (since I work a 2nd job in the afternoon mon and wed. Its kind of hard to get the repetitions i want in mma class ) while some adults have all the afternoon/evening free to attend the classes, the ones that attend classes more will have a better understanding and chances of seeing a technique not once but over and over throughout week and month, than someone who only shows up twice a week the. But I know the feeling too well. When I got my first stripe in bjj I couldn't hold back my tears. The bjj workshop was this past Saturday the people that attended classes every day ended up getting the 2nd stripe (I was kind of frustrated with myself too, I went with opened mind ready to learn and ended up short i didnt stick out). But at the end I feels like classes and repetition are key in learning something

Repetitions are definitely key! It’s tough when scheduling doesn’t work out sometimes and it makes you feel behind, I know that feeling, just seems to be a part of the seasons of life. Thanks for watching!

Never compare yourself to others in a judgemental way. It is the fastest way to become depressed and destroy the happiness that you could have.
If you are only going two times a week, I promise you will get good. I only averaged two times a week for two years and was promoted to blue belt (yesterday I was promoted to purple belt after five years of training and winning the Houston IBJJF Open, Medium-Heavy, Masters 1, Blue belt division).
Grappling has a STEEP learning curve. So it is going to take a lot of patience but it is extremely rewarding. Keep going my man! You can do this!

First school I was at ran you through a gauntlet and based the decision on that. The current school, as far as I can tell, operates under the first method just from observing you through the class.

I think that most schools do that method. Thank you for commenting and watching!

What if you choose not to participate in the gauntlet? My membership dues don’t cover getting whipped by my fellow students and not being able to fight back.

@@felixdewinter3484 I never said you weren't allowed to fight back. You're just rolling with one person after another.

@@TonberryShuffle okay, we have different definitions of gauntlet. I was thinking of the one where the whole school whips you with their belts after you get promoted.

My school; At least for the first stripe on our white belts is based on coming to class consistently. After that I think it's both based on attendance and progression.

I ask my instructor and ge just told me I need to learn how to fight with my legs. No specifics, just one general answer.

Yeah that’s something that a lot of us struggle with at the beginning.
Took me a long time to put it into practice very well tbh
