    Complete newbie starting at my first gym soon at the age of 39. I’ve talked to a few guys at my powerlifting gym who do jujitsu and they all think I’ll have problems finding people to roll with. I have 10 years of wrestling background and 25+ in the strongman / powerlifting world. At 6’3 280 they don’t think I’ll find a lot local guys willing to roll with me. But I’m going in knowing outside of my wrestling background l don’t know shit and I’d love to go slow and learn with someone who isn’t going to immediately try and dislocate my elbow as someone who still love powerlifting and works in construction while also having a 2 year old I want to eventually do jujitsu with me the injury anxiety is there

    Been training for about a month and remembering to take it easy and not “hard” is something that tends to slip a few times during sessions . The last recent session was the first time I had to different rolling partners tell me to take it “friendly “ and slow to let the movements register. Coming from a wrestling background this is something I need to have seeded into my thought process I’m in my late 30s and the majority are blue and purple belt partners I just remember that we all need to go back home in one peace

    • @jiujitsujunction

      Wrestling (especially at the age you learn wrestling) is all fast, intense and simpler. The biggest difference is that learning movement patterns that are really unfamiliar especially when you're older is that its more efficient to learn it all a bit more slowed down. Which kind of takes care of the going too hard thing all on it's own. Thanks for sharing your experience!

    This is helpful, but I am still not sure what I’m supposed to do. I’m 225 lbs, 6’1” and a meathead. I’m still new. I try to be nice to everyone. But it is difficult to balance what your saying. The main thing is play guard. I’m not sure if that means I should be letting someone win rather than use my strength. Coach will point me out to class or use me as an example of why certain techniques have to be done using your strongest muscles against my weakest. Coach has also encouraged women and teens to feel comfortable rolling with me and he’s said things like - he is the nicest, big and scary man I’ve met, he’s not going to hurt you if you roll with him. I do try my best to match the other person’s effort, but at some point if their skill is higher than mine, I do use my strength and weight. Especially If someone is coming in hard. If they want to win at all costs and I can stop them, my instinct is that I should. But sometimes I will let the person win out of fear that they won’t want k roll with me if they can’t tap me. A guy did get really frustrated that he wasn’t able to tap me in the 5 minutes we rolled. I’ve been going regularly enough that it seems every small guy with a higher belt wants to roll with me lately. Which is cool. They haven’t tried to kill me. But I can tell they want to win. Should I be letting them tap me?

    • @jiujitsujunction
      @jiujitsujunction 17 днів тому

      Big guys tend to "need to play guard" to keep things interesting and a bit safer especially when it comes to rolling with other new grapplers. Playing guard and using solid fundamental movements that don't rely on strength is always a good bet but you don't ever have to "let them win" by breaking out of the good fundamental movement patterns. I'd make them have to beat your movements with their movements. Coach using you that way is a great compliment and it shows faith that you're a great training partner in my opinion. Yeah matching effort in speed and movement and not letting yourself get tapped while being conscientious with your partner is the best you can do and it sounds like you do a good job of it. It's not really your responsibility to manage their emotions. That said if they won't overexcitedly rip submissions you can practice "late submission escapes" and they'll catch you a bit more and you'll both get something out of it. Yeah smaller guys really like conscientious big guys. You don't have to let them tap you though (but maybe ride the line and doing some late escapes wouldn't be a bad idea for you) Appreciate you sharing your experience with us!

    Great tips! My gym spends two weeks on the same moves and it’s the first time I’ve felt like this is something I enjoy and could learn. One year white belt- I will learn a technique and hit it amazingly that first week, then for some reason boom not again for months and I’m trying the whole time lol. The weird thing is bolos, let me say i, before learning or really knowing what a bolo was had been hitting it in a couple cases naturally when apparently (in retrospect now) was at the right spot at the right time. However since learning it a month ago (from various locations) I’m spamming it every session and I am successful 50% of the time consistently, I’m getting to the back 80% of the time. So I’m successfully doing the bolo but not fully taking the back part (known problem I’m working) I do think my body was made for bolos the rolls the hip mobility for that move. I enjoy it a lot. Now time to work on back control more.

    Its funny since Belt Stripes havent been a thing from white to brown when BJJ was "new".... Only Black belt had stripes.... Stripes were invented because usually it took 2,5 years from white to blue and another 4-5 years from blue to purple.... So some people had trained for 5-6 years and had only got 1 belt promotion which made some people sad. Stripes dont mean anything ! Its a new invention to give "fake" Promotions to people who need constant confirmation of Progress... not giving a f ... about stripes is not watering down BJJ... BJJ had no stripes before it was waterd down ;) Giving stripes on attendence is pefectly legit since it has no real meaning besides making some people happy ;) I got my 3rd Stripe today because i did well vs Blue Belts and submitted several of them... i earned them within 11 weeks but i was an MMA fighter many many years back. In our School stripes can be given for doing good but will also automatically come for attendence . So you could earn 3 Stripes on White for attending class regularly for 1 year or like me just do well and get them within a little less than 3 months. Doesnt matter ;)... Also another active semi-pro MMA fighter came to our gym and got 3 Stripes after the first rolling session since he could hang with some purple belts.

    I commented about 7 months ago when I first started doing jujitsu under a Gracie University certified training center.. After about a year of doing the combatatives. Which include 36 different techniques and drills. I just got promoted. And moved on to the most advanced class the master cycle class. Which has your full-on sparring. After seeing a lot of comments from people who just started jujitsu.white belts Starting out and having to go to schools. That start sparring right from the first class. I realized the advantage that I had going into sparring for my first time after having gone through the first gracie university classes and learning the 36 techniques. I was well more aware, even though I had never sparred. I had an understanding of positions. Certain things for like an elevator sweep or elbow escape from mount. Or understanding side control and half guard and things like that. I was a lot more comfortable than it seems like a lot of other white Belts when they first started full sparring. Considering im in my 40s its been such a great experience

      That’s great that you’ve had a positive experience there. I can see pros and cons to each approach but generally speaking I always found that good bjj schools can handle sparring in the first few classes with grace. That said I’d rather take the Gracie approach than get thrown to the wolves in the wrong school (been to places like that too) Thanks for sharing your experience with us

    I'm a fresh blue belt, like 2 months and I'm at that point where I just stop everybody and rarely submit people. I sweep and control but I have trouble submitting people and I think I still go too soft regardless of how hard my training partner goes. It's a little annoying.

    • @jiujitsujunction
      @jiujitsujunction 3 місяці тому

      Submitting people is the hardest part so imo that’s just how it goes for quite a while unless there’s a big skill gap Can definitely identify with that feeling though haha It gets better

    Well this sucks lol I know about the healing process but I’m trying to get my suit done and I wouldn’t want to roll with a fresh big tattoo

      Yeah big tattoos are even harder to manage than a little one. I’d err on the side of not messing up expensive tattoos too

    Exactly what I need! My defense and cardio is so much better, but my memory sucks! I still freeze up, and forget all the awesome moves I've learned.

    • @jiujitsujunction
      @jiujitsujunction 3 місяці тому

      Man I’ve been there too haha Gets better especially if you’re very deliberate about training the muscle movement patterns

    32 year old white belt. I have a bit of wrestling experience so going slow is something I’m learning. It’s hard for me (in the moment) to not use speed and strength to move into or out of positions. I’m working on it though. Also I must say I have so much respect for my fellow white belts who started with no grappling experience. It was crazy enough for me with grappling experience I couldn’t imagine being completely green.

      In some small ways it’s easier to learn (this is Andre replying) when you show up with an “empty cup.” But damn once wrestlers empty it a bit and fill it again get they’re a force of nature haha

    What mouthguards do you recommend for jiu jitsu? Ive read lots of people recommending the Sisu Max. What are your thoughts on it?

    • @jiujitsujunction
      @jiujitsujunction 3 місяці тому

      People love to go fancy on mouth guards but I find that the cheap moldable clear ones work just fine for me personally. 10-12 bucks for 2 boil and bites. Most of the guys in my mma gym use shock doctor though

    I go into class excited about hopefully getting better and being awesome and I always leave feeling violated and defeated but uplifted by classmates and encouraged and the other day I got attacked on my job because I work in a psych hospital. I realized real quick that had actually been learning quite a lot and had the old lady subdued pretty quickly lol kidding it was a 6’3 man.

    • @jiujitsujunction
      @jiujitsujunction 3 місяці тому

      Haha yeah it’s a real humbling moment when the old lady submits you (been there) That first sentence was a friggin roller coaster to read. All the emotion transitioning into getting attacked geez Glad you’re okay and enjoying the experience

    I’m a 2 stripe white belt been training consistently for a year today it hit me while I was rolling that I was doin some movements without having to think about then it was a cool moment for me cuz usually I jjst feel lost or have to really think about stuff

    I think it's pretty normal in the first stage to use strength and go all out when you don't know any techniques. It's all you have to rely on. My only problem is those that are spazzy.

    • @jiujitsujunction
      @jiujitsujunction 3 місяці тому

    First month into Jits at 47 years old and have been looking for a podcast like this since I started....it is so difficult to find expert yet calm and humble advice online...without all the bs. As a white belt, my main aim at the moment has been to stay relaxed and be a good rolling partner, someone that people want to roll with...I see growth for me personally, more from doing rather than watching. You guys are great and have just subscribed, looking forward to checking out your other content 👍👍

    My school; At least for the first stripe on our white belts is based on coming to class consistently. After that I think it's both based on attendance and progression.

    There’s exceptions to the rule but in my experience guys that come in with that “1st stage” mentality don’t keep training for a long time.
