I just received my brown belt two days ago. Have been doing BJJ for a about 25 years but spent a large portion of that training with friends without grading. When i started grading, everything accelerated and my enjoyment grew exponentially. I looked at this video and other brown belt "expectation" videos so many times in the last couple of weeks. They were quite enlightening and i'm grateful to those who put them together.
I agree 100%, I just received my brown belt earlier this year, I was not expecting it at all and thought I didn't deserve it, but after listening to you I realized I DO fit the criteria you described. Mahalo, I have a new look and drive to keep improving in all areas.
Really enjoying your content! Very insightful and practical, too often people chase techniques and ways to beat people without looking at the bigger picture.
Thank you means a lot, and it’s crazy like ever since I earned my brown belt people laid off of me. I’ve been leading more. Plus blue belts don’t want to roll as much anymore
Advice? Simple! Get back in there, keep your head low and your eyes and ears up! Keep learning and keep putting in the hard work! Congratulations on the promotion!
JCBPARISPARIS I just make a verbal agreement if I am rolling with purple belts and above at the start of the roll, “leg locks?” If he or she agrees then we flow and apply leg locks as necessary.
Ya, because leg locks make u lazy lol. That's just the truth, they're great, and effective and everything, but they sort of get u too comfortable. With that said, it's best to be a beast everywhere else, and work on leg locks last once u have the full fundamentals and other submissions down. 🤣
Good video, thanks for sharing. Too many schools around here now days add belts just for money, don't give instruction just tid bits trying to drag out 10 to 15 years worth of payments just to get to purple possibly blue, shameful
Whatcha mean I have no game?? As a white belt, I do have a go-to technique and a go-to pass and stuff! I do the only one that I know well enough to apply in real rolling in that situation !! I even have, for some situations, a contingency, like, if X doesn't work, it opens up to Y :) ... and I pray that the other guy won't be proficient enough to counter my meh execution/transitions.
Watching this segment 3 years on (Monday, October 18th 2021) Only THREE WEEKS into my white belt journey, from watching other BJJ content (The Art of Skill) getting to brown belt won’t happen for another 9/10 years and black belt? If I’m determined and eager to take my BJJ that far, won’t be for another 14/16 years… Many thanks for this episode, sir 🙏🏿
When I do become a black belt, ima set the tone for myself and my kids, when they ask me what it takes to be a black belt, my answer is gonna be "You have to enjoy it". I'm not about that spiritual, traditional and punctual life style. Alot of professors will say that being a black belt is about technique. I say that's only one side of it. The other side of it is how good u are, I meet alot of purples and browns that are like fighting Blue Belts still, because they're no good, but I do believe that if u know how to do alot of techniques, then why not. To explain my point a bit better, there're two sides to a coin, no matter what side u land on, ur still the same coin. The other thing I wanna express bluntly is the Red Belt. Realistically, the belt is an accomplishment, it doesn't do anything. The Red Belt is basically the retirement belt. It says "Your journey is over, not because there's nothing left for u to learn, but because you've reached the end of your life span to learn anything left." And every stripe on that Red Belt is just another symbol of u pushing urself until ur time comes. These are my opinions, and if anyone were to ask me "Who are you to say these things", I'm a human, a down to Earth one at that, who has an opinion. U can either absorb what I said, or leave it be. But I just don't see the same as other martial artists do. Also who u are shouldn't reflect on ur martial arts skills or ranking. U could be a shitty person, mean, always late, doesn't care about anything, like Abraham Marte and still be a champ, that's proof in the pudding. (By the way if anyone asks how Abraham is a shit person, he's an asshole, and cherry on top is that the guy hosts animal fights, and for me that's enough to be considered a shitty person). Anyways, that's just me, the black belt is urs to gain, and ur doing this for urself, always keep that in mind.
the coral belt is the "retirement" belt. retirement from fighting, that is. the red belt just may be the retirement from teaching belt, as well. not sure myself.
@@KamaJiuJitsu The Coral Belt is an odd one to me. Can't say I'm a fan of it or of how it looks. But the belt system used to be just white and black in Judo. The colors started coming out for the children. I have no idea how the red belt came to be, but ya, I mean to be a master of the art, I think is to be a champion, Cyborg, Bruno Malfacine, Keenan, Jacare, all those guys are Masters at this martial art. With that said, a Red Belt and Coral Belt doesn't mean grandmaster, just means, "his-story".
a top competitor doesn't necessarily mean they've "mastered" the art. the BJJ coral belt makes more sense to me than the red/white belt. after all, if a person goes from black to red, wouldn't the red/black belt represent a natural transition from black to red? as far as "titles" go. black belt "teacher" is Professor. to earn a coral, need to have been a black belt "professor" (not all black belts earn title "Professor/Teacher"). Coral title is "Master." red belt title is "Grand Master."
@@KamaJiuJitsu Not in my opinion. I just don't agree, like a doctor, they're usually at their best when they were younger, at the youngest age, clearly they're not masters, but somewhere in the middle they become masters, slowly declining at age, and then coral belt is sort of like the slowing down sign. Red belt to me is a last will. But like I said that's just my personal opinion. I can't really go back on it, u may learn more once ur a coral belt, but then it's only one side of the coin. Normally champions already know what works for them and I think they know how to do what works. So I consider them masters at the art, realistically, most of them are the definition of ridiculousness in skill level and knowledge.
Hi Professor, When would you say that you are completely street ready? Meaning, from what belt is a person, who's a Kama Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, more than capable of defending themselves on any fight with pretty much anybody? Your opponent being any size, any height, any age, and etc?
Man............I cannot imagine being told that I was not a good person and that is the reason I will not be promoted to Black Belt! I can easily understand being a bit young minded at 20 or so...........but to be told I have character flaws...........bad!
In some way, it is kind of sad that if you are you, and not a copy of what the instructor wants as a character, you will never pass. This should be addressed in my opinion when they become blue belts. Then they can still be molded and work on it themselves, instead of being denied a promotion for non martial arts reasons.
@@KamaJiuJitsu Indeed a rare problem, for the reason you mentioned. Brown belts are rare, it is the last colored belt earned and with this amount of dedication, they will eventual technique wise become black belts. It is in this world possible that someone gets a new job or has a different reason to move. When people like these make it to a for them new gym, they ain't noobs, but indeed you need to get to know them. It is a more elegant dance between the "new brown belt" and his "new club instructor". For him this is great, because this new gym will address the basics a wee bit different and improve him, maybe he brings something with him that helps you guys. You indeed need to get to know him like he needs to get to know you guys and the ritme of your gym. If you had this guy since he was white/blue, it would just be a question about refinement of techniek and personal improvement, this can indeed not be known if you just walk in at brown. Maybe it should get formalized what the "personal characteristics" are that should be made your own as part of the curriculum. We had 2 simple rules concerning this in our Judo gyms, and they were teacheth to new students early on. Do no harm to others unless in self defense and bring no shame to our martial arts and or school. Hold our name with some respect, will ya? There are certain crimes out there in the real world we do not condone next to what the police/judge decide. If you commit these atrocities, you are cut from the school/affiliation. We had a wide range of students male/female, all kinds of skin color and even different believes. All of that stayed out, waiting with your ego at the door. One of the things I love about Judo and BJJ, clearly from the same branch of martial arts. They keep me and every bodies ego in check, so I focus on Judo(for me then) and keeping my training partners safe. I'm at the current looking for a BJJ school somewhat in my vicinity for these reasons. I feel like I can learn a lot there, even at my 46, both in techniek and as a person. Sorry for the lots of text, with respect, Hendrik (from Belgium, did Judo between 4.5 years old to my 17).
Yes and No all people that have experienced oppression that move because of limited intellectual development, linguistic discrimination, misdiagnose, negitive counseling, unfairness and cybernetic filters/screens, genetic discrimination, premature family deaths and unnecessary jargon pressuring movements for liberation force a lack in Jiu-Jitsu promotion. Also a disconnect between students and sensei some times if you raised a bar some might have authority over you will simply use overt discrimination because they have fitness problems and issues... And some work for the USA gov.
Thank you sir, I wish my sense explained it to me like you do. Unfortunately my first school was a McDojo 30 yrs ago.20 yrs ago I was fortunate to meet to teacher who talks very similar to you. Where I live there are no schools, but there is the internet. Respect.
A school in these parts would sell out quick I think, but no one wants a teacher who looks like a potato lol. If you could expand out here you may succeed here.

Are you still training?
There may not be a lot of us, but we appreciate you making a video for us! Thank you.
Brown belt has to be (in my opinion) one of the coolest belt colours
I think purple is cooler imo
It's all relative. From white to blue, I used to think purple was the coolest, until I became one. Now I'm dreaming of that brown belt.

Sure they do. It just isn’t good enough to command respect. It’s not dangerous.
Dont worry about the belt, just love what ur doing and have fun and work hard and the belt will be there
exactly right. i couldn't have said it better myself!
god it's been such a long time since I've heard an oldschool blackboard being used. Thanks for the nostalgia :)
Is it weird that I like it?
A blackboard is a whiteboard that never gave up. 😁
These videos are actually helpful. Started listening when I moved to a new school at purple. Really helps to put everything in context

the part with the moving is very very true
Love the cow picture to the side of the blackboard.

Just picked up my brown belt! ❤ Spot on, 40+
Great video thank you for posting it.
My pleasure.
Best explanation i have seen great videos!
I didn't think I'd be watching a BJJ video to the end that was entirely just a guy on a chaulkboard. Excellent stuff and very insightful!
Thank you. I’m glad I got JUST ONE PERSON to watch me blab!
Very well said professor. Excellent video.
I’m a brown belt and I agree with almost everything you said...I like to think I had some game as a blue belt! Lol
Really enjoying your content! Very insightful and practical, too often people chase techniques and ways to beat people without looking at the bigger picture.
Great 👍🏼 analysis - old 3 stripe purple - found this useful…
I was just promoted to Brown Belt in May. This is a huge help. Thank you Professor Ryan!
Are you still training? Awarded Black Belt yet?
Excellent advice! Thanks for breaking it down.
Thank you, great video now I understand very well what I need.
I just got my BROWN belt Thursday, I’m kinda intimidated I’m the youngest BROWN at my school 22 years old, any advice.
Congratulations!

Purple belt : basics + dangerous. Exact eg in many bjj gyms leg locks can't be used before the purple one.
Purple belts should be dangerous with or without leg locks.
Kama Jiu-Jitsu yes, of course !

Where do you usually operate? If I ever travel to the states on my own, I would love to meet you and train with you!
We have three locations - Laguna Hills - CA, Flower Mound - TX, and Austin - TX. Feel free to come visit us anytime!
@@KamaJiuJitsu I live in Canada, and I have a lot of problems to deal with right now. It will take some time before I can visit.

How long have you been a black belt sir
Thank you Sir
