I grew up with this movie and watched it countless times, Im so glad you liked it without knowing Leiji's universe
The skull imagery reminds me of the crossbone vanguard from Gundam. It reminds me of the original Gundam concept, in fact imagine if someone made a anime with elements of mobile suit variations and captain harlock.

I remember him! He’s from Galaxy Express 999! It was an anime I was interested in when I was a kid. Back when I was interested in trains instead of Godzilla.
Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, and Queen Millennia are anime series that take place in the same universe. I watched the original series when it would come on channel 47. The Spanish station would sign off on the weekends at 7:00pm or 8:00 and then the Japanese station would start . Captain Harlock was aired uncut and no subtitles one episode every Saturday until it ended. On Sunday evenings Galaxy Express 999 was aired uncut . This was back in the late 70's or during the early 80's. There where other animated shows that aired like Cyborg 009. Queen Millennia started airing but never finished.

Inoue-San would later return as Harlock in Super Robot Taisen T as his final role before his passing months later. He also admitted that while making several battle scripts for the game, Harlock was just sound like OG Harlock despite his age.
I think it was because back then , most MCs were grown men and no teenagers like today or atleast that is how i remember , so most voice actors could use their own voices or close enough that they could easily maintain the same tones
